President’s Message
W
ELCOME TO THE 2013 FORTUNA RODEO WEEK. IT’S BEEN 92 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST EDITION AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER. We have a fun-packed week planned, with something for everyone. The Fortuna Rodeo Association Board of Directors strives each year to put on a week of activities that everyone in the community can afford and enjoy. As you can see, we have a lot going on this week, and we could not do it without a tremendous amount of community support. All the local businesses that sponsor the rodeo with their contributions deserve a “BIG” Thank You! So please make a note of our sponsors and let them know you appreciate what they’re doing for our local community. The Fortuna Rodeo would be impossible to pull off without the cooperation and help of the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fortuna. They all work tirelessly to make the Fortuna Rodeo a success and show off “The Friendly City”. Lastly, I would like to comment on the
positive economic impact the Fortuna Rodeo has on our local economy. Literally thousands of people descend on Fortuna and the Eel River Valley during rodeo week. These people spend money in Fortuna and the surrounding communities that they otherwise would not. This influx of money not only helps local retailers, but also many area nonprofit organizations and the City of Fortuna. All profits from the Fortuna Rodeo can only be used to improve Rohner Park and is so stipulated in the Association’s bylaws. To date, the Fortuna Rodeo Association has contributed tens of thousands of dollars on park projects. Rohner Park is a gem and we are proud that we have been a big part of keeping it shined up. So bring the family down during Fortuna Rodeo Week and help us celebrate “Ridin’ with the red, white and blue!” You won’t be disappointed. Happy trails, Shannon McWhorter, President

HE BELT BUCKLE, CHAMPION COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS HAVE A SLEW OF ‘EM THAT ARE DINNER PLATE-SIZED AND SHINIER THAN THE CHRYSLER BUILDING. SOME REALLY BIG WINNERS have enough for every day of the week, day of the month, even. But, come on, how many buckles does a bronc buster really need? Sure, they’re big, shiny and communicate winner all the way, but a cowgirl can only race in one pair of Wranglers, one buckle, at a time. What if this year’s rodeo winners earned something just as distinguished and flashy but infinitely more practical? This year, the Fortuna Rodeo Association proudly introduces a new top prize for winning riders. It’s the Sponsor’s and Champion’s jacket, and it’ll be awarded to every winner of each event this year. Megan Boos of StitchWitch designed these top quality jackets with sponsor names on the front right pocket, event name and date on the front left, and distinctive Fortuna Rodeo logo stitched on the yoke. And they’re Wrangler, so you know they’re durable. Practical, goodlooking, and distinctive — you’ll be able to spot a Fortuna Rodeo winner all year long in one of these top-notch champion jackets! ✪

Artist Out Front: Roger Sanderson
B
RONCO BUSTING, BARREL RACING, BULL RIDING, COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS GIVING IT THEIR ALL FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME — this is the heart of the Fortuna Rodeo that keeps loyal fans coming back for more year after year. It seems natural to want to capture and celebrate the compelling visual elements of the competition. In recent years the cover of the Fortuna Rodeo guide has been a space reserved to honor the work and talents of local artists. This year, local painter Roger Sanderson gives his artistic all to the front cover in honor of the sweat and grit of team roping. The son of a Baptist minister, Sanderson moved to Humboldt County over 50 years ago. “Being commissioned to create this year’s rodeo poster,” says Sanderson, “has given me the
q
opportunity to give back to the community I grew up in and dearly love.” A paint contractor by trade, Sanderson in particular has a passion for airbrushing, the technique used for this year’s rodeo poster, and has applied his magic to skateboards, snowboards, guitars, motorcycles, murals, and portraits. He also creates custom graphics for local auto body shops and has designed several hand-painted fire helmets for Rio Dell’s Volunteer Fire Department. Sanderson is also a talented community musician who can be heard singing at weddings and community events and leading worship at the Rio Dell Baptist church. You can reach Roger Sanderson at Roger’s Design, 707-496-3014, or 707-764-3586. Find him on Facebook to view and “like” his work. ✪

“Well, you were a better runner anyway,” chides Jim. “In high school he could run like hell!” When Shirley Bartow wasn’t milking or farming on the Campbell ranch, he was playing basketball and running track for Fortuna High. There, he set records as a track and field athlete, studied hard, and collected Model-T Fords. After high school Shirley married Olivia Deniz, a “pretty little Portuguese girl from Ferndale.” Shirley and Olivia had a daughter, Barbara, and then shortly after, Shirley joined the Navy during WWII. For nearly two years he worked as an engineer in engine rooms making sure those mighty battleships stayed afloat and kept moving forward. After the war Shirley returned to Fortuna and had two sons, Jim and Ron, who took after their father’s athletic inclinations. The boys loved baseball, so Shirley became their coach and coached Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion teams. He did this for almost 10 years, mentoring close to 20 different teams of young ball players. One of his students, Randy Niemann, even went on to the Major Leagues. As of spring 2013 Niemann is a pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinal’s Double-A Springfield Cardinals. In 1960 he bought a jewelry shop and opened Bartow’s Jewelry, which he owned and operated until 2000 when his nephew purchased it from him. “He’s one of those guys who can do anything,” pronounces Jim, reaching for his water glass. “He flies airplanes, too. We did that right after the War.” Shirley smiles, leans forward slowly, “Fortuna. It’s a great place to live, full of wonderful people,” he says, looking at Jim, “and a beautiful golf course. I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be.” “Golf!” Proclaims Jim. “He plays golf, too!” ✪

Servin’ Up Some Good Grub
H
AVE YOU HEARD? JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS AND THANKSGIVING, RODEO WEEK CALORIES DON’T COUNT! AT LEAST, THAT’S WHAT WE HEARD FROM SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE. And it is a good thing since the 2012 Fortuna Rodeo carries on the tradition of bringing you tantalizing, gut-busting grub. There’s the tangy succulent barbecue along with Saturday’s fluffy pancake breakfast. Monday’s sizzlin’ Chili Cook-off, and tempting carnival delights. No doubt, there’s much to whet the appetite and keep you well fed all week long. For starters, the Kiwanis Club of Fortuna is proud to once again to offer a pancake breakfast Saturday morning. A guaranteed good and tasty time! This community group breakfast has been a part of Rodeo festivities for nearly two decades. Its purpose falls in line with the Kiwanis spirit of improving communities. Funds raised from the event go toward high school scholarships and in the past six years have awarded an average of $3,000 annually to deserving students to continue their educations. A good cause, sure, but you also get pancakes! The breakfast takes place at the Rohner Park Cook Shack right next to the Rodeo grounds and is served from 7-11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk, OJ, applesauce, butter, hot syrup, and seconds for anyone who does not get their fill the first time around. Tickets are available at the cookshack on Saturday or in advance through any of the Kiwanis Club members. Good grub, GREAT cause! More good times and great grub can be found
at Saturday night’s Cowboy Mixer and Barbecue starting at 5 p.m. and centered at the Rohner Park Cook Shack. All that tantalizing beef and pork is smoked with love by the Native Sons of the Golden West. This year’s mixer features an art raffle where one very lucky rodeo pardner will proudly walk away with Roger Sanderson’s original artwork for this year’s Fortuna Rodeo poster. The mixer and raffle set the scene for the all-new “Bands, Bulls, and Brews” event. And you won’t want to miss that — local favorites the Roadmasters and Rebel Outlaws provide the perfect country-rock soundtrack for an evening of dancing, professional bull riding, and cowboy poker. And then there’s Sunday’s barbecue with 4,000 pounds of beef, 70 gallons of potato salad, 1,800 rolls, and 100 gallons of beans. Way bigger than anything you’ve ever done in your backyard, right? Here’s what it takes to make a Fortuna Rodeo-sized barbecue happen: a meat crew that assembles bright and early at the main fire station Saturday at 7 a.m. to season the meat. Then, a fire crew that lights the BBQ fire pits at 4 p.m. These men and women add wood to the pits each hour until midnight when the coals are hopefully just right. Then, around 1 a.m. Sunday, they add all 4,000 pounds of meat and seal up the pits. Around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning the pits are uncovered and the meat is removed for serving. Mm-mm, yum! For $12, you get a fine plate of barbecue infused with a community’s worth of love, patience, and dedication. Sunday Barbecue at the Fortuna Rodeo — the perfect combo of food and love! ✪

There’s also the traditional penny scramble, which is broken up by age: 3 and under (with parents), 4-5 years and 6-7 years. After all that racin’, egg tossin’, scramblin’ and ropin’, the kids are bound to be hungry. Thanks to the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, hot dogs and hamburgers will abound! The Junior Rodeo extends into Wednesday night and takes place at the Rodeo Grounds in Rohner Park starting at 6 p.m. and then again on Thursday, July 18 at 9 a.m. Broken up by age group — Peewees (age 6 and under), Junior Boys and Girls (6-13 years) and Senior Boys and Girls (14-18) — the youngsters will compete in several trials for the title of All-Around Champion of their group. Five trophy saddles will
be awarded, as well as 20 buckles to be divvied out among the best of each event. Friday, July 19, at noon the Carnival fires up the rides in Rohner Park. Come on, kids of all ages, get your Tilt-a-Whirl on! Saturday, July 20, at noon is the big Downtown Parade, starting at Eighth Street and moving down Main toward Humboldt Tire on Fortuna Boulevard. Come see the ponies and floats looking their festival best as they compete for the $200 best float prize. For those who want more, the carnival at Rohner Park runs through Sunday, the final day of festivities. Wow, what a week of fun and competition — you kids’ll be too plum tuckered out to misbehave for at least a week. ATURDAY NIGHT — AFTER THE CARNIVAL THRILLS, THE BIG PARADE, ALL THAT BARREL racing, the cowboy mixer and barbecue — ready for something just as fun and a little different? Yeah? Oh, YEAH! This year, Saturday night at the Fortuna Rodeo promises a kickin’ combo of live music, local brews, and buckin’ bulls. Bands, Bulls, and Brews, baby, happening in Rohner Park. Local music faves the Roadmasters and Rebel Outlaws set the soundtrack for an entertaining and action-packed evening of bull riding, beer drinking, and cowboy poker. a few new players the Roadmasters become the Rebel Outlaws, locked and loaded for country rock fun, certain to get things off on the right foot. Then the cowboy action gets kickin’. Bull riding. Uh huh, that’s right, Saturday night includes three rounds of professional bull riding in all its wild, genuine, guts and all-out glory. Only 30 of the region’s top riders will compete for a $3,000 cash prize. Those cowboys’ll be hanging on to make that qualifying 8-second ride on bucking bulls from the West Coast Rodeo Co. Ah, and that Cowboy poker — what exactly is that? Imagine: a table and 10 chairs set up in the middle of the Rohner Park arena — where the bulls buck. Players take a seat and ante up $25 to play a hand of Texas Holdem’. Sounds harmless and safe right? Oh, boy, then a rip roarin’ bull is let loose in the arena. The bull’s job is to make sure no one’s bluffing. If they are, that bull’ll clear ’em out. The last player still sitting wins and goes home with $500. For real — a bull let loose in the middle of a poker game and whoever remains seated wins. You’ll want to be there for this, and that’s no bull. Gates open at 7 p.m. and it’s only $5 per person to get in. Don’t miss this new, entertaining event proudly sponsored by Whitchurch Engineering. ✪

LEONARD BOWMAN
JUNE CALLAHAN
OR NEARLY 20 YEARS, THE BEAR RIVER BAND OF ROHNERVILLE RANCHERIA HAS PROUDLY SPONSORED the Fortuna Rodeo. Tribal Chairman Leonard Bowman and Council Women, Janice McGinnis, June Callahan and Carole Reeves worked diligently to create a bright future for the people of the Bear River Band. Through their work in the Tribe and Fortuna area, these leaders helped build a bridge between two communities with distinctly different ways of life. Their work has contributed to a mutual relationship between the Bear River Band and Fortuna Rodeo Association. The Fortuna Rodeo Association extends heartfelt gratitude to Chairman Bowman, Janice McGinnis, and Carol Reeves for their work with and support of the Fortuna Rodeo. Their enthusiasm, generosity, and positivity will be greatly missed in the Rodeo community.

CAROLE REEVES
Tribal Chairman for eight years, Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria Losing a leader is like losing a guide or a scout on a journey or a quest. Like with everything in the natural world, it is a great tragedy to lose the ones we entrust with faith that their leadership will get everyone to the place we seek. Not just with a nation, but like that with a family, the loss is felt time in memoriam. The loss of Leonard Smith Bowman will be felt for generations to come as will his legacy with our tribe in all its affairs and relations. Lessons learned during his tenure by mistakes and achievements alike are just like in ancestral times, they come by the day, they come by the night over and over again. Yet we are still on the path in which we,
as a people, seek and are truly grateful for the guidance and leadership that has gotten us this far. Thank you, Len.
June Callahan
Councilwoman, Community Builder, Youth Advocate June was raised on the Rohnerville Rancheria, attended Fortuna High School, and graduated the Heald Business School in 1982. She served on Bear River Tribal Council from 2008 to 2012, and advocated for community building and for creating opportunities for tribal youth. A mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, June was the epitome of strength and compassion for her family and within her community.
Janice McGinnis
Councilwoman, Mother of Seven Born May 12, 1946, Janice was a proud member of the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, who lived most of her life in Humboldt County. She served her Tribe for over 20 years in several Council positions and as Enrollment/Roads Coordinator. Janice worked for a brighter future for the members of the Bear River Band.
Carole Reeves
Councilwoman, Board Member, Mother of Two Carole served on the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria Tribal Council for 16 years and served eight years on the Bear River Casino Board of Directors. AROL NILES TAKES A DEEP BREATH, PAUSES, AND LOOKS OUT THE LOLETA BAKERY CAFÉ WINDOW. “I’VE ALWAYS LOVED PHOTOGRAPHY,” SHE EXHALES, gently tapping her fingers on the table top and continues. “My first camera was in fourth grade at Christmas, a Kodak 110 that loaded film in the back. I wanted that camera so badly,” recalls Niles. But she almost didn’t get it. Her mother had hidden the gift away in a cupboard and forgotten about it. “But then she remembered and gave it to me unwrapped,” laughs Niles. “I was so happy, I was in tears.” Carol Niles is the official photographer of the Fortuna Rodeo, and her life-long passion for photography shows. In her images of cowboys clinging to bulls and broncos, portraits of winning ropers and racers, her action shots of quad riders tearing up the track, Niles captures the essence of determination, pride, and commitment often wrought on contestants’ faces. Her work looks as if she’s spent a lifetime behind the lens, but really, photography is her second career. “I spent 13 years as a dental assistant. Then in 2001 when my husband and I moved to Sacramento, I made a promise to myself to focus on photography and honing my skills.” When Niles wasn’t dental assisting, she was interning in darkrooms, taking private classes, and assisting photographers on shoots. She did this diligently for six years learning from pros, applying their tips,

and refining her skills. In 2007 Niles, who grew up in Eureka, returned with her husband to Humboldt County and settled in Fortuna. And ever since, she has been keenly focused on taking great photos and growing her photography business. When she isn’t covering the Fortuna Rodeo, she’s busy photographing weddings, high school senior portraits, and has most recently begun childbirth photography. Niles also donates her time and skills to Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a national non-profit organization that provides remembrance photography for parents who have suffered the loss of a baby. “I am honored and humbled that I get to be at so many people’s very special life events,” Niles says, smiling subtly, confidently, “I have a commitment to archiving personal history that I take seriously.” Carol Niles’ Fortuna Rodeo photography can be found and ordered online at www. fortunarodeo.com or by contacting Carol directly at carol@carolnilesphotography.com. ELCOME TO THE 92ND ANNUAL FORTUNA RODEO, THE CENTERPIECE OF THE FRIENDLY CITY’S WEEKLONG SUMMER CELEBRATION! Fortuna is proud to offer the largest rodeo in the region, giving cowboys up and down the state a chance to show off the skills that built the American West. They are:

Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling one-ton bull with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified. Trophy Jacket Sponsor: Thirsty Bear Lounge/ Bear River Casino continued on next page

Saddle Bronc
Bareback Riding Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage.

Trophy Jacket Sponsor: Humboldt Fence
Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Calf Roping Calf roping — also called “tie-down roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified.
Steer Wrestling
Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When
he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early. Trophy Jacket Sponsor: Wyckoff’s Plumbing

Team Roping
www.fortunarodeo.com The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” —
attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A fivesecond penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Trophy Jacket Sponsor: The Playroom

Barrel Racing The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint bac k to the starting line. Riders are penalized five seconds if they tip over a barrel.
This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The contestant then gives chase and attempts to lasso the calf’s head. She has the rope tied to her saddle horn with a string and halts her horse. Time is called when the calf, which is still running, breaks the string.

The History of the Fortuna Rodeo
T
HE FORTUNA RODEO HAD ITS BEGINNINGS WAY BACK IN 1921 WHEN THE CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY PLANNED A PICNIC. It was to be an afternoon and evening affair, with “Rodeo Stunts” after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! Charles W. Moore of Ferndale was general chairman, with Frank Rolley as superintendent of the barbecue. On the general committee were H. W. McWhorter, W. N. Russ, E. N. Tooby and Fred D. Smith, with volunteer help from others. Ben Snodgrass was director of judges with

William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a 25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning. … A great tradition began in Fortuna — the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Because of that, the rodeo has a longstanding history of attracting some of the top livestock and rodeo cowboys on the continued on pg. 39

West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a rip-roaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers, Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others. One year the rodeo went
“long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a twoday event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make every day preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed, the show was bigger and better than ever.
In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of America and at the time became known as one of the best and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of the war fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948 Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪

Smalltown heroes
Keeping the Dream Alive The Fortuna Rodeo is only as special as the people that have worked tirelessly each and every year to ensure that it continues to be a binding force for the Eel River Valley community. As such, a tradition of honoring those who came before as well as those who carry on the work permeate the annual proceedings. Learn about some of the people who made and continue to add to the legacy.
Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle
The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Gary was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbeque while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. Gary was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and a giving personality. American AgCredit and Sequoia Gas Co. are proud to sponsor this award.

Fred Barry Memorial Buckle
The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County Top Hand named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore. Fred was a local cowboy/rancher, born and raised in Humboldt County. He won the All Around Cowboy award that would later bear his name at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo. He would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede to name a few. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit.
Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle
This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s All-Around Cowboy. Precision Intermedia proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter Family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to high school rodeo participants from District Two of the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” stated McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪
