WENTY-TWELVE marks the 91st anniversary of the Fortuna Rodeo. Thru the years many things have changed in our lives, but one thing is a constant in the Eel River Valley, come the 3rd week in July its rodeo time in Fortuna. Speaking of change, our Board of Directors has sadly accepted the resignation of longtime member, Ed Tanferani. Ed served on the board for over 32 years and was a driving force in keeping the Fortuna Rodeo the preeminent event in our community. Thanks Ed, for your many years of service. Our Fortuna Rodeo Grand Marshall for 2012 is Mr. Robert [Bob] Olsen. Bob has been an integral part of the Fortuna Rodeo for decades. In fact you may have seen Bob during Rodeo Week. He is the volunteer moving the myriad of portable bleachers to different locations around town with a lift truck for your seating comfort. He has spent countless hours during rodeo week provid-
ing this service. For many years Bob also hung all the banners across Main Street highlighting all the different events taking place in Fortuna. These are only a couple examples of Bob’s commitment to our community. Please join us in congratulating Bob and thanking him for a job well done. This year’s festivities are going to be bigger and better than ever. Our feature act is Juilian D’Usseau of McKinleyville. Jullian is a world class motorcycle extreme performer. He will show case his talents on Friday night and Sunday at the rodeo. As always we have a full week of inexpensive fun and excitement planned for the whole family. So check out the schedule and come on down to the friendly city July 16th thru the 22nd. Happy Trails, Shannon McWhorter, President

HE SPECTACLE OF THE FORTUNA RODEO IS A LARGE PART OF THE DRAW FOR FANS THAT CLAMOR TO THE TO THE RODEO GROUNDS every year. It seems only natural to try and capture and celebrate the strong visual element of the sport. In recent years, the cover of the Fortuna Rodeo guide has been a space reserved to honor the work and talents of local artists. This year is no different. Fortuna artist Judy Willis has been painting for nearly 50 years and was “thrilled” to be asked to contribute some color to Fortuna’s biggest annual event. “It’s one of the highlights of the year. The whole ambiance of the event is so inviting,” Willis says. She and her husband moved to Fortuna in 1996 and have been Rodeo frequenters ever since. “Fortuna’s just a great friendly town,” she says.
So what was the inspiration for this year’s cover image? Several years ago, Willis spoke to event organizer Don Brown about the possibility of being commissioned to paint for the rodeo someday. In 2010, she took a preemptive trip ringside with her digital camera — just in case she was called upon — and was particularly taken with the action involved in calf roping. “I have no idea who it is,” says Willis of the man that ended up her chosen subject. “I just liked what he was doing.” If you like what Willis is doing and are interested in owning a piece of Fortuna Rodeo history, this year’s original piece will be auctioned off at the Cowboy Mixer on Saturday night. The artist also signed 100 posters bearing her work that will be available for sale throughout the week. ✪

OU AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER A HELLUVA LONG TIME.”
88-year-old Robert “Bob” Olsen sits and gingerly leans against the store counter in Dave’s 76 Service/Gas Station. He wears dusty blue jeans and a Fortuna Rodeo ballcap and engages in some playful debate with station owner Dave Ansley about just how long he’s been helping out at the Main Street Fortuna service station “Have you been here six years? Eight years?” Dave inquires from underneath a bright blue “Dave’s 76” cap. “Feels like maybe longer,” Bob shoots back, puzzled. “Let me ask my wife,” Dave finally decides reaching for the phone. “She’s got a great memory.” The phone conversation is brief as Dave and his wife trade information back and forth in an attempt to determine the longevity of Olsen’s post-retirement tenure volunteering down at the station. Presented with the facts over the phone, Dave concedes that, all things considered, it could be closer to 20 years. “Holy criminy!” Dave exclaims. “Time flies!” A desire similar to the one that has com-

