In the Moment

Well, that was fast — we hopped over the line into a new decade in what felt like the blink of an eye. There’s a pull, at times like these, to commemorate milestones and the things that are most important to us. Admit it: You’re thinking about getting a tattoo. You’re definitely in the right place. Not only are tattoos wildly popular in our county but we’ve got some of the most talented hands to wield a needle right here in the redwoods. (And you’ll see lots of redwood tattoos, if you keep your eye out.) In this issue’s Adventure story, we’ll take you to a trio of local shops that do beautiful and varied work, from colorful Japanese designs to black and white portraiture. You’ll also meet artist Henry Krüger, voted Humboldt’s Best Tattoo Artist by North Coast Journal readers for the vintage beauties he creates for customers at his Old Town Eureka shop Sailor’s Grave Tattoo. In Perfect Trips, you’ll see why Humboldt is for the birds — all kinds of birds that draw binocular-toting birders from far and wide. Whether you’re working on your list or newly bird-curious, you can join them on an Audubon-guided walk or for the dawn geese fly-offs at the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge. We’ve also got some relaxing pastimes for you, including forest bathing among the tall trees and warming up with a hot stone massage. And there are dance performances and performance art
events to see, though the kids will likely prefer the more active visit to open gymnastics gyms for tumbling time. We’ll show you a great place to treat your palate to some local wine tasting. Old Growth Cellars — with its petite sirah, zinfandel, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir and granache rosé — may have just the bottle for you. While walking around Old Town, stop in at the lobby of the historic Vance Hotel building and treat yourself to lunch or an afternoon nibble at Bandit Savory & Sweet. And if you have trouble choosing among the freshly baked snickerdoodles and such, remember that cookies were basically made to keep in your pocket for later. For dinner, you might try Tandoori Bites, where you can warm up with some Northern Indian cooking — meats cooked in clay ovens, warm naan bread and transportive curries. Not gonna lie: It might be a little wet out. Gear up for the weather with a new pair of boots that will actually last you. We’ve gathered some great waterproof and water-resistant ones with genuine Humboldt style. After all, you’ve got a lot of walking to do. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

INK IN. THE
BLOOD Henry Krüger of Sailor’s Grave Tattoo By Collin Yeo Photographs by Amy Kumler
On Sept. 1, 1994, Henry Krüger worked his first day as a professional tattoo artist. But that was hardly the first time he had ever held a tattoo gun and given out some ink. 18
“I got my first tattoo in 1987, the day after I turned 17,” the fifth-generation Humboldt native said in a booth in his Eureka shop Sailor’s Grave Tattoo. “My great-grandparents owned a farm on the land that is now Cutten Elementary School. When my great-grandmother got ill, my grandparents rented out her house and the first couple who lived there was from San Diego. The man was a tattoo artist but he didn’t have anyone to work on him, so he taught me. I gave him a dragon on his forearm and he gave me this goat’s head on my shoulder. I was the first one of my friends who got a tattoo. Back then, you’d only see tattoos on World War II vets and old bikers.” Henry grew up as a consummate metal head and a fan of the artwork that accompanied record sleeves and show fliers. Pushead, the singer and artist from the band Septic Death, was a big influence on him. So was the graphic illustrator turned tattooist Greg Irons, due to Krüger’s early obsession with an album that his stepfather owned, Jerry Garcia’s bluegrass outfit Old and in the Way’s first self-titled record. “I didn’t care for the music at all but I just loved the cover art by Irons. It just resonated with me.” Henry didn’t take the idea of tattooing professionally seriously until he moved to Seattle to attend art school and had an epiphany from a class with the brilliant, notorious and iconoclastic artist (and contemporary of Humboldt’s Morris Graves) William Cumming. “I went to art school for two years," said Krüger. “And about a month before I graduated my class, we got a lecture from Cumming.” The teacher was late to the live figure drawing class and in a bad mood and went around the room asking everybody what they wanted to do with their work. “A lot of people said that they wanted to get into commercial work and graphic design. And
Cumming said that the best artists were the original artists, the cavemen who made their paintings without lessons or critics or anything besides their own inspiration. They just did it. After that, a bunch of my classmates just quit school, myself included. I said screw this, I want to be a tattoo artist.” Krüger eventually landed a job at one of Seattle Tattoo Emporium owner Pete Stephens’ shops and spent the next several years honing his craft between gigs in Seattle and Olympia. During that time, he discovered what he liked and disliked about the sometimes grimy world of tattoo parlors, and slowly crafted a vision for a business of his own — one that would blend the ambience of the old school with modern cleanliness and an open layout. On July 4,
2010, he opened Sailor’s Grave with his wife Melissa Krüger. The shop is housed in an old building that has served as everything from a soda bottling plant to a jewelry store and the clean lines of the interior evoke an appreciation of history. Flash art and tools from famous artists of yore like Sailor Jerry and Danny Danzel sit in immaculate display cases amid walls of custom work and paintings. The shop seems to sit astride two eras: Modern and impeccably clean as the place is, it’s also redolent of a proper old parlor, with low-fenced booths lining the floor like stalls in an indoor bazaar from the days of steamships and ironwork. “Melissa makes all of this possible, the shop design, the books, accounting.” Henry says of his wife of 28 years. “I couldn’t do any of this

profile without her. She makes it so that I just have to show up and tattoo.” He prefers the traditional styles. “I like to do tattoos that look like tattoos.” He explains, “There are some styles that I would suggest someone else might do better. For instance, there’s a lot being done with hyper-realism. And that’s not my thing personally. I think that it can look cool, but I question the longevity of it. I like longevity.” Thematically, the only things Krüger refuses to do are racist designs: No swastikas or confederate flags. “Everyone is welcome here. I have a seriously diverse clientele. I tattoo all types of people.” His art is often very locally themed, with celebrations of redwoods, crabs and Bigfoot. It’s of-

ten whimsical and local characters sometimes influence his humorous grotesques of mermaids or boozy bar patrons. He loves the art of yesteryear, from the maritime and military world of the early-to-mid-20th century. The name of the shop itself is taken from the sinking ship motif that sailors would get tattooed as a luck totem a century ago to ward off the dangers of the sea. He has tattooed people from around the world and no two days in his shop are exactly the same. At the height of the cannabis green rush, he was booked three to five months in advance. Now his waiting time is a more reasonable three weeks, even with two other artists working in the shop, but he can also often be found accepting walk-ins.
“I get cancelations all the time so if I have time to get you in, I will. If I wanted to be selective about what I do, I would have a private studio. I love sometimes not knowing what I will be doing that day. I feed off of that. I draw everything that I do so if I don’t know what it is beforehand that’s exciting. I love it.” As a child, Krüger’s third-grade teacher told his mother that “I wouldn’t amount to anything except being an artist because I couldn’t fixate on anything else. All I did was draw.” And after 25 years of professional tattooing and nearly a decade owning his own shop, Krüger is still as enthralled with his art as ever.

Three shops for beautiful body art By Sarah Godlin • Photographs by Zach Lathouris Your nurse practitioner’s ankle, your personal trainer’s knuckles, the entirety of your contractor’s back; Humboldt is tattooed. To meet the county’s dermal demands, Humboldt has homegrown and imported a copious assortment of artists who can give you a safe, beautiful and skillfully done permanent picture on your body. Area artists have opened shop doors, creating small businesses for themselves and offering work to other artists, leaving a sea of decorated Humboldtians
in their entrepreneurial wake. If your upper arm is aching for your mother’s name written on a banner that’s softly draped around a heart, you have a buffet of folks who can make this happen for you. Photo-realistic heart? Cartoon heart? The exact heart that your 4 year old drew on your Mother’s Day card? Here are three shops you might consider for this important piece of personal art that will probably last longer than the piece over your mantle (maybe by another Humboldt artist). Vive l’art local! →

Ted, Amy, Alex and Dani Marks, Jeremy LaFlamme, Michael Joy, John Lopez and company at Nor Cal Tattoo 750 16th St., Arcata, 707-630-5077 Find it on Facebook Nor Cal Tattoo is a family joint. Amy and Ted Marks respectively pierce and tattoo alongside their son and daughter, and more than half a dozen other artists who are all like family in this traditional shop with a ’90s retro vibe in Northtown Arcata. Obviously, artists don’t all work in only one style but to give you the broad strokes: Ted enjoys portraits; Michael specializes in black and gray; James is the go-to for wildlife and space art; Jeremy does traditional pieces; Alex gets down with fine line work. If you’re looking for permanent makeup, like ombre eyebrows or microblading, Marisha Ramerez has you covered — it's a service the shop recently started offering. “We are pretty excited to add

this service,” says shop owner, Amy Marks. “It seems to be getting popular in bigger cities.” Though they’ve been tattooing in the area since 2007, the members of the Nor Cal Tattoo family are newer on the block in Northtown, around the corner from Stars Hamburgers. Something that isn’t new, though, is their hosting of the Inked Hearts Tattoo Expo in Blue Lake for the past 11 years. “Most say it’s their favorite tattoo convention to work,” says Amy Marks. Nor Cal gladly accepts walkins and would be the perfect place for a matching tattoo with your best friend or a redwood up the forearm — a Humboldt County fave. I don’t have any tattoos by the folks at Nor Cal … yet.

Luis Lopez and Dan Rena-Dozier at Primal Décor 1908 Myrtle Ave., Eureka, 707-445-2609 www.primaldecor.com Located in the most adorably modified Myrtletown cottage, Primal Decor looks like a tattoo parlor in the evil elven section of a video game. The shop is centered around a gorgeous jewelry collection for stretched ears and piercings, services they also offer. The staff has a passion for extreme cleanliness at Primal and they take their compliance seriously. It’s evident in the framed certificates around the shop. Luis Lopez, voted North Coast Journal’s Best Tattoo Artist of the year in 2017 and 2018, specializes in the black and gray style. His background in photography inspires his tastes. “It used to be harder to make photo-realistic tattoos because there was one color,
black, and you had to try to shade the rest with dots. Now there are color palettes of gray, and it makes detail possible. And more fun to do.” “Dan [Rena-Dozier] also does photo-realistic but in color,” says Lopez. The two are the tattoo portion of the Eureka shop, the longest continually running body art shop in the county, “Making moms cry since 1995,” as they say. But these days it might be because she is so impressed with the gray-scale of her son’s chest rocker of her face. Full disclosure: I have a tattoo by Luis and though it’s just lettering, it’s one of my favorites. →

which he has been internationally recognized. Brian’s been tattooing in the area since 1997, making carp twist, feathers fan and peonies bloom. And yes, there might be a wait — a small price to pay for a tattoo that will still stun on your 90th birthday. Kaneko’s talented, bespectacled shop mate Nick Hunt, has an equally cool but different art vibe all together. He took up an apprenticeship under Brian years back after graduating from HSU with a well-deserved studio art degree. If you want a winged cobra, he’s your man. If you want a frog riding a skateboard, he’s your man. If you want to meet your grandpa when your grandpa was
young and cool, he’s your man. “The shop’s homey, welcoming, relaxed but still professional,” says Hunt about the Northtown Arcata house-turned-studio. “Also there’s really nice natural light and a ton of windows. I love tattooing here.” Their frequent guest artist — another HSU art grad — is Hannah Wednesday, originally of San Francisco’s famous Tuesday Tattoo. Her style could be described as Norwegian/Western/carved wood, and her Instagram is busting at the seams with very satisfied customers. More disclosure: I’m happy to say I have more than a few tattoos from each of these talented artists.

Perfect Winter Trips By Richard Stenger
Don’t be a fool. Do the cool. Season, that is. Late winter and early spring delight the hale, hungry and healthy who harken to Humboldt’s call of the mild. For those seeking birds by land, whales by water and forests by bathing (read on, forest bathing is a thing), we have the guides to take you. Afterward, fuel up with oysters on the Avenue or SpongeBob’s favorite milkshakes. Then land on the dance floor or watch aerial artists dance suspended from the ceiling. No doubt all that moving and eating about will make you pine for a rock solid relaxation stop, which you can take at the neighborhood spa with hot stone massages. And about those children — they need to exercise their minds and bodies. So march them to the Eureka library for story time and drop them off at open gym happy hours, which, as you may notice, gives parents an evening free. Now go forth and gratify.
Outdoorsy Type Birds of all feathers flock to Humboldt County, in particular Humboldt Bay, the second largest such body of water in the state. Our bay serves as the permanent or migratory habitat for some 2 million birds each year. Super fly venues to give the avian experience a lift include the Aleutian Geese Flyoff, when thousands of cackling honkers take off in the morning from the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge, where the gates will open 30 minutes before dawn every weekend in March for viewing. Then there’s the Godwit Days bird fest in Arcata (April 15-21), especially the Big Day, when birders often spot more than 100 species. If you can’t make either event, join a free tour hosted by the Redwood Region Audubon Society at the Arcata Marsh each Saturday at 8:30 aM. For a more personalized adventure on the wing, take a private excursion with the aptly named Rob Fowler, a professional wildlife biologist and birder extraordinaire, or ornithologist Ken Burton, another local high in the Audubon pecking order. Whether Humboldt Bay or beyond, local waters beckon those seeking paddle adventures from easy to extreme. Pacific

Not so at the Morris Graves Museum of Art at 2 PM on the second Sundays of most months, when Eureka’s cultural flagship institution hosts an Afternoon of Dance. On Feb. 9, Debbie Weist, owner and instructor of Dance with Debbie, will give slow dancing lessons for all levels. On March 15, the Irish Academy of Dance studio will bring beginners to champions of all ages to perform traditional reels, slip jigs, treble reels and ceili dancing. Afternoon with Dance performances are included with general admission ($5, $2 students, seniors and military, free for children under 18). Carl Schneider remembers what started it all: a 1946 Buick Convertible, blue with maroon leather interior, the most beautiful thing in the world, purring into his parents driveway in 1945. That glimpse started a lifelong obsession with auto memorabilia piled so high he finally moved it into a storefront in Old Town Eureka, dubbed Carl’s Car World, which he has opened to the public. Much of it is for sale at prices ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The exhibits include rare vintage race posters, miniature replica cars, “ghost machines” — automobiles that the retired Plymouth and Volkswagen dealer created and then pitched to Plymouth — and race trophies, such as one earned by Arcata legend Lou Brero more than 60 years ago while driving a Curtis Cadillac. James Dean, the favorite to win that event, died on the way to the race. The showroom is open by appointment but, starting in early 2020, it’ll also be open 10 AM to noon and 1 to 5 PM (admission $15, $10 kids, veterans and seniors). For an elevated art encounter, try Synapsis, an experimental performance collective that features silk aerialists dangling about one of the oldest, tallest ceilings in Eureka. Founded in 2004 and led by Eureka City Councilmember Leslie Castellano, the Old Town space is a hub of kinetic surreality many days of the week. Besides the high-in-the-interior-sky artists using silks, trapezes, hammocks and ropes, contemporary dancers, acrobats and physical theater practitioners give earth-bound performances, too. With advance notice and experience, visitors can take advantage of weekly classes and open aerial gym times. For a top treat, stop by during their Arts Alive presentations, the first Saturday evening of each month. →

Now the Italianatestyle landmark is home to shops and businesses, its wild days to be imagined as you sit and people watch from a crushed velvet chair in the lobby and nibble something lovely from Bandit Savory & Sweet Café. Owner Erica Davie’s café rewards a push through the glass and brass doors with the smell of espresso drinks, cookies and scones. First a pop-up in San Francisco, then a farmers market stand, Bandit makes its home in the historic lobby. Before you order your default coffee, consider the options barista Michael Rice has on offer — the cinnamon and raw honey latte, the cardamom mocha — and don’t overlook the specials board. In fact, if you’re not wedded to the idea of coffee, the possibilities expand further with all manner of fragrant loose teas, orange blossom lemonade, rose limeade and the more-casual-than-Champagne “cidermosas." On the savory end, there are charcuterie plates ($16-$20) and deceptively hefty sandwiches with cucumber and shredded carrots, like the honey maple ham and Jarlsberg on locally baked Brio focaccia swiped with Diane’s Sweet Heat jam ($8.50). Everything is better with a mimosa! Starting out with only bagels and coffee in 1984, Los Bagels is now considered a staple on the local culinary scene for everything from its bagel selection — jalapeño bagels are a favorite — to offerings such as raisin challah, lime corn cookies, empanadas and smoked salmon spread. The good news is the owners published a cookbook to share many of their popular recipes, which is in its third printing. We picked up the latest version recently and found not only great recipes, but also thoroughly enjoyed the “lore” section of the book that tells the history of Los Bagels and its original founders. We also learned the story of how NBC’s Today Show weatherman Willard Scott named Los Bagels one of the top bagels in the nation (outside of New York, of course).
INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons butter ½ cup chopped onions 4 cloves garlic ¾ cup chopped celery 1½ quarts water 2 cups corn (fresh or frozen) 1 4-ounce can of chopped green chiles ½ teaspoon oregano 1 tablespoon salt ½ teaspoon oregano ½ teaspoon cumin ½ tablespoon chili powder 1 cup milk ¼ cup flour 1/8 cup chopped parsley ¾ cup grated jack cheese Optional garnish as pictured: Green onions, sliced Serrano chili pepper and cilantro.

Punjab to Eureka The hometown flavors of Tandoori Bites By Jennifer Fumiko Cahill Photographs by Amy Kumler Styling by Lynn Leishman
At lunchtime, the row of 15 brass chafing dishes along the wall at Tandoori Bites glows, brimming with aromatic yellow rice, deep red tandoori chicken, fried clusters of vegetable pakora, dahl and, of course, a bevy of curries. Navigating these alone takes discipline. How many hunks of lamb can you manage from the pot of rogan josh and still have room for the chicken tikka masala? That the restaurant handily wins the North Coast Journal’s Best Buffet is no surprise, especially at a scant $12 for lunch. Grazing from one end to the other and pulling apart the warm, blistered naan bread, curious first-time visitors become loyal regulars. The dinner menu is a tour of popular favorites of Indian cuisine with emphasis on northern dishes,
like garlic naan bread, rice dishes and curries spiced with garam masala. But there is regional and then there is regional, and the flavors at Tandoori Bites, if not the specialties themselves, go back to the Indian state of Punjab, the district of Jalandhar and the village of Athoula, from which the restaurant’s owner Gupreet Sohl and his chef and partner Dalbir Singh hail. Sohl took over and renovated the building six years ago, adding a second tandoor oven. He first

hired then 19-year-old Singh, who’s a distant cousin, to work in his Bay Area restaurant. Singh waited tables and followed up his shift watching the kitchen staff, learning to make foundational sauces, gravies and dishes. He experimented as he went, working on his own recipes and mastering cooking techniques (sometimes with help from YouTube) until he was satisfied with the results, his own versions of classic dishes. There were (and sometimes still are) phone calls to his mother back in Athoula to ask how to make this or that dish. For example, when he was first learning to make the fresh cheese for saag paneer, “I talk to my mother,” says Singh. Sohl’s mother has had some input, too, helping Singh with his chicken curry, like the chicken kadhai with peppers and onions that is Sohl’s favorite. “Before, I think restaurant food, it’s better than a mother’s cooking. Now I think mother’s is better.” He adds with a shrug that what he cooks professionally will never compare to hers, to the labor and affection Indian women put into cooking for their families. And that’s fine. “They just work super hard,” Sohl says of the kitchen staff. The food is indeed labor intensive, with chicken and goat curries cooking for hours. “I admire them. I couldn’t do it without them.” In fact, he claims he can scarcely boil an egg himself. “I tried to put the naan in the oven and my God, it was hot.” He’s not kidding — 400 F is average temperature for tubular clay ovens in which the slabs of dough bake stuck to the interior walls. “The hook is for removing … You have to stick [the raw dough] in with your hand — that’s the only way.” To his dismay, the bread slipped from the side of the tandoor and plummeted to the bottom. Singh grins a little at the story and says that while it takes quite a bit of practice, Sohl is being modest. “He can do it,” he says. “Just not for customers.”

Trinidad In the charming town of Trinidad, Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the replica 1949 Memorial Lighthouse honoring those lost or buried at sea, and take in the view and the sea air. You can tour the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse (a working navigational aid) from 10 AM. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. In summer, the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

McKinleyville The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are up creating — maybe even take a piece home.

Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can find warm refuge in Blue Lake, a picturesque town whose motto is “sunshine and sea air.” On the shores of the Mad River, locals enjoy fishing, sunbathing and swimming in the summer, and fun hikes and bike trails anytime. In addition to fun outdoor adventures, Blue Lake is a hub for music and the arts. The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre imports students from around the world, producing shows throughout the year, including the annual five-week Mad River Festival. You can also sing along at Humboldt Folklife Festival in July, a weeklong celebration with live music, dancing and workshops. With the little ones? Check out photos and artifacts from Blue Lake’s pioneer, indigenous, logging and railroad histories at the Blue Lake Museum or visit Perigot Park, where you can play baseball or soak up picturesque views.

Eureka This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts! Alive, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

Ferndale There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, such as Reggae on the River.

South of the Avenue of the Giants lies Garberville, where you can escape the coastal fog, enjoy warmer temperatures and hit the farmers market for a treat. The little town has a surprisingly robust nightlife scene and a wild and beautiful landscape of hills and forest that you can sample in Tooby Memorial Park. Check the calendar and see what’s playing at the Mateel Community Center in neighboring Redway — the venue regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, including Reggae on the River.
The Southern Humboldt Business and Visitor Bureau invites you to experience the magic in Southern Humboldt. Check out www.shbvb.org for more information.

It’s Live Music Friday and we are thrilled to bring on stage Madrona Dawn on January 24th at 6PM. This indie soul band from Humboldt County, California is comprised of the instrumentation of classic era soul/rock: drums, bass and guitar, and fronted by powerful female vocalist, Tara Miller. The songs are original compositions that tend to evoke emotional and stirring responses. Sultry and subtly sexy, the music of Madrona Dawn pairs well with friends, drinks and beautiful nights.

Southern Humboldt
Shelter Cove Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal coming and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination.
