CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS Q&A
Brush rabbit on a trail in Northern California. Shutterstock
Is A Vaccine Available For Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease? Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Q: Is a vaccine available for Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease virus type 2 (RHDV2), which was confirmed in 2020 in wild rabbit populations in California? A: Yes, although there are no commercially available RHDV2 vaccines in the United States. Under authorization of the state veterinarian at the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), vaccines produced in Europe may be imported into California for use in domestic rabbits by licensed veterinarians. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are using imported vaccines to protect California’s most endangered rabbit, the riparian brush rabbit, against RHDV2. Information on RHDV2 in domestic rabbits can be found on CDFA’s website. To learn more about vaccinating domestic rabbits against RHDV2 contact your veterinarian. Riparian brush rabbits are found in small patches of remaining riparian forest habitat in the northern portion of the Central Valley and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Because vaccinations require trapping and administering injec-
tions to each individual rabbit, it is not feasible to deploy vaccinations for wild rabbit populations except in cases where populations are small and endangered. CDFW has received reports that live rabbits are still observed in areas where we have confirmed the virus is present, giving us hope that some rabbits are surviving infection. RHDV2 was first observed in wild rabbits in the southwestern U.S. in March 2020 and has rapidly spread to many states. In California, cases of the virus in wild rabbits have been detected in Alameda, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Cases in domestic rabbits have also been confirmed in Ventura and San Louis Obispo counties. RHDV2 is not related to the novel coronavirus and does not affect humans or domestic animals other than rabbits. You and others can help by keeping your eyes open and reporting any sick or dead wild rabbits as our wildlife veterinarians monitor the situation. We’re asking anyone who lives, works or recreates in wild rabbit habitat to report sightings of sick or dead rabbits to CDFW’s Wildlife Health Laboratory at
(916) 358-2790, or file an online mortality report through CDFW’s website. CDFW’s RHDV2 webpage includes fact sheets and information about the virus, how to report sightings of dead rabbits, ways to prevent human-caused spread of the disease, and a link to the U.S. Department of Agriculture interactive map showing counties where the disease has been confirmed in domestic, feral and/or wild rabbits.
Avian Illness Q: I’ve been reading articles about the mystery illness affecting birds in the Eastern U.S. We have been seeing birds with the same symptoms around our home in Southern California for months. Crusty eyes, twitchy head movements, disorientation or they do not fly off when approached. Have there been any reported bird deaths in California that could be attributed to the mystery illness? A: While the cause of the illness affecting birds in the eastern U.S. is still being investigated, CDFW’s Wildlife Health Laboratory is closely monitoring two diseases that are known to cause

eye disease in wild birds in California. These include avian mycoplasmosis, a bacterial infection, and avian pox, which is a viral infection. Both are transmitted through contact with an infected bird or contaminated surfaces like bird feeders. Avian pox may also be transmitted through a mosquito bite. Avian mycoplasmosis primarily affects house finches and goldfinches and causes swollen, crusty eyes, labored breathing and generalized weakness. A related infection has also been identified in crows. Avian pox causes wart-like growths on the skin often around the eyes and bill. Both infections spread readily at bird feeders and bird baths. If sick birds are seen at feeders, it is recommended the feeders be removed until the outbreak subsides. Thorough, weekly cleaning of bird feeders and bird baths may help reduce transmission. An even better option would be to plant a bird and pol-
linator friendly garden. Residents can help CDFW monitor for wildlife illness and deaths by submitting a report using CDFW’s online mortality reporting form. Disposable gloves should be worn, and hands should be thoroughly washed after handling of bird feeders and bird baths and when disposing of dead birds.
Endangered Species Q: I think I saw a threatened or endangered animal! What should I do? A: Congratulations! Witnessing California’s rare and protected species is a special treat. As you observe wildlife, especially sensitive wildlife, please be sure to maintain an appropriate distance from the animal so as not to disturb its normal behavior and keep noise to a minimum. Do not attempt to capture or lure the animal to you. Not only is this illegal for most protected species, but it can also harm individu-
als by interrupting normal behaviors and activities, such as breeding or foraging. Observations of protected species may be submitted to the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) which tracks all of California’s sensitive plants and animals. One option is to use the Online Field Survey Form to enter your observation, including details such as location and date of observation, descriptions of habitat and behaviors seen, and to upload any photos you took. First time users will need to set up an account, but this is free of charge. Once you have an account you can continue to input additional observations, access past observations and generate reports of your submissions. F If you have a question you would like to see answered in the California Outdoors Q and A column, email it to CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov

Top Tips for Homeowners to Prep Financially for Natural Disasters (StatePoint) Climate change is making natural disasters more extreme, from extending the duration of disaster seasons to increasing the intensity of fires, storms and floods. Indeed, the U.S. Geological Survey notes that with increasing global surface temperatures, the intensity of storms will likely increase. The agency also predicts coastal flooding to double in the coming decades. Health and safety are first priorities after a disaster, but financial resilience is critical too. If you’re a homeowner -- or a prospective homeowner -- here’s how you can get prepared: • Compile documents: Assemble important financial documents. Store paper copies of all files in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe, or in a bank safe deposit box. Consider making digital copies for easy accessibility. Store these in a password-protected format on a removable flash or external hard drive, in your fireproof and waterproof box or safe, in a bank safe deposit box, or with a secure cloud-based service.

