Lexus GX460: Luxury SUV with Many Surprises By Ron Moorhead let us just say we are happy Lexus did not mess with a good thing when it decided to continue moving the GX460 into 2020 with few changes. In fact, this hearty, yet luxurious SUV has seen few changes to its basic platform for many years. It has, however, gone through styling and creature comfort advancements, keeping it in line with Lexus enhancing luxury. The Lexus GX 460 continues to be based on the same body-on-frame platform found on the immensely popular Toyota 4Runner. Granted, this architecture can be considered by some to be less than optimal. In this era of unibody platforms, a body-on-frame vehicle is thought to be old school. However, this platform is considered strong, nearly unbreakable, and the best for traversing rugged back county terrain.

IT Whatever E DO you drive, T. we’ ve got you covered!

Luxury off-road capability is nearly absent from the marketplace with only a few players in the segment. The Lexus GX460 is one that has the capability to shine if an owner gives it a chance, which rarely occurs. Few owners will ever tap into the GX460’s off-road capabilities. Be assured they are there if ever needed. There are few changes for 2020 on the GX460, which is powered by a tried and true 4.6-liter, V-8 gasoline engine. This engine in its present configuration produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb.-ft. of torque. While the GX460’s fuel economy may not be at the top of the list, it will

out perform many in hauling loads; this SUV is rated to tow up to 6,500 pounds. The Toyota 4Runner has a following the GX460 seems to not have, but should. We feel that if traveling in luxury with the ability to handle the rigors of offroading is a main factor in the drive, the GX460 is a perfect fit. After all, there are not many luxury vehicles on the market that come equipped with underbody skid plates. The 2020 Lexus GX460 is available in three trim packages. Though it is called the base trim level, this version is equipped with Lexus’ Kinetic Dynamic CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE →

Suspension System. It is a marketing long name for a system that improves off-road traction. You will also find a full complement of advanced safety features, along with an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system. The premium package includes heated and ventilated front seats, parking sensors and threezone climate control system. Our test GX460 was the Luxury version, which added auto leveling adaptive suspension system, power reclining and folding third-row seats, and leather upholstery. On top of those standard items our GX460 had options such as Mark Levinson premium sound, the Off-Road Package, and a rear-seat entertainment system. We also had the optional Sport Design Package, which gave the exterior of our GX460 a look that sets it apart from other GX460s. This package also added second row captain chairs. With the off-road abilities, the GX460 exhibits you would presume the ride quality would suffer. While it is not as smooth as you would expect a luxury sedan might ride, this SUV was quite comfortable on the highway. The 2020 Gx460 feels large on the inside, yet this SUV easily maneuvers through parking lots and back country trails, even in tight spots where we did not want the Nebula Grey Pearl paint to get scratched. The maneuverability is enhanced by the Multi-Terrain and Panoramic View monitors. That is an exceptionally long term for exterior

surround cameras. We are seeing these types of additions to more off-road packages. They give a real-time view of the exterior via exterior cameras to give the driver a better view of the terrain they are negotiating. We were thankful we did not see a need to experience Lexus’ Crawl Control system, but we have experienced it with other vehicles in the Toyota family. It is a system we are quite impressed with and the way we tested it was eye opening. We were able, with the manufacturer’s permission, to take a vehicle into a sand pit and bury it to the axles. This is a move that brings thoughts of dread into an off-roader’s mind. With a conventional 4X4, we would be spending a great deal of time recovering the vehicle and come out so dirty we would need to be sprayed down with a fire hose. However, with Crawl Control we simply selected the appropriate point on the control knob, took our feet off the accelerator and brake pedals, and allowed the vehicle to walk itself out of the hole we dug for ourselves. We found the GX460 to be exactly the vehicle we thought it would be. It is a luxury SUV equipped with plenty of luxury on the interior, good capable highway abilities and some surprising off-road abilities that gave us pause to appreciate a vehicle that may have slipped behind the curtain, but certainly deserves to be in the light. ✦ Copyright © 2020 autoreviewsplus.com

