Rain or Shine A LITTLE RAIN isn’t going to stop our fun, not in Humboldt. In fact, folks here tend to not even bother with umbrellas, preferring to brave the weather with a hoodie and/or a hat. And our county has plenty to entertain both when the fall sun shines or the winter clouds gather. Enjoy long walks on the beach? Our coasts are gorgeous all year and we’ve got a roundup of favorites for strolling — or rolling, if you’re using one of the sand-friendly wheelchairs available for use. And in Perfect Trips, you’ll find dozens of ways to enjoy the indoors and outdoors, from rock climbing to perusing art, sampling a farmstand’s wares to hitting the trails. Avid readers and curious travelers will want to dig into some Humboldt literature. We’ve got a solid set of recommendations for fiction, memoirs, nonfiction and history by Humboldt authors from the owner of the storied Booklegger shop in Old Town Eureka. Just across the street at the Wine Cellar, we’ll take you for a tasting of offerings from around

the globe and around the county, and maybe a few oysters, too. When you’re ready to warm up, we’ll take you to the colorful Jerk Kitchen, where Jamaican cooking and vibrations will transport you to the Caribbean. (Hey, they get a lot of rain there, too.) We’ve also got some suggestions for classic sushi and ramen in Arcata at Nori, where you can settle in for sake and the chef’s omakase selection of the day. Finally, we’ll share some of our favorite local cannabis products to unwind with. And as always, you’ll find the seasonal calendar of events in the back of the issue, with updated information at humboldtinsider.com. Bring your umbrella. Or don’t — a little rain won’t hurt. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

Humboldt by the Books Recommended local reads from Booklegger’s Jen McFadden
By Cassie Curatolo • Photos by Holly Harvey If you want to get to know a place, visit its independent bookstores. A microcosm of the surrounding community, nowhere has its finger on the pulse of its residents quite like a bookstore. Booklegger is no exception. A cornerstone (its door opens literally on the corner of Second and E streets) of Old Town Eureka, Booklegger has supplied Humboldt County with carefully curated new and used titles for more than 40 years. Encased in the sweet smell of aging paper, the tidy aisles of Booklegger are a labyrinth of new and familiar worlds. Handwritten signs point to a large selection of fiction, graphic novels, poetry, YA and kids, history, gardening, art and more. One would be hard pressed to find something that didn’t spark their interest. Still, a bookstore knows its clientele, so Booklegger is stocked up on natural and local history, foraging and local field guides — Humboldt County must-haves. continued on next page →

At Booklegger’s helm is Jen McFadden, an articulate, kind and, of course, well-read individual with a passion for connecting patrons with the right book. She is backed by staff with extensive knowledge of a vast spectrum of genres and subjects, some of whom are writers themselves. “The ethos of this place is that we want to support people in whatever they want to read. We are absolutely delighted to learn about what people want to read, so we can bring that in,” she says. “We already have a point of connection with everyone who comes here because we all like to read.” Behind McFadden stands a wall of photographs, concert 402 Second St., Eureka tickets, long-forgotten notes and (707) 445-1344 other ephemera found wedged in On Facebook the books exchanged for trade — Open Monday-Saturday not such an unusual exhibit for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a used bookstore — an altar to Sunday noon to 4 p.m. the many hands through which Booklegger’s wares have passed, a tribute to kismet. On a warm fall afternoon, with her capable daughter Sophie behind the counter, McFadden sits down to share a few recommended titles by local authors. The Blacksmith Princess by Rowan Mallory is written under a pen name by a Booklegger staff member. It is a YA fantasy novel that is a retelling of Jack the Giant Slayer with a woman protagonist. “It is extremely clever and funny,” says McFadden. It has been one of the most popular books in our store since it came out. It has a feminist

