Coffee Break Get Creative — Don’t let the lumberjack vibe fool you — Humboldt is one artsy county. Hey, some of those lumberjacks are also painting landscapes and making chainsaw sculptures, after all. In this issue, we’ll take you on a tour of local arts and crafts and introduce some of the fascinating people who make them. Take, for example, Eric Hollenbeck of the Blue Ox Millworks. The master craftsman not only knocks out world-class architectural pieces but has turned the mill into an alternative school and a way to reach out to fellow veterans. It takes a special breed — not to mention wild imagination, engineering know-how and sheer grit — to take on the Kinetic Grand Championship. Read up on the history of the people-powered sculpture race over land and sea, which started right here in Humboldt. You’ll get a peek at some wild and wonderful contraptions and plot your long weekend spectating along the route to the finish line. In our Perfect Trips section, you’ll find community arts nights and galleries to explore, and plenty of natural beauty among redwood groves. Little (or big) fans of SpongeBob SquarePants can even check out the places that inspired his creator,
former Arcata resident Steve Hillenburg. Come on, you’ve got to take the kids to the burger joint where he flipped patties, right? Catch a movie at the old Minor Theatre while you’re in town, too. The architectural blast from the past has been a part of Humboldt culture since 1914. Does craft beer count as a craft? If you answered yes, a trip to The Siren’s Song Tavern is in order, whether during the afternoon for a pint from the vast menu or the evening for a painting class, a poetry reading or a punk show. Of course, if the weather is nice, you might have that beer out at the Fieldbrook Market and Eatery, along with some home cooking and live music. And if you love the classics, we’ve got a couple dinner suggestions for you. There’s the Hotel Ivanhoe, a Ferndale institution housed in a restored 1875 hotel and saloon, where you can get a gloriously thick steak, and La Trattoria, an intimate farm-to-table spot for rustic Italian. elers can savor a cup of Ramone’s house-roasted coffee before they depart or the moment they return. While Meyer and Ferguson love to travel as well — France, Mexico or wherever they’re running a marathon — Meyer explains, “We’re Humboldt people. We’re not going anywhere.” The summer after college, Meyer wasted no time starting her business with former partner Barb Jewell (née Berkemeyer) and Tom Pagona of Tomaso’s Specialty Foods. Located where Café Nooner sits today, the trio called their restaurant Ramone’s Opera Alley Café after Remo, a local Eureka street character recognizable by his faux leather and chapeau. Meyer walked around the linen-covered tables each night, displaying a large silver platter of her house made desserts to every table. After a few years, Pagona moved on to his next entrepreneurial endeavor and the two women brought in French chef Jean-Louis Hamiche (now of Blue Lake Casino) to cook dinner. Meyer remembers that until he started baking baguettes, she’d walk to the bus station twice a week to pick up fresh sourdough from San Francisco. “We still use his mother’s recipe from France,” remembers Meyer with a laugh. By 1986, Ramone’s opened its second location — still in operation — on E Street in Old Town. As the business started to expand, Meyer credits Dennis Rael of Los Bagels for putting her in touch with a consultant who introduced them to fastpaced world of Bay Area restaurant auctions. “To this day, we can’t resist a good deal,” says Ferguson. Meyer used the Bay Area shopping trips to also expand on her baking prowess, taking a few classes and staying at her mother’s, which was conveniently located near the world-famous Cheese Board Bakery in Berkeley, California. “When I started, I could make a muffin but I didn’t know how to bake bread,” says Meyer. Collecting tips from generous chefs and bakers, Meyer would make the long drive home with a new buttercream recipe or chocolate glazing technique in her back pocket. In 1989, Dennis Rael made another life-changing introduction when he invited both Meyer and Ferguson to a potluck. Both active in the Humboldt culinary scene, they had already spotFall/Winter 2018

profile ted each other at Ramone’s or the North Coast Coop, where Ferguson was a baker. Married within a year — they just knew — the couple’s wedding guests cautioned the love birds against their plans to bring Ferguson into the business. “People asked if we were afraid to be together every day at home and at work,” says Meyer. “We couldn’t imagine anything better!” After a year, Ferguson joined Meyer as the co-owner just as Ramone’s was getting ready to open a third location. With another person to share the load and answer the phone when catastrophe struck, Meyer gave birth to their first daughter in 1993. She remembers lying on her bed with her newborn and three staff schedules spread out across the bed. People kept telling her to take time off. “Yeah, yeah,” she’d reply. But as the business continued to grow — today Ramone’s offers catering, bakes custom wedding cakes and roasts its own coffee beans — Ferguson handled most day-to-day operations, giving Meyer time to be a mother and “stay in the mix” in the bakery. While Meyer and Ferguson both believe in hard work, their life outside of Ramone’s is rich with their meditative hobbies, travel and family. Between them they have 10 marathons under their belts and Meyer has ridden over 4,000 endurance miles on Tezona, her horse of 22 years. “Our typical evening is to toast a baguette in our little countertop oven, put out a little cambenzola and salami, and open a bottle of wine,” says Meyer. The couple keeps an orchard and chickens at their rural home and laugh when talking about the kitchen they’ve been remodeling for 10 years. For all their accomplishments, the couple is most proud of their two very artistic daughters, the employees they’ve kept for 10, 15, even 20 years and the community vibes at their most successful location, Ramone’s Café on Harrison in Eureka. “It’s a place where people can bring their kids in, a place where people can talk to each other,” explains Ferguson. “We’ve tried to create a bridge for the community.” Fresh coffee and good baguettes are certainly something everyone can get behind.

A Humboldt Hike Worth the Drive By Megan Bender Photographs by Mark Larson
Fall is a beautiful time to put on a few layers and explore Humboldt County. One must-see hike is the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Nature Walk Trail loop, which lies just 4 miles north of Orick. To get there heading north, take the first right turn outside of town onto Bald Hills Road. Continue for 2.6 miles. Be ready for a steep and bumpy ride until you see a trailhead sign and small parking lot on your right. Once you’re parked, head onto the trail. The Lady Bird Johnson Grove loop begins with a bridge that crosses over Bald Hills Road. The bridge is the first worthy stop along the trail and is very popular in the local photography scene. Take a second to snap some shots. Just past the bridge is a trailhead kiosk with pamphlets to take and return (or keep for a $1 donation). Along the trail are numbered markers that match with descriptions in the pamphlet. The pamphlets also provide some historical and ecological information on the grove for a self-guided tour. A little more than half a mile into the hike you’ll find the site that First Lady “Lady Bird” Claudia Johnson visited in 1968 for the dedication of Redwood National Park. In 1969, Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson officially named the grove after the First Lady to honor her for her environmental advocacy. The giant redwoods found along the trail vary in size, shape and character. Some are scarred and hollow due to wildfires. Others appear to have split themselves into two or three different trees; you can see multiple giants sprouting from the same trunk. Feel free to walk into and explore the hollowed, charred trees. Along the path are some smaller unofficial trails that lead into the forest and to more fascinating giants. They’re easy to follow back to the main trail if you keep track of direction. This nature walk can be as long or as quick as you make it and requires only comfortable clothes and shoes, at minimum. Unfortunately, for this hike you’ll have to leave the pup home. The trail is a part of Redwood National Park and unless you have a service dog, pets are only “allowed in developed campgrounds, on beaches, at picnic areas and roads,” according to the National Park Service. The drive up the coast to the trail alone will take your breath away but upon visiting Lady Bird Johnson Grove, you will understand why it was made a historic site. Walking among these old growth giants is truly a once-in-alifetime experience.

Perfect Fall Trips You can enjoy a steaming cup of coffee with plenty of local attractions here in Humboldt County. Whether you’re into creatures or creature comforts, there are a number of adventures that will satisfy your interest in both. For example, after howling along with spider monkeys and gibbons, you can quench your thirst at the Eureka zoo café with tea or coffee. Bonus — free refills. You can sprinkle fish food nuggets to giant carp before ordering a cappuccino at Pierson Building Center's garden or look for otters on the Eel River before an afternoon tea in the Benbow Inn. Then, for those really committed, repast at the Bigfoot Café in Willow Creek before launching an expedition to the most hallowed ground in Bigfootdom, the Patterson-Gimlin Bluff Creek film site. For

Foodies Those accustomed to a quick cup of Joe might wonder for a second why the coffee at Café Brio occasionally takes longer than a New York minute. Waver not. Art Lovers Holly Yashi, a national jewelry manufacturer, makes its home in Arcata’s hip Creamery District, so naturally it serves up free espresso to those browsing its gift shop or design studio. That perk is on the house. Holly Yashi’s award-winning works are handmade in small batches. Many of the earrings, necklaces and bracelets feature niobium, formerly named columbium, a rare metal that bursts into brilliant shocks of colors with a crafty electrical trick. On the floor, you might bump into co-founders Holly Hosterman and Paul Lubitz, who is known to dress as Santa Claus around the holidays. That reminds us — besides Holly Yashi goods, the shop stocks hundreds of preciously pretty items, including home, décor, cards, books and gifts from other Humboldt artisans. Next up were commercial district buildings, their walls giving up their monochromatic modalities for muralistic multicolorisms. With the Kids Feeling like a potted plant with the fam? No better antidote than the Pierson Building Center. (Look for the Big Hammer from the highway). Stop at the counter, ask for a cup of fish food and enter a paradise for pipsqueaks, who can visit a pond with giant koi (thus the food), search for hidden ceramic dinosaurs and alligators, pet lazy store cats, explore hot houses with cacti and succulents, and — not that we recommend this at all, for the clerks’ sake — stick their hands in bubbling water fountains. To pay for this guilty pleasure, parents should purchase a few plants — maybe one of the zillions of ornaments in the holiday shop — or stop in next door at the Pierson Building Center and splurge on the mini-outlet of

HAMBURGER HEAVEN at

The Burger Joint, one of Arcata’s newest casual eateries, knows exactly what it is. After all, it’s right there in the name. The restaurant’s relatively simple menu is welcome in this culinary era of inventive one-upmanship. Located behind the Arcata Co-op (835 J St.), in the former site of the restaurants Harvest and 3 Foods Cafe, it offers ample outdoor seating and an airy, high-ceiling indoor dining area. The physical space is your introduction to the Burger Joint’s many pleasures. It is spacious, bright and relaxed. Part burger stand, part restaurant, you order from a big blackboard menu at the register and then make your way to an open table. The decor is winking (note the big print of Jules from Pulp Fiction biting into a burger) and the hall to the patio offers a couple of arcade games, including, yes, the classic “BurgerTime.” The Burger Joint is the latest in Arcata’s long-overdue embrace of outdoor seating. has sturdy picnic tables and a fenced-in patio area, which offers a sneaky people-watching experience in addition to your meal. While the menu is focused, it provides some range. There are four signature beef burgers, four sandwiches, a few salads, an assortment of deep-fried sides and some noteworthy house favorites. First up, the corndog ($6), which boasts a rich, crusty house-made batter. It’s cooked to a delightful dark brown crunch that gives way to a sweet and soft-but-not-crumbly bite. You can also choose your dog — a Nathan’s All Beef Frank, veggie dog or andouille sausage. Splitting one of these with your party makes for a good The Burger Joint appetizer. The Burger Joint’s fried 835 J St., Arcata goodies are well worth the 707-630-5144 clogged arteries. The onburgerjointarcata.com ion rings ($4) are massive, Open Thurs.-Mon., with the same thick battery 11:30 AM-9 PM texture as the corndogs. Sweet potato fries ($4) and nicely seasoned curly fries ($3) come to the table hot out of the fryer, and the thin-cut french fries have a nice salty bite. You have the option to order them smothered in house chili and cheese ($8) — and you definitely should. While you may not be inclined to go to a place called the Burger Joint and order anything else, the owners are proud of their Chicken Cobb Salad ($14), which is adventurously topped with a fried egg. The sandwiches also don’t disappoint. The Fried Red Hot ($14) is another battered success. The fried chicken is crunchy and tender with a combo of Frank’s Red Hot and bleu cheese that invokes Buffalo wings. The Salmonid ($15) is a juicy filet of salmon on a bed of arugula, topped with a creamy tartar sauce and a sprinkling of capers. The buns are toasted and soft without being damp and doughy. This signature sandwich is a satisfying alternative to the beef patty. I assume that, like myself, you’re going to the Burger Joint for hearty, old-fashioned beef burger, so I figured you’d only read this whole thing if I buried the lede. My eating companion is hooked on the Backwood ($14) — a patty adorned with a thick slab of bacon, Loleta cheddar cheese

and a generous helping of tangy, sweet barbecue sauce. Be sure to grab extra napkins if this choice strikes your fancy. The Juicy Lucy ($13) patty holds a little pocket of melted American cheese that temptingly oozes out after the second or third bite. If you’re feeling a little more traditional, you can get the Shroomy ($14), which is covered in sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese or the Classic burger ($11), a perennial favorite. If you choose to “build your own burger,” you have access to a variety of cheeses, sauces and toppings ranging from jalapeños to fried eggs. The possibilities are endless. What’s a burger place without a $5 shake? Cool off from that late Arcata sun with a few classic flavors or one of the daily specials. Or perhaps you’d like to sip on something more adult-oriented? The Burger Joint gets extra points for being adjacent to Arcata’s best taproom and cellar, Dead Reckoning Tavern. If you’re into one-stop-shopping, however, the Burger Joint has its own great selection of bottled and draught beer, as well as local wine. As they say, there’s nothing quite like a burger done well.

hef Alex Begovic of Le Monde — voted Best Restaurant 2018 by North Coast Journal readers — shares his recipe for a holiday dessert. In Europe, it’s traditionally served with crisp, spiced brown sugar speculoos cookies and chocolate sauce. But consider a sauce of cranberries or a little whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon and nutmeg.

DIRECTIONS Whip the cream into firm peaks using an electric mixer. Cover and refrigerate. Dissolve the gelatin with 1/4 cup cold water, using a whisk in a heatproof mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip the egg yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar on high speed until the mixture is thickened and pale yellow. In a small saucepan over high heat, bring 1/2 cup of milk to a boil. Pour the hot milk over the egg yolk mixture while stirring constantly. Transfer this custard mixture back into the saucepan and bring just to a simmer over medium heat and continue stirring constantly until smooth. Remove the saucepan from heat and pour the custard over the prepared gelatin. Stir vigorously with a whisk, making sure that the gelatin is completely dissolved. Whisk in the pumpkin purée and vanilla. Let cool on the counter for 15 to 20 minutes. When the mixture has cooled, use an electric mixer on high speed to beat the egg whites with 1/2 cup of sugar until firm peaks form. Using a rubber spatula, fold half of the egg white mixture into the pumpkin custard, then fold in the other half. Repeat the same process with the whipped cream.

food&drink than you’d expect a cauldron of melted cheese to be and the sweet onion and white wine bring to mind Swiss fondue. You may think you don’t have enough of the excellent warm tortilla chips but you do. Just as well proportioned is the wedge salad ($12) of butterhead lettuce, house dried cherry tomatoes, Point Reyes bleu cheese, crisped bits of pork skin and a snowfall of grated egg, over which a mild buttermilk dressing is judiciously drizzled. Everything on the menu is à la carte, giving you room to explore. An 8-ounce American wagyu flat iron steak from Imperial Farms ($24) proves the live fire is no gimmick. The char-striped meat is melting tender and the ancho chili coffee rub gives it a savory, lightly spicy crust. You could happily enjoy it as it is or alternate between the accompanying herby garlic chimichurri and the tart smoky version with chilis and smoked paprika. The Mary’s organic duck breast, aged 14 days is topped with crisp, chestnut brown skin. It’s bedded down on farro with sharp shishito peppers, sweet roasted radishes and a creamy mole verde rich with pumpkin seeds, plantains, dried fruit and cilantro. Even with its gaminess toned down by dry aging, the duck stands up to and works in concert with the contrasting flavors and textures. By Nora Mounce Photographs by Amy Kumler Only 100 miles south of Oregon, Humboldt County often has more in common with our Pacific Northwest neighbors than the 40 million sun-loving residents of Cali. We wear plaid unironically, revel in rain and find any excuse to drink another cup of coffee. Instead of sports rivalries, locals pledge their allegiance to a particular coffee shop. And for rural folks who depend on home brew — or anyone with a firm grasp on personal economics — loyalties often lie with a particular roast or blend. To understand how the perfect Humboldt cup is crafted, we went beyond the baristas to learn more about three classic Humboldt roasters. →

food&drink A Humboldt legacy brand, the Humboldt Bay Coffee Company has been located in Old Town for 27 years. Self-identified coffee nerds Thomas Carter and Luci Ramirez purchased the business in 2013 and have continued to expand their caffeinated hold on Humboldt and the entire West Coast. By focusing on roasting alone — there is no proprietary café — HBCC is singularly devoted to bean quality. While you can’t order a $5 soy cappuccino, a crew of suspiciously upbeat employees welcomes visitors daily at the retail store at 527 Third St. There, you’ll find a fresh pot of the featured coffee of the day, which guests are Humboldt Bay welcome to sample. After confessing Coffee Company to Ramirez that I frequently pop in to sneak a taste, she tells me, “We enRoasting & courage that sort of thing.” Visiting Center With a fanatical devotion to qual526 Opera Alley, Eureka 707-444-3969 ity and organics, Ramirez buys green Mon.-Fri. 9 AM-5 PM (unroasted) beans from a number of small farmers in Latin America. Retail Store While cupping score and taste are 527 Third St., Eureka most important, all HBCC coffees are Mon.-Fri. 8:30 AM-5 PM humboldtcoffee.com either USDA Organic or sustainably grown by producers too small to pay for certification. If you’re looking for the freshest coffee available, Ramirez recommends scheduling a tasting at HBCC’s roasting facility at 526 Opera Alley. There, the roasters frequently host senior groups, field trips and coffee club members. While large groups and personal tastings should be scheduled in advance, passersby can watch live roasting through the window — an activity best enjoyed with fresh cup of coffee. →

food&drink A coffee shop so iconic to Old Town Eureka they share a name, Old Town Coffee & Chocolates has fueled Humboldt with fresh roasted coffee and gourmet espresso drinks for 16 years. A gathering place for study groups and community meetings, OTCC, as it’s sometimes known, is an expansive café that many consider the hub of Old Town. Co-owners Cathy Kunkler and Gail Mentink purchased the business in 2002, retaining the focus on fresh roasted coffee, but adding “so much more,” says Kunkler. “We get artists and writers who come in, kids doing their homework. It’s nice because it’s a quiet space but also a community space,” explains barista Dyllen Anderson. The everyone-is-welcome vibes are the direct result of how the café has served the community over the years. In addition to helping Old Town Coffee local organizations raise money & Chocolates through personalized coffee or fudge fundraisers, OTCC stays 211 F St., Eureka 707-445-8600 open late to provide an all-ages oldtowncoffeeeureka.com space for people sit and talk over Open Sun.-Mon. 7 AM-8 PM, coffee — and maybe a dark chocTues.-Thur. 7 AM-9 PM, olate truffle. Roasted in Southern Humboldt for 30 years, Signature Coffee has been the brew of choice for those seeking quality organic coffees since 1988. Located a few minutes off U.S. Highway 101 in sunny Redway, the Signature Roastery & Visitors Center is a destination for tourists and a neighborhood coffee shop for locals. Focusing exclusively on drip-style coffee, owner Karyn Lee-Thomas explains they fear the sweet and creamy trappings of espresso drinks would dilute the nuance of their coffees. Roasting only certified organic beans, Lee-Thomas is also passionate about Signature Coffee buying fair-trade coffee, a regulated term that means 3455 Redwood Drive, Redway farmers are paid a just 707-923-2661 Open Mon.-Fri. 7 AM-5 PM. wage. In 2003, Lee-Thomas signaturecoffeecompany.com traveled to Nicaragua and visited farms with Women in Coffee, re-committing her business model to the financial, ecological and social bottom lines. Today, nearly all of Signature’s coffee bear the Fair-Trade label. Lee-Thomas’s personal cup of choice is Sumatra, a medium roast often served in the line-up of coffees available daily at Signature. After leaving the corporate world and the Bay Area behind, Lee-Thomas and her husband David have never stopped appreciating the beauty of Southern Humboldt living. “We’ve got redwoods but we’ve also got breweries and coffee, cannabis and good cheese,” says Lee-Thomas. “On top of all our natural beauty.” Below: Green, unroasted beans. These local outfitters offer unique selections of whatever it is you are — or didn’t know you were — looking for. In the charming town of Trinidad, Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the smaller Memorial Lighthouse and take in the view and the sea air. Trinidad Art Night fills the little town with music, food and local artwork every first Friday of the month, and the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

Located in the Six Rivers National Forest, the town’s motto is “river fun in the mountain sun.” Willow Creek is hot enough for wine making or a cool dip in a Camp Kimtu swimming hole. The weather also means great produce at roadside stands and local restaurants. If you’re adventurous, you can throw on a vest and do some river rafting, and more leisurely types can fish the Trinity River or play a round of golf. Just keep your eyes peeled, because this is Bigfoot country. Swing into the China Flat Museum to explore the lore and take a selfie with his 25-foot redwood likeness.

Blue Lake Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can generally find truth and relief in Blue Lake’s motto: “sunshine and sea air.” Where the Mad River takes its final stretch toward the Pacific, a small community of 1,200 displays an international reach. Once sawmills ruled, but now the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater imports students from around the world to learn the craft of commedia dell’arte and perform dramas and old-school clowning year round.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are up creating — maybe even take a piece home.

Home to Humboldt State University, Arcata is a magnet for arts, culture, entertainment and education. Hike the Arcata Community Forest or play among the big trees in Redwood Park. Cruise the plaza for Saturday's farmers market or a festival. Go from locavore to exotic in the restaurants and cafés. At night, the bars, theaters and restaurants are stages for live music for every taste — from big name performers to hometown legends. The music spills into the streets and shops and restaurants turn into galleries during Arts Arcata!, the second Friday of every month.

Eureka This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts! Alive, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

Ferndale There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

In the heart of the redwoods, just 18 miles south of Eureka on US Highway 101, sits “the friendly city” of Fortuna. Enjoy a hike to the headwaters or a peaceful stroll along the Eel River on Fortuna’s riverwalk. Did you bring the dog? Fortuna’s got you covered with a brand new dog park for your traveling companion. How about the kids? Hit the Depot Museum for vintage train fun and lace up your roller skates at the Firemen’s Pavilion. And every month, Fortuna’s First Friday arts night brings the townspeople out for an evening of strolling and socializing along historic Main Street.

R LE TO AT M
Whether it’s a gorgeous summer weekend or a wet, socked-in Tuesday afternoon, Humboldt County’s Avenue of the Giants doesn’t disappoint. Known by locals as “the Ave,” this 31-mile stretch was formerly part of U.S. Highway 101 until a more direct route was developed in 1960. As automobiles and logging trucks left to zip along the main highway, the Avenue of the Giants remained as a historic relic and a glimpse into slower and simpler times. The coastal redwoods that have grown quietly for centuries in this pocket of the world are as enormous and enchanting as you can imagine. The One Log House in Garberville lets visitors check out tree-house living in a 7-by-32-foot log chamber that once toured the country before retiring alongside 101. Farther down the Ave are short, well-marked loop trails suited even to the novice hiker. Or, you can stretch your legs in the forest at the F.K. Lane Grove on a 15-minute stroll under the dense redwood canopy. Bring extra layers to stay warm in the shade and leave Fido in the car — dogs are not allowed on trails. If your timetable allows for recreation and you come during summer, a splash in the Eel River will cool you down, as will the quaint shops and cafés dotting the road selling cold drinks and ice cream. Those hankering for more refined refreshments can taste local wines along the avenue; keep your eyes peeled for signs around Redway. Finally, if your visit isn’t complete without navigating your car through a tree, stay alert around Myers Flat and you’ll pay a small fee for the bragging rights. The Ave offers visitors a chooseyour-own-adventure experience — any drive along the road grants views of some of the region’s most beloved trees and is peppered with nostalgic gift shops and historic logging towns.

South of the Avenue of the Giants lies Garberville, where you can escape the coastal fog, enjoy warmer temperatures and hit the farmers market for a treat. The little town has a surprisingly robust nightlife scene and a wild and beautiful landscape of hills and forest that you can sample in Tooby Memorial Park. Check the calendar and see what’s playing at the Mateel Community Center in neighboring Redway — the venue regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, including Reggae on the River.

Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal coming and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination.
