2020 Honda Civic Si A Competent Sports Sedan with Sports Car Attributes Story and photos by Ron Moorhead if you have been looking for an additional vehicle or thinking of making a change in what sits in your driveway, you know there are not many bargains. Head to your local dealer showroom where you may very well be astounded at the window stickers of most vehicles. At least this can be said for those vehicles most enthusiasts would like to own. There is at least one surprise for those who consider themselves drivers over just consumers. It comes in a package most might not think of when considering spirited automobiles. The Honda Civic generally is thought of as a

very sensible and smart purchase. And, indeed it is, but you get even more when you tack the Si badge on the end of its name. Granted, you could say the Civic Type R is the fastest and most performanceladen Honda, and you would be spot on. However, if you are looking for performance and sensible in the same package

it would be wise to look toward the Si. The 2020 Honda Civic Si carries a respectable price tag of just over $26,000 and is packed full of so many features you might wonder how they did that. To put a little perspective in here; the Civic R carries an extra 100 horsepower, 306 to be exact, while the Civic Si oﬀers up 205 CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 →

Though we love the thought of having that extra horsepower we are sure that most owners will be even more excited about keeping that 10 grand in our pockets. We spent a good bit of quality road time in the 2020 Civic Si and can honestly say, we enjoyed every minute. Well, nearly all since we did spend a little time sitting in traďŹ&#x192;c on our way to our favorite fun country roads. Thank goodness it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long; soon we were able to unleash the Civic Si and let it show just how well it can handle the fun stuďŹ&#x20AC;. The engine responds to right pedal input immediately and the shifter for the manual transmission (yes, we said manual) is smooth, quick and precise. The combination of performance, handling and design give the 2020 Civic Si characteristics that few vehicles in this category can meet. The 2020 Civic Si receives a few updates to exterior, which include revised front design with body-color and black trim. New LED headlamps with new LED fog light lend an edgier look. As expected, Honda piles on the interior features and here we see updated sport seats accented by red trim. These bucket seats are firm without being stiďŹ&#x20AC;. They hold you and your passenger in place during more aggressive cornering while oďŹ&#x20AC;ering comfort on longer more mundane trips.

Question: Over the years I’ve spoken to many people who are certain that the use of trail cameras during hunting season is a violation of California Fish and Wildlife regulations. Is this true? (Josh) Answer: It is not a violation to use trail cameras during hunting season in California. The use of cameras can be described as “digital scouting,” meaning hunters might post a camera in an area to identify what type of game may be present, or a non-hunter may simply want to determine the level of wildlife activity. The cameras are motion-activated and are generally used to help hunters plan their trips. Some of the newer models allow hunters to check images remotely. Older cameras required the hunter to physically travel to the camera

They help control populations of species such as urchins and mussels, which in turn allows other species to thrive. Unfortunately, in 2013 and 2014, sea star populations experienced massive die-oﬀs due to a wasting disease which is still aﬀecting them today. Some species of sea stars on the West Coast have seen drastic declines in abundance. Given the health of sea star populations and their importance to the marine ecosystem, CDFW encourages coastal visitors to not disturb sea stars if they are encountered.

Reduced-fee sport fishing licenses

Question: I’m 94 years old and still enjoy fishing, but the license cost is a very big chunk out of my fixed income. Why doesn’t CDFW issue free licenses for us old geezers? I only am able to fish once or twice a year and the oneday fee limits me severely. (Don) Answer: CDFW does indeed oﬀer a Reduced Fee Sport Fishing License (currently $7.73) for low-income California residents, 65 years of age and older, who meet the specified annual income requirements. Normally applicants are required to present their proof of eligibility in person in order to apply. Because offices are currently closed, you may submit an application by mail to any CDFW License Sales Oﬃce. Your application must be accompanied by verification of your currently monthly Social Security benefit and verification of your currently monthly income from all other sources. Ingredients: • Essential BBQ Rub or poultry seasoning • Chicken wings • Sauce of choice • Bear Mountain’s Savory BBQ Craft Blends pellets Preparation: 1. Lightly coat wings in seasoning. 2. Arrange wings on smoker or grill at 225 degrees with at least 2 inches of space between. 3. Smoke for 1 to 1.5 hours. 4. Turn up grill to 350 degrees to finish. Start brushing on sauce and turning wings periodically. 5. Once wings hit an internal temperature of 165, remove from the smoker or grill and toss in a bowl with remaining sauce. Then they’re ready to serve! No pellet grill or smoker? Try using Smoke ‘Ems wood pellet packets in this recipe in the following way: • On one side of grill, turn burner to medium-high heat or fire up charcoal and place Smoke ‘Ems packet directly over heat until it starts smoking. • Place wings on other side of grill over medium heat until Smoke ‘Ems has stopped smoking. Note: For more smoke flavor, use a second packet after first has been used. • Increase temperature under wings and continue with Step 4 above.

Beer Cheese Dip Bring your appetizer game to a new level with this delicious recipe for Beer Cheese Dip with Pretzel Ring, from Bear Mountain BBQ ambassador, Jennifer Danella: Ingredients: • 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese grated • ½ cup gruyere cheese grated • 8 ounces cream cheese softened • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • ½ of a 1-ounce Hidden Valley Ranch Packet • 2 tablespoons green onions chopped. • ¼ cup German lager beer • 2 tablespoons baking soda • 1 can biscuits • 1 large egg, mixed with 1 tablespoon water, for brushing biscuits • 12-inch cast iron skillet • Bear Mountain’s Bourbon BBQ or Savory BBQ Craft Blends pellets Preparation: 1. Preheat pellet grill to 350 F. 2. In large bowl, combine 1 cup cheddar, gruyere, cream cheese, Dijon mustard, Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning, beer and 1 tablespoon green onions. Mix evenly. 3. Cut biscuits in half. Roll each half into a ball, then slice an X across top. 4. Boil 2 cups water in medium saucepan. Once boiling, add baking soda and mix immediately. 5. Add biscuits in batches and cook until puffy, approximately 1 minute. Remove and transfer to skillet, forming ring along inside edge. 6. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Sprinkle with salt. 7. Transfer dip to center of skillet. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar. 8. Bake until biscuits are golden and dip is bubbly, 30-35 minutes. 9. Garnish with remaining green onions. Serve! However, certain symptoms could be a sign of a serious condition, warn experts. “A foot and ankle surgeon has the right education and training to provide preventive care and early intervention, which remain essential, even in the age of COVID-19 when you may be avoiding in-person visits,” says Jeffrey D. Loveland, DPM, FACFAS, foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). To help you determine when it’s time to consult a specialist, ACFAS is offering insights into symptoms that affect the foot or ankle and frequently are signs of serious medical conditions: • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): DVT is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in calves or thighs. Potentially very dangerous,

DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism. See a doctor if you experience swelling in the leg, pain in the calf or thigh, or warmth and redness of the leg. • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Commonly referred to as poor circulation, PAD is the restriction of blood flow in the arteries of the leg and could be an indication of more widespread arterial disease that can cause stroke or heart attack. Common symptoms include leg cramping while walking or lying down, leg numbness or weakness, cold legs or feet, sores on the toes, feet or legs that won’t heal, a change in leg color, loss of hair on the feet and legs, and changes in toenail color and thickness. • Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis, a bonethinning disease aﬀecting more than 28 million Americans, accounts for 1.5 million bone fractures annually. One early symptom is increased pain with walking, accompanied by redness and swell-

While both benign, these bumps tend not to go away on their own and can cause discomfort and disruption of everyday activities. Foot bumps can also be cancerous, so it’s always best to have them examined. • Charcot Foot: Charcot foot, a severe diabetes complication, is a sudden softening of the foot’s bones caused by neuropathy. It can trigger an avalanche of problems, including joint loss, fractures, collapse of the arch, massive deformity, ulcers, amputation and even death. Charcot foot cannot be reversed, but its destructive effects can be stopped. Symptoms appear suddenly and can include warm and red skin, swelling and pain. • Ulcers: Not only is a foot ulcer a painful condition which can lead to amputation, it can be indicative of several underlying ailments, which are critical to diagnose and treat, including diabetes, circulatory problems and issues with the mechanics of the foot or leg. Telltale signs that an ulcer may be brewing are swelling, temperature changes in the feet, color changes and calluses.

All I need, really, are a few ideas. Dud’s been working on his novel, “Murder in the Soggy Bottoms,” for several years now, and it has taken on different blends of seasoning, largely depending on what things were happening here in our little valley. For example, the bizarre romantic connection between Dewey and Emily led to a rewrite of the part where the book flashed back many years to when the Duchess and the Truck Driver first met. And when the Truck Driver’s son met the Duchess’s daughter, 20 some years later, it was the courtship of Randy Jones and Katie Burchell that he patterned that after. What is still left to solve, however, is what happens when the Truck Driver and the Duchess discover that their children are sweet on each other, because the kids happen to be half brother and sister. And then, the guys at the coffee shop wanted to know why the Truck Driver, an American truck driver, was there driving below the Duchess’s castle in Europe. At first he was just calling it a special assignment, but the guys wanted to know what the special assignment was, and did he have to change his name for it, and was he armed, and did theme music play when he shifted gears. He’d already killed off a few characters early on in the book, so he believed he was under no obligation to bump off any more, but then the book is called

And as he walked and thought, he asked himself if really good writers like Balzac and Max Evans had to struggle like this. He nodded and smiled to himself. Sometimes I’ll bet they just wanted to sit down, open a beer, and watch football. Hey, not a bad idea. Art does exact its price. F In memory of my mentor, pard and good friend, Max Evans.
