LIVE PAINTING has become a staple of Humboldt County festivals — both cannabis-related and otherwise — in recent years. Reggae on the River, Northern Nights and Cannifest, among a variety of others, have all featured live art. In fact, live painting seems perfectly suited to the festival scene. And why not? Executing a painting from start to finish “live” in front of an audience demands qualities such as spontaneity, freedom from inhibitions and the ability to act fluidly in the moment — all of which are characteristics that music festivals and, of course, cannabis elicit. Yet, “every artist doing it seems to have a totally different take and trip,” according to Humboldt-based Matt Beard, who paints the surf up and down the California coast and has developed a busy sideline painting live. THE ORIGINS OF WHAT are known as Humboldt County weed strains are, at times, shrouded in mystery. For many years, the cannabis culture of this region was famous but not exactly legal. This, according to Matt Kurth, the founder of Humboldt Cannabis Tours, is why a lot of the strain origins are difficult to pinpoint. Over the course of 60-plus years, cannabis culture has been passed down, shared and often times hidden in plain sight among the coastal redwood trees and farms. Much of that history started with the “back to the land” movement, where hundreds opted for simpler lives away from the bustling cities and moved into the secluded forests. That’s where Kurth starts his tour — in the late 1960s. “1968 was a hard year.” In politics, law enforcement and society at large, there was instability and violence. That’s when, according to Kurth, people started moving to areas like Santa Cruz, Mendocino, the Sierras and eventually farther north to Humboldt County. “There’s not a lot of history books about this,” Kurth said. “I talked to one woman who moved up here with $70 in her pocket. And she had three kids. So, they were poor.” Kurth noted that the land up in the Emerald Triangle region, particularly Humboldt, was cheap because previous logging companies stripped the land. While tensions were high in the industrial world of the city, life behind the Redwood Curtain stayed slightly calmer. Along with less regulation than urban areas, growing weed was doable. People would plant their regular squash, tomatoes and basil — and they’d also plant a patch of cannabis. “They planted weed with their garden. Not to make money, just to have weed to smoke. It was another vegetable in the garden. It was medicine. A lot of them were also healing from trauma, like from the war, the protests,” Kurth said. “The weed wasn’t very good at first. Most of the seeds were from across the border in Mexico and Colombia or from the veterans who brought seeds from Southeast Asia.” Cannabis, however, is relatively easy to grow and Kurth said the back-to-thelanders eventually grew enough marijuana to sell, not exactly to get rich but to survive. When survival turned into a small profit, most growers took vacations. Jamaica was one spot where travel was also business. There, growers learned more about their product and adopted the practice of sensemillia. This involves pulling out the male plants from the groups, which prevents the fertilization of the female plants, thus producing flowers with higher THC content. Afterward, other growers traveled to Afghanistan, which has what Kurth calls an “amazing, old hash culture — the end of the Hippie trail.” The seeds brought back to the United States were the first indica seeds. Growers then started combining the indica seeds from the Middle East with the sativa seeds from the Mexican border and Southeast Asia. By the end of the 1970s, new strains were emerging everywhere and Humboldt County growers had found their niche. According to Kurth, “This happened all over the United States but Humboldt was the center of it. … That’s when they got the first really good strains. The first really good hybrids.”

Trainwreck (Arcata Trainwreck) While we could not pinpoint its creator, a seminal Humboldt strain (also known as a varietal) is Trainwreck. Derived of Thai, Mexican and Afghani plants, Trainwreck is a staple in Humboldt County and arguably in the entire state of California. Matt Smith-Caggiano is the founder of Arcata’s newly opened Emerald Genetics, a small center that’s saving HUMBOLDT CANNABIS

HISTORY + CULTURE

and collecting seeds to make new marijuana strains. Right now, Smith-Caggiano says they’re looking to create 10 to 15 new Humboldt strains. Smith-Caggiano carried with him a small cooler, which stores a plastic bag of Trainwreck seeds labeled with a date of 2005. “Seeds can last for several years if they’re stored in the right type of environment,” he said. “Trainwreck is, to my knowledge, one of the most original Humboldt-bred strains. There’s genetics that have come from all over the world. You know it’s not native, there’s nothing native. It all has to be brought from somewhere,” Smith-Caggiano said. However, Trainwreck originally thrived in Humboldt County, he said, and later became iconic as a particularly potent and chaotically growing plant. The aromatic and pungent smell of Trainwreck’s unique terpene profile also makes it memorable. Thrillist identifies it as a plant with a smell that lingers in the mouth and sinuses for what seems like an eternity. “There’s theories that Trainwreck’s natural piney and lemony smell actually works as a natural insecticide. From my knowledge, it’s not as prone to pests and maybe less prone to powdery mildew,” he said. Trainwreck’s effects are high-impact and high-energy. It offers a euphoric and energetic high, although it packs a strong punch that eventually leads to relaxation, introspection and sometimes sleepiness, according to Marijuana Break. Trainwreck is commonly used to treat migraines, body pain and even anxiety.

Purple Panty Dropper (aka Purple Passion) The origin of this strain’s name, according to Humboldt Seed Company’s Nathaniel Pennington, is a little embarrassing but Purple Panty Dropper has ultimately outlived the trend of its circa 2005 politically incorrect name. “I struggle with the name but we created it years ago and it became very popular,” Pennington said. “I was much younger and there was a party at a friend’s house.” It turns out that the younger Pennington took a stroll the morning after the party and found a pair of discarded purple undergarments near a purple colored cannabis plant. “They just so happened to be sitting right next to each other and that’s when it dawned on me,” he said. Pennington further stated the plant smelled like orange blossoms and was pleasant to behold. “It tends to be sweet, fruity and uplifting. It gives one an energizing high.” Purple Panty Dropper is described as an indica dominant varietal and is a cross between three strains including Purple Haze, Oregon Grape and Matanuskan Mist. According to Humboldt Seed Company, the strain produces an almost grape-like scent and supposedly aphrodisiac smoke. Its description also adds that all panties must be dropped consensually.

To be continued... This is merely a scratch on the surface of original Humboldt County strains, which have and will continue to withstand the test of time. The mountain air mixed with the ever-present ocean mist has captivated growers and proven to be ideal conditions for cultivation. The terroir of Humboldt’s native microflora, higher elevation, majestic redwood trees and microclimates ultimately distinguish Humboldt County cannabis from the rest of the world. AS A PRIZE FOR enduring the tedium of the long drive up U.S. Highway 101, Humboldt County visitors are treated to empty beaches and redwood groves that brush the stars. While Humboldt and cannabis have long been known synonymously, cannabis has always been a bit removed from the tourist experience. A culture unto itself, visitors staying in the bucolic Victorian town of Ferndale or bohemian Arcata have never had access to “the hill,” as locals say. Until now. “Humboldt is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” says Desiree Senese-Robinson, owner of Riverbar Pharms, the county’s first official bud and breakfast. “There’s never traffic, there’s never crowds,” adds Senese-Robinson. “It’s incredible.” Meeting Senese-Robinson at her newly opened Riverbar Pharms on sunny fall morning, I follow the local UPS truck down Riverbar Road off of State Route 36. Set

Pharms amid a pastoral valley striped by the Van Duzen River flowing west, Riverbar Pharms is surrounded by apple trees and neighboring cows. A green-trimmed, two-story gingerbread farmhouse originally built in 1904, the property has a history of welcoming guests; it was operated as a traditional bed and breakfast for more than 10 years. After purchasing the property in 2017, Senese-Robinson’s husband, Bryan Robinson, deftly navigated licensing applications — Humboldt County passed the first cannabis land use ordinance in the state — and was successfully awarded cultivation permits. A veteran cannabis farmer from Southern Humboldt, Robinson plans on eventually growing up to 90,000 square feet of mixed-light cultivation at Riverbar. The