slant, friendship themes and lots of world building. People are going to want to revisit this novel.” They are in luck, as a sequel is in the works. Wake Turbulence by Stilson Snow is a mystery set in a town in rural Northern California that, according to McFadden, “sounds suspiciously like Eureka.” The novel centers around a “washed up” astronaut and ex-Air Force Investigator who is asked to look into a potential murder. What he uncovers is bigger and more perilous than he could have anticipated. “[The novel] is really suspenseful and twisty … and features a lot of people with unusual paths like the kind you meet in Humboldt County.” Booklegger hosted a signing with Snow over the summer. The Hurricane Blonde by Arcata local Halley Sutton is a feminist noir thriller that follows a former child star as she becomes entangled in investigating the murder of a young Hollywood actress. The protagonist must grapple with Hollywood’s not-so glamorous underbelly and all its dangerous secrets. “It’s been extremely popular. We just cannot keep this in stock.” Both Sides of the Bluff by Jerry Rohde. “I highly recommend Jerry Rohde for local history. He has written extensively about Humboldt County before and after white settlers.” A household name in Humboldt County, Rohde is a historian, ethnographer, archivist, researcher and teacher. His other titles include Southeast Humboldt Hinterlands and many, many more. Shift Happens by Margot Genger is a memoir about an “unlikely long-haul truck driver with a complicated history. It takes place in the 1970s and is an account of that experience [as a truck driver] and
all the characters she meets along the way,” says McFadden. “It’s so original and very compelling.” Genger is a Humboldt local and a regular at Booklegger. Hiking Humboldt books by Michael Kauffman, along with “some of his other natural history books are such great resources,” says McFadden. “These have been a great addition to the local canon. He and Backcountry Press have gone out of their way to make the books accessible. Hiking Humboldt Kids is bilingual. I really appreciate what they have done to make nature accessible to the local community.” Humbook Two by Barry Evans, the latest collection by local writer, engineer, science enthusiast and all-around fascinating guy. This latest book contains essays on all things Humboldt, from flora and fauna to the linguistics of local Native languages, to the history of the area and its people. With contributions from his wife, Louisa Rogers, and the aforementioned Rohde, it will show you new sides of Humboldt County, whether you are visiting for the first time or a long-time local.

Safety: Before we stroll, a note about safety: The ocean here is often big and always cold. Do not make the mistake of underestimating its power. Check your weather app for any sneaker wave or large swell warnings, know if the tide is coming in or going out, and always pay attention to the ocean while you walk. Make sure your phone or other GPS device is fully charged. Wear layers! Humboldt’s weather, especially right on the coast, can change every 15 minutes from clear to foggy, and back again. Accessibility: Beach wheelchairs are available, too! Contact Friends of the Dunes Nature Center at (707) 444-1397 or info@friendsofthedunes. org for use in Manila, or the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust at (707) 677-2501 or info@trinidadcoastallandtrust.org for use at Moonstone Beach. Now that you’re prepared, here are three of Northern Humboldt’s most easily reached, inspirational sandy strolls.
Manila to Mad River
Much of what makes the North Coast spectacular — steep bluffs and semi-hidden coves surrounded by forest — also limits options when seeking a place for a long beach walk. The approximate 15-mile stretch between the Humboldt Bay Harbor entrance and the mouth of the Mad River may well offer the longest opportunity to trek with your toes in the sand. Maximize the experience by starting out at the Friends of the Dunes Nature Center, easily found off State Route 255 in the unincorporated town of Manila. Park at the center, stop in for a dune species identification guide, then take the trail out to the beach. Notice how the restored dunes to the north feature far more diversity than those to the south. Expect to see beach buckwheat, yellow sand verbena and beach strawberry coloring the dunes. Keep an eye to the sky for seasonal pelicans and osprey, too. Hawks of many varieties are likely to

make an appearance. The trail leads to the beach, so once there, turn north and enjoy the wide-open ocean on one side and ever-morphing dunes on the other. Logistics: The Nature Center is a can’t-miss architectural structure and has the only available restrooms for this journey. The walk from parking lot to beach is about a half mile and, once on the beach, there’s no shortcut back. Dogs: Allowed leashed on the trails and under voice control on the wave slope (where the sand is wet from the lapping waves) on Manila Beach and Ma-l’el Dunes South, but not allowed in the dunes at Ma-l’el Dunes North or Lamphere. If you bring your pup and want a walk longer than a couple miles, walk to the south instead.
Moonstone to Clam Beach Moonstone Beach is one of Humboldt’s most popular outdoor gathering spots for good reason. With an expansive beach, generally friendly

surf, opportunities to boulder and rock climb, and the mellow Little River meandering through the sand, Moonstone offers plenty. That includes walking 2 miles south to Clam Beach. Traverse south along the dunes, watching for seals, sea lions and, in the springtime, gray whales making appearances offshore. Turn around and see the majesty of Camel Rock and Trinidad Head to the north as you return. (If the tide is low and still outgoing, keep walking past the waterfall north of Moonstone and scope out the tidepools around Houda Point.) Logistics: Moonstone is just a few minutes off U.S. Highway 101 and close to both McKinleyville and Trinidad, so fueling up with breakfast or lunch nearby, or rewarding yourself with dinner, is easy and highly recommended. On a less crowded day, Moonstone offers ample parking. On busy days, you may find yourself having to walk farther than expected and down the steep, paved road to get to the sand. The only “restroom” is a por-
ta-potty — plan accordingly. Dogs: Allowed, must be under voice control at Moonstone. Once at Clam Beach, leash laws vary depending on time of year due to the need to protect nesting snowy plovers. From March to September, dogs are permitted on Clam Beach on leash only, except if on the wave slope and responsive to voice command. From October to February, dogs can play off-leash, as long as they stay within 30 feet of their owner and are kept under control.
Gold Bluffs Beach Adjacent to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Gold Bluffs Beach offers several miles of walking alongside rugged bluffs and imposing trees, a chance to marvel at the size of the driftwood and the occasional elk herd, and an eyes-on lesson in biodiversity. Gold Bluffs Beach bridges the forest sanctuary with the offshore Reading
Rock State Marine Protected Area, the northernmost in Humboldt County. This means that in addition to elk, you may see sand crabs, western sandpipers, sanderlings and other shorebirds seeking meals at water’s edge. Don’t be surprised if curious seals and alert sea lions pop their heads up among the waves. Come back in the spring and you may even see the double-plumed spout of migrating gray whales. Logistics: Allow yourself at least two hours of beach time and at least an hour on either side for the drive. From U.S. Highway 101, the journey to Gold Bluffs Beach takes about 20 minutes on Davidson Road. Also, from May 15 to Sept. 15, you’ll need a Gold Bluffs Beach/Fern Canyon Parking permit, available through nps.gov/redw/ planyourvisit//ferncanyonpermits.htm. Dogs: Allowed, must be leashed.

Outdoorsy Types Humboldt County is blessed with miles upon miles of the best fishing in America. Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss for those ichthy-nerds out there) are waiting to mess with your head, playing hide and seek as they slip through the clear waters of the Van Duzen River. A favorite of fall/winter sport fishers, steelhead are catch and release if wild, but those raised in hatcheries are fair game! Impress friends with knowing how to tell a hatchery steelhead (hint: the adipose fin has been removed) and avoid fines. Or hire one of Humboldt’s wise guides to point you to treasured fishing holes and leave the fin ID to the professionals. Hit the California Fish and Game webpage (wildlife. ca.gov/Regulations) for current catch restrictions. Thwack! Thwack! that’s the sound of Pickleball. The Humboldt Bay Pickleball League invites you to enjoy the newest game to sweep the nation. Indoor and outdoor courts can be found all over Humboldt County: Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Fortuna, Loleta, McKinleyville and Shelter Cove. Veteran-run paddlemaker Redwoods Pickleball (redwoodspickleball. com) presents demos in McKinleyville for those who want to try the sport before investing in equipment. Cal Poly Humboldt’s courts are for students, staff and alumni, but if you’re 50 and up, you can take an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute course to see if becoming a pickler tickles your fancy. Find the Humboldt Bay Pickleball Club on Facebook and humboldtbaypickleball.weebly.com for court calendars to schedule a game. Or grab a paddle and join an open game. “Be the rock!” I heard a mother implore her young son as he clung to a boulder in a state park. Start by learning how to rock climb indoors. Far North Climbing Gym and Cal Poly Humboldt have the indoor rock climbing facilities you need to learn safely. Far Rock (1065 K St., Suite C, Arcata, 707-826-9558) offers day passes and memberships for adults, veterans, students and children. The gym rents the required equipment for you to test the ropes before you free climb. Learn as a family or enroll the kids in the Spider Monkeys afterschool program so you all know an arete (vertical corner facing out) from a dihedral (vertical corner that opens like a book). Cal Poly Humboldt (707-826-3357) has two Student Recreation Centers with climbing facilities open to students, faculty and Alumni Association members with day, month and semester passes. Equipment rentals are available there, too. Get climbing and use carabiners for more than holding keys.

Artsy Types Leave it to the budget conscious Ink People Center for the Arts to introduce you to your new hobby. Pick up your pencils, paper and $10 ($5 for students/ seniors), then head down to Synapsis Union (1675 Union St., Eureka) for Life Drawing with Clinton Alley. The shared performance space gives over its stage to the artist within you on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Can you smell the pencil shavings? Perhaps you prefer charcoals? If you want to support the arts in another way, the group is always happy to have a new live model. Email clint.studio@yahoo.com or call (707) 3629392 to start your next artistic endeavor. enticing you to collect both beautiful and intense art — haunting photography, inspiring prints and ceramics designed to enthrall. Check their website (arcataartisans.com) for upcoming shows, including the anticipated winter group shows. Each member artist has a page, so you can check out their work from the comfort of home. Of course, viewing artwork on exhibit is a 3D experience. Whether you love fiber arts, a beautifully painted landscape or handcrafted jewelry, there will be something at the Arcata Artisans Gallery that you will want to take home with you. Another artists’ cooperative worthy of pilgrimage is the Trinidad Art Gallery (490 Trinity St., Trinidad, 707-677-3770). Ned Simmons bought the Riecke House with a vision of Trinidad Art, a gallery in his home. After Simmons died in 2011, the cooperative took on his mission the next year. The talent exhibited within the 1900 Italianate Victorian cottage is easy to see. Visit the website at trinidadartgallery.com for a preview. Read the artists’ biographies to get a peek into their creative inspirations. Better yet, visit in person. Be seduced by the intricate textures of a mixed media piece or a sculpture that calls out to you. Have you ever admired the delicate art of a silk painting? Now’s your chance.

Foodies If you haven’t waited in line for one of Sherry Erlei’s cinnamon rolls, you’re missing out. Sherry and Joe opened Erlei’s Bakin It (444 Main St., Ferndale, 707-786-9800) in 2019 and have delighted local taste buds ever since. Breads, muffins and pies (oh, the pies!) await. Grab a coffee, some milk and a dozen cookies guaranteed to put a smile on your tyke’s face. Stop in for a sandwich before you stroll Main Street. You can also call to order gluten free and vegan options. The cinnamon rolls roll out at 9:30 a.m. so be prepared to socialize. Hit Erlei’s Facebook page to begin salivating as soon as possible. Because pastry deserve to be worshipped. Humboldt’s bounty is on offer at Sea Goat Farmstand (1450 Hiller Road, McKinleyville). The nonprofit micro farm, an astounding cornucopia on a tiny third of an acre, provides organic produce 11 months of the year (even Mother Nature takes a break in January), Thursday to Saturday. The farmstead also sells the produce of other local growers and wares from many talented artisans. The farmstead’s Maker’s Space is a new addition where you can learn how to make sauerkraut or citrus cordials, as well as arts and crafts like printmaking. Run by project manager Megan Blumenstein and studio manager Katie Mather, Sea Goat combines the philosophy of local fresh food and sustainabil-
ity that feeds your creativity, be it soul or stomach. Visit early on Saturday to snag a coveted sourdough loaf from Humboldt Baking Co. Or volunteer and learn regenerative farming practices. Permaculture is a beautiful thing. La Mancha dairy goats raised on Bayside grass give Spring Hill Farmstead Goat Cheese (707616-1093) the cheese to make you happy. Karin Eide left the rat race behind when she decided goats were much more fun. Her care of her goats is reflected in her cheese. Take Greta, not a goat but a spreadable cheese blended with rosemary,
parsley, sage and thyme. It is a light delight on a thin cracker. Spring Hill Farmstead offers a cheesemaking class every spring (email for details). You can call to schedule a tour to see the happy goats that are born, raised, and retired on Spring Hill. Look for Eide at the Saturday Arcata Farmers Market to find out why thistle rennet is the best. Or pick up some Pepita (think organic roasted peppers), whole milk ricotta or marinated feta at other Humboldt locations like — hey! — Sea Goat Farmstand.

Not Strictly for Tourists Humboldt’s Hometown Store (394 Main St., Ferndale, 707-4960588), owned by North Coast Journal Inc., has a room dedicated to the locally raised Mayor of Flavortown Guy Fieri. Before he rose to the height of foodie stardom as the face of the Food Network, Fieri was a little Guy hawking homemade pretzels from a cart. Give your personal chef a Knuckle Sandwich — not a punch, but one of Fieri’s line of ergonomic knives. Check the Hometown Store website (humboldtshometownstore.com) for hours and other talented local makers. When majestic thousand-year-old redwoods revered by Indigenous peoples fell under the threat of logging, the fight to save the trees from the lumbermills began. Did you know Ferndale’s own Zipporah Russ (the namesake of Russ Park’s Zipporah’s Pond) donated the first 160-acre grove which led to the creation of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Nelson B. Drury Parkway, Orick, 707-488-2039)? Celebrate the park’s centennial with a visit to Joseph and Zipporah Russ Memorial Grove, the first dedicated grove in the park. You can find the Russ Grove by taking the Karl Knapp Trail Access No. 1 from wayside parking off Nelson B. Drury Parkway just north of Big Tree Wayside, or park in the lot at Big Tree and venerate the colossus before taking Foothill Trail Access No. 1 north to Karl Knapp. Hiking at McKay Community Forest (5371 Northridge Road, Cutten) is always fun, but have you tried biking it? The winding trails of Eureka’s newest park wait for you to lay down some tracks. The rolling hills are perfect to break in your new mountain bike. The park welcomes hikers, horses and bicyclists, and has some ADA trail, too. The 1,194-acre forest is a work in progress, with 4 miles of trail accessed by the Northridge Parking Area. Lessons and Blessings At Jerk Kitchen By Jennifer Fumiko Cahill Photos by Holly Harvey
Marcus Garvey is among Mitchell's heroes painted on Jerk Kitchen’s walls.

humboldt insider
The reggae playing out front is muted back in the kitchen where Jason Mitchell, owner of Jerk Kitchen, holds a yellowtail snapper in one hand, dragging a knife across its iridescent pink skin, the last scales flaking off like sequins. It’s the same kind of fish he grew up making in Clarendon, Jamaica. “I learned to cook from my aunt Lulu,” he says, solemn before flashing a grin. “And she would whip your butt if you make a mistake.” One thing he learned from her was to soak the fish in water with lime and vinegar, “to get the rawness out of the fish so it don’t taste fishy.” He hisses as a fin pokes his finger. Another lesson: “Ya don’t get burned or cut yourself, you’re not cooking.” Since buying the Eureka restaurant from fellow Jamaicans Dell Bryan and Joanne Kerr (whose photo hangs by the

kitchen doorway) last year, Mitchell has expanded the menu to include the wildly popular jerk tacos, among other things, but kept the main attractions, like jerk chicken and curry. The flavors remain traditional but adapted to local availability. “I change it based on how I feel,” he says. He’s found butternut squash, for example, is closer to the pumpkin he grew up with than American pumpkin varieties. And when Scotch bonnet peppers aren’t handy, he splits and seeds a habanero instead, smelling it to gauge the heat. And when ackee — a nutty fruit native to West Africa, imported from Jamaica and potentially toxic if harvested and prepared incorrectly — is not available for the Jamaican national dish of ackee and saltfish ($18.95, medium), Mitchell prepares the traditional snapper he learned to make

in his high school food and nutrition classes before he started his first restaurant at the age of 18. “It was a shack,” Mitchell says, arms out to trace its dimensions in the air. But in it, he says, he was able to partner with a friend and cook food to sell to his teachers, classmates and neighbors. Mitchell places half a pepper and garlic in a hot pan of oil, adding flavor and heat. Then he lays the halves of fish, now brick red with spices, into the oil to brown. In a larger pan, he starts to cook bell peppers, onions and squash. He cracks a handful of allspice berries for the pot in a bag on the counter. Allspice, a core ingredient in Jamaican cuisine, always has to be smashed, he says with a wink before sprinkling it into the pot. Finally, the fish goes into the pot with more chiles, potatoes, fresh okra and a few sprigs of thyme. “If I don’t have thyme, I do not wanna cook,” he says. After immigrating to the U.S. at 19, Mitchell began cooking in Jamaican restaurants on the East Coast. When he came to Humboldt County in 2017, it wasn’t to cook. Instead, he says, he ran a CBD business, but eventually came to feel the industry didn’t align with his Rastafarian beliefs. Then he bought Jerk Kitchen and returned to his role as a chef. Jerk Kitchen’s exterior is a bright spot on the street, the entrance flanked by a mural featuring Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Marley. Inside, mural portraits of Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman, late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie and Marley adorn the emerald green and yellow walls, each with quotations about liberation, empowerment and hope. For Mitchell, who was raised by his grandmother and great grandmother, whose own grandmother was enslaved in Jamaica under British rule, the messages are well worth the commissions paid to the artists who painted them. Ask him why he chose these figures and who he’d like to add, and he’ll happily hold forth on what they mean to him and the world at large. People come to Jerk Kitchen “not just for food, but for a lesson and a blessing. The lesson is on the wall or from my mouth, and as soon as you’re in the parking lot,” he says, snapping his fingers and grinning, “you’re blessed.” A fellow Jamaican and cook who goes by the nickname Blacka seems to agree. He has been waiting at the back door continued on next page → humboldtinsider.com

for the fish to be ready, breathing in the aroma of the kitchen. He chuckles impishly and rubs his hands together. “I know it’s good and I am patient because I am a cook.” Once his double order is in hand, he and Mitchell exchange a little banter, and he sets off, light footed across the back lot. Patience is a particular virtue in cooking Jamaican dishes. The jerk chicken marinates overnight in Mitchell’s own spice blend before going on the grill out back to cook under a watchful eye to achieve its flavorful, char-kissed exterior without burning or drying out. The stewed oxtail ($21.95, medium) and the curry goat ($18.95, medium) take hours in the pressure cooker for the meat to leave the bone with the gentlest coaxing. On a recent evening, a takeout customer drove back to tell Mitchell that if there’s an award for oxtails, he should have it. Another man reached over to drop a trio of pungent cannabis nugs the size of broccoli florets beside the credit card swiper by way of appreciation. The firm, starchy plantains ($4.95), belly-warming chicken curry ($14.95, medium), and fluffy rice and peas ($5.95) have their following, too. It’s wise to call ahead for quick

sellouts, like the oxtails and the baked macaroni and cheese, from which a fork draws an impressive cheese pull ($6.50). Served over coconut rice, the snapper has a seasoned crust for the sauce to cling to — a little heat and melded flavors to offset the white flesh and the oilier meat at the head. The okra is tender and the potatoes, too, have absorbed the fragrant broth. “All right respect, respect! Powers, powers!” calls Mitchell as one of his regulars heads out. He’s all smiles turning back to watch the pan. He says 427 W Harris St., Eureka he tries not (707) 407-0586 to cook when On Facebook he’s feeling and Instagram bad, to work @the_jerk_kitchen his way out of Open Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridayit or, if all else Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. fails, close up shop to avoid sharing negative energy. Nori’s Modern Takes On the old-school By Jennifer Fumiko Cahill • Photos by Aoife Malloney CHEF JOE TAN DOES NOT WAX POETIC ABOUT SUSHI; for him, both the style and the principles are simple. “The ingredients, the quality is most important. Sushi is really basic,” he says, but it demands the highest standards to be great. There may be no more minimalist cuisine than traditional sushi and sashimi, where there is no elaborate sauce or preparation to hide behind, only the pure taste of the fish itself and the skills to make its best presentation. In Japan, where sushi-grade fish is in every supermarket, he says, “Anyone can make sushi at home but [at a restaurant] it’s about the quality.” Of course, Nori, where playful kaiju monster prints line the walls, still serves

The goofily named Jessica Albacore rolls up spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, albacore and paper-thin lemon, served with ponzu spiked with a little heat. But the nigiri and rolls that give the flavor of fresh fish the spotlight are where Nori shines. Originally from Ipoh, a mountain town in Malaysia near Kuala Lumpur, Tan immigrated to New York City, where he worked as a sushi chef. “Then I met my wife and she told me American sushi is not the real sushi,” he says laughing. He and Nami moved to Japan, where she was born. They lived in the suburb of Chiba from which Joe CONTINUED ON PAGE 45 →

would commute to make sushi in the fashionable Ginza district of Tokyo and at an upscale kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi) restaurant inside the famed Tsukiji fish market. While his status as a foreigner kept him from moving up in the ranks, he says he learned traditional and contemporary methods, and the importance of not compromising on quality. Without the bounty of Tsukiji Market at his feet, Tan says some ingredients, like bluefin tuna and sometimes escolar and ika (squid), can be hard to come by or more expensive. On the other hand, our local oysters, which he sources from Humboldt Bay Oyster Co., are sought after even in Japan. Even with a costly piece of fish, Tan says he tells his staff to throw away any piece they wouldn’t be satisfied paying $10 for themselves. “Omakase is $25 for five pieces [of nigiri], so it has to be good … the best of the best,” he says, to keep his regulars happy and coming back. On a recent visit, the chef offered an omakase assortment of nigiri sushi featuring deep red maguro, lightly vinegared saba (mackerel) with a pinch of green onion, a scallop barely seared and brushed with siracha mayonnaise, and a fatty salmon torched and topped with ikura (salmon roe). The sashimi combination ($40) was a jewel box of 20 pieces, including maguro, Tan’s favorite hamachi (yellowtail) with a lovely ombre of pink, pale bluefin tuna, fresh salmon striped with fat, meltingly creamy escolar topped with tobiko (flying fish roe) and one plump local CONTINUED ON PAGE 47 →

The Wine Cellar Cultivating Humboldt County’s wine culture By Cassie Curatolo • Photos by Holly Harvey Craft beer and hard cider seem to be at the forefront of the libation scene here in Humboldt County. Inside, red brick walls, shelves of bottles, a handsome wraparound bar and a sleek leather lounge area reinforce the feeling you’ve been transported. “Humboldt really needed a place like this,” says owner Ammiel Tanski, who has created a chic and inviting space for people to connect and enjoy wine, whether it be on a casual Wednesday game night or a class with the winemakers themselves. “I was raised with wine. I come from an Italian family, so it was always a part of our meals,” says Tanski, who is part of the family that launched Gabriel’s and took over Moonstone Grill. The Wine Cellar opened in February of 2019, just before COVID shutdowns. “It was definitely an interesting start to running a business.” Still, she navigated the pandemic well, leaning into her entrepreneurial spirit and seeing the need to bring an elevated dining experience home. The crème brûlée made with fragrant orangecello ($8) and paired with a late harvest Sauterne is a standout. When the Wine Cellar is open, there’s a very good chance you’ll find Tanski behind the bar. Occasionally, she’ll take a working vacation to explore what other regions have to offer. A recent trip to Baja led to the discovery of some excellent wines. “I like to bring wine from all over the world, to showcase producers that people might not have heard of before. I also want to give local winemakers a platform to share their wine.” Humboldt County wine production is an expanding industry that has been, in some ways, overshadowed by the region’s famed crop, cannabis. “We’re finally being recognized for our wine. Now, wine has a chance to shine. There’s opportunity for growth and diversification,” Tanski says. In fact, Humboldt County is becoming one of the finest wine growing regions in California. Because of our distinct microclimates, the region produces a variety of wines. With increasingly rising temperatures throughout the rest of the state, it’s possible Humboldt’s grapes and wine will be increasingly in demand. “Wine can be fun,” says Tanski. “It’s a learning experience [that] brings people together through a commonality of interest. And it does draw you in. People get sucked into the culture and the vibe and the lore of the wine world.” Certainly, the Wine Cellar is a space to do just that. humboldtinsider.com

In the charming town of Trinidad, Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the replica 1949 Memorial Lighthouse honoring those lost or buried at sea, and take in the view and the sea air. You can tour the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse (a working navigational aid) from 10 AM. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. In summer, the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month when COVID-19 conditions allow, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are creating — maybe even take a piece home.

Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can find warm refuge in Blue Lake, a picturesque town whose motto is “sunshine and sea air.” On the shores of the Mad River, locals enjoy fishing, sunbathing and swimming in the summer, and fun hikes and bike trails anytime. In addition to fun outdoor adventures, Blue Lake is a hub for music and the arts. The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre imports students from around the world, producing shows throughout the year, including the annual five-week Baduwa't Festival. You can also sing along at Humboldt Folklife Festival in July, a weeklong celebration with live music, dancing and workshops. With the little ones? Check out photos and artifacts from Blue Lake’s pioneer, Indigenous, logging and railroad histories at the Blue Lake Museum or visit Perigot Park, where you can play baseball or soak up picturesque views.

Eureka ← This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to
the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts Alive!, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

South of the Avenue of the Giants lies Garberville, where you can escape the coastal fog, enjoy warmer temperatures and hit the farmers market for a treat. The little town has a surprisingly robust nightlife scene and a wild and beautiful landscape of hills and forest that you can sample in Tooby Memorial Park. Check the calendar and see what’s playing at the Mateel Community Center in neighboring Redway — the venue regularly brings in major musical acts.

Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals.

Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival. . Arcata Community Center, 321 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The annual festival features nearly 100 field trips, workshops and lectures as well as a free bird fair with vendors, artists, live birds of prey and family nature crafts. godwitdays.org.
Shelter Cove ← Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal comings and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination.
