President’s Message
elcome to the 2019 Fortuna Rodeo, a tradition that keeps bringing people together year after year. We are blessed to live in a community of people and businesses that are so generous with their time and resources. The Fortuna Rodeo is dependent on hardworking volunteers and generous sponsors. Without their support, it would be impossible to put on the show. This year’s Fortuna Rodeo is dedicated to Mr. Don Brown. Don was a local State Farm Insurance agent extraordinaire and a highly respected member of our community who passed away last year. He sat on the Fortuna Rodeo Board for over 10 years and always had great ideas to make the Fortuna Rodeo bigger and better! And just like Don, the Fortuna Rodeo has been “Like A Good Neighbor For 98 Years!”
Fortuna Office (707) 725-4465 926 Main Street Fortuna, Ca 95540

His community involvement is impressive, with stints on many local boards and organizations. Congratulations to Walt and his wonderful family! We have a week packed full of activities for you and your family to enjoy and participate in. We hope you can join us in sunny Fortuna July 14th through the 21st to enjoy the tradition of the Fortuna Rodeo! Happy trails, Shannon McWhorter President

T
he theme of the 98th annual Fortuna Rodeo is “Like A Good Neighbor,” in honor of State Farm Insurance Agent and Fortuna icon Don Brown. This year’s festivities are dedicated to Brown and his many years of hard work and volunteering both in the community at large and with the rodeo specifically. Brown opened his second State Farm Agency in January of 1998 in Fortuna after moving his family here from Houston, Texas. He was an active community member in Fortuna and served on the rodeo board of directors for many years. He was also active on the Redwood Memorial Hospital Foundation Board, the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce Board and the Fortuna Elementary School Board. In 2006 he was recognized as the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.
Brown was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010 and died eight years later in September of 2018. And so this year the rodeo board pays homage to Brown and the indelible mark he left on the community and the rodeo. His son Bradley Brown said his father loved Fortuna and the people who live there. He helped launch the Quadiator event on Friday nights, always participated in the parade and competed in the Chili Cook-off every year — even winning People’s Choice a couple times. Bradley said his dad loved meeting and talking to people and giving back to the community. “My dad was raised in Texas and always considered himself a Texan,” Bradley said. “But Fortuna was his home — he was happy here.” ✪

Grand Marshal Walt Giacomini By Megan Bender
W
hen the sun comes out in Humboldt County, the Friendly City of Fortuna brings out its saddles. The 2019 Fortuna Rodeo week is fast approaching and the town is all hustle and bustle preparing for arguably its biggest event of the year. This year’s rodeo parade will be led by a familiar Fortuna face, rancher and retired cowboy Walt Giacomini. Giacomini was born and raised on a ranch. He grew up south of Eureka in Elk River. After college, his ranching career took him to Salmon Creek, Bear River and Ocean House. He worked alongside his dad, spent time at a research farm and even taught high school and coached rodeo in Oregon. He returned to Humboldt County in 1980
Walt Giacomini ridin’ and ropin’ in the 1975 Fortuna Rodeo. fortunarodeo.com
to run a ranch he had once worked at, Andy McBride’s ranching operation. “You learn a lot working on a ranch,” Giacomini said. “You develop a respect for the land, livestock and wildlife, and those kinds of things are a big part of our lives.” Giacomini and his wife, Becky, have passed on responsibility to their oldest daughter and her husband. He said his grandkids help out on the ranch but haven’t shown the same interest in rodeo that he had growing up. Giacomini has been a part of the Fortuna Rodeo for 54 years. He hung up his rodeo saddle during his last competition in 2014, at the spry age of 75. “The highlight of my career would be in
1981 — I won the saddle in the rodeo,” he said. “I didn’t close several times prior to that and that’s gotta be the fondest memory I have. I’ve had quite a bit of success but that was the biggest feat for me.” To qualify for the All-around Saddle, you have to place or win money in two or more events. “It’s the equivalent of the MVP award for the rodeo. It’s a way of designating whoever had the best weekend of the entire rodeo,” he said. Now, five years after he last participated in the rodeo, Giacomini said it is a tremendous honor to serve as grand
marshal to such a unique rodeo. Giacomini said he has finished in the top 15 in the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association calf roping standings five times, qualifying for year-end finals. He also competed in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for several years, including rodeos at Pendleton, Salinas and Cheyenne. So when you see Grand Marshal Giacomini riding by at the Fortuna Rodeo, know you’ll be looking at a local legend. ✪

he California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association (CCPRA) is the nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping rodeo a safe, family-friendly event. The Fortuna Rodeo is widely known as one of CCPRA’s most popular rodeos on the California circuit. Visitors from all over the western states trek to Humboldt County to enjoy the pleasantly mild weather and authentic rodeo culture of Fortuna. As competition for the 2019 buckles heats up, here are the 2018 CCPRA winners who defend their titles this July in Fortuna. Aside from the glory of taking home a silver saddle (and winning big money), these hotshots will put their raw talent and bravery on display in every competition in Fortuna — it’s the rodeo way.

Fortuna’s Famous Food
Hungry?
By Megan Bender
Y
ou can’t have a good rodeo without good cookin’ and good eatin’. Don’t miss out on the biggest chili cook-off of the year, a hearty breakfast and Fortuna’s famous barbecue. Here’s a look at the rodeo week to guide you to your food favorites. This year you’ll also find food trucks rolling in throughout the rodeo grounds. Be on the lookout for the colorful Humboldt Fresh and Pineapple Express trucks. Pineapple Express features authentic Hawaiian dishes and shaved ice, while Humboldt Fresh serves up classic American fare, like burgers and fries, with locally sourced ingredients. All other concessions are hosted by nonprofits and proceeds go back into the community. Monday, July 15 – Grab your buddies, prepare your taste buds and get ready for the Chili Cook-off. Competing teams bring their deepest pots and finest secret ingredients to create what they hope will be named “Fortuna’s Best Chili.” If you want to get your hands on some fingerlicking-good chili, get to Main Street at 5 p.m. Taste testing is free while supplies last. When you think you’ve found the perfect chili, make sure you vote by buying People’s Choice tickets available on site at the Fortuna Chamber tables. The first 20 teams receive 5 pounds each of
graciously donated Humboldt Grassfed beef for signing up first. Last year 25 teams signed up so if you want to toss your chef’s hat into the ring, it’s not too late. Application forms and a $25 entry fee are accepted at the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce until 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. The best of the best to beat from last year are: Best Beef Chili: Recology Rookie of the Year: Body Works Fitness Club Hottest Chili: Beacom Construction Co. Best Professional Chili: Shamus T Bones People’s Choice: SmoKen BBQ Fortuna’s Best Chili: Tri Counties Bank Competing teams must prepare to serve chili for at least 800 people but keep in mind samples go fast. Don’t miss the biggest chili cook-off around. Off-site preparation is allowed — so long as it’s in a commercial kitchen — and teams can only begin mixing their special recipes at noon. The Fortuna Chamber of Commerce is adding a barbecue raffle giveaway to the lineup this year. Tickets are $10 each or 13 tickets for $100, and are on sale now

early and there’s always plenty of breakfast to go around. Sunday morning – What’s traditional rodeo without traditional barbecue? Feast your eyes and stomachs on the long night’s work of the Fortuna Rodeo Board Barbecue Committee. Shannon McWhorter said last year the barbecue fed 2,000 to 2,500 people, but no one goes away hungry. From Saturday morning to Sunday, they’ll have unpacked, prepped and cooked 4,000 pounds of beef, 80 gallons of potato salad, 1,800 rolls and 80 to 100 gallons of beans. Beef is unpacked on Saturday morning to be rolled in white wine, then coated in a secret rodeo barbecue mix. The crew lights the Rohner Park pit fires and keeps them burning to roast the meat until 1 a.m. Sunday morning. By 11 a.m., hungry patrons can enjoy the biggest and best barbecue Fortuna has to offer for $15 a plate. ✪

hat better way to keep the kids busy during rodeo week than paintball, face painting, a carnival, the junior rodeo
and more? On Tuesday, head to the Redwood Village Shopping Center at 6 p.m. for Humboldt Paintball, a petting zoo, a bounce house and other free activities
like HealthSPORT demonstrations and sidewalk chalk. Event favorites like the cake walk and rock painting are coming back this year, as well as the Fortuna Fire Department hosting its annual mini-muster. New this year is Humboldt Paintball, which will have a set-up for the older kids to have some fun. Vendors will be selling cotton candy, snowcones and popcorn for kids of all ages (including kids at heart) and most of the activities are free. Cowgirls and cowboys under 12-years-old should bring their best duds to compete in the Western Costume Contest at 7 p.m. Registration for the contest begins at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday and Thursday, don’t miss one of the largest junior rodeos in Northern California. Admission is free for the 26th annual Junior Rodeo and
events start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Junior cowgirls and cowboys come from as far away as New Jersey to participate in rodeo classic events like team roping, barrel racing and goat tying. Along with prize money, head of the Junior Rodeo Committee Kris Williamson said this year it’s giving away six saddles and 30 trophy buckles. Kids can receive awards down to sixth place. Per tradition, $500 has been added to the jackpot for this year’s junior rodeo. After watching the junior rodeo, head over to Main Street from 5:30 to 8 p.m., where the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department hosts another night of family fun. The kiddos can compete in stick horse races, jump in a bounce house and take home pocket change in the annual Tony
Johnston Penny Scramble. Dine on hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by the Eel River Valley Technical Rescue Team and you’ll support its annual fundraiser. And in case snow cones weren’t exciting enough, the Fortuna Rodeo Board will hand out free ice cream. The Fortuna Rodeo Carnival has a soft opening on Tuesday night, July 16. The carnival will stay open from noon to 11 p.m. through Thursday. Over the weekend, the rides will be spinning from noon to midnight. All-day wristbands are available for $35. On Saturday, watch Fortuna rodeo icon and Grand Marshal Walt Giacommini lead the cars, horses and floats in the annual parade starting at Main Street. Get ready to catch some candy, kids! ✪