leafy green plants and the symbolic rows of Humboldt greenhouses will be openly integrated into the surrounding landscape of the farm. “We want to bring an upscale experience to the cannabis industry,” explains Senese-Robinson, an Orange County native and graduate of the California Culinary Academy. After marrying her husband four years ago, Senese-Robinson jumped at the opportunity to move north, bringing her love of farm-to-table cuisine, a natural flair for hospitality and the couple’s two young children. Quickly making herself at home in Humboldt, Senese-Robinson’s favorite activity is hitting the farmers market for local produce to cook up at Riverbar. “I know people don’t want Humboldt to feel like Southern CaliHUMBOLDT CANNABIS

fornia,” says Senese-Robinson. “And I get it!” After officially opening to guests in July, Riverbar Pharms has retained Humboldt County’s unpresuming beauty and laidback style of hospitality. Entering the stately Victorian farmhouse, a comfy lounge welcomes travelers to relax with a book, a glass of wine and whatever else a cannabis-friendly tourist might enjoy. While under 2018 regulations, Riverbar Pharms cannot — and does not — sell or give any cannabis products to their guests. Instead, it regularly calls on EcoCann Dispensary in Eureka for deliveries. Travelers can peruse EcoCann’s menu online and Senese-Robinson will arrange to have their cannabis products of choice waiting on arrival — quite the upgrade from a mint on your pillow. As a busy mom, Senese-Robinson identifies with the casual cannabis consumer — she rarely drinks but finds that on her off hours, cannabis helps relieve the stress of managing a bed and breakfast and raising two small children. She knows she’s not the only one. Riverbar Pharms offers cannabis tourists the room — literally and figuratively — to enjoy cannabis without stigma or risk. While a licensed bed and breakfast, Riverbar retains its autonomy as private property, a key legal distinction that allows guests to consume cannabis on-site. Despite many tourist operators’ desire to be cannabis friendly, California hotels and lodges cannot afford their guests the same freedoms. Leveraging this unique status, Riverbar’s long-term plans include a smoking patio, a tasting room for estate-grown flowers and renovating the barn into a cannabis-friendly venue for weddings and events. Looking at the verdant landscape, ample space and close proximity to town, it’s quite easy to imagine. Back at the Riverbar farmhouse, all four rooms are located upstairs, accessible by an antique wooden staircase and accented with homey decor. Guests are welcome to bring their own edibles and vape in the room, but smoking is only allowed downstairs in the communal lounge and dining room. When guests are about, Senese-Robinson likes to host an Elevated Happy Hour featuring creative farmto-shaker mocktails and appetizers enhanced with terpene aromatics — every dish is garnished with green leaves. In the morning, her guests feast on a Humboldt County farm breakfast with dishes ranging from stuffed French toast with homemade apple butter to Senese-Robinson’s savory galettes. Eventually, the farm’s own chickens and a veggie garden will round-out the farm stay experience. A jumping off point for a new industry, the farmhouse at Riverbar Pharms is sweet landing for anyone passing through Humboldt County. But for cannabis-friendly tourists, enhancing the bucolic scenery and country hospitality with Humboldt’s world-famous flowers is a new kind of paradise. “It’s almost a secret,” says Senese-Robinson. Better Bud, Better World Cannabis farmers embrace permaculture By Trudy Thomas

SINCE THE EMERGENCE of the legal market in 2016, disagreement about the best way to grow cannabis (Indoor or outdoor? In a ground or in a pot? What is clean, what is not?) has intensified. As debate swirls, some small growers in Humboldt County quietly continue to farm cannabis using methods that not only produce great cannabis but counter global warming. They call themselves “regenerative farmers” and their method is permaculture.

