think we can all agree that it is so good to have 2020 officially in the rearview mirror. As we pass the one-year mark on the COVID-19 pandemic, there are signs that good things are on the horizon. Restaurants are back open for limited indoor dining, gyms are open, retail shops are bouncing back, and soon we will see some new businesses and services in Fortuna. We are all crossing our fingers that we will be able to celebrate the Rodeo’s 100th year in July, see classic cars cruising through Downtown during AutoXpo, have a beer or hard cider at Hops in Humboldt, and take a hay wagon ride through town during Apple Harvest Festival. Fortuna’s annual events are what make our community special and have been missed by many. Coming in March, the Chamber is launching a Fortuna Loyalty Card to help promote all community businesses. You can visit fortunachamber.com/ loyaltycard for more information on the program. Also in March we will be offering sexual harassment prevention training to all businesses. See our ad on page 18. On April 9, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the Chamber will be partnering with the Fortuna Skate Park Collective to host a Drive-Thru Dinner & Raffle Fundraiser at the River Lodge Conference Center (see page 14). Tickets will go on sale on March 5. The Chamber is also teaming up with the Fortuna High School District to bring back Operation Celebrate. We will announce more information in the coming weeks. If you own a business and want to feature some amazing graduating seniors in your window, let us know! We will be reaching out to our business community for hosts and sponsors once we finalize the dates of the contest. Don’t forget to check out our billboard survey on page 11. We are giving one lucky respondent a $100 gift certificate to their favorite Fortuna business as a thank you! Happy Spring, Fortuna! Stay healthy, continue supporting our local businesses, and keep looking ahead to brighter days. — Renee Lindsay, Fortuna Chamber President and CEO

Chamber Member Spotlight McKay’s Collision Repair

Patrick McKay, Jr., started McKay’s Collision Repair back in January of 2000 and has had the pleasure of celebrating 21 years of business in The Friendly City of Fortuna. Patrick has been in the Collision Repair industry for over 43 years. The facility is a multifaceted repair shop offering full collision repair and paint refinishing on all makes and models of cars and trucks. In addition, they offer suspension, mechanical, and aluminum frame repair. Patrick believes Fortuna is a wonderful city to own a business in. He had the good fortune to work for Ken Huffman, owner of Timberland Chevrolet. Ken, who passed away in 2016, was a man Patrick greatly admired. After Patrick was hired to run Timberland’s Body Shop, he approached Ken and expressed a desire to buy it if he ever wanted to sell. Within two years, Ken approached him and said he was ready to sell the business to him. “We literally sealed our deal on a handshake!” Patrick stated. Business has been good, despite Covid, thanks to a very strong customer base. Patrick and his staff are grateful for these clients. When asked for tips for small business owners, he said customers should be top priority. “Treat them as you would want to be treated. Be willing to put in long hours and weekends if needed. Your business is your baby and do all you have to do to help it thrive,” he said. He and his staff are continually updating their education and knowledge of collision repair standards. They do all they can from start to finish to make an unhappy situation less stressful for the customer. McKay’s Collision Repair is located at 181 S. Fortuna Blvd and can be reached at 725-6483.

Scrapper’s Edge

Fortuna native Sondra Kirtley is no stranger to the Fortuna Chamber having served on its Board when working at Western Auto in Fortuna. Sondra’s mom, Nancy, decided to retire and sell Western Auto so Sondra decided it was time to change careers and

open a different type of small business. Sondra was determined to open a paper craft store that offered services the typical store didn’t, such as color copies, computer rental stations, and shipping. When searching for a location to open such a business, she discovered that “The Copy Stop & More” in Eureka was for sale. She immediately recognized its potential and, in June 2004, purchased it, changed its name to “Scrapper’s Edge” and added paper craft supplies. Not long after opening, Scrapper’s Edge became known as the premier scrapbooking retailer in Northern California - providing the newest, most innovative products at discount prices. In addition, Sondra and her team added a high level of enthusiasm and professionalism that gained respect and appreciation with printing customers. Not surprisingly, Scrapper’s Edge quickly ran out of space. So, in June 2006, Scrapper’s Edge moved to a much larger location -- now offering 6500 square feet of “paper bliss!” In addition to scrapbooking supplies, Scrapper’s Edge sells a wide range of paper craft and art supplies, teaching materials, office supplies and stationery. Scrapper’s Edge is also known for its Business Services, including printing, mailing, shipping, graphic design, Notary Public, and Live Scan fingerprinting. The pandemic has definitely been a challenge. Because Scrapper’s Edge is contracted with USPS as a Village Post Office, the business was considered “essential,” so they never had to completely shut down. For a period of time they couldn’t allow people to wander around the store and shop for products, but they could allow them to enter for business services or to pick up orders. From the start of the pandemic, Scrapper’s Edge put a very good sanitizing and social distancing plan in place for its team and its customers. Customers are asked to stop in the front lobby, sanitize their hands, and wait to be directed to ensure proper social distancing. The staff regularly sanitizes touched surfaces and follows distancing requirements amongst themselves, as well. About six months before the pandemic hit, Sondra had updated their website (www.ScrappersEdge. net) which now includes most of their products. Being able to shop online has been helpful for customers. In addition to curbside pickup, they also Continued on next page

