THANK YOU to our Community Supporters For Helping to Make North Coast Open Studios Possible!
ORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS is supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses, and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. Thank you to the NCOS steering committee, who help secure participants and sponsorships, talk sense into a very enthusiastic event coordinator, and distribute publications like pros. Thanks to Morse Media for the website hosting and the 101 Things Publication for the use of their wonderful maps, year after year. Thank you to
our Guidebook Layout Goddess, Holly Harvey at the North Coast Journal, for our beautiful publication each year. Thank you to Libby Maynard at the Ink People Center for the Arts, through which North Coast Open Studios continues to be a nonprofit event, as a DreamMaker project (and they do our bookkeeping!). Thank you to everyone who made the Art Show and Reception possible: Just My Type Letterpress for hosting, Humboldt Cider Company, Cypress Grove Chevre, Beck’s Bakery, and all the wonderful volunteers who hung the

Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook and Instagram! HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community, listed regionally from North to South. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical index on page 40-41. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game on page 9), directions to their studio, contact information, and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only, year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that many artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artists and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer! North Coast Open Studios is a free event, so there is no admission charged at any venue. ✦
show and helped work the event! Thank you to Natalie Craig for designing our poster, Lynn M. Jones of Just My Type Letterpress for once again designing our fancy Reception invitation, and James Bettis for promotional help. We couldn’t do it without all of you (nor would we want to)! Donations to North Coast Open Studios are appreciated and help us keep this nonprofit event going! They can be made to the Ink People Center for the Arts, 525 7th Street, Eureka, CA 95501. Please earmark all donations for NCOS. ✦

EEKEND 1 IS JUNE 2-3 and WEEKEND 2 IS JUNE 9-10. Studios are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. Join us this year for North Coast Open Studios Art Night, Friday, June 1, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A listing of participating artists and Art Night-specific maps are on pages 6-8. North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide, you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios (their “natural habitats,” if you will) to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have an opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work from a wide array of art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, and more. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career and emerging artists in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Talk to artists about their creative process, see their recent works, and purchase art. WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS? 20 Years of North Coast Open Studios!
A HUGE Thank You goes to Elaine Benjamin for letting us borrow her archive of past North Coast Open Studios guidebooks and brochures!
ORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS was started by local artists Sasha Pepper and Susan Fox, in 1999. The idea was to create an opportunity for visitors to view art, talk with the artists, explore the creative process, and expand their art collections. Sasha had lived in San Francisco and participated in the Open Studios event, there, before moving to Humboldt, and exploring the idea that a similar event – one that doesn’t revolve around street fairs – could be a good fit, here. Susan had a background in graphic design and drew the original event maps. Both

had art studios in the historic Buhne Building (referred to as the Art Center Building, at the time), in Old Town Eureka, alongside a handful of other artists. The event started with a one-day, self-guided tour of more than 40 artist studios between Trinidad and Fortuna, and east to Blue Lake. The following year, it expanded to a full weekend and 50 artists. By 2005, North Coast Open Studios was two weekends long, with more than 120 participating artists, and reached down into Southern Humboldt. After the first few years of the artists both coordinating and participating in the event, they
handed over much of the planning to Angeline Schwab, who built up the event in both artist participation and guidebook distribution with the help of local grant funding. This was the beginning of North Coast Open Studios being viewed as a destination tourism event, in addition to a celebration of the local art community. Taffy Stockton came on-board as coordinator in 2008. Taffy was just starting her own nonprofit consulting business, and hadn’t experienced North Coast Open Studios yet, but she quickly immersed herself in the local art scene. Taffy still owns the amazing art pieces she was lucky enough to acquire during her time with the event, and still attends NCOS even since passing on her duties after the 2013 event. In 2014, jewelry maker Monica Topping took over the coordinator/head art cheerleader

title from Taffy, and NCOS remains one of her favorite annual Humboldt County art events. Since she’s out at the event during its open hours, visiting and photographing as many studios as she can, each year, her own glass studio is open by appointment, outside of the event weekends. North Coast Open Studios has always relied heavily on artist-volunteers, who assist the coordinator, pour wine and help out with other event fundraisers, reach out to new artist participants, and distribute guidebooks around the county. The event’s sponsors keep North Coast Open Studios affordable for the artists and FREE to the community. Without our local artists and visitors, there would be no North Coast Open Studios, so Thank You for supporting this community event into (and well beyond!) its 20th year. ✦ Some of the 1999 NCOS participants, still part of the event in 2017. It should also be noted that NCOS Art Night overlaps with Trinidad Art Nights, also happening on Friday, June 1, from 6-9pm! A visit to Trinidad, on this night, is a great opportunity to catch live music and performances, open galleries, and a selection of North Coast Open Studios artists. The Steering Committee
The North Coast Open Studios volunteer steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. THANK YOU for all of the time and energy you have given to make Open Studios a reality for 2018.
Mary Bancud-Bettis owns Lotus Studio Pottery in Old Town Eureka. She is an alumni of HSU, CR, and Bellevue University. She helps the elder population at Humboldt Senior Resource Center and is raising two teenagers with her husband Jack. Mary’s passion for pottery helped her establish the Lotus Studio Pottery in April 2014. The studio offers classes to the community of all ages and all levels. The studio is open by appointment only.
Libby Maynard is the Executive Director of The Ink People Center for the Arts and cofounder of the organization. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout California, and is in collections across the nation. Maynard is also a consultant in nonprofit management and program development, and serves on many community boards.
Larissa Haney actually trained to be a botanist, but found art as a hobby and later a business when a health problem forced her to reevaluate. She first discovered succulents and makes fluid cement planters for her plantings. She has recently added a new artistic medium in Turkish-style watermarbling and teaching people to make elaborate water-marbling designs on silk scarves. The process looks complicated, but easily done for people from 3-93 (so far). Larissa loves helping people find a new and empowering art form.
Kristi Patterson is the director of Trajectory, a career development program for visual, performing and literary artists, and a DreamMaker project of The Ink People Center for the Arts. She is an artist and writer living in Eureka. Kristi is a member of the Northern Redwoods Book Arts Guild and the Ferndale Repertory Theatre Board of Directors.
Since 2004, Jemima Harr has served as the Executive Director-Curator for the Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art. With degrees in Art History as well as Museum & Gallery Practices from Humboldt State University, Jemima has collaborated on countless museum exhibitions and programs, including with the San Francisco Airport Museum, the Triton Museum of Art, and the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at the University of California, Davis. In 2015, Jemima served as the North Coast region’s Learning Collaboratives’ facilitator, part of the California Networks for Collaboration, a program of the California Association of Museums. Jemima is currently serving a two year term as a board member for the California Association of Museums, and serves on the Eureka Art and Culture Commission. Karen Mast’s art education began in 1973, with mentors who include Fred Dalkey, Abe Nusbaum and Wayne Thiebaud. In 1990, she was inducted into the “Who’s Who of American Art” in the Library of Congress and continues to work in multiple mediums. Learning, for Karen, is a lifelong process and in 2005 she attained an Art History and Religious Studies Degree from UC Davis. Karen’s other passions, besides creating her own art, are to mentor and support fellow artists and the arts.
The “sparkle queen of the North Coast” has been on the NCOS committee since 2009, actively encouraging other artists to thrive rather than just survive. In 2008, Christina Swingdler turned her hobby into a business by creating Christina Anastasia, known for extraordinary jewelry and transcendental paintings. For Christina, creation in all the forms it manifests – painting, jewelry, dance, music – is a meditation within her finite human form that explores the Infinite of which we are all created.
This is Monica Topping’s fifth year as Coordinator for North Coast Open Studios. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from more than 15 years of working in local media. She likes Eureka and joined the Eureka Art and Culture Commission in 2016. She also won the Victor Thomas Jacoby Award in 2016, and started melting recycled glass bottles into lovely colored beads, last year. Monica creates jewelry out of recycled and repurposed materials, under the name Rock Chick Designs. She can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists.
Interested in joining the steering committee for our 21st annual event in 2019? Call (707) 442-8413 or email contact@northcoastopenstudios.com to find out more. 42 NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS 2018