Big, late-fall kings will be making their way into the coastal rivers this weekend following the first real storms of the year. Pictured is Jeremy Baker, of Santa Cruz, with a nice king taken on the Chetco in 2018. Photo courtesy of Mike Stratman/Redwood Coast Fishing

IN THE NEXT ISSUE

NOW

Storms Will Kick Off Late Run of Fall Kings By Kenny Priest the season’s first sizeable storms are bearing down on the North Coast. And that means hard-charging, fresh-fromthe-salt king salmon — big and bright — will be making their way up all of our coastal rivers starting this weekend. So, if you see a steady stream of drift boats heading north on U.S. Highway 101, you’ll know why. The Smith and Chetco rivers should be fishable on Saturday, but both will be on a pretty decent rise. Both rivers should have fresh kings moving through, and expect plenty of debris and leaves, as well. As of Wednesday, the Smith is predicted to peak at just over 1,100 cubic feet per second on the Jed Smith gauge on Saturday evening. With the rain tapering off over the weekend, the river will drop slightly on Sunday. The next big weather system arriving Monday will put the river on an even steeper rise the first half of next week. The Chetco flows should mirror the Smith. Following a decent rise on

Saturday, it will drop on Sunday. As the rain ramps up on Monday, expect a steady rise all week and reaching roughly 5,500 cfs on Friday. According to Kathleen Zontos of Eureka’s National Weather Service, the North Coast will see pulses of rain Thursday through Sunday. “The bulk of the rain will fall on Thursday and Friday, with lighter rain in the forecast for the weekend,” said Zontos. “The first half of next week is looking wet as well before letting up late next week. For the sevenday period ending next Tuesday morning, the Smith basin could see 5 inches of rain. Here in Humboldt, 3 to 5 inches are likely and the lower Eel basin could see 3 to 4 inches. The Mad, Eel and Van Duzen rivers are all expected to rise slightly this weekend, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be enough to open them to fishing. With more rain coming early next week, they should open to

fishing next week, but don’t expect green water. Call the low-flow hotline (822-3164) before you head out to determine if your favorite river is open or closed to fishing.

Sport Dungeness crab update Conditions made for some tough crabbing over the weekend. Boats weren’t able to head offshore until Monday to set their gear due to extremely rough seas. Tim Klassen of Reel Steel Sport Fishing was pulling pots on Tuesday morning for clients and reported a solid 10-keeper-perpot average. Inside Humboldt Bay and some of the local estuaries reported some decent fishing with a few keepers per trap along with plenty of small ones. The keeper crabs are full and clean.

Fishing at the mouth and the Sand Hole was dead over the weekend, according to Britt Carson of Crescent City’s Englund Marine. “Up river, every hole is full of salmon but they are mostly dark,” said Carson. “Once the rain hits this weekend, those fish will be moving quickly to the spawning grounds. The hope is that there’s lots of new ones in the ocean that will come in with the increased flows.”

Chetco “The Chetco is full of salmon, with fish spread throughout the river, and should fish well if it opens this weekend,” said Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing in Brookings. “It could blow out by Sunday if the forecast is correct. Anything above 4,000 cfs this time of year will be muddy. Chetco kings will still bite in high flows on the softer edges of the long flats, like the Willow Run below Loeb Park and Moffett Rock. ODFW will make a decision to open based on the arrival of the storm, probably on Thursday or Friday.”F Kenny Priest (he/him) operates Fishing the North Coast, a fishing guide service out of Humboldt specializing in salmon and steelhead. This Holiday Season, Doctors Urge Public to Make Safety a Top Priority (statepoint) With COVID-19 infections at an all-time high, medical experts urge the public to make safety their number one priority throughout the holiday season. “Nearly a year into this pandemic, people are yearning for a return to normalcy. However, COVID-19 cases are surging and with flu season already upon us, bringing together people from different households during the holidays is far too great a safety risk,” says Susan R. Bailey, M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA). During this unusual year, the AMA is sharing top tips for a safe and healthy holiday season: 1. It may not be the way you’re used to celebrating, but consider limiting this year’s gatherings to just the people who live in your household. 2. If you live somewhere warm, you

