ust in time for the cadre of bullfighters arriving in Fortuna this summer, the 2017 artwork gracing the Rodeo Guide cover captures the raw power of a wild bull. Created by local Eel Valley resident and artist Robert Frawley, the image was drawn on a Wacom tablet. Frawley, a retired bullfighter himself, has chronic tramatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition caused by too many concussions sustained as a young man. Frawley was competitive in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for 11 years. “Your brain’s always trying to work around the injury, so your symptoms change all the time,” explains Frawley. In past few years, CTE started causing spasms in his right hand, threatening Frawley’s lifelong love for painting and drawing. Inspired by an artist named
Aaron Blaise, Frawley discovered the world of digital art and began “painting” on a tablet. If his hand jerks across the screen, threatening to ruin an image, he can simply click “Undo.” Adapting to his new medium enthusiastically, Frawley appreciates how his overflowing collection of art supplies is now conveniently contained within his tablet. Frawley’s colorful and nostalgic images are inspired by pastoral ranches, cowboys and horses of the Eel River Valley. A Humboldt County resident most of his adult life, today Frawley enjoys retirement on his ranch in Hydesville. He and his son often attend the Fortuna Rodeo each summer — they’ll be sure to not miss the debut of Bullfighters Only on Friday night, July 14 at the Fortuna Rodeo. ✪

Doug Moore, 2017 Fortuna Rodeo Grand Marshal By Nora Mounce
T
he rodeo parade on Main Street dates back to 1927, when a “historical pioneer pageant,” was added to the Redwood Rodeo festivities in Fortuna. Local historian Susan O’Hara believes that the tradition of appointing a Grand Marshal started shortly after the end of World War II. The first historical record of a Grand Marshal in Fortuna was printed in the Eureka Humboldt TimesStandard in 1960, which reported that the 82-year-old judge and sporting good storeowner L.L. Bryan, would serve as Grand Marshal that year. The tradition of honoring an Eel River Valley resident who has served his or her community continues at the 96th Fortuna Rodeo. The rodeo board strives to select those with a direct impact on the rodeo itself — keeping the heritage of rodeo alive in Fortuna for 96 years is no small feat! Locals who grew up ranching and cowboy-ing have helped preserve the Fortuna Rodeo as a celebration of the rural way of life. In 2017, the rodeo board selected Doug Moore of Holmes Flat as the Grand Marshal. A decorated cowboy with hundreds of rodeos and many saddles (the rodeo equivalent of gold medals) under his belt, Moore is a shoo-in to receive the honor. A multi-year winner of the All-Around Saddle at the Fortuna Rodeo, Moore’s bigger legacy is the countless hours he spent teaching aspiring cowboys to rope in Humboldt County. Ben McWhorter remembers the first day he met Moore on his ranch in Holmes Flat. Ben’s younger sister was interested in learning how to rope, so Ben tagged along. “I was kinda swinging a rope on the ground and Doug came up to me and said, ‘Man, you sure swing a rope good!’” remembers McWhorter. The vote of confidence kept young
Ben coming to Holmes Flat for roping lessons, where Moore planted a passion for horses, ranches and rodeos in junior cowboys throughout Humboldt County. McWhorter went on to ride and rodeo in high school, quitting the basketball team, and going on to compete in rodeo at Cal Poly. Along with McWhorter and many other youngsters, Moore tutored his two nephews, Wes and Cameron Moore, all the way to the National Finals Rodeo. “They were real good ropers,” says Moore, in an understatement typical of his humble nature. When the Moore boys competed at the Nationals, the competition was aired on ESPN — a pretty big deal for two young cowboys from Redcrest. At 86 years old, Moore still maintains his ranch in Holmes Flat, where he’s lived on the Eel River for the past 50 years. Understanding how generous and talented Doug Moore has been sharing his roping skills, the rodeo board is thrilled to watch Doug and his wife Debbie lead the parade this year. “He’s always going,” says McWhorter. “You’re not gonna see Doug sitting back in an easy chair.” McWhorter confesses that he hopes to throw a rope as clean and crisp as Doug Moore someday. Be sure not to miss the parade on Saturday, July 15 this year at the Fortuna Rodeo. As usual, Doug Moore will be on the move. ✪
Thankyou Doug! Wave “hello” to Doug Moore as he and many other local dignitaries and service organizations roll down Main Street during the Rodeo Parade beginning at noon on Saturday, July 15.