Earth care Daniel Stein of Briceland Forest Farm is one of Humboldt County’s many regenerative farmers. Born in Humboldt, Stein and his family live full-time on a small farm near Redway, California. For the last 18 years, he has cultivated vegetables, raised goats and grown cannabis. Stein’s farm follows the practices and principles of permaculture, which mimic the design of natural systems. Regenerative farmers reuse everything for the benefit of the whole — the needs of one element are met with the byproducts of another in a continuous loop. Soil is key to the cultivation of good cannabis and to maintaining an environmentally sustainable grow. Stein and his colleague Jesse Dodd explain that soil is a living ecosystem where microorganisms and the plants themselves interact in complex cycles to move water, oxygen and nutrients into the earth and back out again. Stein’s 5,000 square-foot grow is planted with mixed crops in mulched beds and accompanied by non-producing, bee-loving plants that enrich and protect the soil. Stein and Dodd say growing cannabis in the ground produces the healthiest plants. Clearly soil enthusiasts, they even discuss terroir, a French word referring to the taste a particular place imparts to the plant. Dodd describes how regenerative farming plays a role in countering climate change. He explains that planting methods and soil management are particularly important. Regenerative farmers like Stein and Dodd encourage carbon sequestration — the process by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere — in their gardens. Rather than disturb the soil surface, they feed it by layering carbon and nitrogen-rich organic material on top of the ground and planting into it. Microorganisms and worms then break this material down into fertile soil. “The plant biomass is ultimately eaten by soil biology and turned into living soil 31

humus,” Dodd says. “This is an act of carbon sequestration that all plants do for us but only if they are allowed to return to the soil.” Mixed crops are also essential to producing and maintaining living soil. In this mini-ecosystem, some plants repel pests, some share nutrients and others feed the soil and protect it from drying out. Everything works together to support what’s going on below the surface. Aside from its environmental benefits, Dodd says regenerative farming in soil protected with mulch and other plants makes for a much cleaner bud. According to Dodd, “These are truly clean flowers because they are grown with living soil in a healthy environment with no need to spray or feed.” Water also contributes to the power of the soil. It works with bacteria and fungi to break down plants and other organic matter, which becomes carbon-holding humus. Regenerative farmers routinely build earthworks like swales to slow, spread and sink water. Holding water in the ground not only helps plant nutrition but recharges vital groundwater. Capturing rainfall also reduces fossil fuel use in processing and transporting municipal tap water. Ponds and roof-harvesting systems capture and store rainfall for use during dry months. Regenerative farmers also say the health of forests directly impact the health of their crops. Properly managed forests deter wildfire and provide habitat for predators that eat pesky rodents that might otherwise nibble young cannabis plants. Forests, like living soil, also have the capacity to sequester enormous amounts of atmospheric carbon and are integral to the earth’s water cycle. Local expert Dan Mar of High Tide Permaculture and Compliant Farms recommends thinning forest canopies so that sunlight reaches the ground. Without some sunlight, forests lose their diversity and become more vulnerable to wildfire. Wood from felled trees can be utilized for other purposes including firewood, managing runoff and promoting soil fertility. As Mar notes, “Reducing fuel loads, releasing hardwoods and preventing further fir encroachment of our oak woodlands and native grasslands are simple things that every property should be doing.”

Growing toward the future By design, cannabis farmers who practice permaculture run small, human-scale operations. As the market is flooded with product from large monoculture grows, regenerative farmers are hoping consumers will choose to purchase cannabis they know has been grown cleanly and responsibly. Stein has obtained a temporary state license, but with many thousands of dollars spent on licensing and permitting, he’s unsure his cannabis business will remain profitable. The next couple of years will tell whether he can continue as is or will have to make a change. Until then, this small family farm is staying the course. “We are surviving by continuing to do what we have always done,” Stein says. “Grow the best weed we can while making sure we are improving the land we are using.” Trudy Thomas is a freelance writer based in McKinleyville.