Chamber Member Spotlight ship locally and all over the United States, so the website has been an extremely beneficial marketing and sales tool. Sondra has looked at doing business during the pandemic as a puzzle. Her business has had to do so many things differently as guidelines and restrictions have been put in place. They have used emails and social media to reach customers and communicate about product and service offerings. In addition to hosting crafting classes (when they have been allowed to off and on), they have offered classes in different ways. For example, they have offered classes via Zoom, classes via kits with instructions that customers can do at home, and also classes via kits with both written and video instructions. Instead of focusing on the negative impacts to the business that the pandemic has created, Sondra and her team have looked for ways to communicate with and serve customers differently. The Scrapper’s Edge team has really appreciated that community members have embraced a “shop local” attitude. Local Chambers of Commerce have definitely helped encourage people to shop local and discover what local businesses have to offer. Many new customers have found their way to Scrapper’s Edge during the pandemic for teaching materials, educational workbooks and games, craft supplies as well as business services. Scrapper’s Edge will be celebrating 17 years in business this Summer. She continues to look at being a small business owner as a challenge and adapts as needed with a positive, can-do attitude. Since Sondra lives in Fortuna, she is always happy to deliver to businesses in the Friendly City free of charge. For more information about Scrapper’s Edge, call 707-445-9686, visit www.ScrappersEdge. net or stop by their store at the corner of 4th and I streets in Eureka.

Moore’s Sleep World

Dave Moore founded Moore’s Sleep World in 1986. In January 2008, it was purchased by Jennifer and Darin Rudick. Since then, Jennifer has increased store locations from one to four in Humboldt County. Starting with the flagship Eureka store, then 8

opening the Arcata location on the plaza in 2010, then the Fortuna location in 2012, and finally into McKinleyville in 2017. Moore’s Sleep World is proudly the only full-service mattress store in Humboldt County, and they take great pride in their customer service and quality products. They offer mattresses, adjustable bed bases, bed frames, mattress & pillow protectors, sheets, mattress toppers, and pillows. Jennifer believes that if they keep their selection broad, the quality high, customer service at its best with a focus on a restful and healthy night’s sleep, they can keep their clientele happy and resting well. Jennifer always wanted to have a location in Fortuna, but a previous furniture store had a location and she felt that would have been too much saturation for a small city. When that store (Low’s Furniture) announced they were closing, she capitalized on the opportunity and located the store behind the Low’s Furniture store in 2012. After a few years in that location, a Main Street opportunity presented itself and 1201 Main Street became their home and is where they are located at today. Jennifer admits that Moore’s has done very well during the pandemic, primarily because their products are a major household item, which many people have been laser focused on while being at home, but also because they offer major health benefits. During a pandemic, good health is on everybody’s mind ten-fold. The continued support by Humboldt County residents has been emotional for them and appreciated beyond words. Like many other businesses, Moore’s had to adapt to new CDC guidelines. This involved changing how they delivered products to customers and the safe removal of old mattresses. Jennifer understood immediately that Covid-19 was not something that was going to go away quickly and quietly, and that they were in the whirlpool along with every other business owner trying to find out what the new normal looked like. With every release of new legislation, cautionary colored tiers, and recommendations by the government, they went to work and molded their business model to fit and thrive. In the beginning months of the pandemic, they had difficulties receiving products from manufacturers but that has since been resolved. Jennifer’s largest takeaway from the last year that she can share with fellow business owners is to be

patient and embrace the fact that we are all in this together but never take your foot off the gas. Keep moving forward within the provided guidelines. Develop the tactics that work well and do not be afraid to toss into the bin the practices that simply do not work. Breathing new and effective practices into your business is seldom a bad thing. Moore’s continuously offers monthly sales events and takes great pains to bring the best deals and opportunities for customers to save every month. Your mattress is a major purchase in your overall health. This process cannot and should not be sacrificed based on convenience. To understand how your mattress will perform for you for years to come, you need to try out different beds first. Stop buying your major purchases online. Look to local businesses first, particularly those who have the knowledge and experience to help you. Moore’s has been the only full-service mattress store with mattress experts in our county for 35 years. It makes sense to trust a “Sleep Professional” rather than a quick delivery from a factory. Jennifer adds, “When you purchase outside our county you are taking dollars away from fixing our roads, maintaining our parks, and helping our county thrive. When you buy out of the area or online you are taking away from your community. Conversely, when you buy local, you are supporting our community and keeping your dollars here.” Moore’s Sleep World is located at 1201 Main St and can be reached by calling (707) 725-2222. Follow them online for the latest sales at www.mooressleepworld.net.

HR Fundamentals :

Spotlight on Remote Workers By Scott Walsh

W

orking remotely has been trending up for years. As we all know, working remotely has made its way into the mainstream since the pandemic started. This introduces another wrinkle to human resources management and leadership. We have seen three common threads from businesspeople recently regarding their remote workers. Employers are concerned with the safety of an at-home work environment, specifically what equipment and supplies their employees should be provided and what expenses they may encounter, and, whether employers have to accommodate a request to work remotely. Here is what our experiences have shown: Employers should be ensuring remote workers have a safe work environment. Many employers may feel uncomfortable about inspecting their employee’s home. However, it is our responsibility to ensure that our employees have a safe and appropriate remote workspace. Expense reimbursement is outlined by the California Labor Code Section 2802 which requires employers to reimburse employees for “reasonable and necessary” expenses incurred from their job duties. I would encourage employers to supply employees with all necessary supplies and equipment for performing the normal tasks of their job. We want to support our employees by keeping functions such as printing, distribution, and ancillary services a function of the central work office. Working remotely is a great privilege that should be reserved for your A+ employees. Make clear guidelines within your organization to determine who Buildqualifi to edgeesoffor the remote documentwork. Remote work is not

designed as an opportunity for someone to juggle personal responsibilities with their responsibilities to the company. It is a remote site where job duties are upheld, and performance does not decline. This is, of course, all at the discretion of the individual employer. The final topic I will briefly introduce is the teamwork aspect of having employees working remotely. The importance of the “check-in” cannot be understated. In the spirit of the Super Bowl just concluding, I will reference the huddle. Plays in a football game rarely last more than ten seconds, the huddle and pre-play organization lasts three times that long. Maintaining company culture is especially important while employees are off site. Check in frequently. We are honored to be a member of your team. Give a callofwith any questions. Humboldt NeuroHealth and WiredTogether Wraparound Celebrate First Year in Fort una

S

taff, Board Members, and supporters of Humboldt NeuroHealth and its WiredTogether Wraparound Program gathered at its Fortuna location on Monday, December 7, to celebrate their one year anniversary with a Ribbon Cutting sponsored by the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce. “At Humboldt NeuroHealth, we cultivate wellness and support the healing and strengthening of individuals and families to lift and empower our community. Thank you for celebrating that with us!” remarked Executive Director, Jennifer Brown (Pictured center left with scissors alongside Operations Manager Larissa Krause). Humboldt NeuroHealth (HNH) was established as a non-profit organization in 2019. With offices in Fortuna and Eureka, HNH has provided clinical services to more than 300 clients of all ages (they serve children, adults, families, seniors, and veterans) and held over 6,000 clinical sessions in its first year. “This is quite an accomplishment,” said Krause, “we are proud of our wraparound and clinical staff, and the hard work our clients have invested in their own healing and personal growth.” The WiredTogether Wraparound program serves adoptive families in the Eel River Valley and Humboldt Bay Area region. Wraparound is a team approach to helping families whose adopted children are at risk of being uprooted from their homes due to challenging behaviors or difficult circumstances. The team focuses on the needs of the child and their family in order to promote shared understanding, heal traumas, and encourage

healthier communication and relationships. HNH clinicians are well versed in a variety of the most current counseling modalities, including EMDR, CBT, Parts Work/IFS/CRM, DBT, and Narrative Therapy. One thing that sets HNH apart from other providers is extensive experience with Othmer Neurofeedback. Used in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions, neurofeedback gives clients a comprehensive experience with the best outcome possible. With Neurofeedback, HMH address problems of brain dysregulation. These include anxiety, depression, attention deficits, behavior disorders, various sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, PMS, and emotional disturbances. Neurofeedback is also useful for treating organic brain conditions such as seizures, the autism spectrum, and cerebral palsy. With over 40 years of research, neurofeedback therapy has been proven to improve brain function, so people are able to live their best life. Thank you to the City of Fortuna for putting out parking and traffic signs, Umpqua Bank for hosting the event, and all of Santa’s “elves” — Kristin Chambers, Becky Giacomini, Dianna Rios, and Melissa and Mallory Sanderson. Santa and Mrs. Claus enjoyed reading all the letters they received.