tasting begins at 5 p.m. sharp. Tasting is free (while supplies last) but bring some spending cash to purchase People’s Choice tickets and vote for the best chili in the following categories: People’s Choice, Best All-Beef, Rookie of the Year, Best Pro Chili, Best Dressed, Best Booth and Fortuna’s Best Chili. A fee of $25 and application submitted by July 6 guarantees your entry. Call 725-3959 or email erin@fortunachamber.com for more info. Telehone On Wednesday, the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department has dinner covered for the family, serving hamburgers and hotdogs from at 11th and Main streets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday morning, start the day off with a hearty pancake breakfast cooked up by the Fortuna Kiwanis Club at Rohner Park. Rise and shine for breakfast by 7 a.m. to fill your plate with hot pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and juice. Breakfast is $6 per adult and kids 12 and under eat for $4. For local foodies, Sunday morning is the peak of excitement during rodeo
week. Digging into a plate of famous rodeo barbecue, it’s clear these cowboys know their way around the pit. Fortuna Rodeo board members Robb Foley and Dave Nicholson head up the rodeo barbecue committee, overseeing a crew of a few dozen volunteers. In order to get on the crew, “Somebody has to die and leave your their spot,” says Nicholson. Working as a well-oiled machine, volunteers unpack the meat from the truck on Saturday morning, before rolling it in white wine and the secret rodeo barbecue mix. Volunteers tend the pit fires and watch over the meat until well after midnight. A fresh, well-rested crew of volunteers is back by 6 a.m. on Sunday to finish off preparations for Sunday’s feast. By 11 a.m., they are ready to serve 4,000 pounds of beef, 80 gallons of potato salad, 1,800 rolls, 100 pounds of beans and a trough of Jell-O parfait to 2,000 happy customers. At $15 per plate, proceeds support maintaining Rohner Park, so bring your appetite! ✪

ortuna Rodeo Board President Shannon McWhorter fondly remembers the joy of being a kid in Fortuna when the rodeo rolled into town. Set free from chores to explore the rodeo grounds, McWhorter remembers how much fun the carnival was for him and his siblings. “It’s a big deal for small town,” says McWhorter. The carnival offers big rides for thrill seekers, as well as games and fun rides for little tykes. Opening Tuesday evning and running through Sunday, starting at noon each day, the carnival is free to enter at Rohner Park (rides must be purchased separately). Offering fun for the entire family is what the rodeo has always been about, explains McWhorter, whose grandchildren love rodeo week as much as he does. Each day of the rodeo
brings different activities for the kiddos — don’t let them miss the memories! Tuesday — Head to the Redwood Village Shopping Center at South Fortuna Boulevard and Redwood Way from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for a night of free activities and fun! Kiddos can make a wax paraffin hand, get their faces painted and go wild drawing on the sidewalk. Help your kids get excited about summer fitness with demonstrations by Healthsport. Fire Chief Lon Winburn and the Fortuna Fire Department will be on site to host a “mini-muster” for the kids. Finally, dig through your old costume bin for cowboy hats and belt buckles — your little cowpokes can compete in a Western-themed costume contest at 7:15 p.m.! Register by 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday night, get the family together and stroll down to Main Street
from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for old-timey games hosted by the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. Tell your little cowboys and cowgirls to start practicing their egg toss now. Stick horse races, a bounce house and a rope-the-dummy contest round out the evening’s festivities. The rodeo committee and local businesses partner up each year to donate $1,000 in coins for the Tony Johnston penny toss. While your kids are grabbing up extra allowance, Mom and Dad don’t have to worry about dinner — the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department’s muster team will be selling hamburgers and hotdogs, part of its annual fundraising drive. Finally, don’t go home without a free ice cream from the rodeo board! The Junior Rodeo kicks off Wednesday night at 5 p.m. This year all admissions
are free to the largest junior rodeo in Northern California! Watch our hardworking local teens compete against the best juniors in the state in dummy roping, steer daubing and calf riding. The big winners will take home serious cash prizes. Thursday — Junior rodeo continues all day, wrapping up with junior barrel racing at 7 p.m. The Fortuna Junior Rodeo is known for having the highest cash paybacks in Northern California and is a hotly contested showdown on the California Junior Rodeo circuit. Saturday — It’s time for a parade! Led by this year’s Grand Marshal Doug Moore, floats decorated by local school and community groups will cruise down Main Street starting at noon. The best float entered by a junior civic group will win a $200 prize! ✪

odeo board president and local cowboy Shannon McWhorter used his small town charm to rope a big city act in Fortuna this year. All the way from San Antonio, Texas, Bullfighters Only will premier at the Fortuna Rodeo on Friday night, July 14. Boasting 12 of the most talented and daring bullfighters in the country, Bullfighters Only typically performs at professional rodeos and big arenas across the country. McWhorter believes he was able to recruit the bullfighting cadre thanks to the good reputation and mild temperatures of The Friendly City. Fortuna may be the only rodeo in the country boasting 70 degrees of sunshine in the middle of July! Many events at the rodeo are a mystery to audiences outside of cowboy culture, bullfighting most certainly included. Understanding that the public knows little about modern bullfighting, Bullfighters Only (BFO) was created to promote the popularity and acceptance of freestyle bullfighting worldwide. BFO writes, “Since our inception, BFO has evolved into a platform that serves to excite the western community, educate both the avid and