Bull Riding Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling 1-ton bull, holding on with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified. Photo by Carol Niles Photography

Saddle Bronc Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage.

Bareback Riding Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must make the doctors names like old ad, not so big andon notfor all capitalized, main to focus should stay eight seconds bequalify north coast logo and good luck to all for vet a score. participants

Steer Wrestling
Photos by Carol Niles Photography
Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early. Sponsor: Wyckoff’s Plumbing

Calf Roping Calf roping — also called “tiedown roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified. Sponsor: St. Joseph Hospital/ Redwood Memorial Hospital

Team Roping
The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” — attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Breakaway Roping This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The contestant then gives chase and attempts to lasso the calf’s head. She has the rope tied to her saddle horn with a string and halts her horse. Time is called when the calf, which is still running, breaks the string. Sponsor: Eel River Brewing Co.

BEACOM CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint back to the starting line. Riders are penalized five seconds if they tip over a barrel.

ut on your racing boots and get to the starting line. It’s time to kick off the 98th annual Fortuna Rodeo week with the 2019 Fun Run. This Unites States Track and Field certified 5K race is hosted by the Six Rivers Running Club and is one of the flattest and straightest SRRC races around our part of the Pacific Northwest. Race director Juan Reyes said this means participants can expect to clock faster times and that the track is great for beginners.
SRRC members, runners under the age of 18 and high school students run free, and general racers only need $5 to sign up. The race starts at 9 a.m. but participating runners should arrive 30 minutes early to the Redwood Café parking lot at 12th and Main streets, where the race will start and end. Racers to beat are Tami Beall, who last year lead the women’s group clocking in at 19:46, and Jasper Severn, who finished first in the men’s, clocking in at 17:52 at the 2018 race. ✪

The History of the Fortuna Rodeo By Alex Service & Susan O’Hara
I
n 1921, the recently formed Humboldt Stockmen’s Association decided its annual picnic in Fortuna would include a rodeo to provide entertainment for the stockmen and their families. From this beginning, the Fortuna Rodeo has grown and changed with the times but remains the focal point for summer entertainment in the Eel River Valley. The roots of the rodeo lie in both the stockmen’s history of raising cattle to feed the various timber company crews and in the everyday transportation by horse that was gradually being replaced by automobiles. The rodeo also harkened back to a romanticized version of the Old West promoted in Wild West shows by entertainers like Buffalo Bill Cody. Cattle-based industries have a rich history in Humboldt County. One of the first cattle drives in Humboldt was in 1852, when Joseph Russ brought a herd to Bear River Ridge where he started his ranch. Those cattle fed the many lumber company crews in the county. The rich delta farmlands of the valley also became the sites of many dairies. In 1915, the Humboldt Stockmen’s Asso-

ciation formed to help improve the quality of stock raised by the ranchers. Further goals of the association were to provide protection for their animals and prevent stock being stolen. The Stockmen’s Association became very popular and 300 people attended its picnic and rodeo in 1921. Some of the association’s charter members were Tim Barry, Henry Devoy, Fred Hinkley, Stanley Hunt, Dr. J.W. Logan, Ted Lytle, Jack McClelland, Harry McWhorter, Charles Moore, Doug Prior, Rupert Porter, Joe Russ, William Russ, Fred Smith, Ben Snodgrass, Glen Timmons and Jack Tamboury. The 1921 picnic and rodeo was not the first rodeo-type event held in the valley. In 1912, Jess Stahl, an African American from Ferndale, held a rough riding demonstration at the Rohnerville Fairgrounds, riding “outlaw” horses famed for being difficult to ride. Stahl was destined to become recognized in the Cowboy Hall of Fame for his exploits as a bronco rider and rodeo participant. At the 1919 Humboldt County Fair, the Oakland Tribune reported “Seaman John Kelly of the destroyer Boggs carried off the honors of the wild west show of the Humboldt County Fair here