pelled Olsen to selflessly lend a hand down at the station has, over the years, compelled him to direct his efforts to making the Fortuna Rodeo great. Each year, the Rodeo honors an individual whom, over the years, has contributed their time and spirit to making the annual event happen by naming them Grand Marshall. 2012’s selection is Bob Olsen who’s been helping out in one capacity or another for over 60 years. Raised in the Eel River Valley, Olsen graduated from Ferndale High School in 1942 before serving the United States during World War II. After his time in the service, he settled back in Fortuna where he would marry his wife Lois and raise two daughters while working mainly at Wilbur T. “I’m very proud of what I accomplished in my lifetime when I look up and down the streets at everything I built,” Olsen states before motioning to a building across the street. “Like that one over there.” It was around the same time in the 1940s that he moved to Fortuna that he first got involved with the Rodeo festivities. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a title,” Olsen says. While he’s worn many hats over the years, Bob has most consistently been involved with the uptown events, specifically the annual parade — organizing participants, handing out numbers and making sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there. Olsen has so many parades under his belt that it’s impossible to pick a favorite. “There have been some great parades,” he says, smiling. “But when you do them every year one after the other, they tend to run together in your mind.” While all the colorful events are nice, Bob says he looks forward to the annual Fortuna Rodeo festivities more for the sense of community they — people working together towards a common end. “One guy can’t put this thing on,” he says before going on to sum up his time in the Friendly City. “It’s been a good life,” he says, but pauses to reconsider his words before amending them. “A great life.” ✪

HE FORTUNA RODEO IS ONE OF MANY ON THE CALIFORNIA COWBOYS PROFESSIONAL RODEO ASSOCIATION (CCPRA) SEASON SCHEDULE WHICH RUNS FROM LATE MARCH THROUGH LATE SEPTEMBER WITH EVENTS ALL OVER THE STATE.
The CCPRA is a non profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of rodeo. Formed in 1966, this regional organization sanctions rodeos throughout California, with numerous coapprovals in Nevada, Washington and Oregon. A steady growth in membership over the years has made the CCPRA the leading rodeo organization in the state of California. Cardholders include cowboys, cowgirls, judges, clowns, bullfighters, photographers, secretaries, announcers, timers, contractors, committee members, and fair managers. These members come from all walks of life. They are teachers, salesman, bank executives, veterinarians, peace officers, students, ranchers, etc. They are people who can usually rodeo only
on the weekends, but all have a love for rodeo. The contestants at CCPRA rodeos are trying for about $500,000.00 in prize money each year. The money comes from entry fees and added purses. Points are awarded on a point per dollar system. Of the total fees from each rodeo, 5% is deducted, with 2% held in the trust and added to the finals purse, 2% going to awards and promotion, and 1% into the general fund. The year’s championships are up for grabs at the finals rodeo, include the state queen competition. The weekend concludes with an awards presentation and celebration. The CCPRA continues the tradition of rodeo excitement for young and old alike. ✪

his just in! Much like during Christmas and Thanksgiving times, Rodeo Week calories don’t count! At least, that’s what we heard from someone. Somewhere. And it is a good thing since the 2012 Fortuna Rodeo carries on the tradition of bringing you tantalizing, gut-busting grub. Whether it be the succulent barbecue, Saturday’s fluffy pancake breakfast, Monday’s sizzlin’ Chili Cookoff, or tempting carnival delights, rest assured, you’re gonna be well fed this week. For starters, the Kiwanis Club of Fortuna is proud to once again offer a pancake breakfast Saturday morning. The community group breakfast has been a part of Rodeo festivities for approaching two decades. A guaranteed good time, the breakfast’s purpose falls in line with the Kiwanis spirit of improving communities. The club took over the long standing tradition of feeding the Rodeo masses from former event organizers the Business and Professional Women’s Association after their local chapter disbanded. Funds raised from the event go toward high school scholarships and in the past five years have awarded an average of $3,000 annually to deserving students to continue their educations. A good cause, sure, but you also get pancakes! The breakfast takes place at the Rohnerville Park Cookshack right next to the Rodeo grounds and is served from 7-11 a.m. on Saturday July 16. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk, OJ, applesauce, butter, hot syrup, and seconds for anyone who does not get their fill the first time around. Tickets are available at the cookshack on Saturday or in advance through any of the

Kiwanis Club members. Get your grub on for a good cause! More foodie goodness can be found at Saturday night’s Cowboy Mixer and Barbecue starting at 5 p.m. and centered at the Rohner Park Cook Shack. Cooked with love by the Native Sons of the Golden West and featuring music by Bill McBride, the meal serves as the precursor to the Rodeo Dance. $18 gets you both dinner and into the dance. Don’t eat too much. You’ve still gotta be able to boogie down to the sounds of The Rupert Duncan Band. And then there’s Sunday’s barbecue — which is bigger than anything you’ve ever done in your backyard. What does it take to put on a a Fortuna Rodeo-sized barbecue? A lot. Here’s a glimpse: 4,000 pounds of beef, 70 gallons of potato salad, 1,800 rolls, 100 gallons of beans and, of course, a nice sunny day. Good food takes time! The meat season crew meets, bright and early, at the main fire station on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. to season the meat. Later, at 4:00 p.m., the fire crew lights the fire in the pits. They add wood to the pits each hour until midnight when the coals are hopefully just right. The meat is added around 1:00 a.m. Sunday and the pits are sealed. At around 10:30 a.m. Sunday the pits are uncovered and the meat is removed for serving. Then, you eat. Yum! ✪

W
HILE THE FORTUNA RODEO WILL ENTERTAIN RODEO FANS HERE LOCALLY, ARGUABLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COWBOY TO EVER COME OUT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY, BILLY BUGENIG, WILL BE OFF COMPETING AT THE SPORT’S HIGHEST LEVELS. IN LATE JUNE WHEN THE 2012 RODEO GUIDE WENT TO PRESS, BUGENIG WAS SITTING
at eighth in the PRCA World Standings for steer wrestling. When we caught up with him on his cell phone he was driving across Nevada on his way to the Strawberry Days Rodeo in in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He tied for fourth in steer wrestling at that event. Then it was on to the next rodeo. “It’s something you dream about as a little kid,” Bugenig says. Bugenig estimates that he competes in nearly 70 rodeos a year. Getting to all those events means that Bugenig spends more time on the road than he’d probably like. “It’s tough being away from home so much,” he says. “But that’s the only way you’re going to make money.” When he’s not on the rodeo road, Bugening works as assistant rodeo coach at Feather River College in Quincy — a gig that allows him the freedom to simultaneously pursue his passion. “I can kinda come and go as please,” he says, noting that thankfully the majority of the rodeo season doesn’t
coincide with the school year. Bugenig has fond recollections of growing up in the Eel River Valley and attending the Fortuna Rodeo. Yes, he competed winning the Fred Barry Memorial Award for Humboldt County’s top hand on several occasions. But his memories extend back even further than that. “I used to ride in the parade when I was a little kid,” he says, noting that due to his busy schedule during rodeo season that it’s been a little under a decade since he’s been able to attend. Bugenig sees no end in sight for his rodeo career. He’s thankfully been able to avoid serious injury thus far — only undergoing minor shoulder surgery in 2007 — and while he’d like to eventually settle down (find a wife, have some kids), right now he’s living the rodeo dream. “It’s a way of life.” To keep track of Billy’s rodeo success, keep an eye on the standings and results listed on prorodeo.com. ✪