Plus, households that have an emergency savings account tend to fare better overall. • Go electronic: If you depend on regular benefits such as Social Security, consider switching to electronic benefits to protect yourself should mail service be disrupted during a disaster. • Know the plans: Stay up-to-date with the emergency plans in your community, children’s schools and place of work. Make a communications plan for your own household and share it with all the members of your family. • Seek disaster relief: If your home has been impacted by a natural disaster, contact your loan servicer right away. Your loan servicer may be able to extend a full range of relief options, including: suspending foreclosures by providing forbearance on your mortgage payments for up to 12 months, waiving assessments of penalties or late fees, and not reporting delinquencies to the nation’s credit bureaus. About one month before the end of your forbearance period, contact your mortgage company to determine the most appropriate option for re-establishing your mortgage payments. • Become a savvy homeowner: Familiarize yourself with how to prepare your home for natural disasters and extreme weather, as well as where to find resources to help recover if disaster strikes. Freddie Mac’s My Home website has a comprehensive suite of tools and resources about homeownership, including details on support options if you are struggling to make your mortgage payments, at myhome.freddiemac.com/ getting-help. Natural disasters can strike at any time and with little warning. However, proper preparation can help you weather the storm. ✦

What to Know When Shopping in Stores This Back-to-School Season (StatePoint) Is your family returning to brick-and-mortar stores to prepare for the return of brick-and-mortar school? A new survey offers insights into what you can expect and how you can prepare for the experience. The survey, conducted in June by Sensormatic Solutions, finds consumer confidence reaching new highs, with 73% of back-to-school shoppers say-
ing they were neutral or unconcerned about shopping in-store currently. This is a major leap from previous pandemicera surveys. In spring 2021, only 50% of shoppers were neutral or unconcerned about shopping in-stores, and only 35% of shoppers felt that way in winter 2020. “The survey highlights a likely return to many pre-pandemic back-to-school shopping habits,” says Kim Melvin,

global leader of marketing, Sensormatic Solutions, a leading retail solutions provider. “Families now have an increased confidence about shopping in stores and they are going to be shopping earlier and spending more on apparel and school supplies.” As part of its mission to solve complex retail challenges related to consumer confidence, health and safety, Sensormatic Solutions is providing its top three strategies to improve your back-to-school shopping experience. 1. During the pandemic, retailers large and small implemented and perfected an array of shopping options in an effort to keep customers and staff healthy and safe. The good news? These options are not going away. While instore shopping is the most popular way people plan to stock up on school essentials this year, according to survey results, options like buy online, pickup in stores (BOPIS), curbside pickup and online shopping allow you to leisurely comparison shop from the comfort of home. And, thanks to innovations in inventory tracking software, these options have become a highly reliable way to get what you need when you want it. 2. With the high demand in apparel and school supplies – 70% and 53%, respectively, say they plan to spend the most on those categories this year – it may be a good idea to get a head start on preparing your children for in-person learning. Consider going to stores earlier than you may have in the past to beat the rush and get the products you and your children need. 3. Find out whether your state offers a tax-free shopping period. Timing your shopping to occur during this period can help you save substantially at checkout, especially if you’re among the 12% of consumers planning to spend more this year compared to last. For more back-to-school shopping insights and tips, visit sensormatic.com. “Overall, you can expect this shopping season to look more like 2019 than 2020, a welcome change for both consumers and retailers,” says Melvin. ✦

How to Quit Smoking on Your Terms (StatePoint) When you quit smoking you can lower your risk for a number of serious health problems, including lung disease, lung cancer and heart disease. But kicking the habit isn’t easy, especially if you’ve smoked for a long time. The good news is that despite the many physical challenges associated with quitting, millions of Americans successfully do so each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to one successful quitter, Michelle Le, the blogger behind Diet & Fries, there are key steps you can take to help you stop smoking: • Write it down: Start a journal. Include highlights of the day, your selfmaintenance strategies and what you’ve learned from today’s experience.
• Take a breath: Do breathing exercises if you’re having a stressful day to help calm your mind. Just a few minutes is all you need, so check out short free online videos for guidance. • Talk to friends. Having a support system is key to breaking a habit. Find someone you trust to share with. • Distract yourself: Get involved in fun activities like working out, kickball and softball to make new friends and live a healthier lifestyle. • Seek out expert help. The team at Walgreens can help you build a personalized plan to quit on your terms. Their resources include tips and advice, a pharmacy chat feature available 24/7, as well as tools to discover the true impact of smoking on your health and wallet based on your usage. What’s more, Walgreens carries a variety of smoking

cessation products that deliver controlled, therapeutic doses of nicotine to help with difficult physical symptoms and relieve cravings. Each gum lasts 30 minutes and you can chew up to 20 pieces a day. This is a great way to keep your mouth busy. There are also lozenges available if you don’t like gum. • Take a walk. Take a 20-minute walk during your breaks, especially when you get hit with cravings. This could be a good time to have some Walgreens smoking cessation gum. Karen Martinez, the creator behind the blog Mamma Bear Says, encouraged
her father to quit smoking when she was a little girl. At the time, she had little knowledge to offer her dad through his quitting journey. Now that she’s an adult, she understands how difficult this process was and is actively raising awareness about different resources that can help smokers quit successfully. As Martinez points out, you can use your health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) to making quitting more affordable. “It’s important to know that you can use your HSA or FSA to pay for smoking cessation products. These pre-
tax accounts are to be used to pay for healthcare-related expenses, but if you don’t use it, you lose it. Every year millions of dollars in health savings funds are forfeited by Americans because of the uncertainty of what is covered.” To access Walgreen’s library of resources and learn more about their smoking cessation products, visit walgreens.com. Quitting smoking isn’t easy, but the support of loved ones, experts and smoking aids can make it a little less challenging, helping you enjoy the health benefits of a smoke-free life. F

Pass the Herbs Please by Melinda Myers Boost the flavor and health value of your meals without adding more salt. A trip through the spice aisle at the grocery store and a close look at the labels reveals the secret to salt substitutes – herbs. Growing your own, not only saves money, it ensures the freshest flavor and highest nutritional value. Plus, you’ll enjoy the convenience of picking them fresh from the garden or container on your patio, deck or balcony. Oregano, basil, and garlic have long been used to boost the flavor of Italian and other familiar recipes, reducing the need for salt. Try these and other herbs in your favorite dishes. And don’t overlook citrus. Dried and powdered lemon peel adds flavor and minimizes the need for salt. You’ll find it as a main ingredient in several salt substitute mixes. Cooks in the Mediterranean and

Laboratory studies found the red berries had antioxidant, antifungal, and antimicrobial benefits that may prove beneficial to our health. Herbs are easy to grow in the garden or a pot. Mix herbs with flowers in your garden and landscape. Their fragrance and texture make them an ornamental as well as edible addition to the landscape. Make incorporating fresh herbs convenient by growing them in containers right next to your kitchen door. Grow a pot of your favorite grilling herbs and set it next to the grill. Use small containers of herbs as a centerpiece. Add a pair of garden clippers and allow your family and friends to clip and season their meals.
Herbs, in general, prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Most are drought tolerant once established though basil performs best when the soil is kept slightly moist. Harvest leaves and stems as needed throughout the growing season. Just be sure to leave enough foliage to maintain plant growth. Fortunately, you can remove up to 75% of foliage from an established plant. Clip off leaves and stems before the plant begins flowering to encourage more growth. You’ll get the greatest concentration of flavor when the plant has formed buds, but before they open. This is the perfect time to harvest herbs you plan to preserve. Don’t worry if you harvest more than you need. Preserve their flavor with proper storage. Store thin, leafy herbs like parsley and cilantro in a jar of wa-

Wrap thicker leafed herbs like sage and thyme in a paper towel set inside a plastic bag and place in a warmer section of the fridge. This season be sure to carve out a bit of space in the garden or add a container or two for growing your own fresh herbs to enjoy. ✦ Melinda Myers has written more than 20 gardening books, including The Midwest Gardener’s Handbook and Small Space Gardening. there is in the splashing of the creek a great spray of diamonds. As each youngster sails like an astronaut out on the tire swing, then releases the hold on the earth to flail, suspended in time and space for that brief second or two, there is a timelessness, a postponement of all things evil and destructive, an affirmation of joy. The swimming hole in Lewis Creek has been there since Indian times, of course, and the tire swing was probably preceded by simply a rope with knots in it. It is one of the summer lodestones of our existence. Each summer we have to make our pilgrimage in the hot sun to the hole below the little waterfall, to the place where Lewis Creek widens and deepens for the benefit of hot, dry people before becoming just a creek again. And in this widening of the creek, this sacred place in our summer lives, we also play witness to the passage of years. Across the creek from the tree with the tire swing, the gravelly bottom extends gently with almost no current for ten feet or so. This is the baby beach, where squealing tots are allowed to cool off without benefit (or hindrance) of any more covering than the smiles of their parents. As the children grow, they venture farther out into the current of the
creek and test their strength against the forces of nature. By the time a youngster is eight or ten, the seduction of the tire swing becomes overwhelming and the flailing of the arms and legs against the blue of the sky begin. Later still, when gangliness becomes fluidity and sleekness, and we want to make catlike moves to attract the opposite sex, the tire is used as a swinging platform for exquisite dives into the deep part of the creek where the big trout lie in cold holes. And as we age, and we watch our children come to love the hole in Lewis Creek, and as we sip lemonade in the shade as our grandchildren work their ways up the swimming hole chain of life, we can look at the splashing of the creek and see, with each sleek dive, with each laughing bellyflop, the diamonds of the creek sent skyward, and the laughter stays with us and keeps us strong and makes us feel rich, and fortunate. It is unnecessary to say the hole in Lewis Creek is an important part of our lives, because it, along with so many other treasures of the years, really is our lives. ✦ Brought to you by Sweetgrass Mornings, by Slim Randles.