by riding an outlaw bronco to a standstill.” During the 1910s several “rough riding festivals” were held in the valley. Most people during that time used horses for transportation and appreciated the skill necessary to ride an untamed one. None of these events were held annually and it was not until the Stockmen’s event of 1921 that a formal rodeo was held in Humboldt County. Rodeos were becoming popular in California in the late 1910s, with events held in Salinas beginning in 1911 and in Hayward, Willits and Red Bluff in 1921. The Fortuna event quickly became popular both on the rodeo circuit and with local residents. Many planned to come to Fortuna to see the parade, the rodeo and to dance. By 1925 the rodeo had become a three-day event, with dancing Friday and Saturday nights. In addition to the regular rodeo events, there was horse racing on the newly built racetrack around the arena. It was also a “must” for politicians of the era to stop by the rodeo to visit with their constituents. The Redwood Rodeo, as it became known, was only one of the attractions of that weekend. The parade became a part of the rodeo by 1927, when it was billed as a “historical pioneer pageant.” One of the parade participants that year was William Sofer, dressed as a Spanish Californian padre driving an old-time ox team. The organizers of the rodeo have always kept in mind that the rodeo is both a participant and a spectator event. One of the at-
tractions of the 1938 rodeo was 2-year-old “Baby Lee Persico and his pony Buck.” The two put on a riding demonstration that was very popular with the audience. From 1942 through 1945, during World War II, there was no rodeo. It resumed in 1946, with more than $3,400 in prize money for the contestants. The rodeo events were limited to two days, a tradition that has continued. The 1940s also saw the institution of a Rodeo Queen. In 1948, for example, the Rodeo Queen was Stella James, outfitted in western attire courtesy of the rodeo directors. The 1950s saw additions to the festivities, like the pancake breakfast and carnival. A pit barbecue dinner also became part of the event in the 1950s. Over the decades, other highlights, such as the firemen’s events, chili cook-off and quad riders, have been added. The core of the event remains the celebration of the Old West, our local history and Fortuna. With the parade, dances, pancake breakfast and barbecue, the rodeo has become a celebration of Fortuna and the people who live here. The Stockmen’s Association continued to host the event until the late 1920s, when the rodeo was organized and operated by the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and the Fortuna Fire Department, and the Rodeo Association, formed in 1952. Today the Fortuna Rodeo continues its legacy as a beloved annual celebration that gives back to its community. ✪

here are plenty of reasons to mount up for rodeo competition, practice for countless hours and risk injury in the dusty arena. But long after the cheering has subsided and the purse is spent, the trophies taken home by champion cowboys shine on. Here are the the storied prizes riders are shooting for at the Fortuna Rodeo.
Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Edgmon was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbecue while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. He was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and giving personality. American AgCredit and Sequoia Gas Co. are proud to sponsor this award.
Fred Barry Memorial Buckle The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle, named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore, is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County top hand. Born and raised in Humboldt County, Barry was a cowboy and rancher. He won the all-around cowboy award at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo and would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The

Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s all-around cowboy. Mobley Construction proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to local high school rodeo participants in the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” said McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪ FORTUNA RODEO 2019

hile this year’s organizers, bronc riders and food vendors have been preparing for Fortuna’s biggest annual event, historians Susan O’ Hara and Alexandra Service have been gathering highlights and surprises to commemorate the rich 100-year history of the Fortuna Rodeo. The pair has been elbow-deep in documents, photos and ephemera, but they’re not done yet. The book will be published for the 100th annual Fortuna Rodeo in 2021. O’Hara and Service want you to join them at the Depot Museum in Rohner Park on July 14 at 7 p.m. for a slideshow presentation and talk to learn about the rich history they’ve compiled.
“A few of the highlights that I’m sure we’re likely to be mentioning are: Jesse Stahl and Ty Stokes, early African American rodeo stars who performed in the Fortuna Rodeo; Frederick Jagel, the Metropolitan Opera tenor who was the featured entertainer at the 1930 rodeo; and the 1928 Redwood Indian Marathon, in which the Fortuna Rodeo sponsored one of the runners,” Service said. You can contribute to this community project, too. O’Hara and Service ask that you bring whatever pieces of rodeo history you have, be it a story or photo to be added to their findings and possibly the book. ✪