There is a connection between the quality of cannabis and the environment in which it’s grown. Many of Humboldt County’s farmers cultivate under the late summer sun in the sweeping valleys nestled between the salty sea and the dense, dark redwoods. Here, the air is clean — unspoiled by the smog of vehicles and the industry of the city. Here, nights are clear and quiet. Here, things grow. And they grow big. You can tell by the size of the ancient old growth trees that have stood guarding life behind the Redwood Curtain for hundreds of years. Here, six rivers have carved brilliant blue and green paths across the county, bringing life along their way to vast coastlines. Here, the fog rolls in from the ocean and blankets the pastures, softening the landscape like the edges of a watercolor. Here, verdant cannabis plants stretch upward against a backdrop of open sky and forest. With these stunning vistas and rolling hills in mind — some of them captured in the following shots by photographer Amy Kumler — we’ve come to the conclusion that beautiful weed comes from beautiful places.

Smokable Landscapes Humboldt Cannabis publisher gets his hands dirty Story and photos by Chuck Leishman

I’M A BAY AREA baby boomer, which means that as a child I watched the Santa Clara Valley transform from the “fruit bowl of America” to the “Silicon Valley” in the blink of an eye. Flowing creeks and streams became cement waterways and one of the most fertile valleys on earth was covered in cookie-cutter houses and asphalt. I’ve also seen the transformation of attitudes and laws about cannabis. I witnessed firsthand both the hypocrisy of prohibition and the counter-culture movement, which took root right here in Humboldt County. Whereas for a majority of my life marijuana had to be enjoyed in secret, now, as a California resident, I can grow it right in my own backyard. So, during a conversation with Nat Pennington from Humboldt Seed Company at the launch party for the inaugural issue of Humboldt Cannabis Magazine in October of 2017, I decided to do just that. I knew nothing about cannabis cultivation but as an amateur gardener I have integrated herbs and vegetables with fruit shrubs and trees as part of an “edible landscape.” I jokingly mentioned to Nat that I wanted to plant a “smokable landscape” in my yard, now that it was legal. The idea stuck — it seemed like the publisher of a cannabis magazine should experiment with cultivation. Besides, I had access to the best products and the most knowledgeable farmers in the world — right here in Humboldt County. A number of experts graciously counseled me during my journey. Jeff Poe and Daniel Hendricks of Hendrx Farms in Arcata were kind enough to provide clones for my smokable landscape. For those of you who don’t know, a clone is a rooted cutting from a mother plant. Clones are identical and used extensively by major grow operations to achieve consistency in a chosen strain. The other option is to sprout plants the old-fashioned way from seeds but for the sake of convenience and because of the generosity of the folks as HenDrx Farm, I went with clones. In mid-May, I planted two clones — a strain called Amber Glo because of the golden tinge to the leaves (the name of this strain was later changed to “Best of Show,” I wouldn’t argue with that decision) and a very savory aromatic strain called Big Bhang — in decorative 20-gallon 50

pots. I wanted Blueberry Muffin, which I had originally taken a liking to while smelling Pennington’s vape cartridges during that fateful conversation but at that particular time it wasn’t available. I used a mixture of organic compost, a locally sourced soil conditioner called Happy Frog and Fox Farm’s Ocean Breeze potting soil. I made sure the drainage was secure with terracotta shards layered in the bottom of the pots. I was instructed to regularly use organic fertilizers. I chose fish emulsion because that is my go-to choice for my fruit-and-veggie-bearing garden. Nik Erikson of Full Moon Farms diagnosed the plant conditions and recommended organic curatives to ensure healthy plants throughout the growth cycle. When the plants got big enough, Terra Carver of the Humboldt County Growers Alliance recommended plucking leaves from the bottom and center of the plants for optimum sun exposure. Locals know that Eureka is often overcast and cool because of its close proximity to California’s Northern Pacific waters so, for comic relief, I named my two-pot grow the Fog Mob. The plants immediately flourished and, much to my delight, were robust and strong. We enjoyed many sunny late spring and early summer days and the plants clearly appreciated the weather. Later on, the fog did roll in and the conditions formed a natural light deprivation situation that seemed to cause early flowering. From what I have heard, the harvest was early compared to plants grown in long-sunlight areas like Southern Humboldt and Willow Creek. This was just fine with me, I was in it for the smokable landscape, not for volume. Finally, in June, HenDrx Farm gifted me a Blueberry Muffin clone. Although it didn’t grow into a huge plant, it was healthy with deep green leaves, purple-tinged buds and that distinctive blueberry aroma that started the whole conversation about “smokable landscapes.” I spent many hours enjoying fine summer evenings with these beautiful, prolific plants enhancing the visual appeal of the rest of the garden. My baby boomer soul was, indeed, gratified by the fact that I had the freedom to grow them and that I had actually done it.

THE LATE WORLD-TRAVELER and chef Anthony Bourdain believed that

food, culture and landscape are inseparable, and one can begin to understand both people and place through flavor. In today’s food-focused culture, we’re fascinated with exploring why a particular soup, bread or wine tastes the way it does. More and more we are beginning to see how flavor is both an expression of cultural identity and of geographic location. The stuffy sounding but simple French concept terroir — how the soil of a region is expressed through flavors and aromas — gets to the heart of the matter more quickly. Wine is the archetypal example but the concept applies to any form of agriculture, pastoralism or even seafood, known as merroir. Most anyone who has passed an afternoon in a tasting room (or watched the movie Sideways) is familiar with the concept. But in Humboldt County — a wildly diverse foodscape — it’s challenging to identify a regional style or distinctive terroir from food and wine alone. Perhaps we’ve missed a course? Humboldt County is the cultural home of cannabis. It’s a corner of California bordered by the rugged Pacific Ocean and tooth-picked by majestic redwood trees. While cannabis doesn’t grow wild behind the redwoods, at times, it’s been perfected here. Just like an apple or a

After taking an early interest in pairing wine and cannabis, Evans created her blog The Herb Somm in 2017. Billed as “Your gourmet guide to cannabis,” Evans writes about food, wine and cannabis in addition to partnering with winemakers and cultivators to host upscale events throughout Northern California. At a recent “Terpenes and Terroir” dinner, Evans invited cannabis farmers to talk about their growing practices while guests passed around wine glasses of green buds, inhaling the rich terpene profiles. For now, state regulations prevent almost any THC consumption at licensed cannabis events, putting an innovative sector of the cannabis industry on hold. Still abiding by 2018 regulations, Herb Somm events educate guests on the interplay between of food, wine and flower as an immersive and experiential tool. “Terpenes directly reflect the region in which they are grown, which is why organic farming is so important if you’re trying to achieve an expression of place in your cannabis,” adds Evans. Winemaker Adrian Jewell Manspeaker refers to “expression of place” as “site-reflective.” As a producer of premium pinot noir —

wine grape, cannabis can be cultivated in countless varieties (strains) that offer various scents, flavors and nuances. The final product is also crafted for different delivery systems (i.e. dried flower, concentrates, oil, edibles, salves) and quality ranges from the mass-produced to the boutique. Finally, cannabis has more scales of measure than most agricultural products: Do you prefer a strain by bud size, aromatics or its psychoactive effects? The variables are endless. In order to pair cannabis with wine or food, it’s useful to understand terpenes. Naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis and other plants, terpenes are responsible for the signature aromas and tastes associated with different strains. Even seasoned winemakers are hard-pressed to analyze their wines with such specificity, though a high level of “terps” is comparable to a wine with a “big nose.” Terpenes such as linalool, myrcene, humulene and limonene are indicative of quality and help to distinguish a particular strain or brand of cannabis with aromas such as pine or tangerine. As the newly legal industry evolves and more cannabis knowledge flourishes, consumers will have the opportunity to pinpoint their preferences: Would you like your OG from a coastal climate cooled by off-shore breezes or heady, dry-farmed flower grown in the inland heat? “Terpenes are how plants communicate and express themselves,”