14

may be able to add a few people to your plans, but only if your get together is outdoors and safely physically distant. 3. Take advantage of the video conferencing technologies available at your fingertips to bridge the distance between you and family or friends. Whether it’s watching holiday movies, unwrapping gifts or sharing recipes together, many of these traditions can still happen virtually. 4. Interested in holiday deals and discounts? Shop for bargains from home. And if you must go to the store in person and you’re at-risk, check ahead of time to see if there are special hours for you. 5. Consider additional outdoor activities that can bring together other people in your circle without the dangers of dining inside. Go apple picking, leaf peeping or hiking. Think beyond the

traditional holiday activities and start new traditions. 6. Disappointed that your usual large dinner is for a smaller group? You can still cook a large meal and share a portion with neighbors or friends. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends “delivering them in a way that doesn’t involve contact with others.” 7. Continue to follow everyday safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19: wash your hands, maintain physical distancing and #MaskUp. More health resources, along with tips to prevent the spread of COVID-19, are available at ama-assn.org. “Missing holiday traditions is difficult, but with top scientists and researchers working round the clock to combat this virus, I’m hopeful that by this time next year, friends and family will be together again, one way or another,” says Dr. Bailey. ✦

(statepoint) During the holidays, there are endless ways to show the humans around you how much you love them. Finding ways to extend the joy of the season to pets who are a part of the family takes a bit more creativity. Here are five ideas for celebrating with furry friends this holiday season: 1. Spend quality time together: Between shopping, cooking and decorating, the hustle and bustle of the season can be distracting. However, no matter what’s going on, it’s important to spend quality time with your pet each day. So, go on some extra long walks with your dog, extend your cat’s playtime sessions and brush your pet’s coat. These activities may help alleviate situational anxiety brought on by shifting holiday routines. 2. Pamper your pet: The holiday season can be tiring and stressful on every member of the family, including your

dog. Gift your dog relaxation and better health with Pet Releaf CBD-infused Edibites. Whether your dog is in incredible health or is experiencing discomfort, these chews offer a needed immune system turbo boost, making them a great daily supplement. Not only that, they have calming and soothing properties, which may help ease your pet’s situational anxiety should travel or houseguests be part of your plans this season. Containing human-grade ingredients, no fillers and no chemical preservatives, these handmade chews come in flavors like Peanut Butter & Banana, Blueberry & Cranberry and even Pizza! 3. Stuff your pet’s stocking: A whopping 72 percent of pet parents plan to give their pets a gift or stocking stuffer this holiday season, according to a recent Pet Releaf survey conducted by The Harris Poll. Not only is hanging a stocking for pets a fun way to include them in

a family tradition, it’s also a great opportunity to give products a test run. Look for pet products offered in trial or small sizes, such as CBD-inf used Edibites Hemp Oils, Liposome Hemp Oils, or Hemp Oil Capsules. 4 . D e c o ra t e safely: When selecting holiday décor, prioritize your pet’s safety above all. Steer clear of plants toxic to pets, like holly, poinsettias and mistletoe; and avoid stringy items such as tinsel, curling ribbons or other tree and gift trimmings that when ingested, can cause intestinal blockage. 5. HOME

Ensuring Your Home Heating Equipment Operates Efficiently All Season (statepoint) Want a snafu-free season of home heating? Better installation and quality service mean a longer life for your heating and cooling equipment, as well as increased energy efficiency and reduced energy bills. Not only that, regular service checks may actually detect problems before you notice them, and catching them in time may extend your unit’s life. So, what should you know before hiring an HVAC professional for your installation, repair or maintenance check? Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Ask for credentials: Make sure that the contractor has all the necessary permits to do the job. Find out whether they have experience with the maintenance, repair, or replacement of your existing system in order to prevent future mis-

understandings or technical problems. • Ask for guidance: In the long run, knowing how to service the system yourself will save you a considerable amount of money, making a good contractor one who will be there to guide you through the maintenance process. • Hire carefully: Be careful of the lowest bidder. Contractors who are charging more may be doing so because they are better qualified. You should read company reviews as well as ask the contractor if they have technicians certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE). NATEcertified technicians have demonstrated their knowledge of today’s increasingly sophisticated heating and cooling systems by passing a nationally recognized test developed and supported by all segments of the heating, ventilation

and air-conditioning industry. To find a NATE-certified technician in your area, visit Natex.org. • Take precautions: With a few precautions, you can safely hire an HVAC technician and have home repair work done during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just be sure to ask the contractor about their safety protocols. For example, do they do video conferencing for estimates? Do their techs wear masks, gloves and shoe covers on the job? Are they practicing social distancing? • Make smart upgrades: Newer units, especially those with ENERGY STAR labels, operate more efficiently, reduce your energy bill, increase your comfort and even help protect the environment. You may not realize the amount of money you waste with a unit that is less efficient by today’s standards, even

Convenient, Functional Gear Prepares You for Adventures or Emergencies (statepoint) The new normal and natural disasters are dominating the headlines. At the same time, consumers have embraced socially distant adventure travel. Whatever your reasons for wanting to be prepared, easy to carry, functional gear will prepare you for what’s to come. Whether you’re backpacking on your favorite trail or evacuating from a disaster zone, knowing your gear is protected from mishaps and extreme weather is important. Keep organizational packing tools handy, such as Reusable Rubber Twist Gear Ties that provide a versatile way to wrap and hang items. It may also be helpful to store a few Slidelock Aluminum S-Biners in your to-go bag to secure keys and water bottles. When it comes to waterproofing, gear should endure the harshest elements. Safe tap water is not a given on outdoor adventure trips or during natural disasters when local water sources can become compromised. Having a low-maintenance, longterm means to filter water, whether sheltering in place or on the road, gives you peace of mind. Ultralight and durable, the LifeStraw personal water filter straw lasts for up to 1,000 gallons of water — enough drinking water for an individual for over five years, and protects against bacteria, parasites, microplastics, dirt, sand and cloudiness. Another good choice for personal use — and great for hikes — is the LifeStraw Go Insulated Stainless Steel water filter

bottle, which not only protects against contaminants, but also keeps water cold for hours. With family or friends? Look for water filtration designed to accommodate many people, such as the LifeStraw Mission water purifier, which features a built-in backwashing system and removes viruses, bacteria and parasites.

mickey baker has owned The Strand — our local movie theater — since the new releases starred Virginia Mayo. The Strand, naturally, is an icon here. More than a few of our long-lasting marriages in the area began with a first date there. Most of us have consumed more than our share of Raisinets and Jujubes while watching Duke Wayne whip the bad guys. We know every inch of The Strand. We know where the rips are in the used-to-be blood-red carpet, which of the seats don’t fold all the way down, which seats are most secluded in case it’s a smooching date. It was ol’ Dud, back when he was about 4 feet tall, who discovered how to combine chewing gum and the lock on the back door to provide five-finger discounts for friends wanting to watch Victor Mature run around in a loincloth. The Strand, in other words, is a vital part of our past, if not of our lives today. We seem to just go rent those tapes and disks now and stay home and watch the newer films when we feel like it, and that might be because we now appreciate being able to stop the action for an occasional bathroom break now and then.

Attendance at The Strand dropped dramatically when home entertainment really hit a lick. But Mickey fought back. He tried the free popcorn route for a while. All he charged for was the butter. Attendance didn’t really pick up, and the popcorn bill was … well, appreciable if not staggering. Mickey now thinks he has the answer. He bought a disk player thingie that works on a big screen. Then he bought some old movies and lowered the price. The first night he did this was a triple header, and we all turned out to see our old heroes vanquish Nazis, solve the bank robbery in Cactus Gulch, and find out who really killed the big-city mayor. We paid too much for popcorn, but who cares? The Strand lives on, even if there is more gray hair there than at a Percheron horse show. Besides, when was the last time you saw The Duke standing 15-feet tall? ✦ Brought to you by A Cowboy’s Guide to Growing Up Right, from www.riograndebooks.com.
