We thrive to grow the cleanest cannabis from day one. Humboldt’s Dankest award-winning diamonds are made exclusively by Coachella Manufacturing in the greater Palm Springs CA area. A testament to the benefits of extremely low temperature extraction, painstaking purification and no small amount of patience, Vivian’s extracted strains precipitate crystalized THCa amidst a slurry of terpenes and complementary cannabinoids. The finished product boasts large, ultra-lucent gems swimming in exquisite flavor. Considering the formidable high and the sophisticated palate, these diamonds truly are Dankest! Humboldt’s Dankest offers both pure and terpeneinfused distillate syringes that are formulated using ultra-purified, hydrocarbonconcentrated cannabis oil produced by Coachella Manufacturing. Extracted from the hand-trimmed cuttings of HD’s prized flower, Vivian’s distillate regularly tests at or higher than 95% total cannabinoid potency. The infused syringes are mixed with 100% cannabis derived terpene and cannabinoid blends found in Dankest’s award winning sauce and diamond products.

Providing an extreme high and, with the option of being spiked with terps’ delicious flavoring, these container/ applicators are ideal for dabbing, intensifying a blunt or making any food a medicated edible. Humboldt’s Dankest “DIAMONDS” sauces made by Coachella Manufacturing incorporate industry leading technologies which extract and concentrate the entire array of desired compounds held in a strain. In Recent years the cannabis community has seen a shift of attention from being focused solely on THC and CBD to discovering the benefits and medicinal value of all known cannabinoids and terpenes. So-called “Full Spectrum Extracts” generally refer to the available spectrum of cannabinoids/terpenes in a specific strain. By combing specific strains with unique spectrums Coachella Manufacturing can broaden the total spectrum, increase the medicinal value and create a “Fuller” overall spectrum than previously available. Humboldt’s Dankest award-winning Sauce mixes combine the cannabinoid and terpene content of such strains including but not limited to Lemon Larry, Sherbert and Gelato.

If you’re curious about where your cannabis
and a chance to hang out with the folks who raise the finest cannabis money can buy. Humboldt manufacturing is thriving these days, too. “In the Zone” gives you a tour of the Papa & Barkley plant and the designated cannabis business areas that cities around the county have created to nurture the industry. That’s good news for both small producers and folks who want to support them, like BEAR Extraction House. Speaking of locally grown and processed, we’ve got a spread of edibles you’ll want to check out. Chocolates, gummies and more for every taste and intensity. From local to global: The Humboldt-based Soma company is taking its balanced organic juices to the next level. The targeted formulas (which are delicious, by the way) use herbs, spices and natural juices to boost health and relaxation, and maybe, just maybe, replace your morning coffee. And Soma is working with farms in rural India to source native herbs while helping locals there by investing in improving sustainable practices. Soma is also teaming up with Humboldt farmers on a line of infused beverages, so look out for those on the shelf, too. Of course, if you can come up for a visit, you’re always welcome.
comes from, take a trip up to Humboldt to breathe our fresh air and stroll under our redwoods. If you can’t get away right now, no worries. In this issue, we’ll give you the lay of the land — and introduce you to the folks who work it. How safe and eco-friendly is the cannabis you’re buying? Well, if you’re shopping at a legal dispensary (and make sure you are), it’s been thoroughly tested for all kinds of contaminants and grown subject to strict environmental regulations. In “Keep it Clean,” you’ll learn how your tinctures and flowers are checked and double checked before they reach you — and how you can go further to minimize their impact on the planet. One family-run farm keeping it natural is DewPoint. Andelain and Prem Roy come from a long line of Humboldt cultivators growing the best way they know: in the mountain sunshine, with their hands on every plant. We’ll take you to the place they call home in “A Farm in the Mountains,” and you’ll see why the best cannabis comes from one of the most beautiful places in California. Of course, if you make it to the Emerald Triangle in person, it’s not like you can just walk up and chat with our farmers. Oh, wait, you can! In this issue, we’ll show you to a table at one of Southern Humboldt’s Meet the Farmers events — fantastic local food and drink,

