hen the rodeo rolls into Fortuna each July, the action-packed week always goes off without a hitch. But behind the scenes, the Fortuna Rodeo Board, Fire Department and Chamber of Commerce spend countless hours each year planning the celebration in the Friendly City. Fortuna is one of many stops on the California rodeo circuit, but for the community, rodeo week is an opportunity to honor Fortuna’s rural way of life.

President’s Message

I

t’s with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 95th anniversary of the Fortuna Rodeo. And yes, the Fortuna Rodeo is still alive at 95! We have a great week of activities planned with something to please everyone from 2 years old to 95 years young. The 2016 Fortuna Rodeo Grand Marshal is Mr. Bill Branstetter from Capetown. Bill is a lifelong Humboldt County rancher and a long time supporter and competitor at the Fortuna Rodeo. I believe the last time he competed in the Fortuna Rodeo he won the Cowboy Poker event. He held the winning hand and kept his seat at the table until a 2,000-pound bull called his bluff! It was some good action to say the least. The Fortuna Rodeo is a Branstetter family tradition. His father Prescott was a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board of Directors in the 1960s and served with his wife Helen, as our grand marshal in 1971. If that’s not enough, Bill’s better half, Marlyn, was the artist for our 2009 official painting. So please join me in

congratulating Bill and his family. This year’s rodeo is being dedicated to past Fortuna Rodeo Board member Will McWhorter, who passed away earlier this year. Will served with distinction for over 30 years on both the rodeo board and the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. He was a local businessman who cared about his community and contributed countless hours and resources to many worthwhile causes. It takes a community effort to put on this week-long event we call the Fortuna Rodeo. Without the cooperation and help from the City of Fortuna, Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and countless others, it just plain would not happen. Thank you to all and I hope you enjoy the 2016 Fortuna Rodeo. Happy Trails, Shannon McWhorter, President

ith plans for the Fortuna Rodeo’s 100th anniversary already percolating, the rodeo board got a jumpstart this year, naming the 2016 rodeo theme, “Still Alive at 95!” Rodeo board members remember relatives who participated over the years, earning their belt buckles in the dust and heat of summer, just like riders will this July. The way the local community rallies around the rodeo is the key to its longevity. In addition to countless volunteers and rodeo-goers, a few key local businesses have been bedrock financial supporters

that keep the rodeo thriving. Rodeo Board President Shannon McWhorter is quick to mention Bear River Casino, a Platinum Super Sponsor for the past several years. “We appreciate what they do not only for the rodeo, but the community as a whole,” says McWhorter. Lithia Chrysler Dodge of Eureka, North Coast Mercantile, Northwood Auto Plaza, Redwood Capital Bank and the Mercer-Fraser Company are Gold Sponsors, each supporting a particular night of activities. The board would like to thank all their great sponsors for keeping the rodeo “Still Alive at 95!” ✪

Shawn Griggs 2016 Poster Artist By Nora Mounce

hawn Griggs is the talented artist behind this year’s vibrant and festive rodeo guide cover. “Bones on Bulls,” a 24-by-30-inch acrylic painting, honors the way that ranching and rodeo have helped shape the culture of Fortuna. Griggs, a Humboldt County native and local surfer, was “so stoked” to be selected and share his artwork with the community in such a unique way. Raised in Ferndale, Griggs split his college years between the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Humboldt State University. After graduating with a degree in art, Griggs owned and operated a Mexican restaurant in Eureka with his wife Maggie. The artist credits his years spent creating Mexican and Latin American cuisine and traveling to the southern hemisphere to pursue his fascination with Dia de los Muer-

tos, the Mexican holiday that honors the dead. In 2007, Griggs decided to focus on his art and design full time, opening Redeye Laboratories in Ferndale. The bold color palette of Latin America and images of skeletons are incorporated into his paintings, exploring what skeletons mean to his world both visually and spiritually. In “Bones on Bulls,” the bright colors and gaunt cowboys capture both the energy of the rodeo and honor those riders who have since passed. The original painting will be auctioned off on Saturday night during the Bulls, Broncs, Bands and Brews event. Redeye Laboratories is located at 405 Main St. in Ferndale and is open most days from noon-4 p.m. Prints of “Bones on Bulls” will be available soon. Griggs loves visitors and you can call him at (707) 616-8642 to schedule a studio visit. ✪

Bill Branstetter 2016 Rodeo Grand Marshal By Nora Mounce

T

he Branstetter family had been running cattle in Humboldt County long before the first Fortuna Rodeo paraded down Main Street in 1921. Lewis Branstetter left Missouri in 1849, making the hardscrabble journey across the country and arriving in Humboldt County with a tide of eager gold miners. But Branstetter set his sights on long-term prosperity, opening a livery and ranch in Capetown, the westernmost settlement in California, southwest of Ferndale. The business has been in the family ever since, with each generation teaching the next before handing over the ropes. Today, Lewis’ grandson Bill Branstetter lives on that very same ranch, where rolling green hills dotted with grazing cattle fall away into the Pacific Ocean. After a long career as a cattle rancher and legendary local cowboy, Branstetter lives in a home he built himself with his wife of 40 years, Marlyn. For his many years with the rodeo and service to his community, the Fortuna Rodeo Association has bestowed Bill Branstetter with the honor of serving as the 95th Fortuna Rodeo Grand Marshal. “Bill’s just a great guy,” says Rodeo Board President Shannon McWhorter. Bill Branstetter, like his father Prescott, has competed in the Fortuna Rodeo regularly, taking home silver buckles in team roping and bull dogging. The Rodeo Association’s decision to ask Bill Branstetter to be grand marshal was an easy one, says McWhorter, as Bill and his wife Marlyn have been such integral members of the Fortuna and Ferndale community for so many years. Bill Branstetter has served as past president of the Humboldt County Fair, Cattlemen’s Association and Wool Growers Association. The family raised sheep as well, until about 10 years ago, when coyotes ran him out of business, says Branstetter, with a chuckle. Though responsibility for daily operations of the ranch has been passed down to his son in-law Justin Langer, Branstetter is doing his best to resist retirement. After all, he hasn’t lost his love for being in wide-open spaces, raising cattle and living alongside the wildlife. The ranchers run cattle on their properties in both Capetown and Ferndale, and Langer has recently expanded the business by leasing additional acreage. The majority of their top-quality organic, grassfed beef is snapped up by Whole Foods Market and sold throughout Northern California. While the Branstetter men have competed in rodeo for years, Marlyn Branstetter is a talented painter who created the artwork for the 2009 Fortuna Rodeo poster. She enjoys painting pastoral scenes of ranch life and has particular talent for capturing the graceful lines of livestock and cowboys. In the 2009 painting, Marlyn paid homage to Pearl Peterson, a 1930’s rodeo queen posing elegantly with her horse.

Though in retirement Branstetter keeps “just as busy as I always was,” he and the entire family will be heading to Fortuna to lead the parade this July. Branstetter’s grandkids, Prescott and Reaghan, are excited to walk alongside Grandpa Bill, and have been practicing their parade waves. Attending the Fortuna Rodeo is a family tradition for the Branstetter clan. Bill’s father, Prescott Branstetter, served as the grand marshal in 1971. Bill and Marlyn Branstetter

attend every year, and though the rodeo has grown and changed over the years, Bill says his favorite part is cheering for the local cowboys. Don’t miss your chance to wave to Bill Branstetter — one of Humboldt County’s true cowboys — and the entire Branstetter clan on Saturday, July 16th at noon at the Fortuna Rodeo parade. ✪ FORTUNA RODEO 2016

In Memory of Will McWhorter By Nora Mounce Will McWhorter Submitted

T

he Fortuna Rodeo Association and the Rodeo Board have dedicated the 95th Fortuna Rodeo to the memory of Will McWhorter. Known to family and friends as Willie, he spent most his life in Fortuna, graduating from Fortuna High School in 1965. McWhorter proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, before earning a degree in Agricultural Business Management from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1973. Returning to Humboldt County after college, McWhorter joined his father at Gates & Associates Insurance Agency, eventually taking over the reins and running the company successfully for many years. Rodeo Board President Shannon McWhorter, explained how the entire Rodeo Board voted to dedicate the 2016 Fortuna Rodeo to Will McWhorter’s memory, “to acknowledge his contribution to the community.” Close friend and fellow board member Frank Hizer remembers Will McWhorter as “one of the good old boys.” Hizer and he, along with pal Joe Toroni, spent almost 40 years on the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department together and more than 20 years on the Rodeo Board. “I got a lot good stories about Willie,” says Frank. “He had a good sense of humor but it didn’t always go over too well with other people,” Frank remembers with a chuckle.

Will McWhorter’s commitment to his community was undisputable. In addition to his service to the Volunteer Fire Department and the Rodeo Board, McWhorter was an animal lover and frequent blood donor, contributing over 12 gallons of blood in his lifetime. His favorite pastimes included golfing, hunting at the family ranch, abalone diving, fishing and, of course, a little roping and riding at the Fortuna Rodeo. McWhorter participated many times during rodeo week, competing in team roping with his father, and always cheering on the other cowboys in the arena. Will McWhorter is remembered by his partner of 10 years, Sue Machi. The couple resided on the family’s property in Shelter Cove, where Will spent the last years of life peacefully watching the waves, playing golf and running his dogs. The many members of his extended family will be in attendance at the 95th Fortuna Rodeo this year, proudly honoring his memory. “I can’t speak well enough about him,” says Frank. “He did right by people. There wasn’t anyone he wouldn’t help out.” The 2016 Fortuna Rodeo will be the first not attended by Will McWhorter in many years. In the midst of the July heat and rodeo fun, take a moment to tip your hat to a legendary Fortuna cowboy, Will McWhorter. ✪

California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association Current standings By Nora Mounce

T

he California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association (CCPRA) is the nonprofit organization responsible for the many rodeos taking place up and down the Golden State this summer. Whether you’re hankering to watch a bull riding competition or looking for a way to entertain the kiddos, the CCPRA makes sure to keep the California rodeo a safe, family-friendly event. CCPRA members are teachers, salespeople, students and barbers during most of the year, but come summer, they’re cowboys and cowgirls brought together by their love of rodeo. The Fortuna Rodeo is one of the CCPRA’s most popular destinations on the California rodeo tour and widely attended by visitors from beyond Humboldt County. As competition for silver buckles heats up, here are the CCPRA 2015 winners that will be defend-

hether you’re riding bulls or cheering from the stands, you’re going to get hungry. The Fortuna Rodeo Association, along with various community organizations, will be ready to fill your plate each day of rodeo week! MONDAY – Earn your culinary bragging rights at the Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce. Locals should be aware that Ninth to 12th streets will be closed at noon on Monday, while the teams set up and prepare their concoctions. After the chili simmers all afternoon, a public tasting begins at 5 p.m. sharp. Tasting is free (while supplies last), but bring some spending cash to purchase People’s Choice tickets and vote for the best chili in the following categories: People’s Choice, Best All-Beef, Rookie of the Year, Best Pro Chili, Best Dressed, Best Booth and Fortuna’s Best Chili. You can bet that the defending champs from 2015 will be back in action this year, so bring your best recipe if you’re ready to compete! The Chamber requests applications for participation by July 11. Call (707) 725-3959 for more info. Start the day off with a hearty pancake breakfast cooked up by the Fortuna Kiwanis Club on SATURDAY at Rohner Park. Get there at 7 a.m. sharp for the freshest pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and juice

Medicare Supplements • Life Prescription Drug Plans • Dental Plans at $6 per plate, and only $4 for kids under 12. Keep in mind those hard-earned dollars go towards the Kiwanis Club’s many community service efforts, including youth scholarships, local sports teams and literacy projects. For Humboldt county foodies, the main event at the rodeo isn’t bull riding, it’s the legendary barbecue served up on SUNDAY at 11 a.m., sponsored by Lithia Chrysler Dodge. Fortuna Rodeo board members Robb Foley and Dave Nicholson head up the rodeo barbecue committee, a responsibility they don’t take lightly as they oversee a crew of two dozen volunteers who hold highly coveted positions. The volunteers, half from the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and half from the Fortuna Volunteer Firefighters, have been fixing rodeo barbecue for nearly 25 years. Working as a well-oiled machine on Saturday, volunteers unpack the meat from the truck in the morning, roll it in white wine and a secret spice mix and get the barbecue pits in Rohner Park lit by 4 p.m. Some of the crew stays until the wee hours of the morning, tending the fires and keeping watch on the meat. Around 1 a.m., everyone finally heads home for some shuteye, before volunteers return by 6 a.m. to start the baked beans. By Sunday at 11 a.m., the crew is ready to serve around 2,000 rodeo-goers 4,000 pounds of beef, 80 gallons of potato

salad, 1,800 rolls from Ray’s Market, 100 pounds of beans and a boatload of Jell-O parfait. Proceeds from the $15 plates support beautiful Rohner Park, so eat up! ✪

Tourists Kidnapped on Friday If you’re a visitor who likes to “go local,” the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce has the experience for you! Each year during rodeo week, the chamber scours the crowd for an innocent tourist to “kidnap” for the crime of being an out-of-towner. The lucky tourist is paraded through town on Friday, culminating in a trial at high noon, where he or she will be convicted. The kidnap-ee is then sentenced to VIP treatment at weekend rodeo events, including a chauffeur, hotel vouchers and all the trappings of small town western hospitality. Sounds like a crime worth committing! This year the posse will be soliciting interested kidnapees on Facebook, so if this sounds like your idea of a good time, be sure to check out the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Fun for Kids All Week Long By Nora Mounce

J

ust when the kids are getting restless at the height of midsummer, the Fortuna Rodeo rolls into town to save the day — a week, actually — with family friendly activities to keep your lil’ cowboys and cowgirls entertained! Here’s where and when to get in on the good times: TUESDAY – Head to the Redwood Village Shopping Center at S. Fortuna Blvd. and Redwood Way from 6 to 8 p.m. for a night of free activities and fun. Tykes can jump in the bounce house provided by Lil’ Humboldt Hoppers, get their faces painted with flair by Debbi Kallish, ride horses provided by Kilby Kountry, and stop by the petting zoo courtesy of Miranda’s Rescue — all free events thanks to the Redwood Village Association. The Undercovers will keep toes tapping with like music while kids get excited about summer fitness with demonstrations by Humboldt Kenpo Karate. Kids can participate in a junior Fireman’s muster with help from the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, too. Finally, dig through the closets at home for plaid shirts, cowboy hats and mini belt buckles so your little ones can compete in a Western-themed costume contest with live music by The Undercovers

Wednesday’s penny toss on Main Street. Photo by Carol Niles Photography at 7 p.m. Register by 6:30pm. WEDNESDAY – Round up the family and stroll down to Main Street from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for street games sponsored by Fortuna Ace Hardware. The Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department hosts ol’ timey activities guaranteed to keep your kids moving. If your cowpoke wants to take home the triple-crown, he or she had better start practicing for the egg toss, penny scramble and stick horse race. A half a block away, the little ones can get their faces painted, jump in the bounce house and rope a dummy (so much safer than roping a sibling). Make sure your kids know that during the Tony Johnston penny toss, the rodeo committee and local businesses have partnered up to donate $1,000 in coins, and kids on the move can line their piggy banks for the carnival! Finally, the For-

tuna Volunteer Fire Department’s Muster/ Tech Rescue teams have dinner covered with hamburgers and hot dogs available for purchase, and the rodeo board is springing for free ice cream for the kiddos! Older kids might be holding out for the rodeo carnival, which sets up shop on Wednesday at noon, continuing everyday through Sunday. There’ll be a midway, rides and thrills a-plenty. Hop on and off the Ferris wheel over and over with an allday wristband for $25. The Junior Rodeo kicks off Wednesday at 5 p.m. This July brings the 23rd anniversary of Fortuna’s Junior Rodeo, which holds bragging rights as the largest in Northern California. By the end of Thursday, six All-Around Champion trophy saddles, 28 trophy buckles and many cash prizes will be awarded to the hard-working juniors. Several students from

