A Great Spot for a Picnic

14

The spring rain has eased off, the sun is out and the grass is lush — Humboldt is picnic primed. Pack up a basket and a blanket, and let’s go. How about a bluff overlooking the sea? Maybe a riverside location or a view of Humboldt Bay? “Shipwrecks, Rivers and Railroads” will show you the way to some of the most scenic places to spread out a blanket, uncork and unwind. In this issue’s Perfect Trips, there are even more al fresco options, from the massive redwood Picnic Tree to an oyster bed tour with sampling from the sea. Back in town, take in outdoor art on a mural tour through Eureka, peruse Native American basketry and Victoriana at the Blue Lake Museum, or visit the Humboldt Room, where history buffs swoon over the collection and the view of the bay. Speaking of collections, in Just Browsing we’ll swing by the Scruffy Nerd Herder and thumb through the racks of comics with the hardcore aficionados. And just so you don’t feel like you don’t know anybody, we’ll introduce you to local

Natalie Arroyo — city councilmember, Coastie, musician and menace on the roller derby track. (Nothing Photo by Mark mckenna says Humboldt like having layers.) She shares some recommendations for having a good time on the North Coast that you should definitely take. In the event of rain, which has been known to fall on our green landscape, there’s always Wildberries, with just the market patio on which to take shelter and sustenance. And when night falls, you can score a table at French fusion restaurant Le Monde or a coveted counter seat at Sushi Spot. We’ll even help you order. And if you’re in the mood for some whisky and blues, we’ll take you down to one of our favorite seaside bars, the Vista Del Mar. See? We know all the spots.

DON’T MISS IT:

CHECK OUT:

Arcata Bay Oyster Festival: June 16 Shuck and slurp your way through the fruit of our local waters with every recipe for oysters you can imagine and digest to the sound of live music all day.

Humboldt Bay Botanical Garden A ramble through the grounds is both a relaxing stretch of the legs and an education in local flora and even fauna.

May Day Artisan Festival: May 5-6 The Blue Ox Historic Village fills with music and oldtimey artisans, including blacksmiths, weavers and potters. Bring the kids.

Eureka’s Waterfront Trail People of all abilities can enjoy this newly completed portion of a trail along Humboldt Bay that will eventually connect all the way to Arcata.

Nora Mounce loves living in historic

and beautiful Eureka, where she runs a vacation rental from her Victorian home and indulges in domesticity and DIY projects. Her perfect Humboldt day is a run in the redwoods with her husky, antiquing with friends and enjoying a pot of soup and local oysters for dinner. 4

Deidre Pike migrated to foggy Humboldt County from balmy O’ahu in 2012. She’ll never leave. She’s been a reporter, mom, editor, granny, campground manager, author of two books, dog owner, amateur ceramicist and assistant journalism professor. She loves to drink wine and hike lost coasts and redwood forests.

Natalie Arroyo’s Humboldt Favorites: For the outdoors: Eureka Waterfront Trail

For eats: Humboldt Bay Social Club’s Lobby

(Arroyo likes to pick it up near Blue Ox Millworks, 1 X St., Eureka). Sequoia Park and Sequoia Park Zoo (3414 W St., Eureka) are gems for families and adults alike. The 67-acre park has walking and biking trails situated among redwoods. In the summer, look for live theater on the grounds. Arroyo said the zoo is one of the longest-running little zoos in the country and meets high accreditation standards.

Bar is a must for anyone who wants to grill their own oysters and watch the sun setting over the dunes (900 New Navy Base Road, Samoa). Esmeralda’s has tasty chile rellenos (328 Grotto St., Eureka). Brick & Fire has a snazzy mushroom cobbler (1630 F St., Eureka).

For music/arts/films: Outer Space (1100 M St., Arcata) has tons of shows, community workshops, as well as great live music. Richard’s Goat (401 I St., Arcata) has house-made spirits, bitters and shrubs, plus Humboldt-made snacks; it also houses The Miniplex, which screens award-winning independent films and documentaries. Siren’s Song Tavern (325 Second St., Eureka) is another of Arroyo’s favorite spots for live music.

For lodging: The Inn at 2nd and C (139 Second St., Eureka) is a boutique inn housed in an Eagle House Victorian in Eureka’s historic district. It’s also a live music and entertainment venue.

spring/summer 2018

For spectating: Humboldt Roller Derby — check out the local all-female teams at their monthly, free public scrimmages at Redwood Acres or six games throughout the season (3750 Harris St., Eureka). The Kinetic Grand Championship Race, an annual three-day moving sculpture race, attracts thousands to Humboldt County every Memorial Day weekend (this year May 26-28). Arroyo calls it the closest thing to “Humboldt County Mardi Gras” (www.kineticgrandchampionship.com).

For laid-back drinks: The Shanty (213 Third St., Eureka) has an eclectic vibe with cheap cocktails plus ping pong and pool tables. Ernie’s (608 A St., Eureka) is a small neighborhood spot for drinks and darts.

One place that has special significance to her is the Eureka Waterfront Trail, the newly completed 6.3-mile contiguous trail that runs north from Herrick Avenue to Tydd Street. “Since I’m the president of the Humboldt Trails Council, play roller derby and skate outside to work out, plus I am in the Coast Guard and on Eureka City Council,” Arroyo said, “the trail is a convergence of all these things.” Miami-born and Florida raised, Arroyo moved to Humboldt when she was 22. She came to work as an AmeriCorps National Service member with the Watershed Stewards Program in Petrolia after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and botched her plans to attend graduate school at Tulane University. The detour became a life-changing adventure. “I had never lived anywhere so rural,” Arroyo said. “It took only a few months to fall in love with the community.” Twelve years later, she proudly calls Humboldt home and is deeply invested professionally and personally. She’s lived in Petrolia, Arcata and, for the last 10 years, Eureka, where she bought a home in 2013. “Eureka neighborhoods have in-

credible Victorians and Craftsman homes on par with other cities like Portland,” Arroyo said, and it’s “more affordable than other coastal cities in California.” And, she said, “not everything cool has been done yet up here.” For newcomers moving from bigger, more diverse cities, there can be some culture shock. “Demographics are shifting and more people of color are in the county,” she said. “The trend in

the last few years is so noticeable. … It’s exciting to have new communities here.” Arroyo thinks it’s the people, culture and our natural environs that make Humboldt special, including “a live and let live culture that’s very rich,” she said. “It has an outlaw quality to it. There are a lot of people here marching to the beat of their own drum. It’s nonstop fascination.” As for the landscape, she said, “The natural beauty here is so breathtaking. Here we can go to the beach, the trees, the outdoors and it won’t be packed with people.” In 2014, Arroyo, then 29, was elected to the Eureka City Council — the first Latina to serve on council (she is a proud Puerto Rican). At the time she took her seat, and for two years after, she served on an all-female city council, one of few in the country. She now serves as representative to Ward 3 (following Eureka’s recent redistricting). Arroyo holds many titles and positions in the community that reflect her environmental,

artistic and athletic interests, some notable ones include: senior planner with Natural Resources Services division of Redwood Community Action Agency, lecturer at Humboldt State University (she teaches environmental conflict resolution), and as a marine science technician with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. She also proudly adds her 2011 Rutabaga Queen G-Ma title, member/ vocalist of the all-female band Blood Gnome and one-woman musical act Smilebright, and roller derby player with Humboldt Roller Derby to the list. True to Humboldt citizenry, she personifies eclectic interests. “I’m a lot like my dad and try to do new things. He ran marathons around the world — but in costume,” Arroyo said. “He was also heavily into public service.” How she manages: “I like to do a lot of things. I like to have a lot of plates spinning,” she said. “I’m not rolling in the dough but it is exciting to me. I feel like I’m living my dream life.”

in any couple’s romantic montage. Picnics also appeal in the later stages of the relationship, when the new parents discover the exhaustion of wrangling children into restaurant booths. Not that a picnic requires a companion of any kind: Eating a sandwich with nothing but the crunch of a potato chip to distract you from your solitary thoughts can be a perfect way to enjoy a stunning vista — and it may earn you some envious glances from the parents who are shepherding their children down the trail. However you choose to enjoy your picnic, if you are looking for easy access day trips that offer extraordinary views, then these spots are sure to satisfy.

Fleener Creek Overlook This is a gorgeous bluff perched on the edge of the Lost Coast Headlands. The road out to Fleener Creek rambles through green fields, arriving at Centerville Beach on the coast. Turning up to the headlands, you’ll pass under a white cross which leans precariously over the road. The cross commemorates the SS Northerner shipwreck of 1860, when the captain ran his ship aground in an attempt to save the lives of his 108 passengers and crew. Locals risked their own lives to rescue the survivors, helping to save 70 out of the 108 aboard. Upon reaching the turnout and stepping onto the bluff, one cannot help but be awed by the vast, windswept view of the ocean, so delicately laced in white surf and yet powerful enough to

swallow ships whole. Crab fishermen, who still grapple with the ocean every day, ply their pretty white boats upon the horizon and far below, a farmhouse appears as tiny as a toy, with its fields backed right up to the gray sand. Enjoy the expansive vistas at the picnic table provided upon the bluff or, if it’s too windy, head down the steep trail to the more sheltered beach below. To Get There: Start in the town of Ferndale and turn onto Ocean Avenue, which becomes Centerville Road. Continue on this road for 6 miles until you see the Bureau of Land Management sign for the Fleener Creek Overlook trailhead and parking lot. → humboldtinsider.com

The Fortuna Riverwalk The ultimate in quick exit, easy-access picnicking. The parking lot is steps away from the picnic tables, which are sheltered under an arbor with a view of the Eel River bending toward the sea. A great place to set up a hibachi, followed by a walk scented with wild fennel and adorned with an

abundance of imperturbable cows. The elevated trail is well maintained and perfectly flat, with occasional opportunities to make your way down to the river’s edge. This is the place to go for a leisurely picnic under a big sky — or merely to enjoy a quick stretch of the legs. To Get There: Take the South 12th Street exit from U.S. Highway 101 and head west to the River Lodge Community Center. →

The Eureka Waterfront Trail The trail has been the source of a lot of excitement among locals since it has opened up stretches of bay that were previously inaccessible. The newest section begins at the edge of the Eureka Slough and leads back towards the Eureka Waterfront. Start at the slough — once used to float massive redwood logs to mills on the bay — and watch as geese swoop to land among the egrets foraging in the marshy grass. Not only does this section of trail offer several benches on which to picnic, it also offers the chance to walk on abandoned railroad tracks: Step up onto the railroad bridge and follow the splintered ties right out over the bay. Look over the side and watch for drifting jelly fish. A seal just may pop up and return your curious stare. Continuing westward along the trail, you’ll pass the stooping, ancient stumps of piers gathered together like old men standing knee-deep

in the bay, with seagulls roosting in their mossy hair. The sound of lapping water will accompany you as the prickly masts of Eureka’s working harbor appear in the distance. At the base of the brick amphitheater, there are picnic tables perfect for popping open a thermos. You can head into Old Town for a cup of coffee or perhaps continue on the Humboldt Bay Trail as it skirts the edge of the bay. With this newest addition, it’s now possible to travel by trail from Eureka Slough to Hikshari’ Trail, which is just opposite the entrance of Humboldt Bay. But that’s a distance of approximately 6 miles, so just be sure you’ve packed a picnic hardy enough for the journey!

To Get There: From U.S. Highway 101, turn south on West Avenue, then take a left on Tydd Street. Look for the entrance of the trail just before the Eureka Community Health and Wellness Center.

Spring/Summer 2018

Above: Captain Sebastian Elrite leads a tour. Rocky Arroyo

Renowned for its plump Pacifics and tasty Kumamotos, Humboldt Bay is the oyster capital of California. Some twothirds of all oysters consumed in the state originate here, harvested using the latest low-impact sustainable techniques by hardy water farmers. Among them is Aqua Rodeo’s Captain Sebastian Elrite, a laid-back, brawny fellow — sort of a Robert Redford if he were an outside linebacker — who pilots small groups in his boat around the oyster beds. During low tide tours with the captain, you can harvest your own mollusks in the mud flats to eat fresh from the bay or to take into Old Town Eureka, where a number of kitchens will prepare them for you. If the tide is high, just hold. You can head over

to Humboldt Bay Provisions especially on Shuck a Buck Tuesday evenings, when Elrite or one of his crew will personally pop the oysters out of their shells and serve them raw or cooked in a variety of tasty manners. As big tree hunters plumb the depths of Redwood National and State Parks to find monster specimens, hidden in plain site is one of the most photogenic champions: the so-called Picnic Tree, an old growth giant next to the campground of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It’s been featured in travel magazines and websites, but few who pass notice, on the edge of a pleasant picnic area, just a few steps from the Prairie Creek visitor center, this massive vertical spire, whose

sprawling roots flare around its base like the foot of a prehistoric mastodon. Nearby, old stone grills covered in moss add to the prehistoric charm. Should you eat here among the giants, there are plenty of picnic tables from which to choose. And you can work off the meal with a stroll on the Revelation Trail, an easy mile that showcases more mammoth trees. While technically inside Redwood National Park, most of Bald Hills Road looks like anything but a primeval forest. Rather than foggy groves, the area is dominated by sunny prairies, with occasional clumps of oaks, once grazed by sheep and cattle. The grassy hillsides, with panoramic views of the redwood groves below in the Redwood Creek valley, offer perfect

places to picnic, especially in the spring when wildflowers like purple lupines spring up everywhere. To start, from U.S. Highway 101 just north of Orick, turn east on Bald Hills Road, pass the signs for the Lady Bird Johnson and Tall Trees groves, and ascend into what looks like a scene from The Sound of Music. Three suggested lunch stops: Dolason Prairie, which includes a 9-mile trail for the ambitious; Schoolhouse Peak, which at 3,097 feet is the highest point in the park, and the old Lyons Ranch, whose original barn and bunkhouses are intact and worth exploring. The first is 11.5 miles from U.S. Highway 101. The last two, which require a few miles of unpaved road, are just shy of 18 miles from the highway. → humboldtinsider.com

Foodies Walk into either Hole in the Wall shop and enter an aroma wonderland. The justbaked breads, the quality meats, some hot, the fresh veggies and condiments, all flying into wraps and sandwiches perfectly protected in wax paper blankets, compel one to bark out an order at the counter as soon as possible among the din of the locals, who vote this the best sandwich shop year in, year out. After ringing up, the two questions that remain are 1) whether to

split the oversize creation with a friend or save half for dinner, and 2) whether to eat it immediately at the picnic tables outside or take it to a scenic spot for a car or outdoor picnic. Hungry? The five-meat Italian combo will do the job, maybe for a week. Having served up lunch subs for more than four decades, Deo’s Sandwich Shop has amassed quite a loyal following in Henderson Center. He upped the game, revamping the kitchen, remodeling the counter area, and experimenting with no frills-evening service — grilled cheese and Tater Tots — for the hungry at Dave’s Place, a neighborhood bar that shares a wall and pass-through window with Deo’s. Perhaps the greatest addition, his perky, cheerful mom runs the register and serves up the baskets. Seating is limited so consider carrying out your order into the great big outside world of picnics. The warm, spicy, smoky pastrami comes highly recommended. So, you’re heading north on U.S. Highway 101 from Eureka for a Redwood National Park adventure and you realize you’re going to burn more calories on the trail than your weak little granola bar can handle. What do you do? The Murphy’s Market run. Stop in Trinidad at this popular independent local grocer, pick up Humboldt made products, like Henry’s Olives, Dick Taylor Chocolates and Humboldt Fog cheese, and order up great sandwiches. Bonus if you request the Dutch Crunch bread. If you’re not heading that direction, Murphy’s has four more neighborhood locations, all with full-service delis. Another bonus (bonuses? boni?), in the summer, the deli crews fire up their grills for barbecue in the parking lot.

Art Lovers Dozens of outdoor wall art creations grace historic buildings throughout Eureka, consistently ranked among the top 10 in John Villani’s Best Small Art Towns in America, in styles ranging from tasteful classicism to oddball impressionism. Vintage cars. Galloping horses. Sea monsters. Aliens. A Tokyo traffic jam. Humans with giraffe and parrot heads. Other notables include a giant ballerina on the back of the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts, California’s tallest mural north of San Francisco. It’s by Duane Flatmo, a celebrated artist and Burning Man regular whose other murals tend to the zany side, such as the nearby “No Barking Allowed,” a riot of deranged dogs. Find them all in Old Town and downtown. For a mural map, visit the Eureka-Humboldt Visitors Bureau office or site. One of the strangest art installations anywhere has gone to seed. And that’s good. Renowned artist Peter Santino’s “All

Happy Now,” an outdoor hilltop maze-labyrinth-ziggurat overlooking Humboldt Bay, has delighted visitors to the Humboldt Botanical Garden since its completion in 2008. Unfortunately, the turf and earth mound creation suffered from all the wear and tear. Fortunately, some months ago, Santino and friends managed a complete upgrade of the living art, replacing the original redwood bender boards with steel strips and reseeding the grass, which, thanks to our wet spring, has grown back gloriously. While only 100 feet wide, the maze’s ramped interior spiral stretches to 1/4 mile, giving a respectable 1/2-mile workout to anyone who strolls or trots the roundtrip. Of course, slow going maximizes the meditative benefits, fast going the aerobic ones. Take your pick. Giants, clowns, puppets and comics congregate in Blue Lake every summer for the Mad River Festival, a zany tradition hosted for four decades by Dell’Arte In-

ternational. But the renowned theater ensemble and school of physical acting does more traditional Italian improv. Its staff and students also create outrageous costumes and traditional commedia masks, which you can see during the fest, at other performances throughout the year, or on display in their Blue Lake campus, headquartered in a beautiful circa 1911 Oddfellows Hall. Should any of the neoprene or papier mache creations exhibit lizard-like qualities, don’t be alarmed. Dell’Arte’s most celebrated mask maker on the faculty, Bruce Marrs, played the title role in the 1997 version of Godzilla. The fest’s five weeks of nonstop entertainment takes place midJune to mid-July. Keep an eye on the clown talents too, as many join Cirque du Soleil. Santino's “All Happy Now”. Although it has been owned and cared for by the Humboldt Arts Council for many years, the statue was first sponsored by the Commercial Fishermen’s Wives of Humboldt through community donations. The statue was erected on Woodley Island and dedicated in 1981. If you’re standing near the water in Old Town Eureka, it can be hard to miss the Woodley Island Marina. On it, tourists and locals can see recreation centers, shops, restaurants, a lighthouse, and of course, The Fisherman. To visit The Fisherman up close, head out to the island via CA-255 Northbound (which is also called R Street in town) and exit at Startare Drive.

Romano Gabriel Sculpture Garden – 315 2nd Street Eureka Endlessly detailed and highly arranged, the many pieces in the sculpture garden come together to make a tableau of sorts. Although it may at first appear chaotic, the garden is actually intentionally set up to showcase smaller sculptures in front and bigger sculptures in back, creating a sense of depth and energy.

This unique folk art collection originally appeared in the artist’s home on Pine Street in Eureka. It was built over nearly three decades, slowly accumulating until Gabriel’s house was almost completely obscured from view. In the 1980s, The Ray Vellutini family of Eureka purchased it from the estate, and twenty year old Vince

Vellutini, sometimes aided by friends, spent almost a year restoring it. It was then relocated to 315 2nd Street in Old Town Eureka for preservation and restoration. After many years of careful work, the sculpture garden is now a vibrant surprise to passersby on Old Town’s busy 2nd Street.

With the Kids Should your familial lunch club be bigger than most, say, 10, 20, even 30 people, there is a picnic table or two for you and your kin. Twin monster slabs of redwood, between 30 and 40 feet long, have welcomed gatherings for decades in the Women’s Federation Grove of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, just off the Avenue of the Giants. Some locals in the know escape here in the summer, trading the coastal fog for the warm Eel River Valley. After a repast, they might take a dip in this gentle, sandy bend of the river (check local conditions before a swim, the river can be dangerously swift and cold in spring or too low in autumn). For an added treat, walk across the seasonal summer footbridge over the river to the heart of the Rockefeller Forest, which at 10,000 acres is the largest single stand of old growth redwoods. For a dune with a view, or more precisely, a view like that of R2D2 and C-3PO when

they land on Tatooine, check out the mother of all Humboldt dunes, a sprawling, 1 million-cubic-yard sand mountain barely contained by the Ma-le'l Dunes. Managed cooperatively by the Bureau of Land Management and the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge, this federal preserve features rare coastal plants and animals, a spooky skeleton forest and, once one trudges to the top of said dune, panoramic views of ocean, bay and inland mountains. Look for beach strawberries, sea rocket plants and rare Humboldt Bay wallflowers (don’t pick), or crisscrossing tracks left at night by foxes, skunks and raccoons. The southern unit, which permits horses and dogs, opens daily. The northern one, which offers more direct access to the monster dune, is open weekends. If you’re going to paint the town red, and black and yellow, and so forth, might

The Humboldt Room, on the second floor of the county’s flagship library, overlooks a pretty expanse of the bay, delighting those who happen to be there perusing historic Humboldtania; nautical maps, genealogical records, a random whale bone, snapshots and postcards with giant redwoods, logging trains and the rugged men and women of the 19th century Redwood Coast. Asian fusion, anyone? The energetic menus of the Sushi Spot in Arcata and McKinleyville boast more than 100 offerings from shooters to nigiri to curry to tempura. Several items incorporate flavors of California’s North Coast like oysters, fresh Dungeness crab, smoked albacore and — members of the Trinidad mustard cult rejoice! — Larrupin mustard-dill sauce. Turns out Humboldt’s a fine place to get mixed up.

Le Monde 2850 F St., Eureka 707-798-6499 Le Monde Restaurant in Henderson Center on Facebook

From space, the Earth appears a disc of energy in greens and blues, frosted with cloud action. Zoom in to street view and there’s Le Monde restaurant, Henderson Center, Eureka, California, where silver lights descend from the ceiling like shooting stars forever fixed at the moment of explosion. Scents of spice and sizzling butter waft from the kitchen. Rectangles of garnet ahi, edges charred, arrive artfully arranged atop dark greens. My seared ahi salad ($15) is topped with a solar orange mass of deep fried yam threads. My husband and I sit by the window, sipping the house Côtes du Rhone ($8), and watching the world go by on F Street. Le Monde is French for “the world.” In Paris, it’s a renowned newspaper. On the North Coast, Le Monde is a fine dining establishment in the space formerly known as Zoë, across from the Toy Box. Locals may remember owners Alex Begovic and Soleil Deknatel, who run Uniquely Yours Catering, as the folks who ran long-closed Hurricane Kate’s in Old Town. A few menu items reflect those République Française roots. For starters, there’s succulent French onion soup topped with crostini. Instead of rich tangy Gruyere, the soup’s topped with Swiss and parmesan. My husband Dave orders the soup ($5/cup; $9 bowl) because we’re on a lifelong quest in search of the perfect French onion soup. I ordered a seared ahi salad because culinary fusion is Le Monde’s thing. Dave enjoys his soup, yet he eyes my salad. We swap. He notes the tastiness humboldtinsider.com

of the tamari/sesame dressing and the firm cool fish. I savor the soup and order a grilled cheese. Le Monde’s grilled Brie with bacon and thinly sliced apples ($10) impresses me as simultaneously decadent and nutritious — warm, rinded cheese is a centrifuge for naughty bacon but also healthful slices of crisp apple. Of the bread choices proffered, pick house-baked French for the win. Crumbly crust, light inner crumb. The power of bread compels me. Also house-made is the flakey crust on Le Monde’s pot pies ($10), savory pastries packed with chicken, beef or mushrooms. The ultimate comfort food. All things fusion extends to Le Monde’s dinner menu. Though the menu changes monthly, exotic ’round-the-world cuisine might include cauliflower bites baked tandoori style ($10), Thai tomato soup with coconut milk ($8), bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin with maple syrup glaze ($18) and housemade ramen noodles with miso broth, shitake mushrooms, peas and carrots — vegetarian ($15) or with wild prawns ($24). Who’s racking up frequent flier miles now? At the end of any meal, Le Monde is the go-to joint for crème brûlée ($7). You can enjoy the glorious Tahitian vanilla, of course, or the brulee of the day, which happened, for us, to be coconut. humboldtinsider.com

Salt, here’s tang. Release the endorphins. Bring on the fish. Sushi Spot in Arcata, a stone’s throw east of the plaza on Ninth Street, is the mother ship for Sushi Spot McKinleyville, opened in 2013 by owner and creative sushi genius Eric Stark. “Every time I’m here, I just love it.” So says a Blue Lake artist friend blissing out with me at the Arcata sushi bar. The compact Arcata location lends itself to convivial conversations as you peruse the offerings, while in the McKinleyville branch, you can ponder your options gazing into the tropical fish tank in the center of the dining room. salmon nigiri ($5.75) — a flavor mesh of tangy rice and tart citrus. Sushi Spot makes several place-based rolls with a North Coast vibe, like the Trinidad ($9.25), with its plentiful helping of smoked albacore, avocado, green onion, and Larrupin Swedish-style mustard-dill sauce. “I don’t like mustard,” says my daughter, reading the online menu. “But Larrupin dill isn’t mustard.” Fresh Dungeness crab headlines the Kani Crunch ($15.95), with tempura prawn, eel sauce, chili miso sauce, green onions and masago in supporting roles. My top house roll pick, though, goes to the Klamath ($11.95), with wild salmon katsu, avocado, seeds, dynamite sauce, green onions and tempura crunchies. Dining on sushi is like ingesting “pure helium for dinner,” writes food reviewer Troy Johnson. “As if a burdensome part of you dislodges, turns into a mist, goes away.” My family calls this a sushi high. That’s how we feel as we consume every bite, debating our favorites and planning our next order. Left: The Tokyo Mule. Below: The Kani Crunch Roll.

DRINKS ON THE WATERFRONT Eating and imbibing at Vista Del Mar

By Grant Scott-Goforth Photos by Amy Kumler Styling by Lynn Leishman

The unassuming bar, located at the corner of Commercial and Waterfront streets south of Old Town Eureka, is tucked between commercial fish packing plants, facing away from an unremarkable part of Humboldt Bay. But despite the name, you’re not here for the view. →

Step inside and you’re welcomed to a cozy space that feels like something forgotten: a working person’s bar. You’re as likely to hear a ’00s hip-hop mix as a Johnny Cash album in Vista Del Mar, and DJs and events fill out the work week’s nightlife. You’ll find a shuffleboard table, a billiard table in the back room and several strategically placed TVs around the place, in case you want to catch a Giants game or episode of The Bachelor while you unwind. Vista Del Mar can range from mellow to raucous but the space absorbs the sound surprisingly well. You can find respite in a corner table or belly up with the after-work crew at the long wooden bar. You’ll find a friendly bartender there, too, and an extensive 22-tap beer menu that offers a wide array of IPAs, half a dozen brews on nitro taps, Humboldt Cider Co. ciders and even Lost Coast Brewery’s root beer in case you’re driving. Expect to see area favorites like Redwood Curtain Brewing Co., North Coast Brewing Co., Mad River Brewing and Lagunitas rotating in. There’s a solid tequila selection but liquor-wise, the Vista hosts a whisky crowd that enjoys the basics on up to Blanton’s. Don’t expect to leave Vista Del Mar hungry. Maybe best to not make any plans for the rest of the night, in fact. Appetizers come out in heaps and entrees look constructed to refuel someone climbing off a fishing boat. The Cubano sandwich has a devoted fanbase, as do the nachos. But fried food is why you come. Onion rings come out piping hot, the size of old fashioned doughnuts. The house-made jalapeño poppers are engorged with cream cheese, with a nice crunchy breading. This time, the peppers were medium-mild, but be prepared for scorchers – also, these jalapeños are beasts, more like the size of Anaheim peppers. Page 67: Bacon cheeseburger on a homemade bun. Purists will raise their eyebrows at the fish tacos, but the tartar sauce and soft tortilla work well wrapped around battered and fried fish. The firecracker shrimp, swaddled in panko with coconut and almond, are a particular treat. They’re expertly breaded with a crisp cook and just enough sweetness to complement the shrimp and whatever pint you chose to wash them down. Don’t be misled by “firecracker” — they’re not spicy, though digging into the accompanying pico de gallo will give them some tang. If you’ve got any room left, glance at the twoitem dessert menu. Both the Oreos and cheesecake are served deep-fried, naturally. Based on prior, judgment-impaired experience, deep-fried Oreos are unnaturally good — light, warm and gooey. But don’t take my word for it. This is your moment.

Geeking Out at the Scruffy Nerd Herder By Nora Mounce Photography by Amy Kumler Styling by Lynn Leishman

72

humboldt insider

Winter/ Spring 2018

As a kid, John

Coombs loved nothing more than Batman and visiting game shops. Growing up in the cow town of Fortuna, he was mostly out of luck. After graduating from high school, Coombs hatched a plan to start his own game shop, joining the Navy to earn the startup cash. After working on submarines for five years, Coombs was ready and returned to his wife’s hometown of Eureka. He joined forces with equally passionate nerd/business partner Noah Brock, and the pair opened The Scruffy Nerd Herder in 2017. (Yeah, that’s a riff on a Star Wars quote.) For the comic book-loving kids — and adults! — of Humboldt County, it’s a new home away from home. “We’re about 70 percent comic books and 30 percent gaming,” explain Coombs. Though he didn’t start playing Magic the Gathering until opening the Nerd Herder, Coombs is hooked. Each week, the shop hosts Magic Night Thursday, staying open as long as

players are still awake. On the last Saturday of every month, the shop stages a video game tournament, setting up card tables in back and selling soda, snacks and candy to fortify the contenders. If the business model is built on having fun, so far, the nerds are killing it. “We’re doing better than we expected. The foot traffic in Old Town is amazing, you can’t beat it,” says Coombs. In the front windows of the shop, a life-sized robot and roaring dinosaur welcome customers inside. During Arts Alive, local artist Paige McClurg, who created the window displays, sketches live charcoal drawings for visitors. In the future, board game nights and more D&D (Dungeons & Dragons, for the uninitiated) events are in the works. For info on events, movie nights and comic book new releases, follow the Nerd Herders on Facebook or stop by Old Town to say hello.

Just north of Trinidad, Patrick’s Point State Park calls, with stunning vistas, traditional Yurok structures and the appropriately named Agate Beach. Farther up, Orick is the hub for plenty of trails and camping possibilities. Start at the Kuchel Visitor Center, staffed by the National Park Service, and pick your Redwood National Park adventure, whether it’s the epic Tall Trees Grove, the dreamy Ladybird Johnson Grove, the Skunk Cabbage Trail or the must-see wonder of Fern Canyon.

Spring/Summer 2018

Trinidad In the charming town of Trinidad, Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the smaller Memorial Lighthouse and take in the view and the sea air. Trinidad Art Night fills the little town with music, food and local artwork every first Friday of the month, and the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

Located in the Six Rivers National Forest, the town’s motto is “river fun in the mountain sun.” Willow Creek is hot enough for wine making or a cool dip in a Camp Kimtu swimming hole. The weather also means great produce at roadside stands and local restaurants. If you’re adventurous, you can throw on a vest and do some river rafting, and more leisurely types can fish the Trinity River or play a round of golf. Just keep your eyes peeled, because this is Bigfoot country. Swing into the China Flat Museum to explore the lore and take a selfie with his 25-foot redwood likeness.

Blue Lake Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can generally find truth and relief in Blue Lake’s motto: “sunshine and sea air.” Where the Mad River takes its final stretch toward the Pacific, a small community of 1,200 displays an international reach. Once sawmills ruled, but now the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater imports students from around the world to learn the craft of commedia dell’arte and perform dramas and old-school clowning year round.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are up creating — maybe even take a piece home.

Home to Humboldt State University, Arcata is a magnet for arts, culture, entertainment and education. Hike the Arcata Community Forest or play among the big trees in Redwood Park. Cruise the plaza for Saturday's farmers market or a festival. Go from locavore to exotic in the restaurants and cafés. At night, the bars, theaters and restaurants are stages for live music for every taste — from big name performers to hometown legends. The music spills into the streets and shops and restaurants turn into galleries during Arts Arcata!, the second Friday of every month.

Eureka This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts! Alive, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

Ferndale There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

R LE TO AT M

Whether it’s a gorgeous summer weekend or a wet, socked-in Tuesday afternoon, Humboldt County’s Avenue of the Giants doesn’t disappoint. Known by locals as “the Ave,” this 31-mile stretch was formerly part of U.S. Highway 101 until a more direct route was developed in 1960. As automobiles and logging trucks left to zip along the main highway, the Avenue of the Giants remained as a historic relic and a glimpse into slower and simpler times. The coastal redwoods that have grown quietly for centuries in this pocket of the world are as enormous and enchanting as you can imagine. The One Log House in Garberville lets visitors check out tree-house living in a 7-by-32-foot log chamber that once toured the country before retiring alongside 101. Farther down the Ave are short, well-marked loop trails suited even to the novice hiker. Or, you can stretch your legs in the forest at the F.K. Lane Grove on a 15-minute stroll under the dense redwood canopy. Bring extra layers to stay warm in the shade and leave Fido in the car — dogs are not allowed on trails. If your timetable allows for recreation and you come during summer, a splash in the Eel River will cool you down, as will the quaint shops and cafés dotting the road selling cold drinks and ice cream. Those hankering for more refined refreshments can taste local wines along the avenue; keep your eyes peeled for signs around Redway. Finally, if your visit isn’t complete without navigating your car through a tree, stay alert around Myers Flat and you’ll pay a small fee for the bragging rights. The Ave offers visitors a chooseyour-own-adventure experience — any drive along the road grants views of some of the region’s most beloved trees and is peppered with nostalgic gift shops and historic logging towns.

South of the Avenue of the Giants lies Garberville, where you can escape the coastal fog, enjoy warmer temperatures and hit the farmers market for a treat. The little town has a surprisingly robust nightlife scene and a wild and beautiful landscape of hills and forest that you can sample in Tooby Memorial Park. Check the calendar and see what’s playing at the Mateel Community Center in neighboring Redway — the venue regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, including Reggae on the River.

Garberville Rotary Club Celebrate Humboldt Green Week. Native species planting and lunch. 12-1:30pm. Tuesday, April 17. Healy Center Redway.

Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal coming and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination.
