kia dives into the full-sized SUV/ Crossover category in a big way with the 2020 Telluride. The great thing about the Telluride is it offers large SUV advantages without a hulking footprint. Plenty of big crossover features in a manageable vehicle. A major advantage to driving the Kia Telluride is it doesn’t drive like a large three-row SUV. Though passengers experience an open, un-crowded cabin, the Telluride drives as if it is much smaller and agile vehicle. That isn’t to say the Telluride is going to be the most satisfying vehicle out on back-country roads. Though it will surprise most drivers. The exterior design in its basic form is not revolutionary. It is somewhat boxy — even Kia media materials agree — with a large green house that offers excellent visibility from all seating positions. The front end is blunt, with an enhanced Kia-image grille. The Telluride’s uniqueness is in the details, like the great lighting both in the front and rear of the vehicle.

Lift the Telluride hood and you find a very capable 3.8-liter, V-6 gasoline engine that moves the vehicle with 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. These specifications tell you the Telluride can handle heavy loads with ease while offering up a reasonably perky drive. Telluride can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with the optional tow package. The power reaches the road via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The optional all-wheel drive helps stability, yet we would have liked to have seen more of a rear wheel bias than the maximum 65 front and 35 rear that engineers provided. Granted, the Kia Telluride is not meant to be a rugged rock-crawling, off-roader. However, with 8 inches of ground clearance, the Telluride will keep you going on many of those forest service roads that other crossovers only wish they could traverse. Another advancement that will certainly attract growing families is the

expansiveness found in the passenger compartment. The ability to seat up to eight is great but, unlike some other vehicles proclaiming that fact, the Telluride offers up more room to stretch out. The interior is roomy, giving passengers the feeling of not being confined or cramped. Optional second row captain chairs open the interior space even more with one less passenger. Kia offers the 2020 Telluride in four models or trim levels — LX is the base with an increasing volume of features as you move up through the S, EX and SX levels. Kia has equipped the base LX model with plenty of features so buyers will feel they are not settling for the basics. Standard features include things like 18-inch wheels and tires, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors and even adaptable driving modes. As nearly all vehicles are equipped, the Telluride also receives adaptive cruise control feature. I become universally annoyed with the fact manufacturers will not allow the driver to select a normal cruise mode or adaptable. I have interviewed

N O RT H COAST T R A D E R • D EC . 1 - D EC . 14 , 2 02 0

many vehicle engineers who have told me it would be an easy addition, but they get vetoed every time they discuss the prospect. The LX model also receives a nice package of safety equipment, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane assist, blindspot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and even drowsy driver warning. How the 2020 Kia Telluride rides and drives is at the top of our list of important factors. The suspension system is calibrated toward a stiffer ride, yet it isn’t disturbing. On rough roads, passengers will feel more of the road surface, yet it isn’t intrusive. In contrast, the suspension system aids in providing better handling on twisting two-lane roads. The 2020 Kia Telluride provides for nearly all the needs of a family, great abilities and accommodations along with one of the best warranties available, plus it is assembled in West Point, Georgia, right here in the USA. ✦ Copyright © 2020 autoreviewsplus.com

FISHING THE NORTH COAST

Kings Tough to Come by on Smith, Chetco By Kenny Priest

after being open for just over a week, salmon fishing on both the Smith and Chetco has proven to be challenging. By the sound of things, the end is likely near for the run of late-fall kings on the coast. Only a couple small storms hit the coast and dropped enough rain to open the two rivers to fishing. While the fishing window was very small, that doesn’t necessarily mean the number of returning salmon was small. Even during the low water conditions, salmon were seen making their way upriver on all of our coastal streams. Typically, the season’s

Minda Lawrence and Grant Vallier, of Lakeview, Oregon, hold one of the two kings they caught to limit out Saturday on the Chetco River while fishing with guide Michael McGahan of Wild Rivers Fishing. Photo courtesy of Wild Rivers Fishing

first big rains come in October, leaving us a good four-to-five-week window to fish. That hasn’t been the case the last few years as the salmon didn’t bother to wait for us or the strong flows to get them to their end destinations. On the other hand, as we inch closer to December, it’s time to start thinking about winter steelhead. There are some half-pounders around, and the adults typically start showing up in December.

slow side out of Eureka. “We’re still getting limits but it’s getting a little tougher,” said Klassen. “We’ve only had one trip where we didn’t get full limits. On an overnight soak, we’re averaging between four to six keepers per pot. Longer soaks are definitely producing better results. There are a lot of small crabs that are chewing up the bait pretty quickly. Fresh bait, like tuna scraps or rockfish carcasses, will improve the number of keepers as well. The crabs are in great shape, but we aren’t seeing very many jumbos.”

The Rivers:

Smith Since it opened to fishing Nov. 14, salmon fishing has steadily gotten tougher. There are some fish around but most of the boats are having a hard time getting one per trip. Flows were down to 1,200 cubic feet per second on Monday and the river is low and clear. Roe under a float or back-bouncing the deeper holes are your best bets until we get some significant rainfall. Chetco/Elk/Sixes The Chetco opened to salmon fishing last Tuesday but quickly blew out, reports Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. He said, “After cresting at 12,000 cfs, flows dropped below 5,000 cfs on Friday and were down to 2,200 cfs on Sunday. Overall, fishing has been slow but a few nice kings are being caught. The best action is on the lower end. The Elk is now low and clear, while the Sixes is low but fishable. The Sixes has been fishing the best of the Southern Oregon rivers.”

Can I Legally Fish Three Species at Once? Fishing for three species at once?

I believe it would be legal to first catch sanddab and squid with multiple hooks, and then switch over to a two-hook rig for rockfish? (Michael) Answer: The setup you described would work. The general regulation is that you can use any number of hooks and lines to catch finfish in ocean waters, per California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 14, section 28.65. But there are exceptions. When fishing for or in possession of rockfish, you may use only one line with no more than two hooks. There also may be geographic limitations. For example, if you are fishing in the San Francisco Bay you may use only one line with not more than three hooks. See section 28.65 for additional restrictions. You also must adhere to the regula-

tions for each species you mentioned. There’s no bag limit for sanddab in California, per CCR Title 14, sections 28.48 and 27.60, and no possession limit, per section 27.60(a). And while there’s no general bag limit on the take of squid (see CCR Title 14, section 29.70), there are geographic limitations (see section 29.05). The limits on rockfish are more complex. When fishing in the ocean you can take no more than 20 finfish, with no more than 10 of a single species, per CCR Title 14, section 27.60. There are a number of laws that aggregate several species into a limit such as the Rockfish/ Greenling/Cabezon Complex limit of 10. Bottom line: There’s nothing preventing you from first catching sanddab and squid using multiple lines and hooks, then switching to a two-hook rig for rockfish. You can fish for sanddab, squid and rockfish in the same day as long as

you adhere to the most restrictive method of take for the species you are fishing for or have in your possession.

When is it ok to borrow a shotgun?

Question: I’d like to know if I can borrow my dad’s shotgun to go hunt dove. My dad is not going this year since he is busy. I have my hunting license and a Firearm Safety Certificate, too. (Ricky) Answer: California’s second hunt period for mourning dove, white-winged dove, spotted dove and ringed turtle dove runs from Saturday, Nov. 14 through Monday, Dec. 28 this year – and yes, you can borrow your dad’s shotgun, under California Penal Code, section 27880! Penal Code, section 27545 requires that in most situations, the sale, loan or transfer shall be completed through a licensed firearms dealer. But according to section 27950, “section 27545 does not

State fishing records

Question: I would love to know what the record is for largest yellowtail. Where would I find that information? (Todd) Answer: CDFW maintains a webpage with all of our state fishing records, as well as instructions for submitting new records. We keep records for both ocean diving and angling, as well as freshwater angling. You’ll see on the list that we have two records for yellowtail. The ocean angling record is 63 lbs., 1 oz., caught off of Santa Barbara Island in 2000. The freediving record is 65 lbs., caught near Cortez Bank (San Diego) in 1988.

Archery vs. “General” season

Question: I have a question about

the tree squirrel regulations. I know archery season is Aug. 1 through Sept. 11, and general rifle season is Sep. 12 through Jan. 31. After the archery season for squirrel closes on Sept. 11 and general rifle season opens, can you still hunt with bow instead of rifle until Jan. 31? (Tony) Answer: Yes, you can archery hunt during both periods. The first half of the season is actually called “Archery/ Falconry Only” season, so those are the only methods of take allowed during that time. “General” season, which opens on Sept. 12, allows for all three methods of take: archery, falconry and firearm. ✦ California Outdoors Q&A is published biweekly on Thursdays. If you have a question for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, please feel free to ask us via email at CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov. While we cannot answer every question, we will answer a few in each column.

DIY Weatherization Tips to Keep Your Home Cozy All Season Long (statepoint) As temperatures fall outside, it’s time to get ready for the chillier months ahead. Most homeowners want to keep their home cozy and their heating bills low during the winter, but struggle to keep the warmth in and the cold air out. Weatherizing can seem daunting, but there are many benefits -from reducing drafts to lowering energy use. Follow these low-cost tips to protect your home and your wallet.

Windows add charm to any residence and provide protection from the outdoors, but also account for a significant amount of heat loss in the winter. Heat gain and loss through windows account for 25% to 30% of residential heating and cooling energy use, according to the U.S.

Department of Energy. Even if your windows are in good condition, window insulation kits are easy, do-it-yourself solutions that will save you from sky-high heating bills, keep you comfortable and help with energy efficiency all winter long. Try Duck Brand Max Strength Rolled Window Insulation Kits, which add a barrier and create an airtight seal between the outdoor air and your home’s inside. The film comes with a pre-taped edge for quick and easy roll-on installation. Want to check and see if you have a problem with insulation? Hold an incense stick near windows, doors and electrical outlets. If smoke blows sideways, you have an air leak.

Deal with Drafts Doors are one of the largest sources of drafts in any home and should be a top priority for homeowners this winter. From draft seals to door sweeps, there are many DIY weatherization solutions to choose from that are easy to install and don’t require measuring or tools. Draft seals slide under doors, are removable, machine washable, petfriendly and don’t damage door frames. For example, Duck Brand’s Double Draft Seal insulates your door from both sides and blocks winter drafts, dust, insects and pollen for year-round protection.

Don’t Let Air Sneak Through Cracks While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to check for any cracks and gaps around doors and windows that can lead to heat loss. Weatherstripping doors and windows can save homeowners money. In fact, air sealing an old or drafty house can save up to 20% on your heating bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. While there are a variety of gap seals to choose from, rubber gap seals can stand up to extreme temperatures that cause other seals to freeze or crack. Duck Brand Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip Seals work well for sealing large gaps or sprucing up old or damaged door and window seals. For a project selector, articles, howto guides and instructional videos for more DIY weatherization inspiration, check out Duck Brand’s Weatherize page at duckbrand.com/weatherize. Can You Recognize Signs of Stroke? (statepoint) Many people are avoiding in-person doctor’s visits to limit potential exposure to coronavirus — or are simply ignoring health concerns altogether. However, when it comes to medical emergencies such as stroke, immediate medical attention is critical. The fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., stroke occurs every 40 seconds and it can happen to anyone, of any age, at any time. When 59-year-old Paul “David” Dyches had a stroke on the job this past August, he quickly realized something was very wrong. “I never experienced a feeling like this before, and I knew we had to do s o m e th i n g r i g h t away,” says Dyches, who was experiencing classic stroke symptoms of weakness in his arms and legs. Upon his arrival at the hospital, he was evaluated via tele-neurology by experts over 150 miles away. After doctors confirmed he was experiencing a stroke, they delivered treatment immediately and he was able to be discharged the following day. While in some cases quick action can help with recovery, statistics suggest that many Americans may be avoiding hospitals when they need them most due to anxieties surrounding the pandemic. A recent

study published in “JAMA Internal Medicine” showed that emergency room visits to five major healthcare systems decreased by more than 40 percent as COVID-19 cases spiked. As patients such as Dyches are learning firsthand, hospitals have a range of protocols in place to help keep patients and staff safe from coronavirus infection. “The hospital staff set me at ease right away,” says Dyches. Beyond pandemic fears, one age-old barrier to seeking timely medical attention for stroke is simply awareness of signs and symptoms. While Dyches can

credit himself with recognizing a classic symptom — arm and leg weakness — and reacting rapidly, only one in five U.S. adults are able to recognize 10 signs and symptoms of stroke, according to a nationwide survey*. What’s more, nearly 70 percent of the survey respondents say they’re knowledgeable about stroke, yet 62 percent falsely believe that signs of stroke come on slowly over a day or two, when in fact symptoms of stroke can come on suddenly. Experts say that immediate medical attention, which is vital, relies on everyone learning and being able to recognize the BE FAST signs and symptoms of a stroke in themselves and others and calling 911 immediately. BE FAST stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time and refers to these signs of stroke: • Balance: Sudden loss of balance • Eyes: Loss of vision in one or both eyes • Face: Face looks uneven or droopy • Arm: Arm or leg is weak or hanging down • Speech: Slurred speech, trouble speaking or seems confused • Time: Immediately call 911 For more shareable information and resources, visit Strokeawareness.com, developed by Genentech Inc, a member of the Roche Group. “I am a testament to the fact that emergencies like stroke don’t stop for a global health pandemic,” says Dyches. “Anyone who experiences stroke symptoms should call 911 and get themselves to the ER as quickly as possible.” BE FAST ” was developed by Intermountain Healthcare, as an adaptation of the FAST model implemented by the American Stroke Association. Steps Everyone Can Take to Help Prevent a ‘Twindemic’ (statepoint) In the 2019-2020 flu season, influenza caused up to 22,000 deaths in the U.S. This year, with so many medical resources being used to care for COVID-19 patients, it’s especially important to protect yourself from the flu. The annual flu vaccine can help protect you from the flu and lessen severe flu symptoms. It’s not too late to get a flu shot, and there are a number of reasons you should get yours now, if you haven’t already. 1. You’ll save life-saving resources for COVID-19 patients. Last flu season, influenza sent more than 400,000 people to the hospital with flu complications. By protecting yourself from the flu, you can help save those life-saving hospital beds and ventilators for individuals who may contract COVID-19. While we anxiously await the arrival of a COVID-19 vaccine, there is one vaccine already available that will protect your lung health this winter: the flu shot. 2. Chronic health conditions make flu symptoms worse – and deadly. The flu can worsen symptoms of chronic

health conditions, such as lung or heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Multiple studies have shown an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in the first few days following the flu, and it can lead to complications among people with diabetes. The flu can also exacerbate symptoms of respiratory disorders, such as asthma and COPD and can lead to pneumonia. Personal stories about individuals who were impacted by the flu can be found by visiting the American Lung Association’s GetMyShot.org. 3. Adults over 50 are at higher risk. As we age, our immune systems decline and weaken, placing older adults at greater risk for catching the flu and having severe complications. Over 65% of those hospitalized last flu season were adults over 50. Vaccinating against influenza helps reduce the risk of hospitalizations and dying from the flu for older adults. Yet, despite these benefits, in 2019-2020 only 50% of adults ages 50-64 got their flu shot. 4. Flu shots protect those around you. Similar to COVID-19, the flu is spread from person to person. By getting a flu

shot, you are helping reduce the spread of the flu and protecting your family and friends! For additional information about the flu, visit www.lung.org/flu. For flu shot resources, including finding a location near you to get a flu shot, visit www.getmyshot.org. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu shot every year.

Keep Your Home Network Secure With These Simple Steps (statepoint) Working and learning from home is the new norm for millions of American families. They’re engaged in a daily juggling act, making sure everyone has the bandwidth and privacy to complete their work, whether it’s the latest algebra assignment or the monthly all-staff meeting. Add in streaming services, online shopping and an assortment of other digital activities and it’s easy to see why cybersecurity might become an afterthought. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what cybercriminals and hackers are counting on. The FBI has reported a rise in the number of online fraud schemes related to the coronavirus with the intent to steal money, personal information or both. “The digital nature of everything we do makes it essential for all of us to

understand the basics of cybersecurity and to put some simple practices in place to keep our families safe,” said Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO of CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association. According to cybersecurity experts at CompTIA, a good first step is to check how old your equipment is, whether it’s your own, rented or leased from an internet service provider. Routers, modems, switches, access points or any other device hooked up to the home network should be less than five years old. Anything older should be replaced because its built-in security protections are woefully outdated. Strong passwords are critical throughout your home, starting with your Wi-Fi network. Don’t name your home network “try and hack me” or in-

N O RT H COAST T R A D E R • D EC . 1 - D EC . 14 , 2 02 0

clude personal information in the network name. You don’t want to call any attention to yourself via the network name. Be sure to check the encryption level for your home wireless network. At the very minimum you want the encryption option set to WPA2. Factory-installed default passwords and settings on digital equipment are an open invitation to hackers. This information is often found online, making it easy for hackers to access your network. If any of your home network equipment still relies on the password it had when installed, change the password. Creating passwords is always a matter of balancing security and convenience. While simpler passwords are easier to remember, they’re less secure. On the other hand, you don’t want to make them so complicated you’ll have trouble remembering them. Set passwords to something that’s a little challenging, but that you’ll remember. Whenever you receive notification about a security patch or software update, make sure you install them right away. Companies make these updates available when they discover bugs to fix or security holes to fill. It’s a good practice to have your router and other devices set to automatic updates so the latest security patches and software updates are installed soon after becoming available. To learn more of the basics of cybersecurity, visit The Future of Tech at futureoftech.org. With the widespread use of digital devices, it’s easy to lose track of everything that’s connected to your home network. Take a regular inventory and if you see something that shouldn’t be there, block it or remove it from the network. Finally, review your security settings at least once a year. Take the time to look at all of the settings to make sure everything is in order. With the uptick of online fraud, beefing up your home cybersecurity measures is more important than ever. F

LIVING

Helpful Winter Weather Tips From the Meteorologists (statepoint) Preparing for unpredictable winter weather? Take stock of your home, vehicle and planning tools to ensure your family stays safe and warm all winter long. Luckily, AccuWeather’s expert meteorologists know a thing or two about predicting the unexpected. They shared their top winter tips.

Stay Safe on the Road

If you’re among the 74% of Americans planning to travel for the holidays, the AccuWeather app’s MinuteCast forecast can help you predict when to hit the road. It provides a constantly updating minute-by-minute look at precipitation over the next two hours (soon to be expanded to four) locally and at your destination. AccuWeather meteorologists make sure they’re prepped for the road before leaving. “If your car’s snow accessories have been sitting for a long time, it may be wise to make sure they’re in proper working order,” recommends senior meteorologist, Paul Pastelok. This may include checking whether it’s time for an oil change. In snowy climates, outfit your car with winter tires, which can withstand winter weather more effectively than all-season tires. Whether or not you’re traveling, ready your car by monitoring tire pressure, testing your car battery, keeping an eye on windshield and wiper blades and adding a coat of wax if you can.

the house safe. AccuWeather meteorologists have some simple hacks for preventing messes such as frozen pipes, broken radiators, flooding and leaks. “Replace worn out weather stripping around windows and doors,” says AccuWeather senior meteorologist, David H. Dombek. “Also, ensure your rain gutters are cleared of leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters can lead to problems when it comes to snow, ice and below freezing temperatures.” To prevent clogged drains, you can make a simple, environmentally-friendly mixture of salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar, then pour it into drains once a week. Opening cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom can help circulate warmer air around plumbing. In frigid conditions, let a bit of water drip from faucets, especially where pipes aren’t insulated. You can also unhook garden hoses before the first hard freeze to prevent busted pipes. For older furnaces that may need replacing, schedule a tune-up. Senior meteorologist Alan Reppert also makes sure to clear leaves and snow away from his heat pump to ensure air flow. “Anything in the way of air flow can affect your heating system’s efficiency,” he notes. To track rain, snow, cloud cover and potentially dangerous conditions so you can get the house winterized, use the mapping features on AccuWeather.com and on the app.

Plan Ahead to Dine Outside

With COVID-19 cases on the rise and restrictions on indoor dining in effect na-

tionwide, dining out can require advanced planning. When eating outdoors, factor in the variables associated with unpredictable winter weather. AccuWeather’s forecast provides info needed to plan a week out—plenty of time to make that reservation. Meteorologist and emergency preparedness specialist Becky DePodwin also recommends checking AccuWeather’s RealFeel Temperature to determine what it’s actually going to feel like tableside. This can help you decide whether to venture outside, bring a blanket or opt for takeout. “Oftentimes in winter, especially if there’s any amount of wind going on, the temperature’s not going to be an adequate indication of what it feels like outside,” she says.

Get an Insider View

A one-size-fits-all weather report isn’t sufficient when it comes to planning. AccuWeather’s Winter Center page provides detailed winter weather predictions just like a meteorologist would, with everything from the newly added ice accumulation tracker to the wind speed calculator. You can also find forecasts designed for specific interests and needs, including the outlook for holidays, snow sports and longer-range looks at the months ahead. All of AccuWeather’s winter prep resources are available at AccuWeather.com/en/us/ Winter-Weather. No matter what your winter plans are, you can plan with confidence like a meteorologist, for a safe, warm winter. F

wouldn’t it be nice to come and go like gentle snow? Not the hard, wind-driven kind, but the soft kind … the kind that’s nice to kids and dogs. The kind of snow that builds up slowly on the porch railing until it is about 6 inches deep and bereft of bird tracks. Then we can scoop some into big cups and pour some syrup or honey on it and once again taste our way back to childhood. We can do it even when our beards are as gray as mine is these days. I’m told a lot of folks hate seeing those black and gray clouds moving in. For them, it means a cessation of warmth, a lack of green. It means the swimming hole down on Lewis Creek will belong to the muskrats and the huge trout we call The Lunker. For a few months, anyway. But children have a grand time in gentle snow. It’s the time of snowmen, and snowball fights, of sliding down the hill on your sled. We’ll go down a steeper hill this year so we can be really fast. It gets dark early these days, of course, but somehow that’s not really a problem. Through the vagaries of the mysterious onset of winter, we discover that darkness shuts down our outdoor fun at about the same time Mom has supper ready. It’s a blending of times. It’s a magical mix that makes us jump out

of bed each morning to see if there’s new snow outside. We can handle it, you know. We don’t even talk about it. Somehow that would be profaning the experience. Because soft, gentle snow tucks us in for the winter and makes us feel loved. It is a gift … just for us. It’s magic. ✦ Brought to you by Dogsled, A True Tale of the North, by Slim Randles.
