In 2014, Dominic Holliman-Wade returned to his hometown of Columbus to expand his career opportunities. He received a job readiness postcard from Nationwide Children’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families (HNHF), advertising a job assistance and resumé workshop. Dominic recalls the experience as a unique one. The workshop gave the surrounding community direct access to Nationwide Children’s human resources professionals eager to offer their expertise one-on-one.

“The engagement was great because they were genuinely invested in the community and in seeing community participants leave with something valuable,” Dominic says.

Dominic received several job opportunities within four weeks of attending the workshop. His first role, as constant attendant in the Big Lots Behavioral Health Services at Nationwide Children’s Hospital was the beginning of his journey at Nationwide Children’s, where he sought more opportunities to affect change within his community and in the lives of others. In 2020, while in graduate school and working as population outreach coordinator through Partners For Kids, Dominic received a scholarship to participate in the Disparities Leadership Program (DLP). DLP is a yearlong, hands-on education program focused on helping health care leaders achieve equity in healthcare. The coronavirus pandemic intensified language access issues in health care – Domonic’s research identified solutions to prevent risk of COVID-19 transmission in underrepresented minority populations.

In January 2022, Dominic’s career aspirations rose to newer heights. As a planning consultant within the Department of Planning and Business Development, he leads and coordinates construction projects from beginning to end, utilizing strategic planning skills he learned years prior. Every role has been a step up to serve the community. The constant attendant role gave him access into the professional world of healthcare, patient care allowed him to understand the interworking of his administrative duties, and now Dominic’s current role enables him to see how non-clinical roles help patients and families receive the best care possible.

The postcard from HNHF is how Dominic’s journey began. His initiative and drive continue to take him further. He has been given a space to thrive in, to learn who he is, take on new careers, and discover unique ways to impact patients and their families.

“Nationwide Children’s has given me a platform to continue learning and growing. Every role I’ve held not only fit my career goals but also my values… I can see myself here for years to come.”

“Nothing can beat the feeling of satisfaction when you know your work brings about positive change.”
