Change It Up You could use a change of scenery. Just for, say, a weekend (or two,
or three) ditch your usual haunts and try something new in our county. Well, not brand new, necessarily. In this issue, we’ll walk you down Main Street in Victorian Ferndale for a drink at the classic Palace Saloon, built in 1890. (Tip: Try the Guido.) If the atmosphere puts you in the mood for more Victorian architecture, we’ll take you past the gate of one of Eureka’s most popular photo spots, the Pink Lady mansion. Most of us have passed it for years and never been inside, so now that it’s been converted to a vacation rental, how can we resist a peek? Hear that sound? It’s the roar of motorcycle engines. Humboldt has some of the most breathtaking rides in the country, with all the twists and turns and epic scenery you could ask for. In “Moto Tours,” we’ll point you to some primo routes and a café pit stop for easy riders and vicarious enthusiasts alike. If you really want to shift your point of view, try a little drama at Blue Lake’s Dell’Arte International, where artistic director, actress, playwright and local icon Joan Schirle teaches students and audiences what theater can do for the community and the soul. Read her profile inside and then see her work during the Mad River Festival coming in July. Our festivals have some history, too, and we’re just getting into the season for packed weekends of county fairs, wild kinetic sculpture races, sunny food fests and non-stop music. (Thumb through the 90day calendar and you’ll see what we mean.) And we’ve plenty to do in between. In Perfect Trips, you’ll find rejuvenating bike rides, a holein-the-wall barbecue joint, a bourgeoning art scene and places for the kids to follow their natural curiosity. Take a break from adding to cart, too. Remember real browsing? Wander through a few of our favorite independent shops for funky jewelry, hand-printed clothes and very cool denim. Look, touch and — gasp! — maybe even try on something. And you could burn daylight scrolling endlessly through Yelp like usual, or you could take our word for it and dig into some surf and turf. We’ll give you the lowdown on a pair of classic and creative interpretations to savor. Sweet tooth? Yeah, we have some ideas about where to get your sugar fix, too. Of course, you might never want to return to your old routines, but go ahead and take the risk. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

DON’T MISS IT: Kinetic Grand Championship May 28-30 Teams race fanciful, humanpowered, amphibious contraptions — feats of both art and engineering — over land and sea from Arcata to Ferndale. Arcata Bay Oyster Festival June 18 Bask in the glory of mollusks with live music, shucking contests and more oysters than you can possibly slurp, right on the Arcata Plaza.
CHECK OUT: Blue Lake This tiny walkable/bikeable town, sitting in what seems like a perpetual sunny patch surrounded by mountains, comes alive during the Mad River Festival, but it’s always good for a stroll, a bite and some live music on the weekends.

Grand Dame Dell’Arte International’s Joan Schirle

Insider Spring 16 pg 18-21 PROFILE.indd 19
4/7/16 8:40 PM
Joan Schirle leaves her shoes at the door of the classroom
and travels across the airy, cool studio in a pair of black sweatpants. Her MFA students are settled along the east wall. The sun shines on their backs through the tall windows of the 100-year-old building. Schirle situates herself in the center of the room, with long, silver hair haphazardly restrained by a plastic clip. She peers through giant Edna Mode spectacles and asks, “How does your body register being caught by something?” “In acting, if you cannot be caught in the circumstances of what you’re doing, you’re not in it.” She sets her students the task of being caught, “OK. Go! And see what you find.” They rise and move around the room, shouting, leaping, running. With eyes on her students, Schirle sweeps past the piano to grab her coffee cup. She moves with a grace that speaks to a lifetime in theater and dance. Founding artistic director of Blue Lake’s Dell’Arte International, Schirle grew up an artsy, repressed Catholic schoolgirl in San Jose, California. Her mother refused to let her take tap and baton, insisting those pursuits were for “trashy girls.” Instead, Schirle was raised on a strict diet of piano and ballet, which she admits gave her the perfect entree into theater. After nearly flunking out of her first year at Cal Berkeley, she transferred to the University of Santa Clara, where a professor suggested she help out backstage at a production. It was there she found her people. “I was so impressed by the family spirit of those who worked in the theater,” she confides. “They were playful and affectionate with each other. This was in contrast to my family situation, which was chilly.” She laughs softly. “Not chill, just chilly.” Schirle became entrenched in theater, but a year after graduating, she got pregnant. “I moved to New York so that my parents wouldn’t find out. And I gave my daughter up for adoption.” Forty years later, they reunited through an international registry. Her daughter now lives in Florida and, Schirle exclaims with pride, “She’s a biker. I mean a biker!” In New York, Schirle trained in mime and modern dance, and got her certification to teach the F.M. Alexander Technique before leaving to travel Europe. In time she headed back to Santa Clara to teach. After a devastating breakup in the early 1970s, Schirle quit her job and slept in her Volkswagen van on the Mendocino coast for a while, then joined up with some friends who were living in Briceland.
She spent a few years with Southern Humboldt’s first generation of back-to-the-landers. Then, out of money and looking for a job, she heard about a festival in Eureka that hired — and paid — actors. The Grand Comedy Festival at Qual-a-wa-loo was run by Carlo Mazzone-Clementi and his wife Jane Hill. They didn’t hire her to act but invited her to join the faculty of their theater school, which she did. The school soon tanked, but in 1976, Schirle joined Mazzone-Clementi and Jonathan Paul Cook to found the Dell’Arte Players Company. Dell’Arte International, as it’s now known, has been a powerhouse in the international theater scene for the four decades since. Schirle is a self-identified “slasher”: actor/director/playwright/teacher/musician. In her years at Dell’Arte, she’s worked on a mind-boggling array of local and international theater projects, has written and performed in her one woman play, Second Skin, and designed the school’s accredited MFA program. She’s won a slew of prestigious awards and taught students from Yale University to the Bejing Dance Academy, and worked with artists from Cirque du Soleil. Shirle has also been busy filming a documentary about Dell’Arte’s most popular stage show to date, Mary Jane the Musical. Perhaps the jewel in the Dell’Artian crown, Mary Jane explores both the benign and the ugly side of Humboldt’s cannabis culture. Schirle created the title role, which she plays with aplomb, saying it speaks to the first generation grower, the kind of people she knew when she lived in SoHum. “This was before marijuana became such a cash crop,” Schirle says. “But the seeds of it, so to speak, were there.” Mary Jane the Potumentary is being submitted to film festivals across the country and will screen in Humboldt during harvest 2016. You can check out clips at www.maryjanemusical.com. Schirle has a lot left to do. Current projects include writing the main stage play, The Big Thirst, for this summer’s Mad River Festival. “It’s a comic mystery about water,” she says. It’s the centerpiece for the month-long celebration of theater and music that includes physical theater, circus arts and the Humboldt Folklife Festival. (Check out the full schedule at www.dellarte.com). “No one person walks like another,” Schirle tells her class, adding, “Carlos said that.” And Schirle, an elegant, theatrical renegade with a little bit of hippie thrown in, has proven no one walks quite like her.

Motorcycling through the towering redwood groves of Humboldt County is a trip like no other on earth. “We have the majestic trees, the mountains, the rivers and the coastline. And, a relaxed pace of life here that’s hard to find anywhere else,” says Vince Campbell, president of the United Bikers of Northern California, a nonprofit that serves as a roundtable for more than a dozen local motorcycle groups. “It’s a very special place for locals and all the people who come from all over the world to ride here.” Campbell, a seasoned rider, estimates there are at least 1,000 motorcyclists in the area. They represent a mix of riders from Harleys to road racers to dirt bikes and classics. During riding season from April through October, thousands more venture to and through Humboldt. Motorcycling is appealing to an increasingly broader audience, with men and women alike straddling bikes for sport, hobby and more budget-friendly

pring in Willow Creek is a time of high optimism and the rebirth of human enthusiasm. Standing on the porch you can hear the ping of baseball bats and laughter as the little league teams take to the fields. Our resident whitewater river runners take to the swollen streams with giddy anticipation of a new secret section of river they have not yet explored. Ill-prepared people count their remaining sticks of firewood in hopes of making May 15th, the unofficial end of the woodstove season. Rototillers
whir anticipating spring gardens of snow peas, lettuce and radishes. Zen weed eaters embrace their long journey. Shorts and flip flops make sporadic appearances as folks challenge the last gasp of rain. Though there are many adventures here in the collection of mountains and streams that do not necessarily require skills or money to participate in, oftentimes it is the simple serendipitous activities that are the most special. Coho Cottages is here to help point you in the right direction. Willow Creek, it’s worth the drive.

transport. Female motorcycle ownership is at an all-time high, according to the latest data from the Motorcycle Industry Council. Its latest survey reports that women now account for 14 percent of all motorcycle owners. Long-time riders Suzie Alvernaz and Mandi Kindred are pleased. They are the co-founders of Venus Motorcycles, a Blue Lake business set to open in 2017 and cater to women bikers. Last year they hosted the first ever International Female Ride Day in Northern California, welcoming the growing community of women cyclists in the region. In Humboldt, route options are plentiful. “There’s a beautiful ride awaiting in every direction,” says Alvernaz. (See favorite routes on page 30.) Riding also has a long history in the area — the Bayshore Mall used to be a flat track, for example, and the first person to travel by motorcycle from coast to coast was George Wyman, a former Eureka resident who made the trip circa 1903.

You can stop in for a primer on local motorcycling history at Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe (440 F St.) in Eureka on the corner of Fifth and F streets. From the dozen or so vintage and racing bikes on display, to the concrete tables embedded with motorcycle parts, to the motorcycle-inspired panini menu, this place has become a destination spot for locals and tourists. The BLMC is no Sons of Anarchy spot. Moto-heads, scooters, bicyclists, drivers and walkers are welcome, too. Owners Jeff and Cassandra Hesseltine opened the place in 2013. Both graduated from Humboldt State University and have lived in the area for two decades. “The café reflects my passion for motorcycling,” says Jeff, who was a road racer with the American Federation of Motorcyclists in his younger years. “It’s more social than a traditional motorcycle shop and also provides a home to the cycling community to meet up and have events. Riders and non-riders alike come here for the food and atmosphere.” If you’re there for breakfast, fuel up on the Italian-style coffee and German pancakes, sweet popovers topped with fresh blueberries, strawberries and real maple syrup. Hands up for the paninis, too — the Bultaco with chipotle chicken and guacamole, or the Triumph with roast beef, Swiss and horseradish mayo. Wash them down with vino or the local brews on tap.

Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park: Take a leisurely ride on this 30-mile stretch of old U.S. Highway 101 where mammoth redwoods abound. There’s a reason why it’s a world-famous scenic drive. Tip: Watch out for tourists lying in the road taking photos of the trees. State Route 299 to State Route 36 Loop: Campbell calls this his “Ride Around the Block.” Dedicate a full day for taking this 250-mile ride adventure. Go east on Highway 299 to Weaverville, then take State Route 3 to Hayfork, and travel onward to State Route 36, and then to U.S. Highway 101. Riders experience all the natural beauty the county offers plus plenty of twisties. Scenic ride from Blue Lake to Orleans: Follow State Route 299 to Willow Creek, then State Route 96 to Orleans. Alvernaz says this is a picturesque 1.5-hour ride (one-way) with some climbs and curves following the Trinity River. It also has some great swimming holes and food options. The Lost Coast Wildcat: This is a 100-mile loop for skilled, dual sport bikes. Take U.S. Highway 101 to Rockefeller Forest, pass through Petrolia and Honeydew looping back to Victorian Ferndale. Hesseltine says the ride winds through redwoods and along beautiful rivers, depositing you on a wild, uninhabited coastline. Then ride almost on the beach for miles while only seeing a few quaint ranch houses. The road twists and turns and is a bit unforgiving but eventually leads back to Ferndale.

There are long stretches without food or gas, so top off in Red Bluff and again in Platina. Redwood National Park north of Orick: Motorcyclists from around the world cruise the Newton B. The Pink Lady By Susan Penn • Photography by Amy Kumler
erched daintily on the corner across from the Carson Mansion is the Pink Lady, a classic Queen Anne Victorian built as a wedding gift from William Carson to his eldest son Milton. (202 M St, Eureka) The Lady feels like the dark green, iron-gated mansion’s flirtatious kid sister, surrounded by a white wooden fence with an appealing covered gate with decorative circles and sun ray motifs also used on the house. Both buildings are architectural must-sees in Humboldt County, and now you can stay in the Pink Lady. In recent years, the Pink Lady has been used as office space, but the current owner has turned it into a vacation rental with full baths, claw-foot tubs and a new kitchen. The Pink Lady is ready, once again, to receive guests. The ornamental and structural elements lure passersby for photo ops. The white trim boasts
spindles, knobs, braces and artistic flourishes. Wooden shingles cover the walls in a mosaic of scallops, hexagons, diamonds and rectangles. Rosy light streams through stained glass windows at the base of the turret, drawing you to the front porch. Inside, the Lady’s spacious entryway welcomes with gleaming hardwood trim and carvings that have survived the ravages of time and a chandelier and sculpted banister along the stairs to the second floor. On the left, doors lead to the parlor. Past the parlor is a separate dining room. The owners have installed a small, modern kitchen, but the original pass-through from the kitchen to the hall has been retained — a remnant from a time when the area was the domain of servants. A voice tube, the pre-electricity version of the intercom, connects upstairs and downstairs. Beyond the kitchen, a door on the right opens to a back stairway providing direct access to the second floor. This little stairway

glows in the light of a stained glass window, and feels like a magical portal. Milton Carson, his wife Mary Bell and their daughter lived in the Pink Lady from 1889 to 1912, when they moved into the Carson Mansion. The Pink Lady stayed in the family until 1920, after which it saw a succession of owners. Intriguing among these were two sisters in Germany who operated it as rooming house, and from whom it was seized in 1942 as Nazi property. There are just four bedrooms upstairs, but it’s easy to picture boarders sharing a room. The master bedroom, which includes the tower facing the bay and the Carson Mansion, holds a king size bed, yet still feels open. The other three bedrooms are on the other side of the house, and the one at the far end has an attached sunroom overlooking the yard, the Carter House, and the county jail. A curious element is the presence of doors between the three bedrooms, one of them hidden inside two closets. But a lady is entitled to her secrets. If curbside photos aren’t enough to satisfy your architectural curiosity, you can book a reservation through Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals (834-6555, www.redwoodcoastvacationrentals.com), and a stay includes the chance to dine at the Carson Mansion, an opportunity normally restricted to Ingomar Club members.

Margaret Atwood wrote, “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” Spring in Humboldt County gives you plenty of opportunities to do just that. The air is warm(ish) and everything is green and lush. The daylight hours are dramatically longer, so you can explore all day and still have time to catch the sunset from the beach (or the bar).

Biking in Trinidad. courtesy of pacific outfitters
Outdoorsy Type The perfect bike ride in Trinidad feels like a ride on the edge of the world. This route takes you through the scenic fishing village’s neighborhoods, watersheds and coastline. Park at Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse, take the obligatory panoramic photo and head north on Trinity Street, which becomes Stagecoach Road as you leave town. This fun, curving route is narrow, so stay alert and share the road. You’ll pass through College Cove and dip in and out of Mill Creek before joining up with Patrick’s Point Drive. The wider road continues past Trinidad’s fanciest bed and breakfasts, offers peekaboo views of the Pacific and neatly deposits you at the main entrance to Patrick’s Point State Park.
Park admission is free for hikers and bikers, so coast in and explore. Bikers need to stick to the paved roads within the park, but you can lock up your bike against the gate by Lookout Rock if you want to hike and beachcomb. Don’t forget to ride down to Palmer Point before you head south back to town. If that 11-mile loop is enough for you, treat yourself to ice cream (or a mashed potato cone) at Lighthouse Grill. If you’re craving more coastline, stay on Patrick’s Point Drive as it winds through town and becomes Scenic Drive. You’ll hug the cliffs and share this rough road with surfers and beachgoers all the way to Moonstone Beach. Soak your feet in the ocean shallows here for as long as
your heart desires before heading back whence you came. The 5-mile Elk River Trail in Headwaters Forest Reserve is a popular destination, but the majority of its users only enjoy part of the trail. The first mile is level and paved, making it easily accessible to bikers, skaters and children. The next 2 miles are unpaved and have a very small elevation gain. You can stick to these first sections of trail and have an easy, breezy day in the park — bring a picnic lunch, meander through the interpretive displays and poke along the South Fork of the Eel River. Or you can ante up and commit to the full 11-mile loop. You’ll be glad (and proud) you did. After leaving those tricy-

cles and dog-walkers behind, you’ll be enveloped by the cool quiet of the forest’s canopy. After a short, fairly steep climb, you enter a loop trail through a beautiful old growth grove and you’ll feel the redwood magic. Well done. Some visitors to our redwoods only view them through their windshields. They roll through the Avenue of the Giants, pulling over to snap selfies and buy Bigfoot keychains. We prefer to actually leave the road and get up close and personal with our towering tree buddies. Doing so doesn’t always require a big commitment — the Homestead and Big Tree Loop in Humboldt Redwoods State Park delivers maximum bang for minimum hiking buck. It even includes a scenic drive for those committed to the trees/ dashboard experience. From U.S. Highway 101 South, take exit 663 and then follow Bull Flats Road along the Eel River. Take a right on the Mattole Road and stay on this gorgeous stretch of road for about 3 miles until you reach the Big Tree parking lot. The Big Tree trail, as its name suggests, leads hikers through a grand, dense old growth grove along the creek. It crosses Mattole Road (which is noticeably quieter in the spring than the summer) and follows the creek to Albee Creek Campground. (If you’d like to stay the night, may we recommend site #25?) Take the lush, quiet Homestead Trail (which is open to horses as well as hikers) back to the Big Tree area to complete the 2.4-mile loop. Lovely.

Foodies As winter turns to spring, it’s time to remember the old complaint, “Stop calling Stardough’s for the sun report!” Instead, get your butt over to Blue Lake and check the weather at this favorite café yourself (448 Railroad Ave). Bestcase scenario: It’s as lovely as you’d hoped and you enjoy a stroll on the levee or a hang on the beach. Worst case: It’s overcast but you’re in sweet little Blue Lake! Either way, treat yourself to a Stardough’s breakfast (yum, warm baked goods). Or if your perfect trip started a little later, sample wood-fired pizza or tri-tip. Whatever your food selection, we once again urge you to sit outside in the garden to soak up whatever weather and Blue Lake cuteness you can. King Salmon is a funky place — kind
of an old fishing guy’s Venice, where greying beach houses back into the canals that run between the streets. Tucked into one of those canals, Sammy’s BBQ and Catering (1125 King Salmon Ave., Eureka) serves up Polynesian-style barbecue in generous, delicious portions. The family-run cafe is no frills, and the menu is deceptively simple. Pick a meat and two sides (the Kalua pork and pineapple coleslaw are killer — but do what you will) for $10. Take a seat on the waterfront deck. Dig in. Die of foodie happiness. Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate’s (4 West Fourth St., Eureka) Dustin Taylor and Adam Dick source fair trade cacao from around the world and transform it into elegant, delicious chocolate in
their small factory in Eureka. Twice a week (Thursday and Saturday), they invite the public to view their process by opening up their factory for 45 minute tours. Each tour is followed by a tasting hosted by one of the chocolate makers, including the opportunity to sample made-to-order drinking chocolate. In addition to their chocolate making, Dick and Taylor are woodworkers whose design aesthetic and skills are evident in every detail of the factory’s beautifully handcrafted interior. Private tours (including field trips and romantic tours for two) are available by request. Since tours are in a working factory, children ages 6 and up are preferred. Book your tour online, call 798-6010 or email info@dtchocolate.com.

Art Lovers The Goudi’ni Native American Arts Gallery, located on Humboldt State University’s campus in the Behavioral & Social Science Building, is devoted to celebrating contemporary and traditional Native American artists. Shows at the gallery change every month, and each is designed to strengthen connections between the university, art fans and local indigenous communities. Visits to the Goudi’ni gallery are stirring, due to the visual richness of the exhibits in the glass-walled space as well as the traditional knowledge and history that shape each artist’s work. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday and admission is free. The Creamery District (1251 Ninth St.) is a vibrant, eclectic art and commerce community centered around the
46

historic Creamery Building in Arcata. The once ramshackle building itself is a local landmark, with its 80-foot-high tower (now a vacation rental and studio space), roof decks, and enormous multi-paned windows. The Creamery Building houses the Arcata Playhouse, a dance and martial arts studio, and several other craft businesses. Start your visit to the district here, but then wander the surrounding blocks to find public art, studio spaces and architectural salvage. (A basic map of the area is available at www.creamerydistrict. org, but it’s no substitute for self-guided touring.) The district hosts an open air Art Market on the last Saturday of each month from April through November, featuring live music performances and handmade treats.
The streets of the Victorian Village of Ferndale are a work of art themselves (the town is regularly noted as one of America’s Prettiest Painted Places, whatever that means), and at their center is the Ferndale Art and Cultural Center. Open every day from 10 am-5 pm, the gallery features 21 local artists whose work is informed by the agrarian setting without being predictable. Visitors are as likely to see silky turned-wood vessels as needlepoint and watercolor portraits of farm animals. The featured artists also work in the gallery, making each visit an opportunity to appreciate the works and peer into the minds and creative process of the artists who create them. With the Kids With spring comes longer days, and with longer days comes later bedtimes. Parents all over Humboldt are propelled outdoors by the drive to embrace the sun and light and to run their kids like dog until bedtime. Fortunately, there are many spots to accomplish these twin goals. McKinleyville’s Hiller Park is directly on the Hammond Trail, but is often overshadowed by its sandy neighbors to the North and South (Clam Beach and Mad River Beach). The Hammond Trail itself is a fantastic, kid-friendly trip. The wide, paved trail is ideal for bikes and safe for those towing trailers or

leading a pack of tots on scooters and trikes. Hiller Park’s playground is trailside and has play structures suitable for toddlers and big kids. 1.5 miles of trail loop through the park’s meadows and woods, making them ideal for kid-led adventures (long hikes, short distances). Motivated pint-sized explorers will delight in following the trails further into the Mad River Bluffs, which feature several overlooks of the river and ocean. Bonus points if you spot harbor seals napping in the sand. Fresh Freeze (3023 F St., Eureka) is a 1950s-style diner serving up classic burgers and fries in the walkable shopping
district of Henderson Center. It’s been in operation since 1951, when it was a drive-in with car-hop service. Kids (and adults) can order ice cream delicacies from a separate walk-up window, check out the vintage toy cars and decor in the diner and then tool around the neighborhood. We love the thick shakes, made with real ice cream. The Fortuna Depot Museum (3 Park St.) is housed in a historic train station, restored to its former glory and conveniently deposited next to a large playground and ball fields. Many of the museum’s educational displays on local history are child-friendly and invite

visitors to get hands on with local artifacts like a vintage typewriter, stereoscope and vintage costumes. A perennial favorite with children is Caboose #11, where kids can play conductor by learning different train whistle signals and operating the brake wheel. The Depot is open Thursday through Sunday from noon-4:30, and will extend hours to Monday-Sunday beginning in June. The Fisheries Exhibit (Main and Sixth streets) in Scotia is the largest freshwater aquarium on the North Coast, and is open every weekday from 8 am-4:30 pm (open on Saturdays during the summer). The outdoor portion of the exhibit is openair with several tanks designed to recreate a natural stream environment — including simulated rocks, logs, ferns and waterfalls. The tanks are stocked with salmon and steelhead trout at different stages of development. Take the Scotia exit from U.S. Highway 101, Follow Main Street through town to the Inn, museum and shopping center. The fishery is past the main part of town; look for the visitor parking area.

Not Strictly for Tourists Most people do not think of farms as tourist destinations. But here in Humboldt, we love our community supported agriculture something fierce. An authentic travel experience in our region is not complete without at least one visit to our farmers markets to see what the region’s growers have to offer. The Arcata Farmers Market is open year round (Saturday morning at the Arcata Plaza), and is the perfect place to welcome spring. But why stop there? Journey to the source and visit Trinity River Farm (2449 State Route 96) along the Trinity River. The drive up State Route 299 to Willow Creek is a bucket-list-worthy road trip in and of itself. The farm’s roadside farm stand opens for the season on April 1 and sells farm grown produce, plants and locally made jams, jellies and sauces. Call farmer Tom O’Gorman at (530) 629-3200 in advance of your visit if you would like a tour of the place. Wine tasting in Humboldt can be in-

timidating — we have a diverse array of vineyards and wineries scattered across an area the size of New Jersey. The Humboldt Wine Association can help you plan a multi-winery visit that crisscrosses the region. Or you can plan your own walking/tasting tour by visiting the tasting rooms of Moonstone Crossing (529 Trinity St.) and Bergeron Winery (359 Main St.) in Trinidad. Moonstone Crossing specializes in rich, full-bodied reds, and handcrafts all of its wines in small quantities using traditional techniques. You can taste for yourself in the artfilled tasting room Wednesday-Sunday (call 845-5492 for specific tasting hours or to make an appointment). Only a few blocks away, Bergeron Winery offers tastings of its wines in a sunlit room with views of the redwoods. The Monk Red Cabernet Sauvignon just won a medal in the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Call for an appointment at 677-5177.
Check the 90-day calendar in the back of this magazine, and if the Eureka Symphony has a performance scheduled, go. Some 50 local musicians with serious chops play in this 25-year-old ensemble. And you get to experience their music in the plush surrounds of the stately Arkley Center for the Performing Arts (412 G St., Eureka). Family-friendly music talks at which kids can check out instruments up close precede most performances. And if the theater is dark, classical music aficionados can get a fix at Cornucopia (425 Snug Alley, Eureka), a carefully curated classical music CD shop — when’s the last time you saw one of those? Owner Dorine Liesz carries on the shop started by the late Leon Berliner, a Holocaust survivor and classical music lover who envisioned the shop as a cultural hub. Sweet Eats By Jennifer Fumiko Cahill Styling by Lynn Leishman, Photo by Drew Hyland Don’t wait until after dinner for your dessert — head into Humboldt Sweets (614 Main St., Ferndale) for breakfast. The cinnamon rolls ($5) and massive caramel pecan cinnamon rolls fresh from the oven are a hot mess in the best possible way ($6). You might also see for yourself just how naughty the cream cheese and jam Naughty Buns are ($5). That Ramone’s Bakery has five branches, including shops in Wildberries Market and Pierson’s Building Center, is a sign that we are un-
willing to ever be very far from its berry scones, chocolate sea salt cookies and fruit pies ($1-$16). Start with the one in Old Town (209 E St., Eureka) and linger at a window table. Watch a child’s face upon entering the candy-colored environs of Mia Bella Cupcakes (1041 H St., Arcata). Adults, too, press their noses to the glass cases and struggle to choose between the filled chocolate raspberry, the birthday cake and the salted caramel ($2.85). Relax, six-packs are available to go.

Humboldt County’s long growing season is ideal for raising premium authentic grassfed beef, ensuring our customers a fresh product year round. At Humboldt Grassfed Beef we believe in gaining and maintaining the trust of our customers by providing healthy natural beef using local ranchers who share our values. Values like sustainable
agricultural practices, humane handling, and a commitment to the local community. Humboldt Grassfed Beef cattle come from ranches throughout Northern California from ranchers that have been stewards of the land and cattle for generations. Our partnership with these ranchers helps us to meet our goal of providing beef with the best flavor while being sensitive and respectful of our natural resources.
“Small family ranchers are an important part of Humboldt Grassfed Beef ’s success. Our partnership with these generational ranchers and independent markets make our product a truly Northern California experience that our customers can be proud to serve to their families.” -Lee Mora, Humboldt Grassfed Beef

The Palace Saloon History in the drinking By Josephine Johnson Photography by Drew Hyland • Styling by Lynn Leishman
with its red and white classic two-story Victorian exterior, its 40-foot bar, original woodwork and trophy-antlered walls, the Palace Saloon has been a community institution since 1890. Back in the day, local merchants, cattlemen, dairymen and townsfolk, all made the Palace their go-to for news, gossip, drinks and good company. These days, most folks stop by after work for a pint or two, relax and catch up with friends. It’s a local’s bar where work boots and Carhartts are king. Palace owners Dave and Barb Mogni, who took over the business in January and who also own the iconic Ivanhoe restaurant and hotel just up the street, are all about Ferndale’s agricultural heritage and local community. “Barb and I love this town and we see the Palace as a way for us to help preserve a little local history while serving the town and travelers,” says Dave Mogni, who’s proud of the bar’s pedigree. “You know the Palace is recognized as the farthest westernly bar in the continental United States, right?” Happy hour (4-6 pm weekdays) is often a lively meet up, especially on Fridays when Eel River IPA, Ankerstein, Steelhead, Great White, Stella Artois and Budweiser flow freely from the taps. On tap or bottled, beer’s always a win. But the current local fave is the Guido — two parts vodka, two parts cranberry and a shot of peach schnapps. Some like it on the rocks, others like it in a martini glass. But all who partake agree it’s a bit of liquid summer sunshine in a glass. The Palace Saloon really goes off during Ferndale’s special events, when out-of-towners get their best glimpse of the bar — Or at least a glimpse of the bar at its fullest and rowdiest. The town hosts the finish line of Humboldt County’s famous, threeday kinetic sculpture race. Racers and spectators from all over the world converge on tiny Ferndale. “It gets pretty crazy around here Sunday and Monday of race weekend,” says Dave Mogni, “and it’s all in good fun.” The bar’s two pool tables and full-sized shuffleboard get a lot of play, and locals and out-of-towners mix and mingle and enjoy the respective wackiness and classic charm the race and Ferndale have to offer. By Wednesday and Thursday, the town slows way down. But by Friday, the locals are back en force in time for happy hour. And a Guido on the rocks.

Double D Steak & Seafood 320 Main St., Fortuna 707-725-3700 Tuesday through Thursday | 5 - 9 pm Friday and Saturday | 5 - 10 pm
every town has an old, by-gone restaurant that makes locals misty and hungry recalling it. In Fortuna, that place is the un-fussy, family-run steak and pasta joint Parlato’s. But right there on its hallowed grounds, as if conjured by the town’s collective longing, has sprung Double D Steak & Seafood, honoring that very gastro-nostalgia down to its redwood plank bar and old-school menu. It’s part cowboy (this isn’t Portland and the antler chandelier is not ironic) and part Italian, so show up hungry. Entrees come, according to tradition, with a loaf of fresh-baked country bread, antipasto, soup or salad, a side of saucy ravioli and baked potato or thick steak fries (swap for the house mac and cheese if you think you’ve got room). The surf and turf is the classic rib eye and broiled lobster tail of your dreams ($28 steak, $14 lobster) — there’s no reason you shouldn’t stay on theme and get a Double D Dirty Martini to go with it ($8). For a slightly different take, there’s the Steak Oscar, tenderloin crowned with a lemon caper sauce and a generous crowning of crabmeat ($32). If you’re sharing plates with someone, try to pressure him or her into the Chicken Wellington special, baked in a buttery pastry crust with spinach, mushrooms and a creamy blend of cheeses ($25). It is the one time someone may envy a fellow diner’s chicken in a steak house.

Salt Fish House 761 Eighth St., Arcata 707-630-5300 www.saltfishhouse.com Tuesday through Sunday | 4 - 10 pm
Down below deck from the Arcata Plaza is the crisp, sail-white interior of Salt Fish House, with its Jules Verne-esque mural of tentacles and its glowing bar. Start there. Consider the aptly named and none-too-sweet Corpse Reviver #3, with its Bulleit rye, aromatic Angostura bitters and zing of ginger ($8), or the more tropical Thai Me Up, a lemongrassy concoction with coconut vodka and a touch of tamarind syrup ($9) that might just bring on a monsoon. There are plenty of enticing appetizers, Humboldt Bay oysters among them, of course. The charred octopus comes in a single, tender whip of tentacle with smoked paprika beside an arugula salad dotted with tart olives and sweet sundried tomatoes ($13). The house surf and turf ($27) isn’t steak and lobster, but grilled sturgeon beside a chunk of pork belly in a sticky, smoky-sweet Asian glaze. It will leave you wondering why we’re not all eating pork and fish together all the time. There will be dessert specials — and dessert beverages — so hear them out, but the orange cornmeal cake is a favorite ($9). The pale yellow wedge and its accompanying dollop of chocolate mousse, spill of caramel sauce and candied citrus peel strike a sweet balance.

One of our favorite stops is Indigo Denim Bar in Garberville. Owner Annie Bignon started out with her children’s clothing store Li’l Sproutz Boutique and brought in the Joe’s Jeans line a few years later for her mom shoppers. Since then, Bignon’s expanded, partnered with sister-in-law Nina Chadwick and beefed up her inventory for one of the largest selections of premium denim in the county. Along with Joe’s Jeans, you can shimmy into brands like Hudson, Paige, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity and AG. Need a top to go with? Michael Stars, Velvet, and Young, Fabulous & Broke are on hand, as are jewelry by Marit Rae and Rose Gonzalez, and handcrafted Shwood sunglasses.

The Bodega H.A. Pearson, the vivacious owner of The Bodega, is known for her super soft, comfortable apparel line Nothing Obvious (and her little dog, Olive). She does her hand screen-printing on site, using eco-friendly water-based inks. We fell in love with the men’s and women’s T-shirts printed with octopi and glow-in-the-dark moons, and bat-wing cowl sweatshirts. The cozy unisex joggers and hand-dyed ombre tights are perfect for cool spring evenings, and you’ll find lots of tanks and warm weather options for festival season, too. After years working alongside other makers of handcrafted goods, she’s also culled favorites for the shop, including Moss Follows jewelry by designer local Aisling Svennungsen, and knives by Travis Halling, the Blue Ox Millworks blacksmith who fabricates pieces from railroad spikes, chain saw chains and old logging saw blades.

Humboldt County Fair.
REGGAE ON THE RIVER French’s camp hosts this long-running long weekend of nonstop irie music, food and vendors. Performers come from all over the world for this monster. August 4-7 HUMBOLDT COUNTY FAIR This is the real deal: an old-fashioned fair where you can size up livestock, ride the Ferris wheel, eat cotton candy and play the ponies at the Ferndale Fairgrounds. August 18-28 BIGFOOT CELEBRATION Kind of a big, hairy deal around here. Enjoy barbecue, play games, watch the parade and dance to live music at this familyfriendly Sasquatch soiree in Willow Creek. September 3
NORTH COUNTRY FAIR A sea of vendors, all-day music on multiple stages and two parades — the drumming and dancing samba line and the funky All Species costume parade — over two days on the Arcata Plaza. September 17-18 APPLE HARVEST Fortuna’s Main Street swells with cider, pies and fresh apples galore, plus speeder car rides, a street fair, live music and more. TBA MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL OF COURAGE Party like it’s 1399 with costumes, hardcore jousting, a fairy horse parade and a treasure quest for the kids. TBA

REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK
Just north of Trinidad, Patrick’s Point State Park calls, with stunning vistas, traditional Yurok structures and the appropriately named Agate Beach. Farther up, Orick is the hub for plenty of trails and camping possibilities. Start at the Kuchel Visitor Center, staffed by the National Park Service, and pick your Redwood National Park adventure, whether it’s the epic Tall Trees Grove, the dreamy Ladybird Johnson Grove, the Skunk Cabbage Trail or the mustsee wonder of Fern Canyon.

Trinidad’s iconic lighthouse is a symbol of the town where Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the smaller Memorial Lighthouse and take in the view and the sea air. Trinidad Art Night fills the little town with music, food and local artwork every first Friday of the month, and the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are up creating — maybe even take a piece home.

The town’s motto is “river fun in the mountain sun.” Willow Creek is hot enough for wine making or a cool dip in a Camp Kimtu swimming hole. The weather also means great produce at roadside stands. If you’re adventurous, you can throw on a vest and do some river rafting, and more leisurely types can fish or play a round of golf. Just keep your eyes peeled, because this is Bigfoot country. Swing into the China Flat Museum and explore the lore.

Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can generally find truth and relief in Blue Lake’s motto: sunshine and sea air. Where the Mad River takes its final stretch toward the Pacific, a small community of 1,200 displays an international reach. Once sawmills ruled, but now the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater imports students from around the world to learn the craft of commedia dell’arte and perform dramas and old-school clowning year round.

Arcata Home to Humboldt State University, Arcata is a magnet for arts, culture, entertainment and education. Hike the Arcata Community Forest or play among the big trees in Redwood Park. Cruise the plaza for Saturday's farmers market or a festival. Go from locavore to exotic in the restaurants and cafés. At night, the bars, theaters and restaurants are stages for live music for every taste — from big name performers to hometown legends. The music spills into the streets and shops and restaurants turn into galleries during Arts Arcata!, the second Friday of every month.
ENJOY THE ESSENCE OF THE REDWOOD COAST. FIND LOCAL SHOPPING, DINING, YEAR-ROUND LIVE MUSIC AND FESTIVALS, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURE.

Eureka This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts! Alive, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

Tour the former lumber company town of Scotia, with its rows of old, redwood houses, and see what’s going on at the Winema Theater, a gorgeous redwood monument to the heyday of the timber barons. Stop in Rio Dell for a dip in the river, unspoiled vistas and Arts on the Avenue along Wildwood Avenue the second Friday night of every month.

HUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK
Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, such as Reggae on the River.

South of the Avenue of the Giants lies Garberville, where you can escape the coastal fog, enjoy warmer temperatures and hit the farmers market for a treat. The little town has a surprisingly robust nightlife scene and a wild and beautiful landscape of hills and forest that you can sample in Tooby Memorial Park. Check the calendar and see what’s playing at the Mateel Community Center in neighboring Redway — the venue regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, including Reggae on the River.

Shelter Cove Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal coming and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination. Shelter Cove boat launch. Amy Kumler
