WELCOME Swami and Tim Blake. KIM SALLAWAY
T
he emerald cup is entering its twelfth year as the world’s largest outdoor, organic cannabis competition and celebration of the fall harvest. Each year we are reminded of how far we’ve come not only as an event, but also as an industry. Many were afraid to show up the first year of the competition out of fear that they might be arrested or filmed. This year we’re honored to have Fiona Ma, 2nd District Member of the California State Board of Equalization, who be joining us to talk about cannabis tax issues. Many of the world’s leading cannabis authors and researchers will be speaking on panels and workshops throughout the weekend. Folks like Jeffrey Lowenfels, Robert C. Clarke, Martin Lee, and Kevin McKernan will be on hand. And that’s only a small fraction of the speakers we have attending this year. After proving ourselves over the past two years with the fairgrounds, we’ve already been given our dates for next year’s 2016 Emerald Cup. It feels like we’ve arrived, and everyone wants to come to the party! And talk about a party! We’ve taken over the whole fairgrounds, added well over a hundred booths and doubled the number of food vendors to provide a variety of organic cuisine for you to munch on.
We’ve also brought in some of the best musical acts money can buy, sparing no expense to provide you with the best possible experience a weekend cannabis event can offer. I grew up in the cannabis industry as an outlaw, like everyone else in the cannabis business back then, and waited seemingly forever to see significant changes in our industry and culture. I now find myself trying hard to keep up with all the newly passed state legislation. The way we interact with cannabis and how it is viewed in California and the rest of the world has permanently changed, and there’s no going back. California, the most powerful state in our country and one of the most influential entities in the world, has finally given us their seal of approval. Cannabis cultivation is agriculture, and cannabis growers are farmers. We’ve always been farmers, just like the folks growing apples, grapes, and other crops, and we’re finally being given our long overdue recognition. There have been compromises to obtain this victory. We’re going to be taxed unfairly, many will be left out of the new marketplace, and big money threatens to eventually dominate our industry as it does in agriculture and most other
industries. The good news is that cannabis will no longer be categorized as being a nuisance (it never was in the first place), law enforcement will no longer have carte blanche to terrorize us, and we’ll be able to pay our taxes and openly contribute to society. Most of the cannabis farmers I have spoken to are truly looking forward to this new era! The way they’re setting up the new marketplace is along the alcohol distribution method, ensuring every last gram is tracked, taxed, and identified. Everyone has been selling their bud on the black market or begging for a local dispensary to carry their products, and that is going to change! You will have to deal with one of the few major distributors that will be left standing after they fight it out with each other for market share over the next few years. Branding will be imperative, organic bud will rule, and everything will be tested. Many pesticides and fertilizers, which may not be too harmful when ingesting, become really toxic when burned (myclobutanil to name one). Being a hardcore organic farmer, I see zero tolerance for any of the nasty chemicals being used on cannabis, or any agricultural product for that matter. Its time to stop poisoning ourselves and our planet, now! continued → the emerald cup 2015 9

WELCOME
I thought small cannabis farmers would have a much longer time to adapt, but after being asked by a traditional farmer with almost thirty thousand acres of land how many acres I wanted to grow with him, I quickly realized that there are going to be some really good, large scale operations sprouting up quickly. The state initiative that will likely pass next year is proposing a policy that will open it up for very large commercial farms across our great state. Small farmers, from the Emerald Triangle all the way down to San Diego, are going to have to be on top of their game to ensure a spot for themselves in this new, legal marketplace. The great thing about our newly legalized industry is that the number of people using some form of cannabis medicine will rapidly expand. The latest surveys report that the number of Americans using cannabis has risen from five percent to thirteen percent in just a few short years. It will reach twenty percent or more within a couple more years and continue to grow for years to come. As everyday folks realize how safe and effective it is to use, we’re all going to turn away from Big Pharma for many of our medical needs, and away from alcohol and hard drugs for our adult recreational use. There are new medical miracles being documented everyday from using cannabis therapy and it’s time for mainstream Americans to have reasonable and affordable access to safe, organic, and effective medicine! We all get to see first-hand the evolution of the cannabis industry at The Emerald Cup each year. One rapidly growing technique is light deprivation farming, which cuts back the hours of sunlight the plants get by covering them part of each day to induce early flowering, just like turning back the timing of the lights in an indoor operation. Once growers realized that they could replace many of the electricity-gobbling indoor grows with much more efficient light depos, it’s been off to the races. Much of the available farmland, from Eureka to Monterey and all the way to San Diego, will soon be dotted with cannabis fields. I can only imagine how large our industry will be five years from now! We will dominate the agricultural landscape and will easily be California’s largest grossing crop. For that matter it already is, we just haven’t been rightfully honored with the trophy. In years past, dried flower buds were the preferred choice for imbibing cannabis. Now oils are taking over the market, with over half the sales in many places. And that number will only increase in the next few years. Young adults from all over this country are just now entering the marketplace and didn’t

grow up smoking joints with their friends … they’re using solventless concentrates and vape pens with CO2 or butane extracted oil in them, and they’re doing dabs in high-end glass pipes. Bongs are quickly becoming a thing of the past. You date yourself just by the way you use cannabis. I didn’t make up the rules, I just have to accept them and go with the flow. In recognition of this, we’ve added a rosin and dry sieve contest to The Emerald Cup competition this year, and next year we’ll include a CO2 extraction contest, along with a category for clean, zero ppm-tested solvent oil. Oil is the way of the future for cannabis use, and the future came earlier than expected. Soon, most farmers will never see their flowers offered in a store. They’re going to bring them down to the local processing center and watch them get turned into oil of one form or another. There are so many innovative products coming online that we’ve also created a New Products category this year at The Emerald Cup. There is so much to learn, so many new cannabis strains to check out, and so many new businesses sprouting up. I’m jazzed about getting the chance to see you all here and to check everything out for myself. You will find everything from the latest tips for growing organic cannabis, to the latest medical research and up-to-date news on the legal front, not to mention the finest food and best bands we could find. I am honored by your attendance here at the celebration. We want you to learn about cannabis with us, and we want to help you become comfortable with the many aspects of cannabis. And for you leaders and experts in the industry, we wish to further your knowledge and abilities. I look forward to spending a joyous weekend with everyone! One Love, Tim Blake the emerald cup 2015 11
O U R P A S T , P R E S E N T & T H E F U T U R E in the fall of 2003, Tim Blake and a friend were discussing the fact that Mendocino had the best bud on the planet but no form of acknowledgment or celebration for it. That was when everyone was afraid of having a public competition. We put out no press – just some last minute posters and word of mouth – and 23 entries into the ganja contest came forward. The crowd was small, with very few even willing to be in the house with their faces seen, much less come forward for their prizes. Still, it was a wild night, everyone had a ball, and other than the inevitable undercover agents, it was pleasantly uneventful.
Laytonville and moved The Emerald Cup to up to Humboldt County at The Mateel Center in Redway. We were blown away by the turnout as people came from all over the state for our solventless concentrate contest and to honor the sun-grown cannabis movement, gaining us a lot of attention.
2015 The next year, we took the event public, putting up more posters, talking to more people, pushing the envelope. Slowly we crept into the light. Forty-three entries were put up, and the bud was overall much better than the year before, because growers had begun cultivating their plants in the full sun as opposed to hiding them under the trees. The show was headlined by the Avalon All-Stars with Vince Welnick (former keyboard player with The Grateful Dead and The Tubes) sitting in. By the third now-annual Emerald Cup competition, we all had medical permits, and everyone was growing in the full sun. Marijuana was blooming right into mainstream America. The fourth year we had 51 entries and in 2009 there were 99, all organic, grown in the sun as God intended. In 2010, we had our banner year of over 150 entries. In 2011, we started to incorporate more speaker panels throughout the day as educating our attendees became just as important as listening to music and celebrating. Along with the competition, we also chose to give out Lifetime Achievement Awards to some of our heroes in the cannabis industry who had dedicated their lives to this movement. Over the 8 years we had The Emerald Cup at Area 101, legends including Eddy Lepp, Jack Herer, Valerie Corral, and Ed Rosenthal graced our stage. In 2012, we finally outgrew our property in
The Emerald Cup again moved to a bigger venue in 2013, with hopes that the cannabis movement would grow with us. After we approached a few of the different fairgrounds across Northern California, the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa gracefully offered us a chance to bring our idea of a cannabis country fair to reality. It was a difficult choice for us to leave the Emerald Triangle, but serving our growing community with a bigger, better event made the move necessary. Last year, we decided to expand our contests to include organic edibles and topicals. Every year our entry numbers have steadily increased, but none of us could have predicted seeing 684 flower entries submitted in 2014. The new contests were also a huge success. We had the music acts, speakers, organic food, and vendors that we had always dreamed of back in our humble beginnings. With Tim’s daughter Taylor joining the team as Associate Producer, the Emerald Cup family had its most successful year ever! It’s amazing to see how far we have come over the past 12 years, and this year’s Emerald Cup is going to be better than ever! Our DJs and music lineup are incredible, and our discussion sessions and workshops are filled with nationally and internationally renowned experts. We’ve taken over even more of the fairgrounds with hundreds of vendors (both inside and outside the medical 215 area), tons of great options for organic food, two stages, three lecture halls, and much more. Our 13 competitions took in entries from across California – check them out on display at The Emerald Cup and join us to honor the best of the best at The Emerald Cup Awards on Sunday.
A huge thanks goes out to the countless family, friends, neighbors, and community members whose love and support enables us to produce this event each year. We are honored to serve the cannabis community with The Emerald Cup, and the possibilities are limitless as we look forward to future years in the new era of cannabis legalization.

TIM BLAKE Tim Blake started using cannabis in 1971. He grew his first outdoor cannabis crop in 1975 and has been a part of the evolution of our industry and culture ever since, witnessing every aspect the incredible journey it’s taken us on. That same year he also started doing transcendental meditation. Since then, cannabis and meditation have been an integral part of his daily life. A realtor in the late seventies, Tim was one of the founders and the CEO of several production companies in the early 1980s including a “New Age” distribution and production company, a Rap music label, and a video and music production studio. Tim is blessed to have three amazing daughters and six beautiful grandchildren. He has owned property in Mendocino County since the late seventies, finally moving up for good in 1992. In 1998 he bought an old campground and created “Area 101”, a spiritual sanctuary and event center for all faiths, devoted to personal growth and spiritual enlightenment. Over the years he’s produced a wide range of events, and created The Emerald Cup, the World’s Largest Organic, Outdoor Cannabis Competition.
TAYLOR BLAKE
Associate Producer Tim sponsored and helped produce the first gathering of law enforcement and cannabis farmers, to openly discuss how they would work together. This helped lead to the creation of Mendocino County’s 9.31 program, the first of its kind in our country; whereby cannabis growers could get legal permits from the county to grow organic cannabis. This, in turn, led to Tim and a partner creating the Mendocino Farmers Collective: the first collective that brought together outdoor, organic growers in Mendocino County, creating a way to get their products to dispensaries around California, which at that time were predominately featuring indoor grown cannabis. During this same time The Emerald Cup was growing into the event it is today. Later, Tim co-founded Healing Harvest Farms (HHF) a cannabis collective dispensary that is located at Area 101. He was a founding member of California Cannabis Policy Reform (CCPR), which evolved into CA Reform, and he was also a founding member of the Mendocino Cannabis Policy Council (MCPC).
Taylor Blake is the Associate Producer of The Emerald Cup, an all-organic, medical, cannabis cup held in northern California for the past 11 years. Taylor grew up in the cannabis industry and has been helping her dad, Tim Blake, produce The Emerald Cup for the past 7 years. She also has experience with cannabis cultivation on their family farm and currently sits on the boards of Healing Harvest Farms and the California Growers Association. Taylor graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Psychology, with Honors, and has worked with diverse organizations including the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

GLASS AWARDS

his year, as in previous years, the awards at The Emerald Cup are an important and unique part of the ceremony. Since I started this project in 2010 I’ve networked with the top Glassblowers in the Emerald Triangle to make this happen and provide all the winners in the competition a work of art they will cherish for life.
This Journey started for me in 2009 when I met Tim Blake at Area 101. We were talking about getting top artists to create the awards and I said one of my friends, “Banjo” might be interested. It just blossomed from there. I just want to give some thanks to the artists that have been a pleasure to work with presently and the previous years. Banjo, Mr Gray, PER, Steve Bates, Mike Warren aka “Millie Mike” and Darby Holm. Also for this year’s new artists, Jared DeLong and Bluegrass Man. Peace, Everlasting Love from Eric, “The Awards Guy”

Dragonfly Earth Medicine (Josh, Kelly and Sky) is a family owned run business and farm. We started growing food and medicinal plants in 1994 in Oregon. Taking Mother Nature’s lead, we grew and wild-crafted healing plants and mushrooms for medicines and food. This naturally led into healing works (home birth, midwifery, herbology, earth based body and mind health, moon cycles and organic gardening practices). We moved to the mountains of British Columbia in 1998. This is where our long-term dream of Dragonfly Farm was homesteaded by hand on a southwest facing slope using values, teachings and beliefs from permaculture, Eco building, natural farming, herbology for plants, mycology, soil building, seed saving, microbiology, homeschooling, self sustainability and closed loop systems. We grow huge medicinal cannabis plants using only plants to feed our crops because we do not have access to purchase nutrients because we are so isolated. This has led to a vast education in fermenting, juicing, burning, growing and wild-crafting our own nutrients. We thrive on education from Nature and love to share it. Stay tuned for our new book: Recipes for your Garden.

Asking Jeremy Plumb about cannabis is like drinking from a firehose. If there’s something to know about cannabis, he either already knows it or he’s in line to talk to the person who does. Known as one of the people behind the popular Cinex strain, he’s one of the few people in the cannabis industry about whom the conventional wisdom is unequivocal: He’s the smartest guy in the room, with degrees in cultural ecology and psychology, a wellregarded electronic musical project called Plumblyne, and time as a People’s Food Co-op board president and mental health counselor before he joined the cannabis industry. He’s at the forefront of agricultural sustainability and of codifying the complicated chemistry of cannabis’ uses in medicine and therapy.

The seeds of Rebelution germinated in Santa Barbara’s college town of Isla Vista in 2004. A student named Marley D. Williams had recently switched from baseball to bass guitar when, walking to choir practice one night, he heard strains of roots-reggae coming through a door. The fellow reggae enthusiast turned out to be Eric Rachmany. a devotee of roots-reggae and dancehall, and especially the music of Don Carlos and Black Uhuru. The nucleus of a new and innovative “California Reggae” band got rock-solid when Marley heard percussionist and drummer Wesley Finley’s impressive solos on a big African drum in a World Music class. At the same time, the bassist had befriended a local band featuring keyboardist Rory Carey, who soon became
Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electronica and world roots music, Beats Antique have shown zero sign of slowing their creative momentum since forming as a trio in 2007. Known for their masterful merge of modern technology and live instrumentation, the Bay Area trio combines live dance performance, brass bands, and glitch, string quartets and dubstep to create a world renown live experience all their own. The group now headlines various music festivals across the country including Coachella, Austin City Limits, Lightening in a Bottle, Hangout, Mountain Jam, Lollapalooza, and Electric Forest as well as various international festivals. The trio is composed of David Satori (banjo, guitar, saz, viola, andpercussion), Sidecar Tommy Cappel (keys, toy piano, drums, and percussion),and Zoë Jakes
another cornerstone of the budding Rebelution. The acknowledgement of injustice that deepens some of Rebelution’s stories draws on the roots-reggae tradition that inspired the band in the first place. Indeed, their love for the inspirational roots of modern Jamaican music have culminated in a collaboration with Don Carlos himself, on the jam-anthem “Roots Reggae Music.” Still, at heart, the story of Rebelution is a pretty easy one to understand. As the band embarks on its second decade, Eric explains, “Rebelution is a great example of four friends who got together to play music for the fun of it, and still do that today. We just play music that we really enjoy.”
(belly dancer, composer, and arranger). David Satori studied at California Institute of the Arts and Tommy Cappel studied at Berkeley School of Music before they ventured to locations such as Bali, West Africa, and Serbia. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation with skills born from Traditional Folk to Hip Hop and old school Jazz. Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised and taken to a place you hadn’t previously known existed. the emerald cup 2015 45

Light It Up, the new record from artist Collie Buddz, is momentous, gigantic and booming! It’s immediately undeniable an awe-struck song complete with an unforgettable singalong hook, the kind of beats that pound in the chest and a vocal performance that’s as uncommon as it is infectious. Produced by Neenyo, a protégé of hit maker J.R. Rotem, Light It Up easily goes from the car to nightclubs all over the world. Collie details his process, “As an artist, I want to expand musically. I’ll always do Reggae. I did Reggae music because I was good at it and that’s what I knew and loved growing up. But at the same time, when I put on my producer hat and I hear a riddim, it might not be in my comfort range, but whatever I hear on the track dictates what I’m going to make. I really only care about making good music. For that to happen, it can’t live in a box.” With his independent spirit guiding his journey, Buddz has traveled as far possible from
His first album with Nahko and Medicine for the People, On The Verge, came out in 2010, reflecting this exploration. The group’s second album, Dark As Night, followed in the spring of 2013 and further expanded on Nahko’s evolving ideas about self—discovery and acceptance. There is also an underlying theme of social and political change woven throughout the songs. Bridging the music and activism worlds, Nahko has promoted and raised awareness with organizations that range from climate change awareness (350.org) to a myriad of projects surrounding first nation rights, energy policies, environmental and social justice issues with elders such Winona LaDuke (www.honorearth. org) and birthing clinics (Bumi Sehat, Bali) to teaching cultural respect and accountability through music at schools all over the world. Medicine for the People is backed by the tribal hand percussion and rhythms of Hope Medford. Lead guitarist Chase Makai brings an edgy rock vibe to the Medicine sound, with his electrified 12—string acoustic guitar. “Through the years we’ve been fine tuning the purpose behind what we’re doing,” Nahko
his little corner of the earth. He’s constantly creating new music and experimenting with it in front of live audiences almost immediately. With support from his team at Mojiza Management and touring and merchandising backing at Ineffable Music, Collie Buddz has toured the world. He’s honed his craft while in support of several tours with artists such as Cypress Hill, Rebelution and Matisyahu. He’s performed in front of thousands at the largest music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Boomtown, Summer Jam and the California Roots Festival. While touring, Buddz still found time to record new material and release original music independently on his own record label, Harper Digital. He’s even managed to launch a new radio station back home in Bermuda (Vibe 103) and become a father. Armed with a tremendous record, it doesn’t appear that Collie Buddz will soon be finding time to rest.
says. “The oral tradition of storytelling is so important for our generation to bring with us. Part of what we try to convey is accountability and empowerment. These songs direct us to look at ourselves, whether it’s about a social issue, environmental or personal issue. They embrace Bob Marley’s idea of world-bridging, bringing people together to resolve differences. For us, music is a tool to create healing and activate people to change things.” The band has toured with SOJA, and internationally with Xavier Rudd, and performed at festivals such as Electric Forest and Wakarusa (USA), the Bali Spirit Festival (Indonesia) and Byron Spirit Festival (AUS), continually bringing a powerful catharsis to the audience. “I think our music promotes the bridging of all tribes,” Nahko says. “The lyrics and the stories and our energy as a group break down people’s walls. You’ll find us in the most unique places on earth because it’s real, raw and honest storytelling about what we’ve been through and what we believe in. And that’s why people connect with it. I think that’s the most important thing you can do with music.”

Revolutionary technology meets an evolutionary message in Papadosio. Melding progressive rock with psychedelia, folk with electronica, and dance music with jam, the quintet has amassed a dedicated following of thousands of likeminded individuals sowing the seeds of unity and spreading the sounds of exaltation. Singer-songwriter Anthony Thogmartin’s visionary lyrics, eclectic production, and signature guitar work are anchored by the rock solid battery of drummer Mike Healy and bassist Rob McConnell. The quintet is rounded out by brothers Billy and Sam Brouse, whose virtuosic two-headed keyboard, synth, and programming attack give the band its unmistakable complexity and intensity. The culmination of all that writing on the
road is T.E.T.I.O.S. The follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed Observations finally arrived in the fall of 2012. To End the Illusion of Separation is a sprawling double album, signaling not only an evolution of the band’s sound, but a paradigm shift on a far greater scale. The album is a call for people of all stripes to reject artificial barriers of wealth, class, and creed and come together under the flag of humanity. Themes of conservation, tolerance, and mind-expansion delicately weave their way around tribal rhythms, psychedelic excursions, and soaring melodies. The fusion of the earthly, the organic, with technological innovations and progressive sonic structure plants Papadosio’s roots firmly in the past and present with an eye turned towards the horizon.
There is an exciting resurgence of conscious, organic music in Jamaica and industry experts and observers agree that Protoje is playing an important role in what is becoming known as the “Reggae Revival.” Leading the militant band - The Indiggnation - this powerful songwriter and philosophical thinker articulates the righteous anger of an emerging generation. Protoje reports for duty, re-establishing the standard for the decaying art of socially responsible, mentally stimulating lyricism. After successfully releasing 2 Albums “The Seven Year Itch” and “The 8 Year Affair” which spawned Rasta Love ft Ky-Mani Marley and Kingston Be Wise; which was featured in Grand Theft Auto; Protoje releases his 3rd Studio Album titled ANCIENT FUTURE.
Fortunate Youth is a collaboration of South Bay reggae stand-outs. Rising from various bands, they’ve created a phenomenal 6-piece masterpiece bringing more fire to the stage than ever before. Combining rootsy vibes and unique bass lines united with multiple harmonies, boisterous guitar solos, and heavy keys separates Fortunate Youth from every other mainstream reggae band. With their high energy approach and positive stage presence they provide an unforgettable show to every music fan. Fortunate Youth’s objective is to ensure a performance that leaves you feeling euphoric and curious of what might happen at the next show.
Protoje’s visibility has steadily increased with articles being written in major publications ahead of his album release, and a major achievement was being named on BBC 1xtra Hot for 2015 Artiste list so he will be promoted across the BBC platform. Artistes were selected because As Mista Jams of BBC stated; “they’re producing the quality music needed to become big in the next 12 months. It’s a real cross section of really exciting new talent all currently on their A game.” Protoje has been gaining momentum throughout the world, performing at quality venues to large audiences and will continue to tour consistently with his band The Indiggnation to promote ANCIENT FUTURE especially in Europe where several tours have already been booked as they continue to spread the music.
2013 release, “It’s All A Jam”, hit numerous charts including #1 on Billboard Reggae Charts, #10 Billboard Pacific Heatseekers Chart, #23 Billboard National Heatseeker Chart along with #1 on iTunes Reggae Charts and #46 iTunes Overall Charts. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Kings And Queens is a synthesis of every aspect of John Brown’s Body’s storied career. It’s as if, after close to two decades of existence, this pioneering band has finally crafted their ultimate statement, tying together styles they’ve dabbled in, paid respect to, created, or pushed forward into one tightly woven mosaic. JBB’s Future Roots is now present tense. John Brown’s Body formed (in Boston in the mid 1990s) at a time when there wasn’t what you’d call a U.S. reggae scene. The American bands that played reggae were regional at best, touring little, and many were primarily cover bands of the best known Jamaican reggae. JBB was one of a handful of groups that began touring nationally and created distinctly
American reggae, steeped in traditional vibes but incorporating elements from other genres. Whereas most groups tackled typical reggae themes – religion and marijuana – JBB acted more like an indie band, writing songs that used the vocabulary of reggae to express their own experiences. Over time, this style has become the norm. The U.S. scene has grown tremendously – to the point of having two bands debut records in the Billboard Top 20 in 2012 – and many in the genre point to John Brown’s Body as a key influence. The band’s relentless touring schedule helped pave the way for the nationwide scene, showing other bands that it was okay to be from the Northeast and still be comfortable playing in California, Hawaii, Colorado or Iowa.
The five-piece band comprised of John Asher (Drums, Vocals), John Butcher (Guitar, Vocals), Roy Fishell (Organs), Chiquis Lozoya (Bass, Vocals), and Devin Morrison (Guitar, Vocals) have been making reggae fans and critics take note with their refreshing sound that references the “golden era” of reggae. Morrison and Butcher grew up listening to the record collection of famed reggae archivist Roger Steffens, and credit much of their love and knowledge to the accessibility and education of those experiences. Becoming friends with Steffens’ son, they developed an obsession with exploring the deepest reaches of the genre. The band is part of a burgeoning Los Angeles reggae scene that sprang in large part from The Blue Beat Lounge (the longest running
Things really started to move forward when Marv (Garrick Bushek) had a long conversation with beat maker Sage Lien at his house in the country near Eugene. The sprawling conversation naturally covered music, but the two men also gelled on broader topics and a mutual desire to change the world. Marv has long sought to bring together people from different backgrounds. His Imaginary Friends, at its peak, was a 12-member hip-hop orchestra. There were some legendary shows, but it collapsed under its own weight and ambition. Marv moved to Portland and started to network and play regularly, forming another band, the Platform. To him, WE Tribe is what he was trying to achieve when he started those other projects but he did not have all the tools yet to articulate what he
weekly ska night that happened at the Knitting Factory) and LA’s longtime premier weekly reggae night Dub Club held at the Echoplex. A song that was inspired by a key member of that scene is “Reggae Pops,” an infectious instrumental tune laid over a “steppers riddim” featuring John Butcher on lead guitar and Dan Hastie from Orgone on clavinet. The title was chosen as a tribute to the late-great Reggae Pops (born Nemencio Jose Andujar) who was a pillar of the Southern California reggae community for decades. Morrison states, “It’s impossible to accurately describe what he meant to reggae music in Los Angeles, but those who remember him from shows will never forget him. He was a dancer, a fan, and a presence that was always felt. He was the man!”
was going for, or needed others who were on the same page as he was. He has that now. He said this project feels like everything from his musical past is coming together. “The missing thing was me letting go,” Marv said. “Letting go of the reigns empowers everybody. That’s the ‘we,’ man. It’s something I’ve been growing to love. It just feels so good. This is the least challenging project.” Because of their mutual vision, Sage opened up his beat library to Marv. Hundreds of beats in a raw, gritty, crunchy old-school style Sage has hewn over years of intuitive beat making on his ASR-10 sampling keyboard. “I’ve been meditating on that unity message for a long time,” Sage said. “It’s about consciousness, healing, openness. We want to bring everyone in. No more judgments.” the emerald cup 2015 51
