As the season comes to a close and the new season is around the corner, we curated a series of talks that promise to result in very beneficial, relevant and timely conversations. Our intention is to support community and economic development through connection, collaboration and an overall unmasking of the industry together.

Opening Speaker: The Rise of Light Deprivation 11 AM - The California cannabis indus-

try has undergone an incredible amount of change and advancement within the last three years alone and part of that shift has been the increased adoption of the light deprivation method to cultivating ERIC cannabis. Eric is a licensed contractor and has managed Forever Flowering Greenhouses (lightdep.com) since 2007. He grew up on a commercial farm that’s been registered with the state since 1863. After briefly living in Humboldt, Eric planted roots in Grass Valley, California.

Mike Black

created Humboldt Rain in 2015. Mike and his lovely wife set down their roots where the Redwoods meet the Sea, in Humboldt County, where they feel blessed to operate a small family farm.

Eric Brandstad has

been managing Forever Flowering Greenhouses since 2007. In addition, he is an earthwork and paving Licensed Contractor. Originally from San Joaquin County, California, his family has been commercially farming since 1862. He originally executed site development for greenhouse facilities prior to working for FFG. Eric moved to Grass Valley in 2001, where he started a small organic farm with his wife Bridget. Together they grew wheatgrass for the local co-op and now have a small goji berry nursery in a cold frame greenhouse.

Since starting with FFG in 2007 Eric has been actively working on under-

standing how summer greenhouses operate efficiently. He has toured many greenhouse facilities over the years to gain a better understanding of how plants react in greenhouse environments. Eric also speaks about Light Deprivation technology which was pioneered by FFG in 2006.

Eric Brandstad’s expertise in Light Deprivation Greenhouse technology has made him a popular speaker at many events including The Emerald Cup, Santa Cruz Cup, Golden Tarp Awards, The Cali Dep Fest, Humboldt High Grade Gala, Canna Con, Cultivation Classic, Cannabis Creative Conference, National Cannabis Industry Association, Imperious Expo, Cannabis World Congress and Business Exposition and many others.

Eric’s goal is to help improve the efficiency of light deprivation greenhouses and to help educate growers on how plants react in the greenhouse environment.

in order to become compliant with cannabis regulations. She is dedicated to being a positive ambassador for Humboldt County, as well as helping farmers preserve their heritage in a new economic reality.

She has a bachelor’s in Environmental Science with a minor in Economics from Humboldt State University, and previously served as the Assistant Executive Director of the advocacy and education group California Cannabis Voice Humboldt (CCVH). During her tenure, she was involved in organizing factfinding tours for the California Board of Equalization, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, the Blue Ribbon Commission, Representative Jared Huffman and Assemblymember Jim Wood; as well as many other experiences to show the world that what Humboldt has is truly special.

Dr. Dominic Corva is a Po-

litical Geographer and Public Policy scholar. He was most recently a visiting assistant professor in Public Policy at Sarah Lawrence College (2009-2013), and continues to be an Affiliate Researcher for the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research (HIIMR) at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California. His work has been published in The International Journal of Drug Policy, Political Geography, the Annals of the Association of American Geographers, and ACME: A Journal of Radical Geography. His dissertation research

examined the political economy of international drug policy in the Western Hemisphere, and his postdoctoral research has focused on the political economy of cannabis agriculture in Southern Humboldt county.

Jesse Dodd is a gardener, beeder, artist and living soil builder. He specializes in multifaceted composting strategies, utilizing appropriate biology, based on location and materials in an attempt to optimize the process. His hope is to instill in others how important living soils are to our life on this planet and the need to return our organic wastes back into the natural cycles.

He is the creator of Biovortex, a living conceptual art piece, utilizing the mediums of gardening, soil building, breeding, photography, writing, imagination, social media, conversations, and presentations, with the goal of influencing the cannabis industry in the direction of a profitable and environmentally regenerative future. It’s his belief that through the development of regenerative cannabis farms we can create tremendous economic growth and opportunity, while having a positive impact on the environment.

Hollie Hall is a watershed resources specialist living in Northern California. Following the principals

of Adaptive Management, she works to integrate social values, science, and regulatory processes to shape watershed resources management strategies. In October of 2013 she opened a watershed resources consultancy to aid community groups, landowners, nonprofit organizations, and state and federal agencies in developing watershed resource management solutions. Ideal outcomes of Hollie’s work are improved watershed health through: stakeholder collaboration, an overall increase in the watershed literacy of society, and an enhancement in the scientific and social value base of environmental policies.

Kevin Jodrey

is one of the most well known growers in Humboldt County and is an internationally respected cannabis expert, known for improving and forwarding the modern cannabis movement. As a world renowned hunter of ganja genetics, Kev is fascinated by the search for rare, desirable, and marketable traits.

Kevin is the creator of Port Royal, owner of Wonderland Nursery, and co-founder of The Ganjier. He’s been a cannabis cultivator for decades, running this own operations and offering consulting services to the broader community. He’s spoken at universities, judged at the Emerald Cup, and consulted on cannabis related educational shows for National Geographic and A&E. Featured in the New York Times, a pulitzer prize winning Washing Post article, count-

less other articles, books, and radio and tv shows, he is at the epicenter of the Green Rush (and graces the walls of the Oakland Museum to prove it) and is guiding the industry as it transitions to the Clean Rush – the sustainable movement of regenerating the land naturally through cannabis cultivation.

