HUMBOLDT CANNABIS MAGAZINE
SUMMER 2020
Now and then
it’s a comfort to return to the classics. (And who’s not looking for comfort right about now?) That includes some of the cannabis strains that have stood the test of time, many of which have their literal and figurative roots in Humboldt County. Trainwreck, Salmon Creek Big Bud, Blueberry Muffin and Garberville Purple Kush are foundational to a number of popular plants but somewhat elusive these days. In “Legacies,” you’ll hear from the local cultivators working to preserve them. We’ve also got a look at software that’s helping the cannabis industry catch up and keep pace with the demands of the market. Those drowning in spreadsheets might want to look at how, with input from members of the local industry, Backbone IQ software is trying to make track and trace compliance, as well as communication between farmers and processors, more manageable. Last year’s Emerald Cup turned the spotlight on a number of Humboldt cultivators, including Ridgeline Farms. In “Quality Over Quantity,” you’ll get to know second-generation farmer Jason Gellman, whose crops have earned an enviable streak of
awards for sun-grown flowers. Winners like Green Lantern might tempt one to ramp up production but he’s got his reasons for keeping it small. Should that story spark your own dreams of farming in our lush landscape, you’ll want to peruse our piece on the real estate professionals who know the territory — literally. Location is everything, so they say, but environmental compliance takes that notion to another level, as you’ll see in “Buying the Dream.” If you’re in more of a browsing mood, you’ll find a spread of some of the Humboldt products we’re loving right now in our Feeling Good section, both with and without a THC buzz. It’s always tough picking favorites and if you’ve got recommendations, don’t keep them a secret — hit us up via email or Instagram with whatever goodies you’ve enjoyed from behind the Redwood Curtain. And, of course, the index at the back of this issue is all you need to find the people and products that have made Humboldt cannabis sought after around the world.

LEGACIES Preserving classic Humboldt strains By Isabella Vanderheiden
San Francisco hippies looking to start anew headed to Humboldt County in what would later become the “back to the land” movement. Once there, they erected little houses in the hills and many began growing cannabis. It began with Mexican and Thai strains, and then an Afghani strain made its way to California somewhere in the 1970s. This set the foundation for Humboldt Kush and other Humboldt legacy strains to follow. Cultivators in the Emerald Triangle are currently working to preserve some of these strains but many have been lost in time. Trainwreck, Salmon Creek Big Bud, Blueberry Muffin and Garberville Purple Kush can still be found today, and are components of many popuAS THE 1960S DREW TO A CLOSE,

lar varieties, but the original strains are difficult to find. “Legacy strains, things that helped make Humboldt famous were originally derived from land race stock brought here from other cannabis producing regions and hybridized to fit the needs of the local farmers,” says Kevin Jodrey, career cannabis cultivator and owner of Wonderland Nursery in Garberville. “These lines became the building blocks of many of today’s elite lines, but sadly, most do not exist today.” As cannabis became more mainstream, commercialized varieties appearing in magazines began to overshadow the varieties once

prevalent in Humboldt. “As the change occurred in customer demand, Humboldt cultivators grew what the market desired,” says Jodrey. “As time went by, fewer and fewer of the original lines remained.” Despite this change, Humboldt cultivators stepped up to the challenge and continued to produce exquisite, world-renowned cannabis. “Any variety produced here became well known due to the quality and the quantity of production. Those two things made Humboldt legendary in the newer markets like it once was in the heritage markets.” Around the same time, cannabis cultivators moved away from seed starts and began the more dependable process of cloning their plants. “Seed grown plants do not offer consistency,” says Nathaniel Pennington, founder of Humboldt Seed Co. “There was no such thing as seeds that had a known outcome.” Basically, plants grown from seed would stay in the same genre; the purples
would be purple and the kushy would be kushy, but other characteristics would vary. “Eventually … large buyers wanted large quantities and consistency. Same smell, same look,” says Pennington. Since its founding in 2001, the Humboldt Seed Co. has worked to revolutionize cannabis seed production and produce a more consistent product. In 2018, the company teamed up with local farmers to host the world’s largest phenotype hunt, a collaborative project in pursuit of unique genetics. Humboldt Seed Co. stocks dozens of varieties, however, few legacy strains remain. “We have a strain of Trainwreck in a breeding chamber so it is not affected by outside pollen,” says Pennington. “We often revisit the original clone genetics.” When cannabis cultivation began to move indoors in the 1990s, chemical pest and fungal controllers became the norm. “Our heritage was originally outdoor cultivation,” Jodrey recalls. “Our influence on the plants produced under those conditions helped to create a survivability that cannot be dismissed. The point of maintaining heritage strains is that the genes contain information created by the acclimatization of those plants to our region. That information is what plants need to be able to survive pathogens that appear and weather anomalies.” Preservation is important but difficult, even if the original strain is accessible. California law only allows six plants per person at any one time for personal use, making it nearly impossible for cultivators outside legal farms to hold stock and preserve genetics. “The situation is very detrimental for long-term preservation of things that were once in vogue but not so much now,” says Jodrey. However, Jodrey still holds copies of plants that were once valuable or noteworthy to breed at a later date. “All trends return to the source at some point and without the base plants used to make the trend, we miss out on future development and survivability.” Jodrey and Pennington both work with breeders by helping them acquire stock to work into their own projects and eventually bank. If California cannabis laws were less restrictive, they say, more breeders would have the opportunity to stock legacy strains, resulting in an uptick of diversity. “As that is not the case,” says Jodrey, “We face fewer and fewer lines held from times past until only a tiny fraction will remain.” Isabella Vanderheiden is a freelance journalist based in Humboldt County.

Ridgeline Farms keeps it small By Isabella Vanderheiden Photos by Zach Lathouris
NESTLED HIGH IN THE HILLS of Southern
Humboldt, overlooking the winding Eel River and groves of ancient redwoods, you will find Ridgeline Farms. Named for its panoramic view of the sprawling King Range, the award-winning farm is owned and operated by second-generation farmer Jason Gellman. “This is my home,” he says. “I love it more here than anywhere.” Gellman grew up in Southern Humboldt and has witnessed the evolution of the cannabis
industry. He recalls a time when farmers grew indoors or deep in the forest to hide their crop, followed by the Green Rush when the Emerald Triangle became saturated with out-of-staters moving in to make a quick buck. Then came legalization. “I was hesitant to jump into the legal side of it,” he says. “It was a scary time but it was

the right decision in the long run. There’s been ups and down, but it’s been amazing.” As a small farmer, Gellman believes it’s about quality over quantity. “I believe that’s why I win awards. I have such a small farm; I know my plants very well. I know what I feed them, I know every one of them.” Gellman says it’s important for consumers to know what kind of product they’re putting in their body but also where their money goes when they buy a product. “If one person owns a small farm that can take care of their family and help support the community, that’s amazing, but if one person owns acres and acres, it doesn’t spread around as much. When
24
HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | SUMMER 2020
they buy from a small farm, they’re not only getting quality, but they’re supporting the community.” Perhaps this is the secret to winning first place for Best Licensed Sun Grown Flower at the Emerald Cup two years running. Gellman took first place in 2018 with Green Lantern and in 2019 took first place for Ridgeline Runtz, fifth place for Ice Cream Cake and ninth place for Green Lantern. “Green Lantern is what I’ve become known for. It’s a very potent strain with lots of crystals, kind of gassy in taste,” he says. Ridgeline Runtz has become a more popular strain among growers. “It tastes like grape candy. You can smoke it all the way to the end and it still tastes great.” The Emerald Cup features cannabis products from across the state. With that in mind, Gellman says he was not anticipating a win in 2018, but when Ridgeline Farms was called up he was thrilled. “This is what I have done my whole life and to actually be recognized for it feels great. It makes my parents proud. A lot of parents maybe wouldn’t be proud that their son is growing marijuana but mine are. I learned from them; they are amazing growers.” Even so, as the cannabis industry has evolved, many small farmers are feeling left out. “We’ve been doing it our whole lives and all of a sudden someone is [considered a] professional who’s only been growing for three or four years.” This year, Gellman is growing nine different strains in six greenhouses. “It’s kind of a pain in the ass to be honest,” he laughs. “It used to just be pot, then it was Trainwreck, and now there are millions of strains.” Having new strains can be risky but that’s what makes it exciting, he says. “Do they like cold or don’t they? If it doesn’t work, I try something else. Seeing new strains and [experiencing] new smells and tastes is so exciting. It revitalizes my enjoyment of growing.” Gellman says he isn’t looking to expand Ridgeline Farms. Instead, he would rather put his time and energy into growing quality cannabis and being with his family. “I’m able to have a good life and to spend time with my wife and kids — that’s most important right now. I’m working on the brand in general, staying small and keeping the quality high.” Many small farmers have been pushed out of the industry by state regulations or corporations, but Gellman remains hopeful. “There are so many amazing small farmers in the area, I believe the best in the world. If we work together and donate to the community and all the local organizations, we can keep this going.”

Humboldt’s sustainable real estate market By Nora Mounce All property photographs courtesy of The Land Man
ESCAPING THE CITY is always daydream fodder but with the normalization of remote working, many are opening their eyes to the rural life for sale in Humboldt. Local realtors report that inventory is low but prices — and interested buyers — are growing in number. “Alternative lifestyles are on the rise,” explains cannabis industry consultant Brittney Crosby of Humboldt Compliance. With a background in real estate and development, Crosby helps property owners navigate the thick layers of red tape involved in permitting a property for cultivation. These days, she says, she’s seeing more people looking to buy their slice of the Humboldt dream — a small farm and a simple life. “Land use is huge here,” says Crosby. “I help property owners to self-certify or at least gauge what they need.” A self-identifying tree hugger, Crosby explains that the focus of her work is educating property owners on how to improve their sustainability metrics to meet compliance standards. Without state and county permits to cultivate cannabis, a piece of land might appear to be valuable on the real estate market. But Crosby stresses that both the current state of a property, including active permits and citations, and its potential, need to be reflected in pricing. “Before selling a property, everyone needs to make sure titles and owners are in line,” says Crosby, who has seen too many buyers surprised by old violations and muddy records. “The paperwork needs to be on point,” she says, adding that land bundled with an active cultivation permit is far more appealing to buyers. Sandi DeLuca of Coldwell Banker Sellers Realty has been negotiating land sales in the Emerald Triangle for 17 years. Today her focus is

helping clients navigate property transactions in the legal cannabis industry. “We used to say always check for ‘roads, water and dogs,’” remembers DeLuca. In today’s market, she explains that both parties need to research permitting regulations, state deadlines, unrecorded violations, rules around non-transferring of state licenses, sustainability metrics and more. DeLuca stresses that working with an experienced agent who knows what to look for is critical. One of the major obstacles in bringing a property into compliance is its location and topography. Historically, many Emerald Triangle farms have been tucked away on old logging roads or hidden beneath the redwood canopy on a mountainside. While such sites were conveniently covert for eluding law enforcement, today’s farm “on the hill” often means steep grades, shoddy roads, makeshift culverts and habitat encroachment — all of which need to be remedied to meet environmental regulations set by the state. In addition to abiding by regulations from multiple agencies, landowners wanting to cultivate must meet the highest standards for sustainability in California agriculture. For example, while the Department of Food and Agriculture

allows for 0.7 parts per million of the fungicide Boscalid for almond production, acceptable use for cannabis is 0.01 parts per million. Instead, licensed cultivators must utilize integrated pest management — beneficial insects, fungi or bacteria that minimize pests and diseases — and products like neem oil, citric acid and soybean oil in lieu of pesticides. “Standards of compliance are extremely difficult to achieve for the average farmer,” explains Iris Koski of Tributary Biological Consulting. The first county in California to regulate cultivation, Humboldt County passed the Commercial Medical Marijuana Land Use Ordinance in 2016 (many iterations have since been passed as well). While consultants and state agencies can help landowners come into compliance, realtors have expertise in transferring a property’s land use history into market value. “The most important characteristics that prospective cannabis buyers should look for in a potential new farm are suitability of the property for growing cannabis (e.g. exposure, topography, availability of water, etc.) and whether
32
the particular parcel is permit-able,” explains Mike Willcutt, a realtor at the Land Man office in Humboldt County. Over the years, Willcutt has worked with buyers from across the world who are interested in investing in Humboldt’s famous cannabis industry. “Most recently, I’ve been working with a couple of SoCal-based venture capital firms looking for potential entry points into the cannabis industry, either via direct ownership of farms, or other ancillary cannabis-related businesses,” he says. Despite the economic chaos at play across the globe, local industry leaders believe Humboldt County’s legendary cannabis farms — particularly those operating above and beyond requisite sustainability standards — are well positioned to hold their value in an uncertain real estate market. “People will want to live here,” says Crosby. “They’ll keep coming.”

ONE SU PORT ONE SUPPORT ONE SUPPORT ONE SUPPORT ONE SUPPORT ONE SUPPORT HUMBOLDT’S HISTORY OF CULTIVATION spans decades but adapting to state regulations and tracking and tracing every plant from dirt to dispensary is relatively new. “Humboldt has been ahead of the game on developing cannabis,” says Dylan Livingearth, solutions engineer at Backbone IQ software. “The problem was they had no computer data while manufacturing. We had a blind period in Humboldt County where [the system] was built on trust.” While trust is good, efficiency requires details and transparency. In the case of cannabis manufacturing, that used to mean calling on partners and farms to see how the batches are doing and sharing the updates over the phone. “Then we started sharing Google Sheets and decided we needed to grow up and we needed software,” Livingearth said. In stepped Backbone IQ, cooked up four years ago in 2016 by Silicon Valley engineer Rajesh

INNOVATION
Chaudry with the input of Southern Humboldt industry locals Livingearth and Peter Huson, comes in. It’s a supply chain compliance software system for the cannabis industry that helps farms and manufacturers keep tabs on their product from purchase orders to extraction to sales. Launched in 2018, it allows users to follow a visual tracker to go beyond the spreadsheets and better manage supplies going in and coming out, tracking what is ready for use in real time. It also allows users to sync lab test results to share them with other partners within the industry and organize compliance paperwork. “I call it a spreadsheet assassin. It replaces a series of spreadsheets with one centralized database,” Livingearth said. The software is independent with some third-party integration. It connects to Intuit’s Quickbooks as well as Leaf Links’ marketplace in order to find specific strains through farms and suppliers. “That combination of cannabis expertise and computer expertise seems to be a beautiful match. We didn’t look at the competitors; we looked at the problems. No other software does what we can do,” Livingearth said. Backbone’s software helps power the supply management of some well-known farms and resources in Humboldt, including Humboldt’s Finest, Redwood Roots and ArcataX. Roger Harrell, director of distribution at Redwood Roots, enjoys how Backbone both connects to Metrc, California’s chosen “seed-to-sale” system for tracking and tracing commercial cannabis, and picks up where it falters. “Metrc doesn’t let me search by farm and packages,” Harrell said. “Metrc I can search for strains but it doesn’t let me search for specific farms with those strains.” Before Backbone, he said, “There was nothing. All it was, was Mtrc and spreadsheets. Backbone has helped me get out of spreadsheet land. It’s a love-hate relationship with spreadsheets as it’s remarkable for business, but it is a lot of garbage in, garbage out.” Jahn Nicoll, director of production at ArcataX, a botanical essential oil extraction company in Humboldt, has been working alongside Backbone to develop ArcataX’s own system utilizing the software. “We went through six months of customizing and prepping for our setup,” Nicoll said. “It’s been great working with the team of developers and software engineers. They are very knowledgeable and it feels like part of a team I was involved in creating a blueprint for it.” Before shifting to Backbone, ArcataX was relying on Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. However, they outgrew it. “Our growth got so big 36
HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM
we needed processional tracking,” Nicoll said. “We make a handful of different products, so we have different processes all going on at once. We work with 50 different clients here on our side. So having this tracking system and organizational system became a necessity once we reached a certain size,” Nicoll said. Supporting that growth is what Livingearth said the aptly named Backbone aims to do. “I like to see us as there when you need us,” he said. Sergio Barrueta is a freelance writer based in Humboldt County.
“That combination of cannabis expertise and computer expertise seems to be a beautiful match.”

WHEN
QUALITY MATTERS
Here at Full Moon Farms, we pride ourselves on being one of the small craft farms nestled in the hills of Humboldt County. Being a craft farm means working with nature, respecting the land, always using organic methods and bringing you the highest quality cannabis that we can produce. Our family has been in Northern California for 7 generations, and we care deeply about our community, and give back to it as often as we can. Craft farmers have
a chance to break the traditional corporate model by putting people before profit, not always doing things the easy way, but doing things the right way — like a water neutral system that utilizes rain catchment and the use of companion plants to help with pest management and plant oil production. You can always feel good about our flowers. Come taste the difference and see for yourself why the hills of Humboldt are so legendary. – Nik Erikson