Humboldt County’s high school FFA teams will be competing against other riders from the California Junior Rodeo circuit. Learn what goat tying is all about while you support our local cowboys and cowgirls! THURSDAY - Junior Rodeo continues all day, wrapping up with junior barrel racing at 7 p.m. The Fortuna Junior Rodeo is known for having the highest cash paybacks in Northern California and is a hotly contested showdown on the California Junior Rodeo circuit. SATURDAY – Don’t miss the parade! Scores of decorated floats from local schools and community organizations will be on display on Main Street starting at noon. Of course this is the rodeo, so somebody has to win — the best float entered by a Junior Civic group will win a $200 prize! ✪

Revved Up Friday night motorsports action By Nora Mounce

K

eeping things interesting, the rodeo will debut a new act on Friday night at 7 p.m. with the Diesel Truck Tug-Of-War. Diesel pulls are a traditional competition at rodeos around the country — big guns hook their trucks up to trailers, tractors and other insanely heavy things, hauling them across the ring to showcase the raw power of the diesel engines. The rodeo committee decided to give Humboldt County locals a chance at the fun and pit diesel engine against diesel engine in our own hometown throwdown. “We’re gonna hook em’ up and let ’em go,” says Brad Ponci of Ponci’s Diesel in Fortuna, the local sponsor of the event. A $50 entry fee will allow 20 trucks to participate this inaugural event, though Ponci anticipates having ½-ton, ¾-ton and 1-ton classes by next year. After trucks are matched up, the driver who pulls the other diesel across the line will move on to the final heat of 10 competitors, while the loser drives out of the arena. (See www.fortunarodeo.com for entry and details.) The grand finale will be held Friday evening as a part of Motorsports Night, along with a local favorite, the Quadiators competition — four-wheeled barrel racing and gladiator-style quad battles — and rodeo clown and motorcycle rider Troy “The Wild Child” Lerwill. ✪

odeo clown Troy Lerwill is all about getting laughs in the ring, but he takes his reputation as “The Wild Child” darn seriously. Once named the best motocross rider in his home state of Utah, Lerwill bookends his jokes with high-flying tricks that only the most skilled motorcycle riders should attempt. Lerwill started his rodeo career as a bullfighter in 1990s, incorporating more elements of comedy, rodeo and a motorcycle over the years. The son of a team roper and a rodeo queen, Lerwill was practically born into the business, but he works hard to

keeping Humboldt County’s toes tapping. Ice cold beer and bull riding round out the night at Bulls, Broncs, Bands & Brews, with beer provided by North Coast Mercantile, including Budweiser and a selection of microbrews from Eel River Brewery. In addition to bull riding, the Rodeo Board has added a fleet of bronc riders to this year’s lineup. Along with the entry fees from the riders, the rodeo board kicks in $2,000 for both the bull and bronc riding prizes. The top five riders in each event will return for the short go, and the top riders go home with a share of the prize money. This event is also great for rodeo newbies who might not be familiar with the intricacies of events like tie-down roping and barrel racing. Of course, the main rule in bull riding is simple: Hold on tight! With the addition of 15 bronc riders to this year’s show, Saturday promises to be a fine show. Sponsored by Lithia Chrysler Dodge. ✪

including original songs and classic covers. Chad Bushnell was born and raised in Red Bluff, where he grew up participating in the Junior Rodeo. He started singing and playing guitar when he was 4 years old and as a teenager sang at football games, conventions and church functions. Bushnell’s talent and love of country music has led him to opening for big names in the industry from Scotty McCreery to Billy Currington to Neal McCoy. A highlight in Bushnell’s career was traveling to Nashville and meeting legendary Teddy Gentry of Alabama, who continues to support Bushnell’s music. Bushnell’s first album You Can Drive My Truck features his low, soulful voice sounding more like a man who’s had two lifetimes of heartbreak and years on the road than a recent college graduate. In 2015, Bushnell won the Best of the North State Band award and released the single, “My Little Redneck Girl.” He looks forward to returning to Fortuna this summer and

elcome to the 95th annual Fortuna Rodeo, the centerpiece of the Friendly City’s weeklong summer celebration! Fortuna is proud to offer the largest rodeo in the region, giving cowboys up and down the state a chance to show off the skills that built the American West. In addition to competing in the individual events, which are described in the following pages, each cowboy’s individual scores are totaled together to make them eligible for three all-around cowboy prizes — the rodeo’s top honors. They are:

Bull Riding

Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling 1-ton bull, holding on with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified. Sponsor: Bear River Casino Pump and Play

Saddle Bronc Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage. Sponsor: Humboldt Fence Company

Bareback Riding Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Steer Wrestling

Team Roping

Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early.

The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” — attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Sponsor: The Playroom

Calf Roping Calf roping — also called “tiedown roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified. Sponsor: St. Joseph Hospital/ Redwood Memorial Hospital

This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The contestant then gives chase and attempts to lasso the calf’s head. She has the rope tied to her saddle horn with a string and halts her horse. Time is called when the calf, which is still running, breaks the string. Sponsor: Les Schwab Tire

Barrel Racing The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint back to the starting line. Riders are penalized five seconds if they tip over a barrel. Sponsor: Edward Jones – Hec Wood and Scott Wheeler

ach year the rodeo wraps up on Sunday with a chance to stretch your legs and get your heart pumping at the Fortuna Rodeo Fun Run. The 5K race is great opportunity to get the entire family some healthy exercise during the hoopla of rodeo week. Hosted by the Six Rivers Running Club and the Fortuna Rodeo Association, the 2016 Walk/Run requires no pre-registration. Sure, sometimes committing to a race in advance is what gets you to the starting line, but day-of registration is ideal for families scrambling to get out the door Sunday morning. Warm-up by walking down to 13th and Main streets from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. and register with just $5. The gun will go off at 9 a.m. sharp on Sunday, July 17. Youth (17 and younger) and SRRC members walk/run for free. Contact Race Director MJ Goble at msmj2u@sbcglobal. net with questions or visit www.6rrc.com for more information. ✪

Photos, top to bottom: Let the race begin! Joe Rieder, age 15, was the first racer in the 10k to cross the finish line. Kristal Mendez was the first woman to finish the 10k. For all results and more photos, visit www.6rrc.com. FORTUNA RODEO 2016

The History of the Fortuna Rodeo

Build to edge of the document Margins are just a safe area

Origins of a local tradition

T

he Fortuna Rodeo had its beginnings way back in 1921 when the Cattlemen’s Association of Humboldt County planned a picnic. It was to be an afternoon and evening affair, with “Rodeo Stunts” after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! Charles W. Moore of Ferndale was general chairman, with Frank Rolley as superintendent of the barbecue. On the general committee were H. W. McWhorter, W. N. Russ, E. N. Tooby and Fred D. Smith, with volunteer help from others. Ben Snodgrass was director of judges with William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a 25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning. …

A great tradition began in Fortuna — the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Because of that, the rodeo has a long-standing history of attracting some of the top livestock and rodeo cowboys on the West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a rip-roaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick

ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers, Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others. One year the rodeo went “long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a two-day event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make every day preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed, the show was

bigger and better than ever. In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of America and at the time became known as one of the best and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of war fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948, Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪ FORTUNA RODEO 2016

here are plenty of reasons to mount up for rodeo competition, practice for countless hours and risk injury in the dusty arena. But long after the cheering has subsided and the purse is spent, the trophies taken home by champion cowboys shine on. Here are the the storied prizes riders are shooting for at the Fortuna Rodeo.

Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Edgmon was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbecue while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. Gary was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and a giving personality. American AgCredit and Sequoia Gas Co. are proud to sponsor this award.

Fred Barry Memorial Buckle

The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle, named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore, is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County top hand. Born and raised in Humboldt County, Barry was a cowboy and rancher. He won the all-around cowboy award at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo and would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit, sponsored by his son Patrick Barry.

1137 Main St, Fortuna, CA 95540 • (707) 725-6542

Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s all-around cowboy. Precision Intermedia proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to local high school rodeo participants in the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” said McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪
