CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS Q&A

California Department of Fish and Wildlife

What Should I Study in College to Become a Wildlife Officer? Becoming a Wildlife Officer Q: I’m starting college in the fall and am ultimately interested in becoming a wildlife officer. What’s the best degree to earn that will help me qualify for the job? A: Thank you for your question! Before you start your education journey and before you apply, it is important to understand we have certain minimum qualifications for education that must be met. You must have a total of 60 semester units of college (no degree required). Within those 60 semester units, you must have 18 semester units in the biological sciences, police science or law enforcement, natural resources conservation, ecology or other “related” fields. This 18-semester unit requirement does not have to be your degree field and the units needed to fulfill this requirement can be taken from your general education or from other accredited college classes you have taken. Students who have 30 semester units of college and have 18 semester units completed (within the 30 units), in the required or related fields, can apply. You must complete the remaining 30 semester units during the hiring process before you are hired.

CDFW has determined that “related fields” include, but are not limited to: animal science, botany, chemistry, conservation, ecology, entomology, environmental management, environmental science, environmental studies, fisheries or wildlife management, forestry, geography, geology, herpetology, life science, mammalogy, marine biology, natural resources, oceanography, ornithology, physics, psychology, plant taxonomy, water quality management, wilderness survival and zoology. So, to answer your original question: If you meet the above requirements, study what you love. Earning a two-year or four-year degree is not mandatory but would potentially make you a more competitive applicant. Our wildlife officers frequently follow the obvious courses of study such as criminal justice, wildlife biology or environmental studies, but we also have an English major wildlife officer who has taught report writing at our Academy for many years and a former chemistry major who worked as a chemist before he became a wildlife officer. Now he specializes in criminal pollution investigations. There are many other examples where a wildlife officer’s educational back-

ground or personal area of expertise is applicable to our work. Those with excellent computer skills have proven to be a valuable resource in investigating internet wildlife trafficking, or poaching crimes that were discovered when a suspect posted their violation or tried to sell the poached wildlife online. We hope you continue to pursue your educational and career goals of wildlife law enforcement and someday bring your unique talents to our Law Enforcement Division. If you are interested in becoming a wildlife officer, you must turn in your application prior to July 31, 2021, in order to be considered for the next hiring cycle. Please contact our LED recruiter, Lt. Perry Schultz, at becomeagamewarden@wildlife.ca.gov for further information.

Sea Urchins Q: Can I go tide-pooling for sea urchins in the San Francisco Bay Area? A: Yes, in general, you can collect sea urchins in San Francisco Bay from shore with a fishing license and a take limit of no more than 35 urchins for each species. The take of invertebrates in ocean waters is covered in California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 29.05.

California Outdoors Q&A ← CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

Section 29.05(a) prohibits the take of invertebrates at night, except from the shore, in San Francisco and San Pablo bays and saltwater tributaries east of the Golden Gate Bridge. There are different regulations that apply to certain areas outside San Francisco Bay that can be found in Section 29.06. There are also areas up and down the state, known as Marine Protected Areas, which are offlimits to the harvesting of any marine life (see section 29.05(b)). Information on Marine Protected Areas in the San Francisco Bay Area can be found on CDFW’s website.

Selling Tuna on a Chartered Fishing Field Trip Q: Can I sell yellowfin tuna to a friend while on an ocean fishing trip? A: No. California Fish and Game Code (FGC) section 7121 states that it is unlawful to sell or purchase any fish or amphibia taken under the authority of a sport fishing license. This would include any fish or amphibia taken in, or brought into, the waters of the state, or brought ashore. Also note that the definition of “sell” in this context, per FGC section 75, would include offers to sell, barter, exchange or trade. You can donate your tuna to your friend as long as

there’s no expectation or agreement to receive something of value in return. On a trip like this, sharing a fresh caught tuna for a meal amongst fellow anglers while out at sea is not only legal but a great way to build camaraderie while on your trip. However, it would be unlawful to sell or trade tuna to your friend or anyone else. ✦ If you have a question you would like to see answered in the California Outdoors Q and A column, email it to CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov.

TRAVEL

How the ‘Dream Vacation’ Has Changed for Americans © vvvita / iStock via Getty Images Plus

(StatePoint) The pandemic has changed the way we work, learn and socialize, so it’s no surprise that it’s also changed the way we think about travel. One thing is certain, as the vaccine rollout continues, globetrotters worldwide are eager to return to their regularly scheduled travel. A new survey from global accommodations search platform trivago reveals not only a widespread desire to travel, but changes in the kind of trips we wish to take. Whereas 62% of Americans would travel for pleasure and fun prepandemic, future trips will likely have an increased emphasis on wellness and seeing family and friends -- they’ll also be closer to home. Indeed, the very concept of the “dream vacation” has changed, with the typical idea of a big trip or vacation planned ahead and saved for on hiatus. With certain travel restrictions making it difficult to plan in advance and the separation caused by lockdowns, today, the number one choice for a “dream vacation” among survey respondents was a chance to spend “time with the family and friends I’ve missed.” The survey also revealed that travel as a form of self-care and wellness is a concept that is continuing to grow.

Americans largely view travel as part of a well-rounded life. But is travel a good idea right now? Experts say that while you’re dreaming of that special trip, you don’t have to stay put. With proper planning and precautions, local getaways and weekend road trips can be enjoyed safely. Travelers agree – 55% of Americans plan to travel domestically, compared to under onethird who have international travel plans. Here are a few ideas to get you excited about travel right now: • See every state: Check all 48 contiguous U.S. states off your road trip bucket list. • Explore National Parks: From the spectacular red rock formations of the Southwest to the breathtaking sunrises of the Shenandoah, America is beautiful. Explore the country’s wild side via its National Park system. A U.S. Park Pass makes it easy and affordable to visit over 2,000 federal recreation sites nationwide. • Go “glamping”: Outdoor adventures are popular right now for a reason, giving you a way to get away while

still socially distancing. But if you’re not much of a camper, “glamping” can be a terrific alternative. A portmanteau of glamour and camping, glamping is exactly what it implies. Accommodations vary from yurts to treehouses to safari tents and tend to offer all the amenities of a hotel. • Combine your passions: A majority of respondents picked up a new hobby since the start of the pandemic. From cooking to photography to cycling and running, of those who’ve enriched their lives with new activities this past year, the vast majority think it’s at least somewhat likely they’ll pick a vacation connected to the new pastime once the pandemic ends. Take a safe, local trip inspired by your new hobby. • Know before you go: Do your research before heading out. Check out trivago, which offers tools for booking local trips, as well as travel tips and inspiration. Visit trivago.com. So much has changed in the last year, including the way we think about travel and plan our getaways. One thing is certain, for many Americans, travel remains a priority. F

5 Hobbies to Keep Your Body and Mind Healthy and Happy (StatePoint) As the pandemic continues to restrict many of the places you are able or inclined to go, finding ways to stay active is important for keeping the body and mind healthy and happy. Here are some ideas for new hobbies to try. • Learn a language: Bonjour! ¡Hola! With an array of online language classes and tutorials available at your fingertips, learning a new language is more accessible than ever. Start now while you fantasize about a post-pandemic vacation overseas. • Play an instrument: Learning to play an instrument is not only a great distraction for the current moment, it can provide you with years of joy as your skill develops. Consider starting your musical journey on a Casiotone keyboard. By connecting the keyboard to

the free Chordana Play app, you can easily learn to play your favorite songs from downloaded MIDI files. Once you’ve mastered the instrument, the portability of the keyboard will come in handy, whether you play solo or join a band. • Become a home chef: From sushi to soufflé to dumplings, there are likely a range of dishes you have never attempted making at home. Tackle your culinary bucket list, one-by-one. • Go hiking: There is no better hobby for staying fit and communing with nature than hiking, which works every muscle of the body, boosts cardiovascular health and even improves mood and mental well-being. Track your hike using a wearable tech tool geared for outdoor enthusiasts, such as a watch from the Casio’s Pro Trek line. Quad Sensor

technology packs all the measurements you need into one compact hiking watch, including a compass, altitude/barometer and temperature measurements, along with an accelerometer that tracks step count. Calorie calculations use both step count and altitude information to take upgrades and downgrades into consideration, and data is recorded by the Pro Trek connected app. • Volunteer: At a time when many people are struggling, consider volunteering your time to serve those in need. There are plenty of safe, socially distant volunteer opportunities, from delivering meals to the homebound, to video conferencing with socially isolated seniors to helping boost adult literacy via remote tutoring. Amid the ongoing pandemic, staying busy and positive may take creativity. However, discovering new hobbies and pursuits you love can nurture the body, mind and soul.F

(statepoint) Americans are living longer than ever before, and with continually rising health care costs, the need for a long-term care solution becomes more of a “when” than an “if” situation, according to financial experts, who warn that Americans are largely waiting too long to plan and prepare. “Many people wait until they’re in their 50s or 60s before beginning longterm care planning, but with costs rising, it’s important to start planning when you’re younger and healthy,” says Heather Deichler, senior vice president, MoneyGuard product management, Lincoln Financial. To get prepped, consider these tips from Lincoln Financial: • Plan early: Only about 7.5 million

people in the U.S. have policies that pay long-term care benefits, according to the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, but more than half of Americans turning 65 are projected to need some type of long-term care in the future. This disparity could be due to the fact that many underestimate long-term care costs and expect to rely on savings or Medicare and Medicaid to cover them. Those in the know — financial planners — see medical/healthcare costs and long-term care expenses as bigger risks to retirees’ savings than spending too much, inflation or the economy. Indeed, a majority of consumers in a recent survey conducted by Versta Research on behalf of Lincoln Financial guess that a private room in a nursing home costs less than

half the realistic estimate. Others may simply feel their good health exempts them from the need to plan at all. But living a healthy lifestyle could mean you’ll live longer and face health-related risks associated with aging. Being realistic about the possibility your future could involve long-term care and the true costs associated with it can help you plan accordingly and motivate you to get started early. • Get on the same page as your family: Having a long-term care conversation with loved ones can help you feel confident about your future and help avoid conflict among family members. care. This is a good time to identify who will be responsible for your financial and medical affairs should you become unable to manage them. • Consult a financial professional: A financial professional can help you get a handle on your financial future and make you aware of all your options, including those that evolve with your needs. They may point you to solutions that can help cover qualified long-term care expenses. Some solutions can offer more options and flexibility with a guaranteed level of protection and the possibility for investment growth. For example, in addition to obtaining care in an assisted living facility or nursing home, you could have the flexibility to receive care at home, including from family members. Comprehensive long-term care planning with family members and a financial professional now can help ensure everyone is prepared for the emotional and financial decisions that may need to be made in the years ahead. ✦

COMMUNITY

Top Ways to Volunteer Safely at Home or in Person PHOTO SOURCE: © Mediteraneo / Adobe Stock

(StatePoint) Volunteers have the power to tackle society’s greatest challenges. Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to accelerating people-powered change, is activating volunteers to support the most vulnerable populations. And over the past year, volunteers have joined the ranks of frontline workers and first responders to fight against COVID-19, support the vaccination roll-out, address systemic racism and ensure equity and opportunity for all. “During a time of great uncertainty, our purpose of finding ways to unite communities and connect people despite distance is more important than ever,” says Natalye Paquin, president and CEO of Points of Light. A recent survey demonstrates that despite all the obstacles, 2020 marked one of the most civically-engaged years in history. Fifty-two percent of Americans surveyed volunteered for the first time during the pandemic. However, seven out of 10 respondents reported that while the effects of COVID-19 on their community made

16

them more eager to volunteer, they’ve hesitated due to safety concerns. To volunteer safely, consider these ideas and tips from Points of Light: 1. Offer vaccination assistance. Scheduling vaccinations can be tricky, particularly for those who aren’t websavvy or don’t speak English as a first language. Whether you work with individuals in your extended network or volunteer with organizations helping to centralize vaccination information, there are many ways to be involved from home. On-site opportunities to help people navigate their vaccination appointment also exist, and your assistance may be especially needed if you’re multilingual. Vaccination distribution centers follow all CDC social distancing guidelines to ensure the health and safety of volunteers. 2. Give rides to medical appointments. Seniors without transportation often need rides to life-sustaining medical appointments. With the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine, this need has increased. Connect with a local organiza-

tion near you that follows protocols to keep drivers and the elderly safe. 3. Support food distribution. The concurrent medical and economic crises have made grocery shopping dangerous for some, and unaffordable for others. Drive-through food distribution centers and contactless drop-off services are essential social protection programs you can support. As more people get vaccinated, an increasing number of in-person volunteer opportunities will likely open up and be needed in food banks. 4. Comfort the grieving. Those who are grieving often need critical emotional support. While some organizations are searching for licensed counselors to make comfort calls, others are looking for anyone with a big heart and a listening ear. 5. Maintain public spaces. Communities are looking for volunteers to beautify and improve the local environment of public parks and spaces.

6. Help students succeed. Even in normal years, many families need assistance with school supplies and homework help, and the pandemic has only exacerbated these issues. Help students succeed by providing virtual tutoring through a homework helpline or by contributing to or hosting a donation drive for school supplies. 7. Support health initiatives. After facing long periods of isolation, there is a growing demand to help build strong communities by supporting local fitness and nutrition programs. Virtual and inperson opportunities abound for people of all professional backgrounds and skillsets, ranging from coaching youth runners to widening access to nutrition information in low-income neighborhoods. 8. Show gratitude. Recognize and thank first responders, volunteers and frontline workers. Many say that handwritten letters are the most cherished items received in care packages. This is also a great way to get kids involved! 9. Make connections. During the pandemic, homebound people have been more isolated than ever. Organizations are looking for volunteers to make regular phone calls to provide companionship and determine if individuals are in need of additional assistance. 10. Just volunteer! Visit Points of Light at pointsoflight.org/volunteer to find a local affiliate in your area, search the world’s largest digital hub for volunteering and community engagement opportunities, as well as to find tips and best practices for safely volunteering from home or in communities. And be sure to inspire others to uplift their communities by sharing your experiences using #PointsofLight on social media. F

GARDENING

Expand Your Planting Space by Melinda Myers

When your plant list is longer than the available gardening space it is time to expand your planting options. Create new gardening space by adding raised bed gardens, elevated planters, and containers wherever space allows. Convert the end of the drive or edge of the patio into raised bed gardens. Just use a raised bed liner to contain the soil. Raising the garden makes planting, maintaining and harvesting easier on the back and knees. It also allows you to create the perfect soil foundation by filling your raised bed with a quality planting mix. Long lasting cedar is a traditional choice for raised beds. Now you can also find them made of a wood and plastic composite or metal and in a variety of shapes and sizes. Finding one to complement your gardening style and space is much easier these days. Reduce time spent watering with a self-watering metal raised bed (gardeners.com) or similar product. Selfwatering raised beds have built-in water reservoirs to extend the time between watering. Or use a raised bed drip or soaker hose irrigation system to easily apply water right to the soil where it is needed. Elevated gardens are just containers on legs. They are perfect for patios, balconies and other hard surfaces. Use them to define space, create privacy and of course grow ornamental and edible plants. Those on wheels can easily be moved out of the way when guests arrive. Or wheel them into the gathering, so everyone can harvest and dress up their meals with gardenfresh herbs and veggies. Just pull up a chair and start planting or weeding your elevated garden. Grow vines in those with built-in trel-

18

lises and extend the season by protecting plantings with frost and insect covers. Select elevated planters with a shelf below to conveniently store gardening tools and accessories. Even small space gardeners can

expand their planting space with the help of containers. You’ll find plenty of attractive options to fit your front steps, patio, balcony or deck. Railing planters and window boxes don’t take up floor space yet dress

up any outdoor area. Grow herbs in planters located near the kitchen and flowers wherever additional color is needed. Add a few pollinator-friendly plants to attract butterflies and hummingbirds to watch and enjoy. Extend your time outdoors with outdoor lighting. Or look for multifunctional options like solar illuminated planters. Powered by the sun and with a flip of a switch, you can choose a single or multi-changing light color display. Don’t let the thought of frequent watering stop you from growing in containers and elevated gardens. Selfwatering options are available in a variety of shapes and sizes including the classic, yet curvy self-watering Valencia window box. Once you select your raised bed, elevated garden, or container, you will need to fill it with a planting or potting mix. Figure out exactly how much is needed with a soil calculator. Just plug the size and shape into the form. It tells you how many cubic yards or cubic feet of soil are needed for raised beds and the number of quarts for containers and elevated gardens. Expanding the garden doesn’t have to mean a lot more work. Selecting the right option that provides convenience and ease of care can help you grow more flowers and garden-fresh produce this season.

LIVING

Giving Gifts With Meaning on Special Occasions (StatePoint) In today’s world, intimacy can sometimes be sacrificed for immediacy. We often send texts or emails, rather than hand writing letters, cards or notes. However, handwritten notes are a beautiful way to capture meaningful moments and create something tangible that goes beyond the digital. In the past, writing by hand was an integral part of daily life — letters were written to soldiers overseas, travel journals and diaries were kept, and cards were sent to celebrate birthdays. Today, we have to be much more intentional about crafting these handmade mementos. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, graduation or other special occasion, get inspired by the art of handwritten communication and celebrate with one of these lasting keepsakes: • Tap into Nostalgia: Take your gift recipient for a sweet trip down memory lane by compiling a scrapbook or memory

box of photographs, keepsakes and more. Make sure to include a handwritten note from the present day for a heartfelt finishing touch. • Feed the Soul: Preparing food and sharing meals is one of the most common ways for friends and families to connect. If your celebrant has a collection of handwritten recipe cards, consider binding them into a cookbook, complete with a title page inscription from you. Not only will it make them feel like an accomplished chef, it’ll preserve these treasured treats forever. • Capture the Everyday: The first step to preserving treasured memories is to record them. Gift some stunning stationery, a sturdy leather-bound journal or even high-quality card stock and encourage your recipient to do some writing of their own. Journaling is proven to be an effective tool for relaxation and self-reflection, and a lovely journal might be a welcome invitation to for some self-care. Pair your gift with a smooth-writing, long-lasting gel ink pen, like the G2 from Pilot, to ensure their words flow effortlessly.

StatePoint.net

• Give the Ultimate Upgrade: Complete the gift and make sure your loved one is ready for any writing task with a Decimo fountain pen. The slimmer barreled cousin to Pilot’s classic Vanishing Point fountain pen features a unique, retractable design and a rhodium plated 18K gold writing nib that is as durable as it is sophisticated. However you celebrate, be sure to skip the e-card and handwrite something from the heart, instead. Dud Campbell was at the kitchen table, contemplating what to do next on his novel, “Murder in the Soggy Bottoms.” It’s been a constant concern to him for several years now, since the idea struck him. terious enough. And Doc thought Soggy Bottoms sounded like a diaper change was called for. But maybe he could conjure up something from his own past that at least might give him an idea of what to write next. So he took the lid off his castiron Dutch oven and walked into the back yard. He built a fire in his barbecue and tended it until it was down to coals, and then turned the lid over and put it on the coals. He smeared a little oil on the lid and poured pancake batter on it. After eating too many pancakes even before Anita woke up, he walked back in the house and began writing. How on earth, he asked himself, does anyone anywhere write more than one book in a lifetime?