Rodeo Grounds Renovations By Nora Mounce
L
ong before the crowds of locals and visiting tourists arrive in Rohner Park for a week of family fun, sportsmanship and barbecue, volunteers spend hours prepping the rodeo grounds at Rohner Park. Just off of Main Street in downtown Fortuna, Rohner Park is a redwood-studded paradise established by mutual conservancy efforts between the city of Fortuna and the Rohner family. The rodeo grounds sit at the heart of the park, which is surrounded by nearly 2 miles of hiking trails through mature secondgrowth redwood forests. In 2017, the rodeo board allocated funds to expand the rodeo spectator area, allowing for additional concession booths. Current rodeo board president Shannon McWhorter explains that a key tenet of
the board’s charter is to “use any profits generated by the rodeo to beautify and maintain Rohner Park.” He estimates that the rodeo board has contributed more than $1 million dollars of renovation funds to the park. When looking up at the redwoods at Rohner Park this July, take a moment to reflect on the 96 years of rodeo that have taken place under their canopy. Thank you to the City of Fortuna, O&M Industries, Fortuna Iron, Whitchurch Engineering, Ken Christen, Wendt Construction, Mercer-Fraser Company, Burgess Electric, Sequoia Gas Company, Wyckoff Plumbing, Bob Anderson Construction and Sequoia Orchids & Redwood for all their help in completing this project! ✪

Saturday Night– Bulls, Broncs, Bands & Brews By Nora Mounce
A
perfect event for cowboys and cowgirls to shine their boots and do-si-do into town, Saturday night’s Bulls, Broncs, Bands & Brews promises something for everyone. Gates open to the rodeo grounds at 6 p.m. with admission for all ages $10 — keeping rodeo week family friendly and affordable is a top priority for the rodeo board. Music starts at 7 p.m. with the return of southern rock group The Remedy, which will keep toes tapping with original songs and classic covers. At 8 p.m., the energy really picks up with bull and bronc riding. The rodeo board added broncs to the lineup in 2016 and crowds enjoyed watching the nuances between the skill sets required by the riders. While bulls are much larger and more powerful animals, bucking broncs provide a wildcard element while zipping around the arena with a rider. Both events
are historically classic rodeo competitions but it’s a rare opportunity to see talented riders compete in both bull and bronc riding at an amateur rodeo. New in 2017, youth competing in mutton busting and steer riding will round out the evening’s entertainment. After everyone rides, the top four competitors in each event return for the “short go” — rodeo slang for the final championship. The winners will go home with a split of the purse, which is stuffed with the riders’ entry fees and a generous $2,000 ($1,000 added to each event) from the Fortuna Rodeo board. Chasing that kind of coin will certainly help those riders hang on tight! If you’re new to rodeo, Bulls, Broncs, Bands & Brews is a great introduction to the fun, style and tradition of rodeo culture. It also pairs well with an ice-cold

Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling 1-ton bull, holding on with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified.

Saddle Bronc Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage. Sponsor: Humboldt Fence Company

Bareback Riding Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Steer Wrestling
Team Roping
Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early.
The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” — attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Sponsor: The Playroom

Calf Roping Calf roping — also called “tiedown roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified. Sponsor: St. Joseph Hospital/ Redwood Memorial Hospital