L
ET’S FACE IT: NO ONE LIKES TO SEE/DEAL WITH BORED CHILDREN. LUCKILY, THE 2012 FORTUNA RODEO ORGANIZERS, AS THEY DO EVERY YEAR, HAVE GOT YOUR BACK ON THIS ONE AND HAVE A SLEW OF “YEEHAW”WORTHY FESTIVITIES PLANNED FOR THE YOUNGER SET.
While the main rodeo spotlight has and will always be reserved for grown-ups, that doesn’t mean that the cowboys and cowgirls of tomorrow don’t get to join in the fun! Tuesday, July 17th kicks the junior fun off with healthy dose of children’s games at the Redwood Village Shopping Center starting at 6 p.m. Activities include the Kids’ Fireman’s muster, pony rides, face painting, wax hands, rock wall climbing and more. The good times rolleth on Wednesday, July 18th as Main Street shuts down from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m for street games, including the stick horse race, egg toss, kid’s fun jump and kid’s dummy roping. There’s also the traditional penny scramble, which is broken up by age: 3 and under (with parents), 4-5 years and 6-7 years. The youngins are sure to be hungry after all that effort. Refreshments of hot dogs and hamburgers will abound thanks to the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. A special shout out goes to Lithia Chrysler Dodge for sponsoring Wednesday night’s games. The Junior Rodeo has also been extended into Wednesday night and takes place at the Rodeo Grounds
in Rohner Park starting at 6 p.m. and then again on Thursday, July 19 at 9 a.m. Broken up by age group — Peewees (age 6 and under), Junior Boys and Girls (6-13 years) and Senior Boys and Girls (14-18) — the youngsters will compete in several trials in an attempt to be the All-Around Champion of their group. Five trophy saddles will be awarded, as well as 20 buckles to be divvied out among the best of each event. On Friday, July 20 at noon, the Carnival fires up the rides in Rohner Park. Unfortunately, due to insurance liability concerns, there won’t be any kids’ events Friday Night in the arena. Sorry, ’bout that one and thanks for understanding. Saturday, July 21 at noon is the big Downtown Parade, starting at Eighth Street and moving down Main towards Humboldt Tire on Fortuna Boulevard. Come to see the ponies and floats looking their festival best as they compete for the $200 best float prize. For those who want more, the carnival at Rohner Park runs through Sunday, the final day of festivities. After a week of fun, your kids should be too tuckered out to misbehave, right? Maybe. ✪

Revved Up Friday Night
T
HERE’S A REASON WHY RODEO WEEK’S FRIDAY NIGHT FESTIVITIES HAVE COME TO BE SECOND ONLY TO THE ACTUAL RODEO IN POPULARITY. IS IT THE FEELING OF COMMUNITY? THE COMPETITIVE SPECTACLE? OR IS IT JUST THAT WHIFFLE BALL BATS AND QUADS ARE JUST TOO SWEET A COMBO? PROBABLY ALL OF THAT.
That’s right. The Friday’s Motorcross Night highlight is none other than the glorious battle royale known as Quadiators. “It’s a lot of excitement, full on redneck action, and people just eat it up,” said one past Quadiator competitor. Never heard of Quadiators? Here’s how it works: Put two riders on a quad and tape a balloon to the helmet of the passenger. Give them a Wiffle ball bat, and watch as they swerve and circle their opponents while trying to bash them on the head, well, pop the balloon anyway. The first team to get popped loses, and is eliminated; the champs move on to another heat. And so it goes
until a grand champ is proclaimed. For those of you who grew up playing video games, think “Live Action Mario Kart.” If you’d like a preview, just search YouTube for “Quadiators” and you’ll find clips of the only-inFortuna action. Also scheduled for the evening is ATV, Rhino and side-by-side racing. Unfortunately, all of the traditional kids events that usually take place Friday had to be shelved due to insurance liability reasons. Break it to the youngster slowly. No animal scramble this year. What you’ll get instead is a warm-up performance from Motocross jumper Julian D’usseau. ✪

hile steeds of flesh and blood have been the bread and butter of the Fortuna Rodeo for the entirety of its 91 years, the addition of motorized riding feats has injected a new kind of excitement into the proceedings. It’s a natural progression. Both the rodeo and motorcross rely on human manipulation of an object more powerful than themselves to provide spectacle for audiences. The dance can be dangerous and, therefore, thrilling. Thus, the Fortuna Rodeo has embraced motorsports over recent years. This year
the Fortuna Rodeo welcomes pro/freestyle MX rider Julian D’usseau to the Friendly City to entertain the masses with jaw-dropping, motorized aerial feats. A local-kid-made-good, Julian graduated from Arcata High School before going on to carve out a successful career as a pro rider. With more than a decade of competing under his belt, D’usseau has competed at the highest levels of his sport. He’s participated in X-Game qualifying contests, the NBC Dew Tour and IFMA, as well as competing in Japan. D’usseau’s success has earned him plenty of mainstream exposure and the

respect of his peers as well. He has been a member of Metal Mulisha, has been interviewed in Transworld Motocross magazine and has garnered TV appearances on M80 on Fuel TV, as well as contest coverage on ESPN, Fuel, Outdoor Life, and LA TV Network. Wanna see what all the fuss is about? Check out a preview of D’usseau’s skills during Friday night festivities at the Rodeo Grounds. Then, catch his full performance on Sunday before the rodeo. OU’VE JUST SPENT A LONG SATURDAY TAKING IN ALL THE ACTION, SUSPENSE AND DRAMA OF THE FORTUNA RODEO. THE SUN BEATING
down. The dust flying up. Without really realizing it, you’ve been perched on the edge of your bleacher seat for hours, living and dying with each run. Finally, you catch your breath. Geez, you might be more tense than the competitors themselves! It’s time to unwind. Head on over to the cook shack, scarf down some friendly barbecued ribs, suck down a beer. OK. You’ve got your second wind goin’. It’s time to let loose. That’s when The Rupert Duncan Band swoops in to be your one-night-only musical savior. Rupert and the gang have the honor of being the party band for the annual high-energy, rowdy, tuck-the-kids-in-bed-’cuz-we’regettin’-down-tonight Cowboy Mixer at the Fortuna Fireman’s Pavillion starting at 8 p.m. Bring your good time energy. This band will give it right back. “We play music that makes people want to jump up and dance.” Duncan says. “If the people aren’t dancing and having a good time, then we aren’t doing our job.” Hailing from Sacramento, the Rupert Duncan Band has specialized in country, southern rock and gold ol’ rock ‘n’ roll for nearly a decade now. Over the past few years, Duncan has played gigs in all over Northern California, Oregon, Nevada and even Montana. Wondering if the band knows your favorite song? Head on over to rupertduncan.com and peruse its extensive setlist. You needin’ a little

bit of that “Old Time Rock ‘N’ Roll?” Duncan’s got it. Maybe you’d like to mellow out with a “Peaceful, Easy Feeling?” Check. Or maybe you’d like to waste away in “Margaritaville?” Well, you have that option. From Toby Keith and Dierks Bently all the way back to Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings, these guys have got stuff you can sing and dance to all night. More than just a jukebox, Rupert Duncan is also an accomplished songwriter in his own right. Over the years, Duncan has recorded songs in Nashville and even had the honor of being produced by the late Ronnie Montrose. While the covers are a lot of fun, naturally he gets a different personal satisfaction out of playing his original material and getting a reaction. “I love it when we play these songs at a show and people come up and say, ‘Who sings that song?’ That’s when I just light up and say, “We do! That’s our original stuff.” So if you’d like to make Rupert “light up,” mosey on up to the stage and request “Would You Take Me Drunk?” or “It’s Got To Be Country.” Sure, he’d be glad to play ‘em for ya. Saturday Night’s Cowboy Mixer is sponsored by Holiday Inn Express. ✪

ELCOME TO THE 91ST ANNUAL FORTUNA RODEO, THE CENTERPIECE OF THE FRIENDLY CITY’S WEEKLONG SUMMER CELEBRATION!
Fortuna is proud to offer the largest rodeo in the region, giving cowboys up and down the state a chance to show off the skills that built the American West. In addition to competing in the individual events, which are described in the following pages, each cowboy’s individual scores are totaled together to make them eligible for three all-around cowboy prizes — the rodeo’s top honors. They are:
All-Around Buckle
Given to the cowboy that has won the most money overall, across all events of the rodeo. Sponsor: Precision Intermedia.
The Fred Berry Memorial Buckle for the Humboldt County Top Hand. Given to the Humboldt County-based cowboy with the highest overall standings in all events of the rodeo. Sponsor: Patrick Berry.
Fortuna Rodeo Local All-Around Cowboy
Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle. Awarded to the top cowboy from Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity or Del Norte County. Sponsor: Doug Edgmon and the Edgmon family, American Ag Credit and Sequoia Gas Company.

Bull Riding Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling one-ton bull with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified. Spur Sponsor: Thirsty Bear Bar & Grill Bear River Casino. continued on next page

Saddle Bronc
Bareback Riding Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score.
Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage. PHoto BY CaroL nILeS PHotoGraPHY

Calf Roping Calf roping — also called “tie-down roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified.
Steer Wrestling
Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his
quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early.

The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” —
attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A fivesecond penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Spur Sponsor: The Playroom.

Breakaway Roping
Barrel Racing The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint back to the starting line. Riders are penalized five seconds if they tip over a barrel.
This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The contestant then gives chase and attempts to lasso the calf’s head. She has the rope tied to her saddle horn with a string and halts her horse. Time is called when the calf, which is still running, breaks the string.

s tempting as it might be to chomp down on plump, juicy corn dogs and mouth-watering cotton candy all Rodeo week, maybe we should make (just a few) healthy choices. How ‘bout this. You can have one extra corn dog if you promise to participate in the Fortuna Rodeo’s Annual 5K Run/Walk which takes place on Saturday, July 12, at 9 a.m. on a course that takes runners/walkers down Main Street and onto Fortuna Boulevard. It’s $20 to enter. Not sure you wanna wake up early on a Saturday just to end up sweaty and out of breath? Here’s extra incentive. Not only will you be burnin’ some calories, you’ll also be raising money for cancer research as all proceeds benefit Relay for Life. So lace up! The History of the Fortuna Rodeo
T
HE FORTUNA RODEO HAD ITS BEGINNINGS WAY BACK IN 1921 WHEN THE CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY PLANNED A PICNIC. It was to be an afternoon and evening affair, with “Rodeo Stunts” after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! Charles W. Moore of Ferndale was general chairman, with Frank Rolley as superintendent of the barbecue. On the
general committee were H. W. McWhorter, W. N. Russ, E. N. Tooby and Fred D. Smith, with volunteer help from others. Ben Snodgrass was director of judges with William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of
Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a 25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning….
A great tradition began in Fortuna; the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. continued on pg. 39

It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Because of that, the rodeo has a long-standing history of attracting some of the top livestock and rodeo cowboys on the West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a rip-roaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead
of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers, Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others. One year the rodeo went “long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a twoday event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make every day preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed, the show was bigger and better than ever. In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of
America and at the time became known as one of the best and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of the war fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948 Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪

Fred Barry Memorial Buckle
The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County Top Hand named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore. Fred was a local cowboy/rancher, born and raised in Humboldt County. He won the All Around Cowboy award that would later bear his name at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo. He would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede to name a few. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit.

The Tom McWhorter Scholarship
Rodeo has always been a McWhorter Family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. In 2005, Tom’s family established the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship for high school rodeo participants from District Two of the California High School Rodeo Association. Not a scholarship in the traditional sense, this fund is set up to help students (freshmen to seniors) pay for the expenses of participating in the sport of high school rodeo. There are eight rodeos during the school year open for these young athletes. The costs of entry fees, equipment, travel and training can be prohibitive to some. This scholarship fund is open to all students who are in good academic standing in their school and have a drive and passion to compete. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills

and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions that started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” stated McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Company. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” Congratulations go out to 2012’s Tom McWhorter Scholarship recipient Madison Vallerga. In her winning essay, she writes, “No one can take that feeling away from me when I am on my horse and turning a steer, or turning a barrel.” ✪