Briceland’s winemaker, Andrew Morris, learned the art of fermentation from his stepfather, Joe Collins, who opened the winery in 1985. Morris’ 2017 chardonnay is aged in stainless steel and does not undergo malolactic fermentation, negating the two primary conditions for buttery chardonnay. Humboldt entrepreneur cooks up your plants’ favorite brew By Thomas Oliver Photographs by Amy Kumler

IN AN UNASSUMING BUILDING not 50 feet from the highway and Murray Field Airport in Eureka, California, resides TeaLAB, the brainchild of Luke Andrew Besmer. The interior is utilitarian — this is a place where work is done. There are two desks, one in the main room and one in Besmer’s office, a couple of file cabinets, a collection of local art and that’s about it. Out back is a 200-plus pound pumpkin — a testament to the efficacy of TeaLAB’s product, compost tea. Though Besmer was well-versed in horticulture with a degree in botany at Humboldt State University and through employment on a large-scale grow in Southern California, his career in compost tea truly began when he started working at the Beneficial Living Center, a garden and grow supply store in Arcata. There, Besmer saw an opportunity. “I realized people were throwing away their soil after almost every season,” he said. “I thought, it couldn’t be that hard to HUMBOLDT CANNABIS

test it and amend it.” So, he started soil testing and TeaLAB was born. If you don’t already know, compost tea is “a living soup,” as Besmer describes it. To make it, “you put compost into water, shake the bacteria free, give them some food and let them multiply.” According to Besmer, compost tea is about getting as much bang for your buck as possible and, in terms of bacteria and nutrients, Besmer says it “is about turning millions into trillions.” Various plants often need specific nutrients to propagate. Cannabis, for instance, requires a great deal of nitrogen to grow. Soil devoid of nitrogen is not viable, so farmers can either introduce nitrogen-fixing plants (alfalfa, peanuts or beans) or amend the soil with nitrogen. This, however, can be an expensive and arduous process. You need to work a couple of inches of compost or fertilizer into the soil in order to amend it. If you have a large garden, that adds up quickly, as does the time required to properly mix in the amendment. Compost tea, however, is a wildly efficient alternative to traditional fertilizers. One gallon of tea can be put into 10 gallons of water and

cover roughly 400 square feet, according to Besmer. Only a handful or two of compost is needed to make about a gallon of compost tea and it can be brewed in 24 to 48 hours. Before you know it, you’ve amended your soil. Compost tea can also act as a natural insecticide when used as a foliar (on the leaves) spray, as it often includes biopesticides — bacteria, fungi or nematodes that kill or prevent pests. Testing and remediating soil with compost tea was not Besmer’s only endeavor, however. Besner is into helping others do it themselves. In 2013, only a year after starting TeaLAB, Besmer created the “BubbleSnake”— the invention that would thrust his company into the forefront of the compost tea game. Compost tea requires constant aeration in the brewing process. The mixture needs oxygen and agitation at all times in order to propagate the bacteria. Without a permanent source of oxygen, anaerobic bacteria will take over and that’s bad for your plants. This means that any brewing kit requires an aerator. Before the BubbleSnake, most aerators on the market were easy to clog and hard to clean — picture a

hollow metal crossbar with half a dozen tines through which air was expelled. With only a small opening on one end of the device — even the nimblest bottle brush would be useless in the de-gumming process. By simply bending a length of PVC piping into a lasso shape and boring holes into the “hoop,” Besmer created an aerator that can be cleaned in moments and does not clog easily. “Basically, as long as you remove the cap and push water through the snake before each use, maybe give it a little scrub, you’ll never have an issue,” says Besmer. Connect one end to an air compressor, cap the other, drop it in the barrel and you’re set to go. Besmer further simplified the process by adding a ring to the top of the BubbleSnake and fixing a lanyard and car-

abiner to the brew bag so that it can be easily attached to the snake and suspended in the solution throughout the brewing process. This “do it yourself” approach to business is fundamental to Besmer’s vision. He doesn’t just want to have the best aerator on the market, he wants to empower farmers to successfully make the compost tea on their own.
