Weekend 1 is June 3-4 and Weekend 2 is June 10-11. Studios are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. Join us this year for North Coast Open Studios Art Night, Friday, June 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A listing of participating artists and Art Nightspecific maps are on pages 4-6. North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide, you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios (their “natural habitats,” if you will) to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have an opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work in a wide array of art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, and more. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career
and emerging artists in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Talk to artists about their creative process, see their recent works, and purchase art.
WANT MORE INFORMATION? Visit our website at www. northcoastopenstudios.com for interactive maps, additional images, artist information, and more! Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook and Instagram!
HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community, listed regionally from South to North. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical index on page 9. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of
artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game on page 7), directions to their studio, contact information and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only, year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that many artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artists and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer!
North Coast Open Studios is a FREE event, so there is no admission charged at any venue.
THANK YOU to our community supporters for helping to make North Coast Open Studios possible! North Coast Open Studios is supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses, and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. Thank you to the NCOS steering committee, who help secure participants and sponsorships, talk sense into a very enthusiastic event coordinator, and distribute publications like pros. Thanks to Morse Media for the website hosting and the 101 Things Publication for the use of their wonderful maps, year after year. Thank you to our Guidebook Layout Goddess, Holly Harvey at the North Coast Journal, for our beautiful publication each year. Thank you to Libby Maynard at the Ink People Center for the Arts, through which North Coast Open Studios continues to be a nonprofit event, as a DreamMaker project (and they do our bookkeeping!).
Thank you to everyone who made the Art Show & Reception possible: Stonesthrow Boutique for hosting, Humboldt Cider Company, Cypress Grove Chevre, Beck’s Bakery, and all the wonderful volunteers who hung the show and helped work the event! Thank you to Natalie Craig for designing our poster, Lynn M. Jones of Just My Type Letterpress for once again creating our fancy Reception invitation, Visual Concepts for our big event banner, and Ryan Filgas for his time and photographic skills. We couldn’t do it without all of you (nor would we want to)!

The Steering Committee
The North Coast Open Studios volunteer steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. Thank you for all of the time and energy you have given to make Open Studios a reality for 2017.
Mary Bancud-Bettis owns Lotus Studio Pottery in Old Town Eureka. She is an alumni of HSU, CR, and Bellevue University. She helps the elder population at Humboldt Senior Resource Center and is raising two teenagers with her husband Jack. Mary’s passion for pottery helped her establish the Lotus Studio Pottery in April 2014. The studio offers classes to the community of all ages and all levels. The studio is open by appointment only. Larissa Haney participated in NCOS last year for the first time. She trained to be a botanist, but found herself to be an artist when she discovered her medium in succulent plants. She creates fluid planters out of cement and fabric, and plants them to be works of art using the fantastic shapes and colors of the plants to their best advantage. She makes delicate jewelry when she can’t garden and is currently dabbling in ceramics as a possible new medium. You can almost always find her in her garden, tending and creating new succulent displays. Since 2004 Jemima Harr has served as the Executive Director-Curator for the Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art. With degrees in Art History as well as Museum & Gallery Practices from Humboldt State University, Jemima has collaborated on countless museum exhibitions and programs, including with the San Francisco Airport Museum, the Triton Museum of Art, and the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at the University of California, Davis. In 2015 Jemima served as the North Coast region’s Learning Collaboratives’ facilitator, part of the California Networks for Collaboration, a program of the California Association of Museums. Jemima is currently serving a two year term as a board member for the California Association of Museums, and serves on the Eureka Art and Culture Commission. Libby Maynard is the Executive Director of The Ink People Center for the Arts and co-founder of the organization. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout California, and is in collections across the nation. Maynard is also a consultant in nonprofit management and program development, and serves on many community boards. Anna Oneglia is a painter and printmaker who has built a new studio behind her house in Arcata. She makes narrative, figurative artwork and is interested in making things that connect the community. Anna participated in Santa Cruz Open Studios for 29 years before moving back to Humboldt and getting involved with North Coast Open Studios.
Kristi Patterson is the founder of Trajectory, a program of The Ink People for emerging artists with disabilities. She is also the founder of The Studio and Cheri Blackerby Gallery. She spent the majority of the last year in Yucatán, Mexico, exploring the intersection of literacies, languages, and the arts. This is Kristi’s third year on the NCOS steering committee. Cheryl Rau has been making Art since she was five years old. A bit later, she decided she wanted to be a teacher. For a while the teacher part was her job, however, Art was always part of her teaching and living. When Cheryl retired a few years ago, she turned her garage into a studio and declared herself an Artist! She signed up for North Coast Open Studios. That year was a great success – she found her people. The next year, she not only opened her studio, but joined the Steering Committee. Teresa Saluzzo grew up in a family of professional artists and has been an artist for most of her adult life. She is a credentialed teacher, has a supplemental art credential and has taught whole school art programs. Teaching children art has been one of her most inspirational learning processes. Teresa has been a professional weaver, an award winning gardener, and now she is a full time working artist. She believes that art is not a rarefied intellectual process, but something that can be achieved by hard work and vision, with a good portion of laughter thrown in. The “sparkle queen of the North Coast” has been on the NCOS committee since 2009, actively encouraging other artists to thrive rather than just survive. In 2008, Christina Swingdler turned her hobby into a business by creating Christina Anastasia, known for extraordinary jewelry and transcendental paintings. For Christina, creation in all the forms it manifests – painting, jewelry, dance, music – is a meditation within her finite human form that explores the Infinite of which we are all created. This is Monica Topping’s fourth year as Coordinator for North Coast Open Studios. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from well over a decade of working in local media. She likes Eureka and joined the Eureka Art and Culture Commission in 2016. She also won the Victor Jacoby Award in 2016, to start melting recycled glass bottles into lovely colored beads. Monica created the 2014 “small town: BIG ART” calendar, a celebration of Humboldt County artists, and hopes to bring it back some day. She can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists.
Interested in joining the steering committee for our 20th Anniversary in 2018? Call (707) 442-8413 or email contact@northcoastopenstudios to find out more. NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS 2017
