To the 17th Annual North Coast Open Studios North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have a rare opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work from a broad spectrum of fine art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, furniture and ceramics. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career and emerging artists in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. The artists will be available to discuss their creative process, display their recent works and offer works for sale.
Want more information about North Coast Open Studios? Find more information on pages 4-5, or visit our website at www.northcoastopenstudios.com for interactive maps, additional images, artist information and more! Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook!
How to use this guide You can use this guide a number of ways. The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community, listed regionally from Southern Humboldt to Northern Humboldt. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical Index on page 37. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game), directions to their studio, contact information and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. Weekend 1 is June 6-7 and Weekend 2 is June 13-14. Studios are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artist and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer!

HE ARTISTS OF NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS
invite you visit our creative work spaces during the first two weekends of June. This is a fun and free event for art lovers of all ages and serious collectors. This self-guided treasure hunt will take you into the workshops and studios of working artists throughout the county. Each studio along the route will introduce you to artists working in a wide range of media — oils, watercolors, photography, sculpture, mixed media, fiber arts, ceramics, jewelry, metal, wood, glass and much, much more! Whether you are a long-time attendee or a first-time visitor, you will be impressed by the incredible range of artwork available to you during your visits. You may find an artist blowing glass, an acrylic painter at their easel, a tattoo artist working on a client, an artisan pouring chocolate … You never know what you will find behind the studio door. Visitors can view art and visit with artists all in an openhouse, informal environment.
T
his is your chance to meet the artists firsthand, explore types of work that are both familiar and new to you and support our local arts community by purchasing works directly from the artists. You can also take this opportunity to make an appointment to visit individual artists throughout the year, for an in-depth and ongoing look at their creative progress. Remember, there is no charge to the public — this is a free community event, provided by your neighborhood artists.
ORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS IS supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. Thank you to the NCOS steering committee, who help secure sponsorships, talk sense into a very enthusiastic event coordinator and distribute publications like pros. Thanks to Gabe Pressure of HiFidelity Design+Consulting for our modern and functional new website (www. northcoastopenstudios.com) and to Morse Media for the website hosting. Thank you to 101 Things Publication for the use of their wonderful maps, year after year. Thank you to Teresa Saluzzo, Carolyn Jones and Lisa Enge for their generous donations to our benefit drawing. Thank you to everyone who made the Artist Show & Reception possible: The Ink People Center for the Arts, John’s Fine Cigars & Myrtlewood Liquors, Dick Taylor Chocolates, MARZ Project, Cypress Grove Chevre, and all the wonderful volunteers who hung the show and helped work the event! Thank you to Natalie Craig for designing our poster, Elaine Benjamin of Blue Chair Press for creating our fancy Reception invitation, and Ryan Filgas, our awesome e-newsletter intern, for all of his time and photographic skills. I work in my studio, a sun lit space in an old Victorian in Fortuna. I work in oils, acrylics, and pastels, and dabble in linoleum cuts, printing, bookmaking and making jewelry out of vintage buttons. Art is too fun to not be playful. It all keeps me happy and out of trouble. My studio is open by appointment and during Open Studios.
Carolyn Jones creates in her Bayside Studio Ix Chel, home of her looms, award-winning hand spun yarns, artist supplies, textiles and artifacts gathered from her extensive world travels. Her vast collection of the works of local and regional artists adorns her studio walls and is truly an inspiration. Carolyn is a graduate of Humboldt State University and is a Mayan epigrapher, a writer, bird watcher and journaler, and is a consultant for health care facilities. She and husband Tom are supporters of the arts in all their creative forms and with two other local artists, Carolyn creates an annual limited edition, signed and numbered artwork in the form of a calendar, also available at her studio.
Whenever possible I create narratives in my mind for things that many people would not notice. Images I see readily lead to stories that can at times become outlandish. I love chickens, birds in general, art, monsters and stories of liberation. When I was a kid I wanted to be Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey when I grew up but am inherently a homebody – Africa was out. So instead of tromping through the jungle, I find interest in the wildness and social structure of my flock of hens, the raven family that circles my home, children that I’ve had the good fortune to watch grow up and all of you.
You may visit her on Facebook at “Teresa Saluzzo Winding Rose Studio.”
More information is at www.buttonwillowstudio.com.
Ceramic 4-piece whiskey set Value: $175
You may see her work on Facebook at “Lisa Enge - Bee House Pottery.” Artwork not to scale. *Frame not shown.

The Steering Committee
The North Coast Open Studios volunteer steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. Thank you for all of the time and energy you have given to make Open Studios a reality for 2015.
Susan Bloch is a sculptor specializing in sandcarved and engraved glass. Susan refined her mastery of glass carving by working on large and varied commissions for over 25 years. Bloch exhibits in the United States and abroad. Exhibitions include the Healdsburg Glass and Clay Invitational, Red House Glass Cone, UK, 2015; Morley Gallery, UK and Sebastopol Center for the Arts, 2014, among others. She is an advocate for the arts in Eureka volunteering with various arts organizations. Natalie Craig has continued creating her imagery in mixed media, collage, and drawing for years, exhibiting, and participating in arts residencies in the US, Africa and Europe. She believes in the wealth of the creative spirit, which provides her with the attentiveness to delve into her own work and gain great appreciation of others endeavors. Natalie is a first year member of the NCOS Steering Committee. Jemima Harr has been the Executive Director-Curator of the Humboldt Arts Council and the Morris Graves Museum of Art since 2004. An Art History and Museum & Gallery Practices graduate of Humboldt State University, Harr has collaborated on and curated more than 300 exhibitions throughout California. Libby Maynard is the Executive Director of The Ink People Center for the Arts and co-founder of the organization. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout California, and is in collections across the nation. Maynard is also a consultant in nonprofit management and program development, and serves on many community boards.
Cheryl Rau has been making Art since she was five years old. A bit later, she decided she wanted to be a teacher. For a while the teacher part was her job, however, Art was always part of her teaching and living. When Cheryl retired a few years ago, she turned her garage into a studio and declared herself an Artist! She signed up for North Coast Open Studios. That year was a great success – she found her people. The next year, she not only opened her studio, but joined the Steering Committee. Teresa Saluzzo grew up in a family of professional artists and has been an artist for most of her adult life. She is a credentialed teacher, has a supplemental art credential and has taught whole school art programs. Teaching children art has been one of her most inspirational learning processes. Teresa has been a professional weaver, an award winning gardener and now she is a full time working artist. She believes that art is not a rarefied intellectual process, but something that can be achieved by hard work and vision, with a good portion of laughter thrown in. Christina Swingdler took her hobby to the next level in 2008 and founded Christina Anastasia. Christina’s work explores the dance between color, texture and history, manifesting sumptuous, one of a kind, limited edition works that massage the senses while enhancing one’s divine essence. This is Monica Topping’s second year as Coordinator for North Coast Open Studios. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from more than a decade of working in local media. A couple years ago, Monica created the 2014 “small town: BIG ART” calendar. She can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists.
Kristi Patterson Konkler is the founder of Trajectory, a program of The Ink People for emerging artists with disabilities. She is also the founder of The Studio and Cheri Blackerby Gallery. As a writer and artist, she will be attending the Habla Institute in Merida, Mexico this summer to explore the intersection of literacies, languages, and the arts. This is Kristi’s second year on the NCOS steering committee. Interested in joining the steering committee for 2016? Call (707) 442-8413 or email contact@northcoastopenstudios to find out more.
