BARNES & NOBLE STORYTIME

Article by: Brian Tran

Barnes & Noble is one of North Crowley Key Club’s daily events. It occurs every Saturday from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. at our local Barnes & Noble on Hulen. In this event, volunteers would read books and participate in crafts with children. It is a great event that we have because we get to read to little kids who would otherwise miss out on an opportunity like that. On this Saturday, I was the officer in charge, and much to my surprise, another officer, Tina, also showed up! In addition to Tina, we also had a member who came, so that made three of us. We usually have a theme every Saturday, and our theme that day was Christmas! After reading wonderful stories to the children, there were coloring sheets prepared as part of our crafts. It’s cute watching little kids participate and unleashed their creativity onto the crafts.

when my cousins were still infants, and it nostalgically brought me back to the amazing past. Therefore, I love events like this, where I can bond with children because I adore them. It’s wonderful how we have great outcomes for Barnes & Noble. It lets me know that there are children who still find values in stories and reading. I’m also greatly surprised that we constantly have participants despite it being so early in the morning. I love how little kids enjoy coming to Barnes & Noble just to come watch us read and participate in crafts after. It is a great opportunity as well to connect with the younger generation by reading and spending time with them.

One of the greatest opportunities of this event is interacting with the kids. For example, during the event, I quickly bonded with an adorable baby boy, and I could tell he liked me equally well. Even though his mom and him came in a little after the event ended, we still allowed them to do the craft. While his mom was doing the coloring sheets, he kept staring at me. I saw this as an opportunity to play with him, so I played some class peek-a-boos. Soon, we were doing it back and forth to one another. It was the cutest thing I experienced all day! After that, his mom put him on the ground for a bit, so I went down with him and started playing with him on the floor. It reminded me of the times

Article by: Sandy Nguyen I have many New Year’s resolutions, and some of them are about Key Club! One of the resolutions regarding Key Club is that I hope for better member participations. Unlike last year, our member participations have decline a bit, so I hope for 2017 to be the year our members participate more! It’s important to volunteer and help our community, after all. My other resolution is more active attendance of our officers. I know that sometimes, personal activities can prevent our officers from participating in events. However, I hope for us to be able to balance everything out and keep NCKC going strong! Besides these “blanket” resolutions, I also have personal ones regarding Key Club. For me, I’d love to win and have the best non-traditional scrapbook this year. For the last couple of years, NCKC has always been number one for the non-traditional scrapbook, and I’d like to not fall behind. Of course, the pressure is intense when you must keep up tradition! Furthermore, it would be amazing if we land number one in everything that we’d run for! Furthermore, it would be extremely wonderful to win tons of trophies this year similar to how we did last year. The key to these successes lies within teamwork. I know that it would be utterly im-

07

possible for me to accomplish these by myself. Therefore, I rely greatly on the officer board and NCKC as a whole to accomplish these goals. After all, teamwork makes the dream works! It’s critically important to bring these resolutions to fruition because what’s the point of New Year’s resolutions if you’re not going to try to achieve them? In 2016, we took some losses, but in 2017, things will be better! We’ll be more active, responsive to things, and we’re going to work our way to the top slowly but gradually. We’ll get to number one in district and win every contest we complete for. It’ll be all worth it in the end because of the great effort and hard work we poured into Key Club. This can lead us to the top at DCON, and DCON is where we make our New Year’s resolutions shine! Having these New Year’s resolutions for Key Club is amazing because they will keep our club focus on tasks and hopefully lead us to be number one in district when it comes to DCON!

Article by: Yerasly Duran On Thursday, December 15th, North Crowley Key Club held our annual Christmas party! This Christmas party was held after school in order for our freshmen members to be able to attend. Before we started the party, there was the general meeting. In this short meeting, we talked about our ongoing events, such as Storytime and Agape meal, and tons of other projects that we will be working on during the break, mostly DCON projects. Since finals were nearing and winter break was coming, this was our last meeting for the year. After the meeting was the official party! We were originally going to watch a movie, but our projector was not working. Oh no! However, that did not make our party any less fun! Instead, we played board games such as Cranium and had our white elephant! Furthermore, the party came with numerous food options such as nachos, pizza, donuts, kolaches, and drinks and candies of course!

09

After eating, we decided to split into two groups and play Cranium the board game. This game brought the party to a new level! It was similar to a trivia and dare game with a bit of charades added to it! It was not soon before the game began to get competitive. What was difficult about this game was there were many old songs, actors and actresses, and movies we did not know. Therefore, it was a bit of a challenge to act them out. However, it was incredibly hilarious seeing fellow Key Clubbers attempting to hum “Baby Got Back”, act out films such as The Hunger Games and Finding Dory, and seeing my friends acting out Naruto. The game paused at a tie for the longest time, and this was when the teams became incredibly competitive. However, after a lengthy competition, my team came out as the victor (only by a landslide, whew). Go us! Finally, we got to our white elephant gift exchange. Unfortunately, most people didn’t participate, but that was okay. It was still a joy to see other people exchange gifts and see their

reactions.

DCON 2016

Article by: Sandy Ngueyn

My favorite event is District Convention, a.k.a. DCON. DCON is where all the Key Clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma district gather to compete in numerous competitions, win trophies, and receive recognition for the hard work everybody has put into Key Club year-round! The convention was held in Dallas and located at the Sheraton hotel. I attended DCON for the first time last year and had such a blast! Before, Key Club was just another club to me. However, after experiencing DCON, my perspective about Key Club changed. It wasn’t just another club, it was this international club that brings everyone together. I greatly enjoyed my time at DCON; however, there was one thing I abhorred – waking up early. When you’re not a morning person, you’d understand how difficult it is to wake up at 7 A.M. and immediately start getting ready for the day. On the first day, there were tons of activities for everyone to participate in. There was this activity where they performed fake marriages, and it was where I got “married” to my boyfriend, Brian. Besides the fun activities, it was also the day we presented our service project. Other officers and I worked incredibly hard on the service project, so we hoped for a wonderful outcome… And we received second place!

within your own club. While we waited for the forums, my club played silly games such as Watermelon, Big Booty, Mow, Concentration, and Bunny Bunny. Before, DCON, I only knew handful of officers in my club. However, after it, I feel like I’ve got to know other new officers as well on a better level. One of the memorable moments for me was the laughter we shared at the poolside. There, we’d tell one of our officers, Vincent, to perform hilarious dance moves such as the Helicopter. He’d twirl around as he made his way to the pool and jumped in! All of us died of laughter. Another wonderful moment was the announcement for the winners, of course. But before that, we were served dinner and got to witness talented singers lifting us off our feet with their beautiful voices. Overall, DCON was an incredible experience that I plan to attend again this year. However, this is my last year to attend, which I’m a bit sad, but I hope it’ll be worth it and win as many (or more) things than last year!

DCON wasn’t just a place to meet new people, it was also a place to bond