This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The History of the Fortuna Rodeo By Alex Service & Susan O’Hara
I
n 1921 the recently formed Humboldt Stockmen’s Association decided that its annual picnic in Fortuna would include a rodeo to provide entertainment for the stockmen and their families. From this beginning, the Fortuna Rodeo has grown and changed with the times, but remains the focal point for summer entertainment in the Eel River Valley. The roots of the rodeo lie in both the stockmen’s history of raising cattle to feed the various timber company crews and in the everyday transportation by horse that was gradually being replaced by automobiles. The rodeo also harkened back to a romanticized version of the Old West promoted in wild west shows by entertainers like Buffalo Bill Cody. Cattle-based industries have a rich history in Humboldt County. One of the first cattle drives in Humboldt was in 1852, when Joseph Russ brought a herd to Bear River Ridge where he started his ranch. Those cattle fed the many lumber company crews in the county. The rich delta farmlands of the valley also became the sites of many dairies. In 1915, the Humboldt Stockmen’s Association formed to help improve the
quality of stock raised by the ranchers. Further goals of the association were to provide protection for their animals and prevent stock being stolen. The Stockmen’s Association became very popular and 300 people attended their picnic and rodeo in 1921. Some of the association’s charter members were Tim Barry, Henry Devoy, Fred Hinkley, Stanley Hunt, Dr. J.W. Logan, Ted Lytle, Jack McClelland, Harry McWhorter, Charles Moore, Doug Prior, Rupert Porter, Joe Russ, William Russ, Fred Smith, Ben Snodgrass, Glen Timmons and Jack Tamboury. The 1921 picnic and rodeo was not the first rodeo-type event held in the valley. In 1912, Jess Stahl, an African American from Ferndale, held a rough riding demonstration at the Rohnerville Fairgrounds, riding “outlaw” horses famed for being difficult to ride. Stahl was destined to become recognized in the Cowboy Hall of Fame for his exploits as bronco rider and rodeo participant. At the 1919 Humboldt County Fair, the Oakland Tribune reported “Seaman John Kelly of the destroyer Boggs carried off the honors of the wild west show of the Humboldt County Fair here

by riding an outlaw bronco to a standstill.” During the 1910s several “rough riding festivals” were held in the valley. Most people during that time used horses for transportation and appreciated the skill necessary to ride an untamed one. None of these events were held annually and it was not until the Stockmen’s event of 1921 that a formal rodeo was held in Humboldt County. Rodeos were becoming popular in California in the late 1910s, with events being held in Salinas beginning in 1911 and in Hayward, Willits and Red Bluff in 1921. The Fortuna event quickly became popular both on the rodeo circuit and with local residents. Many planned to come to Fortuna to see the parade and the rodeo and to dance. By 1925 the rodeo had become a three-day event, with dancing Friday and Saturday nights. In addition to the regular rodeo events, there was horse racing on the newly built racetrack around the arena. It was also a “must” for politicians of the era to stop by the rodeo to visit with their constituents. The Redwood Rodeo, as it became known, was only one of the attractions of that weekend. The parade became a part of the rodeo by 1927, when it was billed as a “historical pioneer pageant.” One of the parade participants that year was William Sofer, dressed as a Spanish Californian padre driving an old-time ox team. The organizers of the rodeo have always kept in mind that the rodeo is both a partici-
pant and a spectator event. One of the attractions of the 1938 rodeo was 2-year-old “Baby Lee Persico and his pony Buck.” The two put on a riding demonstration that was very popular with the audience. From 1942-1945, during World War II, there was no rodeo. It resumed in 1946, with more than $3,400 in prize money for the contestants. The rodeo events were limited to two days, a tradition that has continued. The 1940s also saw the institution of a Rodeo Queen. In 1948, for example, the Rodeo Queen was Stella James, outfitted in western attire courtesy of the rodeo directors. The 1950s saw additions to the festivities, like the pancake breakfast and the carnival. A pit barbecue dinner also became part of the event in the 1950s. Over the decades, other highlights such as the firemen’s events, chili cook-off and quad riders have been added. The core of the event remains the celebration of the Old West, our local history and Fortuna. With the parade, dances, pancake breakfast and barbecue, the rodeo has become a celebration of Fortuna and the people who live here. The Stockmen’s Association continued to host the event until the late 1920s, when the rodeo was organized and operated by the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and the Fortuna Fire Department. And the Rodeo Association formed in 1952. Today the Fortuna Rodeo continues its legacy as a beloved annual celebration that gives back to its community. ✪

here are plenty of reasons to mount up for rodeo competition, practice for countless hours and risk injury in the dusty arena. But long after the cheering has subsided and the purse is spent, the trophies taken home by champion cowboys shine on. Here are the the storied prizes riders are shooting for at the Fortuna Rodeo.
Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Edgmon was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbecue while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. Gary was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and a giving personality. American AgCredit and Sequoia Gas Co. are proud to sponsor this award.
Fred Barry Memorial Buckle
The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle, named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore, is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County top hand. Born and raised in Humboldt County, Barry was a cowboy and rancher. He won the all-around cowboy award at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo and would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit, sponsored by his son Patrick Barry.
Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s all-around cowboy. Precision Intermedia proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to local high school rodeo participants in the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” said McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪
