HUMBOLDT CANNABIS MAGAZINE
2021
Success rarely happens overnight. It took generations for Humboldt County to earn its reputation for the best sun-grown cannabis. In this issue, along with connecting you with the independent farmers who keep that reputation solid (and keep hogging all those awards), we’re showcasing some trailblazers, old and new. The history of cannabis in Humboldt is long and storied. We’ll take you to the head of a historic trail running through the Emerald Triangle to educate visitors about its legacy. The Cannabis Trail nonprofit is assembling a multimedia and physical self-guided tour that, upon completion, will connect the stomping grounds of activists in the Bay Area with historic farms in Humboldt’s hills. Ready to unwind? Pull up a chaise lounge at Papa & Barkley Social, Humboldt’s first consumption lounge. We’ve got a tour of the spa-like scene from the massage spaces and local THC and CBD products by P&B and others to the outdoor lounge and its flickering fire pits, and the international menu at the Pig & Leaf food truck. You’ll want to add it to your list of spots to visit when you’re up our way.
If you’re craving a little something sweet or some entrepreneurial inspiration, check out our story on Humboldt Sugar Co., founded by a pair of women with a recipe for sugar infused with local sun-grown cannabis. Speaking of recipes, they’re sharing a couple favorites with us for using those pretty pink packets — for pea flower and strawberry lemonade, a peachy dessert and adding a little lavender to the buzz. We’ve got goodies in our swag bag, too. Our local farms and producers have you covered from the logo hat on your head to gummies and flowers to curl your toes. Flip through our Feeling Good section and see what needs to go in your bag. And, of course, in the back of the issue, you’ll find a guide to sourcing Humboldt cannabis, both by product and producer. It’s the easiest way to track down just what you’re looking for from the region that’s become synonymous with high quality cannabis grown with care and pride.

A Different Kind of Pioneer Trail A trip along the Cannabis Trail
By Hollie Ernest
THERE ARE COUNTIES across the U.S. celebrated for
heirloom tomatoes, ancient golden wheat and rich mollisol soils. Northern California’s reputation for high quality cannabis has been growing in the dark for decades. Now it’s out in the sunshine. There are so many parts to the complicated and not always pretty story of weed in Northern California. The Cannabis Trail (www.thecannabistrail.org) is a nonprofit whose goal is to develop a physical and digital map to tell the story of this region and its role in the journey of cultivation and legalization. The focus is to educate on the history and culture of the cannabis pioneers — those who first set the plant’s literal roots here in Humboldt County, as well as those who first fought for legalization in the Bay Area. This is a story told through videos, podcasts and a Cultural Competency Certification, a multimedia information module. Their mission is to create understanding of what came before, in order to more fully appreciate what it is now. The physical part of the trail is still in the inception phase, existing as sketches and ideas, with a
few concrete pillars. According to its founder Brian Applegarth, “It will have a life of its own,” as it develops. Spanning nine counties, the Cannabis Trail has been compared with the Napa Wine Trail and the Marin Cheese Trail. The nonprofit hopes to “draw travelers, history buffs, cultural connoisseurs and cannabis enthusiasts.” For those wanting immersion in the elusive fable of the Emerald Triangle, a combination of physical and digital storytelling aims to do just that. The blueprint is for the trail to be a 14-plus-hour, connect-thedot road trip weaving through six regions of “Emerald Country,” from Santa Cruz to Weaverville. The dots will be legacy cannabis farms and places of historical or cultural interest, often accompanied by a short video (possibly via phone apps) explaining the significance of that place. There are currently three official designations: Cafe Flore in San Francisco, Huckleberry Hills Farm outside Garberville and the Hemp Connection in Garberville. There are plans to add three more cultural landmarks here in Humboldt and two more

in Mendocino sometime around October. Eventually the hope is to include close to 20-30 cultural landmarks, nine art installations and many points of interest (existing signs, statues and structures). The art monuments might cover a wide range of ambitious topics, including: patient access, sustainability, community organizing, the journey to legalization, the "War on Drugs," the back-to-the-land migration north, farmer life off the grid and the role of cannabis as medicine during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These are far-reaching goals but, as Applegarth said, “This is an evolving, lifelong project ... I don’t want to rush this, I want to do this right.” On a conceptual map, the Cannabis Trail starts in Santa Cruz, paying homage to the first medical marijuana dispensing collective, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana. The trail will cross to Oakland and weave back to San Francisco, “the epicenter of the cannabis legalization movement,” according to Applegarth. It’s also where Cafe Flore resides, with its history of incubating activism with the likes of Dennis HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | 2021
Peron, known as the father of medical marijuana, and Brownie Mary, who drew attention to AIDS patient access, and was an ardent activist for decriminalization. From the city, the trail nudges you north to San Rafael, home of the 4:20 legend and its requisite statue. Next we head to the “Emerald Gateway” region, otherwise known as Sonoma County, which includes the Russian River Valley, or “Kush Valley,” stretching from the coast towards Guerneville. The trail will continue north to the Emerald Triangle, the well-known gem covering Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties. Applegarth hopes to have an art installation at the junction of all three counties. The Cannabis Trail organization is adamant about educating people on how the hippie trail and the back-to-the-land migration of the 1960s and 70s essentially brought cannabis cultivation north. Here in Humboldt County, Huckleberry Hills Farm outside Garberville and the Hemp Connection in Garberville are the two most recent additions to the trail. The story of each place parallels stories of
but plenty of time to do so over the coming years. It will focus not only on places that are important to the Northern California economy, but also the communities and individuals who have been instrumental to the progress and process. Where once there were 10-year jail sentences, there are now tourism permits and second-generation farmers. Where there were years of land degradation, there are now healthy streams and ponds, with much more restoration work to be done. Specialty strains that were bred with military helicopters overhead are now passed down to the next generation and included in top-dollar marketing campaigns via Willie Nelson. It’s been a wild ride. And more cultural history lessons along this multi-day, meandering drive are coming down the trail.

many others in the region. Huckleberry Hills Farm, owned by Johnny Casali, is a second-generation cannabis farm that suffered setbacks when Casali was imprisoned in the 1990s, serving eight years. Today the farm is the first of its kind to have a tourism license, its landscaped property welcoming outsiders and providing an opportunity to understand its crops and complex history. They have hosted several groups already and aim for more in the future. The Hemp Connection, owned by Marie Mills, was the first hemp clothing store in the United States. When Mills was challenged to remove her sign featuring a marijuana leaf, she stood her ground and won. This landmark “represents bravery, self-reliance, life off the grid and sustainability,” says Applegarth. The Cannabis Trail has a lot of ground to cover

Out Papa & Barkley Social
By Jennifer Savage • Photographs by León Villagómez
THE LOVE CHILD OF cannabis manufacturer Papa & Barkley and hospitality company Humboldt Social, the new Papa Barkley Social is exactly what you’d expect from a merging of the two local businesses: a well-designed, inviting combination of spaces where people can purchase the cannabis products of their choice and indulge in them in the outdoor consumption lounge. What’s less expected is the boutique-y day spa vibe — a deliberate strategy by the partnership to make people feel at ease when they come through the door. That they’ve managed to pull this off in a former Kmart tucked away in a part of town not exactly considered thriving speaks to the skilled design and business savvy of the Humboldt Social team. Because no matter how tasteful the Papa & Barkley signs are, the fact remains that as one drives along Broadway and turns into the mall-sized parking lot, the first impression is more of “Are you sure about this?” than “This is clearly going to be really cool.” Take heart, dear traveler! Once through the door, you’ll find yourself in a place of respite. Papa & Barkley Social concierges greet customers right away and cheerfully acquaint newcomers to their
options, which include an elegant dispensary with a sweet day spa tucked behind it, an expansive cannabis tasting patio and the upscale Pig & Leaf food truck. Take the little rolled hot towel scented with essential oils. So first, the dispensary. If you’ve spent time at Humboldt Social Club or followed the remodel of the Scotia Inn on Instagram, you’re familiar with the Humboldt Social aesthetic: a balance of space and warmth, a modern vibe with an appropriately rustic twist. The dispensary offers the deluxe version of that aesthetic, coupled with a bit of whimsy in the form of “The Nest,” an Instagram-ready botanical art installation. The space’s brightness speaks to how far the cannabis-buying experience has come, more Whole Foods than head shop. As for products, consumers can choose from the Papa & Barkley flagship line, Social Nature — Humboldt Social’s own line of cannabis products — plus options from Sunrise Mountain Farm, Emerald Queen Farm and Dewpoint, all three sun-farmed, family-farmed and women-owned. The “spa” is really just a few massage tables and chairs divided by hanging curtains, but even

part of the menu — aka salads — but I was pleased to discover multiple veggie options including Thaistyle pickled vegetables and delicious vegan jackfruit wraps. No matter which options or how many you indulge in, the boutique will likely catch your interest on your way. Full of the staff’s favorite CBD, jewelry, and health and beauty products, the curated collection of locally made goods provides all kinds of ways to extend, and remember, what Papa & Barkley’s Founder and Executive Chairman Adam Grossman calls an “elevated cannabis experience.” Finally, while stretched out in the lounge, blue sky overhead and the air fragrant, I thought of a dear friend of mine who lives in San Diego. She’s been a cannabis aficionado since high school but, as an adult, she tells me she longs for exactly this kind of experience. Those of us lucky enough to live in Humboldt are used to showing visitors the best we have to offer, indoors and out. I’ll add this to the list when she visits.

in the limited space, options are many and nothing about the experience feels cramped. I opted for a 25minute stretch with massage therapist Nicole Fryer, who maneuvered my legs into various positions to increase flexibility. Even sans optional THC add-ons, I left the session more bendy than I entered it. The appeal of the spa is twofold. For regular cannabis imbibers, the combining of wellness experiences is long overdue. For those new to the cannabis scene, the spa offers familiar services, helping to provide a foundational comfort zone. This is also true for the consumption lounge, where posh outdoor seating borders fire pits under broad umbrellas — the only thing missing is the glimmering hotel pool. Reservations aren’t required but can be had for $40 per hour per booth. Large party? Best to plan ahead. After all, this is the heart of the experience, the most popular attraction: the opportunity to smoke, indulge in edibles or partake of a cannabis beverage with the same freedom bar patrons have for centuries. Purchase your indulgences of choice in the dispensary or bring your own (a $20 minimum is required either way). For those less interested in that sort of mood-altering, another form of pleasure is offered in the form of Pig & Leaf’s menu. As a pescaterian, I assumed my options would be limited to the “leaf”

icine go down — exactly half a teaspoon. Inside Humboldt Sugar Co.’s eco-friendly pink and white packaging are individual doses of raw sugar infused with 5 mg of THC from sun-grown Humboldt County cannabis. For founders Jessica Ricker and Cara Rasmussen, the concept was simple: Create a product that allowed users to take dosing into their own hands, then package it in a way that celebrated femininity and the softer, sweeter side of the cannabis industry. Humboldt Sugar Co.’s history is rooted in the intersections of Ricker and Rasmussen’s lives. They’re moms, they love food and they are, of course, cannabis enthusiasts. After moving to Humboldt, attending Humboldt State University and dabbling in various levels of home growing, they crossed paths at their kids’ preschool in 2009. A fast friendship developed between moms and kids alike, and within just a few years, the early concepts of what would become Humboldt Sugar Co. were born. Ricker and Rasmussen say it all started with a joint while watching Bong Appétit — a cannabis cooking show and the inspiration for many an infusion experiment — back in 2014. The episode featured cannachefs making infused desserts and the proverbial light bulb turned on. With legalization on the horizon, they dreamed of legitimizing their love for cannabis and could think of no better partner with whom to start that venture. The road to infused sugar was long, with twists, turns and a few roadblocks along the way. The ladies infused, baked and ate their way through ideas in the name of “research and development.” One early idea was to make a take-and-bake brownie mix but consistent dosing post-baking proved a challenge. After more trial and error, they decided to take a step back and reassess their goal of keeping it simple, keeping it sweet and promoting custom dosing for their consumers. They ultimately decided to scale back their idea to its simplest but most versatile form: infused sugar. By 2020, with legalization well established, Ricker and Rasmussen had racked up years of research with a game plan ready for California’s exploding cannabis market. They decided their sourcing and branding would stay true to Humboldt and its roots, sticking with sun-grown cannabis with minimally processed raw sugar and

recyclable packaging, to boot. They applied for and received their license, found a kitchen in Willow Creek, and got down to business. Business, as it turned out, was glamorously chaotic. They donned white lab coats with their names embroidered in pink, then the researching, purchasing, and sweet-talking of kitchen machinery ensued. After early attempts to form the sugar into cubes or other pressed shapes and discovering their fragility in transit, the ladies decided to package loose sugar with the help of a machine they affectionately named Oscar. On Oscar’s bad days, mechanic Rasmussen sidles up to him with tools in hand to put him back in his place, and on his good days, he pumps out enough sugar that the ladies have real Lucy-and-Ethel-in-a-candy-factory vibes trying to keep up. Ricker and Rasmussen’s first eight months as an official business have been a whirlwind of growth. Their first appearance in a dispensary was at Eureka’s Heart of the Emerald. Now Humboldt Sugar Co.’s infused sugar can be found in 18 dispensaries in Northern and Central California, including most dispensaries in Humboldt County. Their debut as a brand sponsor on the Humboldt event scene was for a 420 Celebration at Forever Found Humboldt. Now, they’re spending summer pounding the Los Angeles pavement trying to break into the Southern California cannabis scene. The Humboldt Sugar Co. ladies are already making strides toward the next evolution of their brand. Along with expanding their dispensary presence across California, they are experimenting with new ideas for products and sourcing. New edibles are in development, including cotton candy, suckers and sour-sugar sticks, with an emphasis on new dosing options for consumers with higher tolerance. They plan on expanding to bulk sales of their infused sugar to other cannabis companies serving up sweets, too. Sourcing efforts remain high on their list of priorities for future changes to the company. Currently, Humboldt Sugar Co. uses distillate, the most popular edible ingredient, as its THC source. Ricker and Rasmussen have plans to move to a recipe featuring a full-spectrum tincture to make the high even sweeter and deeper with the sought-after entourage effect from the full expression of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. They’re also seeking the perfect single-source sugar supplier to partner with, as well as developing options for sugar substitutes to include consumers with dietary constraints. The ladies are currently busy plotting to pay homage to the core communities their brand represents – women in cannabis and Humboldt. Along with an all-women committee of likeminded cannabis professionals, they’re planning a community event (set to launch when COVID-19 restrictions loosen) where women-owned businesses within the Emerald Triangle can come together, network and sell their products. “We think showcasing the talent and creativity of women in our community is important. [This event] will create a space where people can come together to enjoy a variety of products and services crafted by women, for everyone,” says Rasmussen. For them, banding together to build up women in the industry is the sweetest of highs, outside of their sugar packets, of course.

Fresh Peaches with Honey Lavender-Infused Whipped Cream Serves 3 INGREDIENTS: Fresh peaches 1 teaspoon local honey 3 packets Humboldt Sugar Co. sugar (5 mg THC each) Fresh or dried lavender ½ cup heavy whipping cream DIRECTIONS: Chill a metal bowl and set aside. Heat the heavy whipping cream and lavender in a pot. Steep for 10 minutes, then strain out the lavender and chill the cream in the refrigerator. Add the honey and contents of the Humboldt Sugar Co. sugar packets to the chilled bowl. Add the chilled heavy whipping cream. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Peel and slice fresh peaches, and arrange them on a plate. Top them with the honey lavender whipped cream. If you like, drizzle the peaches with additional honey and garnish with fresh lavender.
Lavender-Infused Sugar INGREDIENTS: Fresh lavender Humboldt Sugar Co. sugar packets (5 mg THC each) DIRECTIONS: Place a few sprigs of fresh lavender in a jar or bowl. Cover the lavender with Humboldt Sugar Co. sugar and let it sit for 24 hours to infuse. Serve ½ teaspoon at a time for a 5 mg THC dose in coffee, tea, lemonade, whipped cream and more.
Butterfly Pea Flower Strawberry Lemonade For a little extra, roll the wet rim of each glass in a packet of Humboldt Sugar Co. sugar prior to muddling your strawberries. Just don’t forget to eat it while you drink. Serves 3.
DIRECTIONS: Boil the water and steep the butterfly pea flower tea in it for 5 minutes. Strain, then chill the tea for 1 hour. Muddle 2 strawberries in a tall glass. Fill each glass 2/3 full with ice and lemonade. Stir in the desired number of Humboldt Sugar Co. packets (5 mg THC each) in each drink. Pouring slowly and gently over the back of a spoon, float the chilled butterfly pea flower tea over the lemonade. The tea will react with the acid from the lemons and will become more purple as you stir it. Garnish with a strawberry and serve with a reusable straw.