Fred Krissman ’s

research & teaching focus includes: international migration, farm labor markets, agricultural systems, illegal commodities (undocumented labor and cannabis), socioeconomic inequalities, cultural and subcultural interactions.

Fiona Ma was first elected to represent the people of California’s 12th Assembly District from November 2006 to November 2012 (after serving the maximum of three terms.) She was the #112th woman to ever be elected to the California Legislature and the first Asian woman to ever serve as Speaker pro Tempore since 1850. The 12th Assembly District represented 450,000 and included the cities of San Francisco, Daly City, Colma and Broadmoor.

Assemblywoman Ma first became interested in politics as a small business owner and a Certified Public Accountant advocating on behalf of other small businesses. She was an elected delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business under President Bill Clinton, which produced a report to Congress on the 60 top policy recommendations to help small businesses grow and prosper in the 21st century.

She formally entered the field of politics in 1995, serving as a part-time district representative for the former President pro Tempore of the California Senate, John Burton. It was a position that would last for seven years, after which she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where she served for four years until 2006.

During her tenure on the Board of Supervisors, she authored the landmark Local Business Enterprise ordinance on behalf of women and minority business owners and passed legislation to tackle human trafficking.

Dan Mar is the

owner of High Tide Permaculture, a regenerative land-use design company specializing in holistic property management plans, rainwater systems and watershed restoration. He is the founder of the Watershed Conscious Property program, a retired high school science teacher, and an instructor for permaculture design courses.

Samantha Miller is

President and Chief Scientist at Pure Analytics, LLC – a cannabis testing lab based in northern california. In addition to her work at Pure Analytics, Samantha is an instructor at the 707 Cannabis College.

Graduating cum laude, Samantha received her B.S. in Biochemistry. In turn, she was awarded scholarships and fellowships with the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and The Beckman Foundation for research in pro-drug discovery.

Samantha has more than 15 years experience in analytical chemistry.

Her particular focuses include drug development, environmental analysis, materials chemistry and more. Not only can Samantha use the necessary equipment to analyze chemical compounds in cannabis, but she can build them as well.

Sarah Schuette ,

Associate Professional Soil Scientist, is co-founder of Dirty Business Soil which has been gaining momentum for the past 4 years. She has over 7 years of professional experience as a Soil Scientist and Biological Technician. Sarah helped build the DBS laboratory to what it is today. She is dedicated to helping farmers grow healthy, sustainable crops

using cutting edge regenerative practices. As a mathematician and chemist, she specializes in developing custom recipes for farmers based on the results of their soil tests. Prior to starting DBS she worked for government agencies such as NRCS, National Parks and The US Forest Service mapping soil and plant communities in Oregon and Alaska as well as soil conservation projects in Minnesota.

Shane Young ’s background in Plant Health and Propagation was solidified during seven years managing the ornamental greenhouses at Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas, a Greenhouse Growers magazine top 25 grower. After personally implementing and running a successful biological control program there, he chose to switch gears and bring his expertise to the cannabis industry to help producers reduce residual pesticides in medical cannabis.

The focus of Natural Enemies is strictly on the use of beneficial insects and helping growers transition from chemical use to biological control.

As founder of Natural Enemies, and a thought leader in the new cannabis industry, Shane spreads the message of chemical pesticide-free horticulture through commercial cannabis consulting and speaking at cannabis conventions.

Shane is a husband and father and lives in Portland, OR.

JUDGING How Judging Works

The Judging Process (Off Site)

1. There will be four tables, one for each of the categories Floral, Fuel, Earth, Fruity. Each table will have the top four entries that lab results confirmed have the highest cannabinoids in that category.

2. Judges will go to an exclusive Judge’s Hall off­site to judge the top 16 entries. They will rate each one with a scorecard.

3. Each entry will be numbered and anonymized so they may be judged fairly.

4. Judging ends at 4 pm.

5. The entry with the highest score will be awarded the Golden Tarp Award at the evening award ceremony.

What are the Cannabis Categories?

Cultivators entered strains into one of four categories they think best suits their strain: 1. Floral. examples: Blue Dream, Green Crack, Bubba’s Gift 2. Fuel. examples: OG, Chem Dog 3. Earth. examples: Bubba, Pure Kush, Hindu Kush 4. Fruity. examples: Agent Orange, Mendo Purp Becoming a Judge

Anyone with a ticket and a 215 recommendation has a chance to become a judge. When patients enter the event, they have the option to roll a lottery machine. If the golden ball comes up, that person is granted a Judge Pass. Judge Passes may also be handed out on an individual basis. Just keep in mind: Only patients with verified 215 recommendations are eligible to become a judge. Judgeships are non­transferable.

FINN GRUVA - Finn a.k.a Groove Operator (born Haifine Latapu) was raised in South Sacramento, CA. The first genre of music he ever heard was old Tongan folk music from his parents. He also grew up listening to R&B, Old School, and Soft Rock music–even before Reggae music. It wasn’t until junior high school that he was exposed to Reggae music through church dances and activities.

Dylan Livingearth is the owner of

His specialty is working collaborative with community stakeholders to support their vision to fruition.