A Farm Mountains IN THE
DewPoint keeps it in the family
Story and photographs by Joyce Endaya, NomadiCam
DEWPOINT FARMS IS NESTLED in the highlands of the towering, ancient
redwoods, overlooked by the peaks of the King Mountain Range, with the Mattole River, clear as glass and sparkling green, winding its way through the land below. The natural elements create a perfect micro-climate for growing quality cannabis. In a rapidly expanding industry faced with a whirlwind of shifting regulations and stiff competition, Andelain Roy, owner of DewPoint Farms, is a third-generation Humboldt cannabis cultivator who’s thriving. DewPoint follows a family tradition of love and dedication
to growing cannabis. A mother of two, Roy considers carrying on that cannabis farming legacy an honor. She explains, “This is not just a business. It’s our home. One we’re proud to raise our children in and teach them to continue this way of life. We were born in Humboldt County and it is the only place we dream to be.” According to the Humboldt County Growers Association, “Humboldt County now leads the state in licensed cannabis cultivation.” On the crest of that wave, DewPoint moved quickly into compliance and was the second cultivation company in Humboldt County to

receive an annual state license. The farm’s methods are rooted in a foundation of sustainability and environmentally conscious practices. The plants are showered with water from the Mattole River watershed and raised in only natural sunlight and solar energy is used to power 100 percent of the farm. The family’s own food crops grow alongside their cannabis plants. Andelain is not only dedicated to her craft and family tradition but to her community and the land. She sits on a handful of nonprofit boards, provides support to the Mattole Watershed and Mattole Fire Department financially and by lending her voice. “It’s important for people to know [Humboldt cannabis cultivators’] passion, and know who we are and what we stand for. We’re a family and it is our responsibility to ensure our land is protected and our industry continues to thrive,” she says. “We have generations of blood, sweat and tears poured into our lands and our craft.” When Roy is not on a trip to the river with her family, packing school lunches or managing her business, she and her husband, Prem, are in the fields cultivating some of the best quality cannabis Humboldt has to offer. They start their days at sunrise: Prem heading to the fields for 12 to 14 hours and Andelain to prepare breakfast, send her children off to school and finally to the office to answer emails and tackle the stack of compliance paperwork until night. After the children are tucked in bed, Andelain and Prem convene to discuss the days ahead over Sleepy Time tea. Then they head to bed and start their routine again at dawn. Being a small family farm can have its fair share of opportunities and obstacles. Large, multi-million-dollar cannabis companies that don’t rely on sunshine and seasonal cycles can harvest every week while DewPoint harvests twice a year. Although this may seem to place DewPoint at a disadvantage, it’s what puts Humboldt cannabis on the map and earns devotees from all corners of the world. “I will never commoditize my plants. I value the quality and uniqueness of my products far too much,” states Andelain. DewPoint does not have a team of seasoned business professionals managing all aspects of the company. That means Andelain is the compliance manager, sales team and co-cultivator. When they need to lead marketing and sales, she swaps her farm boots for heels, throws on her suit and drives off in her diesel truck to the

next business meeting. “One day I’ll put on my suit, which doubles as my armor because at times I feel I am fighting for my livelihood. The next day, I’ll be working alongside Prem in the fields. When people purchase my product, they should know Prem and I planted those seeds and touched every plant. Our motto is ‘look, listen, and feel,’ and we employ our senses each time we step foot into our greenhouses.” With regulations being constantly overhauled, cannabis cultivators are faced with a host of challenges. Each unexpected change or added fee could make or break small family farms. In 2018, when packaging regulations were in place, the Roys planned on investing $100,000 in product packaging materials. If they had, DewPoint would not have recovered from the abrupt termination of the packaging regulation that followed. With the most recent changes in the system of tracking and tracing cannabis from farm to dispensaries, she lost significant time and money spent hiring and training an employee for the program, along with the purchase of thousands of dollars of materials. But as the dust begins to settle, she is thankful for the structure and safety protocols to keep cannabis safe, legitimate and high-quality. There are other practical benefits to legal farming, too. Last fall she and her neighbors gathered with Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal to develop a neighborhood watch and train community members. Andelain explains that cannabis farms can be vulnerable to crime “as a cash-based business and [given] the fact that we are required to list our address in public records. … Prior to legalization, we would have never worked hand in hand with the sheriff on matters of safety and security. This meeting proves times have changed for the better and the community is stronger than ever.” Whatever comes next, when the sun comes up on the mountain tomorrow, the Roys will be up and back to work.
“Our motto is ‘look, listen, and feel.’”

TOURISM
MEETthe MEE FARMERS FAR Food, wine and cannabis producers gather at Garberville’s Benbow Inn By Stella Girkins Photographs by Sam Armanino
DRIVING UP U.S. HIGHWAY 101, the towering redwood trees of Richardson Grove State Park act as a portal into southern Humboldt County, representing the larger than life reputation that the area holds: a history of counter culture and cannabis cultivation. Emerging on the other side of the canopy, the lighted sign of the Benbow Historic Inn poised over the highway for decades represented contrasting sides of Humboldt’s culture and economy. However, with legalization, local cannabis growers and inn management have built a surprising bridge with a new dinner series called Meet the Farmers and host an open discussion about the history and future of farming in Humboldt County. At the end of September, the Benbow Inn collaborated with the Southern Humboldt Business & Visitor’s Bureau (SHBVB) to host its second Meet the Farmers event, featuring a dozen resident cannabis cultivators, along with two vintners. The affair also acted as a reception for Feast of Fields

Humboldt, characterized by the SHBVB as a delicious event with local farmer samplings, artistic creations and bubbling libations, all with a farmer’s flair. Meet the Farmers took place on a cool autumn evening on the back lawn of the Benbow Inn. Hosts, speakers and guests mingled on the lawn, sipping Briceland Vineyards’ wine and Gyppo Ale Mill brews, and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres provided by the inn. Then, SHBVB Director Laura Lasseter called the first round of speakers to the front tables framed in the background by the stone arch of Benbow Bridge while the rest took a seat on the white lawn chairs. While there are no rules as to what speakers discuss in their allotted time, many farmers spoke in anticipation of Feast of Fields and, in particular, International Cannabis Farmers Association’s Taste of Terroir Education. The International Cannabis Farmers Association (ICFA) describes itself as a group of cannabis farmers, scientists, and other thoughtful stakeholders working together to promote the unique quality and ecological benefits of sun-grown cannabis products. ICFA member Tina Gordon of Moon Made Farms described her involvement: “I joined up with ICFA because I fell in love with this plant being grown outside and the sun-grown expression of this plant. I feel compelled in a very deep way to see this process going forward.” One of the core beliefs of the ICFA is preserving the heritage of traditional farming communities. This means growing outdoors where natural factors, such as light, soil, topography and climate, affect the buds. “(ICFA) is a sun-grown specific organization,” said Chrystal Ortiz of High Water Farms. “We will always be a sun-grown specific organization because we feel it is really important that there be advocacy that is directly related to sun-grown farmers and the issues that we face.” The criminalization of marijuana farming pushed the practice indoors, where these factors had little effect on the outcome of the product. Furthermore, growing indoors put a major burden on the environment in an area where people are typically environmentally conscious. After being busted for marijuana cultivation, Robert Steffano of Villa Paradiso passed time in jail by thinking about the environmental impact of his indoor grow operation. “I started doing the math on how much fuel and diesel I was running those years and it’s just disgusting,” he said. “It’s enough to drive to the moon and back two and a half times.” However, with legalization, farms are investing more time and money into how the environment can enhance a bud’s profile and how farming practices can improve the land. They want farming and the environment to have a mutually beneficial relationship. “Cannabis as

a cash crop has allowed us to take risks with our farming and experiment with just how beneficial, how regenerative for the land we can make the things that we do and risk it,” said Daniel Stein of Briceland Forest Farm. “If we were betting the farm on a crop of carrots, I wouldn’t be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to do no till this year and see how that goes.’” With the return to outdoor farming along with the influx of competitive cannabis markets, there’s a heightened discussion about what makes Humboldt grown marijuana so special and a lot of that comes down to terroir. Terroir, in the most basic of terms, is the environmental factors that affect a crop and is most commonly associated with grapes and the wine-making process. This includes factors such as soil, topography and climate. Vintners have been studying these properties for decades. However, cannabis growers are now adopting the term in order to define buds. “It takes a long time to understand how the soil affects (a crop) — how the weather affects it, the wind and things as simple as a change in the curvature of the land,” said Andrew Morris of Briceland Vineyards. “It takes a long time to develop that and it’s interesting to see the parallels between what happens with wine and cannabis farming.” However, Morris, whose vineyard has operated for over 30 years, believes that terroir is not just about the land, but its history and the people that live on it. “We normally think of terroir as being the land and the weather, but really it’s local influences, which include the people and the cultural tendencies and all the things that make a place what it is,” he explained. However, speakers agreed that what truly makes crops grown in Humboldt County unique is not just the environmental climate but the cultural climate, as well. “We have something very special here beyond just the cannabis. We have this really strong community that comes together over everything — fire protection, land conservation, cannabis cultivation,” said Galen Doherty of Whitethorn Valley Farms. “It’s what really unites us and makes us different than much of around California.” 20
HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2019
Stein also echoed this sentiment, saying, “A lot of this comes down to place and the magic that happens with the right people and the right connection to place. That’s what we’re talking about when it comes to terroir and the magic that comes out of this plant in this place.” Many of the speakers also noted another difference between Humboldt cannabis cultivation culture compared to the rest of the world: female representation. In fact, women made up almost half of the speakers at the inn that evening. Wendy Kornberg of Sunnabis explained how she travels frequently for her job and speaks at a lot of cannabis events. “What you see going to events is a lot of guys,” she said. “What I see up here is a lot of women being represented in our economy and the equality that we have here is something super special.” Despite the air of celebration, farmers also spoke of the hardships that came with cannabis cultivation from losing their livelihoods to the difficulties of going through the permitting process. “We’ve all been through the guerilla growing era where the helicopters hovered over us and pushed us underground, to the days of diesel dope, to reemerge under greenhouses and into the green rush and now, finally, legalization,” said Nik Erikson of Full Moon Farms. “What I’ve definitely seen here tonight, looking at all of you, is that we’ve come out of this stronger and wiser and more attached to the plant that binds us all.” Listening to all the speakers at the second Meet the Farmers event, it’s clear that “Humboldt grown” is about more than just cannabis. It’s the food that is grown here and the wine that is produced. Perhaps, most importantly, it’s the people and community here that make all these crops taste so sweet. As Sunshine Johnston of Sunboldt Grown put it, “When you combine the juice of those grapes from the land with the food that’s grown here and finish it with good herb, it’s good for your soul.” Stella Girkins is a freelance writer based in Southern Humboldt.

KEEP
it CLEAN Making sure your cannabis is eco friendly By Kristin Kirby Photographs by Zach Lathouris
IN HUMBOLDT, we’re no
strangers to the idea of buying sustainable, eco-friendly and healthy products. Much of our local food and even wine is grown organically. So it makes sense that when it’s time to partake, many of us want a healthy product that 26
takes as little toll on the planet as possible. We’ve all heard about stream diversions, poisoning of wildlife, chemicals in the soil and hash labs exploding. So now that cannabis is legal in California, how do you know what you’re buying at your local dispensary is not only safe, but also not damaging the planet? After all, you can buy a perfectly legal mattress never knowing it’s soaked in cancer-causing chemical fire retardants. So what about your weed? While you won’t find the organic certification on your Durban Poison just yet, growers and distributors are making a point to source product that’s eco-friendly and healthy in every phase of the production here in Humboldt County. Ray Markland, owner of EcoCann, a cannabis dispensary in Eureka’s Old Town, knows a thing or two about the cannabis business — he grew up in Humboldt, after all. He points out that most of the people in the legal marijuana business here aren’t only in it for the money; they do it because they care about creating a sustainable industry for the county. After the hard lessons of the Gold Rush and the logging industry, sustainability is the goal for lots of folks across the spectrum of businesses here.
You can go a long way toward making sure your cannabis is eco friendly just by buying legal product from a licensed dispensary. California has extremely strict guidelines as to what can and can’t be sold. Farms have to adhere to stringent guidelines concerning things like water usage, grading and pest control, and they can be inspected at any time. All cannabis is tracked from the cultivator to the distributor to the dispensary to the consumer. All dispensaries in Humboldt County are licensed but elsewhere in the state, unlicensed outlets exist due to a lack of enforcement resources. They may even look like legal outlets. One way to check that out is to search a dispensary's name on Weedmaps.com, where the shop’s license will be posted, if it has one. You can also cross-reference that by going to the California Bureau of Cannabis Control and typing in the license number there (sometimes searching for a name in the BCC can get tricky since dispensaries aren’t allowed to have bank accounts). If you’re buying cannabis as either an extraction or flower, the legal stuff will have undergone specific tests for each category. Every product has to go through a strict testing process by a third party

that looks for cannabinoid content (the amount of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids present), runs microbiological screening (for salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria), and checks for mycotoxins (mold) and heavy metals (cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury), as well as moisture content. The biggest category of testing, however, is for chemical residues — mainly pesticides and fungicides. Flower products are tested for 66 different chemicals, including myclobutanil, pyrethrin and spinosads, to name just a few. Extracted products are tested against their own set of parameters, since the extraction process means any harmful chemicals present will be in a more concentrated form, just like the cannabinoids themselves. Once the product gets to your local dispensary, the outlet gets info on the delivery person — including the year, make and model of their car — and who received the product in the store. Then there’s a two-part signing process just to receive it. Every shipment that comes into the dispensary is scrutinized to make sure that the number on the product’s COA (Certificate of Analysis from the inspector) matches the ID number on the product itself, and that the COA indicates the product has passed in every HUMBOLDT CANNABIS

Even though California has certain rigid standards about how things can be grown — no pesticides that would harm wildlife, no stream diversion — there are still legally compliant farms around the state that use less eco-friendly and more energy-intensive methods for growing. For one thing, legal outdoor growing is always going to be the most eco-friendly, since 28
the product is grown in the sun instead of under energy-sucking grow lights. And since Humboldt County has the perfect climate for growing cannabis, it’s kind of a no-brainer. Many growers around our part of the Emerald Triangle also go the extra mile to incorporate rainwater catchment systems and solar power. Marcus Armstrong with Soma in a waterfall in the mountains of Kerala, India.
PLAYING FOOTBALL IN HIGH SCHOOL, Marcus Armstrong would consume up to 4,000 calories a day in order to gain body mass for the sport and he bulked up quickly. “By noon, you were at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 calories and by the end of the day, you were at 4,000,” he said. Once he graduated and started his career, he knew he no longer needed to be carrying so much weight. However, cutting back from consuming that many calories proved difficult and Armstrong, who has a background in kinesiology, began conducting personal diet and exercise experiments to discover what worked best for his overall well-being. Despite a failed venture into fruitarianism, Armstrong found a natural

energy and improved digestive tract through consuming juice mixed with herbs and spices. This is how he eventually came to start his brand Soma, a new herbal Ayurvedic* drink made right here in Humboldt. So far, Soma, which means elixir of the gods in Sanskrit, consists of three different blends: Namaste, Namaskar and Shanti. Namaste is designed as an alternative to a caffeine beverage for the morning with herbs and spices that can help improve heart and liver health, including ashwagandha that can help relieve stress. Namaskar is for a middle of the day pick-me-up and has ginkgo bilboa, which can improve brain function and memory. Finally, Shanti helps the body relax and prepare for rest with mugwort and valerian root. “Juice is healthier than most people think, especially if you drink it the way it’s supposed to be drunk: morning, noon and night,” Armstrong explained. “There’s a high amount of calories in the morning, lower consumption during the day and the least at night.” Although Armstrong thinks many people already know this, they don’t practice it. So he created the Soma beverages to make it easier to get the body on track. Armstrong began surround*Ayurveda is a holistic ing himself with a multi-faceted health system that originated in the Indian team to help him get the project subcontinent thousands off the ground. Erikson became a believer in the product the very first time he tried the Namaste morning blend. “It personally changes my own morning habits,” he said. “When I have it, I will skip coffee and I feel way better throughout the day.” From there, the team went down to check out a bottling plant in Sacramento. Seeing the potential, they decided to embark on the Soma journey together. Although Armstrong had already been working closely with an herbalist to develop the recipe, he wanted to go to the source of the ingredients. So the team decided to go to the state of Kerala, India, where Bastin had family, and seek out herbs and spices to use in the beverages. The trip lasted almost six weeks and they spent time learning from

the locals, from pulling ginger and turmeric out of the backyard to going on medicinal farm tours and learning about hundreds of different plants with various health benefits and healing properties. “They’re still so in touch with nature’s original path,” Erikson said of his time in Kerala. “Looking back at a lot of ancient medicines, they start plantbased. I think we got derailed from that course with the onset of monetary value and wanting to produce things in a lab and make them synthetically.” Their hosts showed them unparalleled hospitality and attentiveness. The team was struck by the sense of community and family pride, not to mention the cultural connection to the earth. “They forage with camels or cows behind them. Cut down this plant. Dig up these roots,” Armstrong said. “Then you have, literally, truck beds full of herbs that they now go and divvy up between all the families every day.” Besides procuring ingredients from these small farms, the Soma team and their hosts in India set up an information exchange to continue to learn from each other. “We’re doing a cross educational thing with them, as well, about farming practices and being sustainable because they still use a lot of plastics in their methodologies,” Erikson said. However, over the course of their time in Kerala, it became clear to the team that they wanted and needed to have a bigger impact on their host’s state. The Soma team saw lots of natural beauty in Kerala, but they also saw a lot of litter. “When poverty and population cross, pollution follows because they don’t have the resources,” Erikson 34
explained. The whole team spoke at length about ways they could help the Indian state they are representing with their brand. Although it is still early and they are just getting ready for their soft launch in Humboldt County, they have major plans down the road. “I feel like it’s part of our duty to do that because we’re gaining a lot from that culture, so we need to give something back,” said Moran. Once they returned to Humboldt and began work on launching the Soma product, they noticed a fault in their plan. Besides sourcing ingredients directly from India, they were almost entirely based in Humboldt from conception to distribution. However, their bottling plant was located in Sacramento. They wanted to be 100 percent Humboldt employed, so they shifted gears and found a new bottling plant in Fortuna. This move set the team back a bit for their soft launch but it was well worth it. “That is something that we hold precious, that we are keeping everything local, but we have this bond with India,” Armstrong said. “We’re not getting every single spice that we’re using from India but the bulk of the spices that we’re using are going to come from India.” Down the line, Soma plans to launch a CBDinfused line of beverages. The CBD will be sourced from Humboldt at Erikson’s cannabis farm Full Moon Farms. These infused beverages will be clearly distinguishable from the standard version, even going under a different name, Somaras. In order to make this happen, however, the team must work closely with the farms in India to make sure it can pass the same stringent Category 3 testing that cannabis products in the United States have

to overcome. “It’s more intense than any other product on the market,” Moran said. “Something that we’re really starting to look into is how we can promote better farming practices and show these farmers how they can farm organically.” Although CBD will be a part of the Soma brand eventually and many team members currently work in the cannabis industry, Soma is a Humboldtbased product rooted outside of that industry. “This is purely an organic venture as a feel-good move outside of cannabis,” Erikson said. “I really think the cannabis industry can be draining at times and it’s good to have a positive focus outside of that angle.” That being said, legalization has blurred the line between the growing community and the non-growing community. Permitted farmers are using the opportunity to openly invest in the people, putting money into sustainable farming methods and donating to local nonprofits. In a way, Soma is a bridge between the two communities, a team comprised of players inside and outside the cannabis realm, coming together to inspire change in their consumers, the Humboldt economy and abroad in India. They hope that their products encourage a healthier lifestyle full of natural energy throughout the day, mental and
physical peace, and a restful, rejuvenating night’s sleep. They firmly believe in a grassroots approach based in Humboldt County from local production to local distribution and marketing. Finally, they look forward to working with the farmers in Kerala on a cross-educational level, learning from each other, and hope to eventually benefit India outside of the state of Kerala. “It’s an India-meets-Humboldt thing,” Moran explained. “We’re all in Humboldt and not only do we want to have a positive impact here, but we also want to have a positive impact in India because we’re going to be representing India.” In the team’s eyes, Soma is less of a beverage and more of an alternative lifestyle brand. Not only do they hope that people get behind the potential physical and mental transformative powers of the product, but they also hope people see the possibility for change on a grander scale through Soma. “It feels so good to do something for you and for other people, something that you can really stand behind and creating a culture around it,” Moran said. “You are so fortunate if within your lifetime you can create a positive culture.”

might not realize there are about a thousand steps between planting a seed and lighting up that joint from your favorite local dispensary. Along with licensing, cultivation, tracking and testing, the processing of cannabis is an industry in and of itself. California’s Medicinal and Adult-Use Regulation and Safety Act outlines standards and licensing requirements for commercial cannabis manufacturing, but it is up to local jurisdictions to decide where it can occur. In Humboldt County, municipalities are taking the lead in creating their own guidelines for accommodating cannabis manufacturing and the industry within an industry is thriving. Arcata established the Cannabis Innovation Zone (CIZ) in an area zoned as Industrial General/Industrial Limited in the northern portion of the city, along State Route 299. The city began looking into creating a Medical Marijuana Innovation Zone (MMIZ) for cannabis back in the former Flakeboard plant in 2015 knowing the state would soon go legal. “In short, we chose the area because of the extractive resource industries that have been [there] for the past several years,” says Community Development Director David Loya. “The predominant industrial uses in that area were ideal for a number of reasons THE TYPICAL CANNABIS CONSUMER

to establish this new zone.” Loya says the city has no intention of putting a cap on the number of facilities operating in the CIZ and welcomes as many as the market will support. “The cannabis industry needs support regionally and across the state. The county is placed well in the industry for historic reasons and the cannabis businesses are lucky to have support throughout the county in the various cities.” A grand opening ceremony in November welcomed a new warehouse to the CIZ, which promises to bring at least 70 new jobs to Arcata. The building resides in the West End Campus, which is already occupied by BEAR Extraction House, Northern Emeralds, UpNorth Humboldt, Humboldt Apothecary, SOURCE Nursery, Humble Hill and Simple Solutions, with Arcata Processing Co. and Flower Company soon to join. “The city of Arcata has been our biggest ally,” says Stacia Eliason of BEAR Extraction House, who has been involved in the CIZ

process since the very beginning. “We had just bought the old Wayne Bare trucking property with the intention to do cannabis on site ... the MMIZ concept came as a great and pleasant surprise to us since that was aligned with what we were hoping to do.” Eventually, the Arcata City Council decided to zone some 12 properties in Zone 1 and limited permits available in Zone 2. “After a couple years of building updates on our site, we were licensed to operate at the beginning of 2018.” Similar to Arcata, Rio Dell established the Humboldt Rio Dell Business Park (HRDBP) located at the former sawmill situated along U.S. Highway 101 that has sat defunct for well over a decade. “The vision for the park is for it to be a value-added manufacturing center for the Emerald Triangle, although there is a good amount of interest and activity in cultivation itself,” says Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp. “The city began aggressively looking into legalized cannabis in December of 2015. The HRDBP came about as a compromise by the city council that was divided over newly legalized cannabis.” Despite division among the council, it recognized the economic need in the community and the potential of legal cannabis. The creation of the business park has proved to have a positive effect on the tiny HUMBOLDT CANNABIS

city. Along with the creation of 25 local jobs, Knopp says revenue from cannabis this year will be in the low six figures, which is a huge feat for such a small city. “A traditional non-cannabis business would need to do $15 million in annual taxable sales in order to generate the same revenue for city services. We will actually take in more cannabis tax revenue than any other city in the Emerald Triangle but we actually have one of the lowest rates of those cities that do have taxes.” Knopp says there are currently six licensed facilities operating in the HRDBP: two manufacturers, a testing laboratory, one processor, one distributer and one indoor cultivator. “On the immediate horizon is another cultivation facility, one tester, one processor, a nursery (with a tissue culture facility) and two dispensaries. We also have another four projects in various stages of early development.” Most of the operators in the business park take in product from unincorporated portions of the county, with some coming from Mendocino and Trinity, as well. Eureka has taken a slightly different approach, choosing to allow cannabis manufacturing throughout the city. The majority of cannabis manufacturers have set up shop in the Hinge District, along U.S. Highway 101 between Broadway and A Street. “It wasn’t necessarily intended to become the epicenter of cannabis manufacturing in Humboldt County, it just happened to benefit from a mix of the right zoning and a location outside of the Coastal Zone,” says Rob Dumouchel, Eureka’s acting planning and building manager. “All of the industrially zoned parcels in the city are in the HUMBOLDT CANNABIS

Coastal Zone except for those found in the Hinge between Third and Fourth streets, what some colloquially refer to as ‘Extraction Alley.’” Dumouchel says the city of Eureka wanted to avoid creating a special cannabis overlay district and instead chose to look at cannabis manufacturing as a regular manufacturing use. “If it’s appropriate for manufacturing to exist in a commercial or industrial zone district, then there’s really no reason that cannabis manufacturing can’t be included within it.” The city has received approximately 40 manufacturing applications, half of which have been approved to operate. “I think it’s important to understand that cannabis manufacturing exists along a wide spectrum,” says Dumouchel. “On one end, we have big companies like Papa & Barkley that have a large and efficient manufacturing operation spread across multiple locations in the city. In the middle, we have small businesses that have found success with great products and branding, like Kiskanu or Space Gem. We also have operations that are just two dudes in a small commercial space making bath bombs and pre-rolls.” Papa & Barkley has taken an unusual approach with its spread across Eureka, akin to its distinctive take on processing cannabis. Adam Grossman founded Papa & Barkley in 2016 in honor of his father and his father’s dog, Barkley. The company’s signature Releaf Balm was initially created by Grossman in an effort to relieve his father’s debilitating back pain and get him out of hospice care. Ultimately, the experience inspired Grossman to perfect his process and share it with others. What is unique about Papa & Barkley is its whole plant infusion process, which simply uses water, heat and pressure. Dave Aumentado, production facilities manager, led a tour through Papa & Barkley’s Second Street facility, where the full process

can be observed. Upon walking into the 9,000-square-foot building, you’re hit with the rousing scent of cannabis, peppermint and lavender. As we made our way into the processing portion of the facility, jovial employees were checking and placing lids on freshly filled jars of their signature Releaf Balm along an assembly line. A Nirvana track played over the commotion of machines and employees. Aumentado walked me through the whole plant infusion process from start to finish. It begins with cannabis grown by any of the 150 Emerald Triangle farms the company partners with. “When legalization came up, there was this fear that a lot of [small farmers] wouldn’t be able to make it,” says Aumentado. “We found a once-ina-lifetime opportunity, here at the end of prohibition, to be able to set the standard for what we want to see in the industry. Supporting local farmers is a part of that.” The trim and small buds are packaged in 2-pound black bags and taken to a tumbler that shakes the keef, or resinous trichomes, away from the plant material. That keef is packaged and labeled, and will eventually make its way into little white sleeves that are pressed under high heat. “Essentially, this is extracting cannabinoid content in the form of a concentrate,” says Aumentado. The end product is rosin that is eventually used for Releaf capsules and patches. The plant material left over after keefing is soaked with organic coconut oil. The infused oil is eventually pressed and filtered away from the plant matter. The oil is then blended with beeswax and essential oils, and packaged as Releaf salves and balms. Aumentado says Papa & Barkley is bursting at the seams — that’s why it decided to move into the new facility at the south end of Eureka. The company will still operate in the locations spread across Eureka but the new location will be the hub. Papa & Barkley is just one example of a Humboldt-based cannabis business focused on staying local. And that’s a task made easier when processing finds welcoming space. Eureka’s approach to zoning for cannabis manufacturing may be different from Arcata or Rio Dell, but one thing remains clear: Each municipality is focused on maintaining the Humboldt brand by supporting local farmers and local cannabis businesses.

WHEN
QUALITY MATTERS
Here at Full Moon Farms, we pride ourselves on being one of the small craft farms nestled in the hills of Humboldt County. Being a craft farm means working with nature, respecting the land, always using organic methods and bringing you the highest quality cannabis that we can produce. Our family has been in Northern California for 7 generations, and we care deeply about our community, and give back to it as often as we can. Craft farmers have
a chance to break the traditional corporate model by putting people before profit, not always doing things the easy way, but doing things the right way — like a water neutral system that utilizes rain catchment and the use of companion plants to help with pest management and plant oil production. You can always feel good about our flowers. Come taste the difference and see for yourself why the hills of Humboldt are so legendary. – Nik Erikson
