the honda cr-v has become the most popular crossover vehicle in the U.S. and now for the first time is available in Hybrid form. Though it has been available in Europe and Asia for more than a year, the 2020 CR-V Hybrid is the first of Honda’s electrified crossovers here in the States. The CR-V hybrid is available in four trim levels, LX, EX, EX-L and Touring. Like other Honda models, each step in trim level adds more equipment and features. It seems the EX, with a starting price of $31,380, might be the most popular as it has most features buyers are looking for in their ride. Step up to the EX-L, at $33,870, if you want leather seating surfaces and power lift gate. All models get as standard equipment Honda Sensing suite of active driver aids which includes lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, collision-warning and autonomous braking with pedestrian detection.
Power incorporates a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine along with the two electric motor system found on the Accord Hybrid and a 1.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This combination offers up quick acceleration and long range. The 2020 CR-V Hybrid has a combined 212 horsepower rating, with 232 lb.-ft. of torque. The CR-V is the first of Honda’s AWD to offer a hybrid system and utilizes Honda’s system that sends torque to the rear wheels when the system detects loss of traction to the front wheels. From the exterior, the 2020 CR-V differs from other models by having a unique front and rear bumper design. The front also receives different LED fog lamps. Of course, the Hybrid is outfitted with hybrid badges all around the vehicle. We found the manual shifting action to be quite unique as well, in that it feels as though the electric powered motors

come into play as the driver shifts up and down through the “gears.” We were just glad Honda engineers gave us a manual mode; at least we can pretend we are in control of gear selection. The technical explanation of this down-shift is in the electric regeneration system which charges the battery as you slow down or apply the brakes. The regeneration increases (charging the batteries) as you use the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters to shift down. You experience the sensation of a downshift. There is an EV-only mode, however the range is significantly lowered. Even though the Hybrid system and batteries increase the overall weight 200 pounds, the 2020 Honda CR-V handles quite well. The suspension system is engineered to handle the increase while giving the CR-V handling characteristics that controlled the twisting Northern California coastal mountain roads. On the highway, the suspension handled the less than stellar California road surfaces, smoothing out the imperfections and providing a comfortable ride. The Honda CR-V Hybrid uses an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Though the CVT-ness is becoming less of an issue for us, we continue wish the motorboat feeling under hard acceleration would be solved.
Honda engineers are getting closer to solving this conundrum. The 2020 Honda CR-V may not be king of the hill in the fuel economy for its class, and unless you are a hyper-miler, who cares? With the responsiveness coupled with 40 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, the CR-V is a winner. After all those other CUVs in this class rack up just a mile or 3 more. We will take the tradeoff. The Honda CR-V Hybrid has four driver-selectable modes: Normal, Sport, Econ and EV. Sport adapts throttle response for quicker response and even changes the vehicle’s sound to be more aggressive. During our drive you could feel this hybrid SUV was a bit livelier. Econ mode eases the powertrain response to enhance economy. As the EV mode insinuates, the CR-V Hybrid switches to electric only mode that works at lower speeds. The system monitors speed and if the vehicle speed goes too high or there’s not enough battery reserve the system toggles back to normal operation. As each driving day ended, we gained a new respect for the Honda CR-V Hybrid. We are not sure we would opt for a hybrid system over a traditional just yet. However, it will continue to be an interesting ride, nonetheless. ✦ Copyright © 2020 autoreviewsplus.com

Klamath Seeing a Solid Return of Kings

By Kenny Priest since just after Labor Day weekend, the Klamath River has been king salmon central. The river’s been plugged with jacks (2-year old males), along with some hefty adults. The run started a little late this year, likely due to unusually high water temperatures. Smoke-filled skies, shielding the water from the bright sun, finally began cooling the water just enough and the salmon came pouring in. For the last three weeks, the fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. This number of fish in the river is good news, especially considering how dire the numbers of adult salmon predicted to return the last few years were. Following a complete salmon fishing closure in 2017, the Klamath and Trinity rivers have been teetering between collapse and rebuilding. In 2018, CDFW predicted 59,733 would return but only 31,838 adult fall-run salmon made it back. In
2019, a return of approximately 87,000 was predicted. Those predictions never materialized, and only 37,270 fall-run kings returned. The CDFW forecasted a modest 48,274 natural area spawning salmon would return this fall. In an average year, the Klamath basin would see close to 122,000 adult kings return. So while it’s easy to speculate this year’s returns will be above forecasted numbers due to increased harvest rates, it’s way too early to celebrate. We won’t know the size of the run until sometime early next year but it sure feels good to see the river full of fish again. And the CDFW creel surveys are providing some solid proof. For the week ending Sept. 23, 1,162 jacks were harvested and another 656 were released. During the same week, 1,319 adult kings (larger than 23 inches) were released. CDFW, Commission proposing changes to Sport crabbing The Fish and Game Commission and the Department of Fish and Wildlife are proposing regulatory changes to begin addressing entanglement risks posed by the recreational rock and Dungeness crab fishery in California for species listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. Between 2014 and 2019, three humpback whale entanglements were attributed to the recreational crab fishery in California. The fishing gear responsible for entanglement could not be identified in 44 percent of all confirmed entanglements between 1982 and 2017, and the recreational crab fishery may be responsible in some of these instances. Proposed changes: 1) Require all recreational crab traps be marked with a main buoy that is at least 5 inches in diameter and 11 inches in length, and that a red marker buoy that is 3 inches in diameter and 5 inches in length be attached no more than 3 feet from the main buoy. 2) Establish a maximum service interval of nine days, weather conditions at sea permitting, and would prohibit abandoned traps. 3) Establish an individual trap limit of 10 traps. The current 60-trap limit for commercial passenger fishing vessels targeting Dungeness crab will apply to those targeting any crab. The proposed regulation would allow an individual to service up to 10 additional traps if they possess written permission from the operator(s) of the additional traps. 4) Provide authority for the director

(statepoint) Along with the fall season comes a range of outdoor chores for homeowners nationwide, from clearing trees and branches after wicked weather strikes to gathering autumn leaves. Here are a few things to consider as you go about fueling your chainsaws, leaf blowers and other lawn care equipment: proper fuel storage If you have messy or bulky fuel containers, it’s time for an update. Proper fuel storage can make the task of fueling equipment safer, cleaner and ultimately more efficient and affordable. For starters, be sure to purchase only fuel containers approved by federal or state authorities that have a flame mitigation device (FMD) and a child safety feature. Then, consider ease of use. The best containers not only exceed recognized safety standards, they help you avoid messy, costly spills. To that end, look for a user-controlled flow valve, such as those featured on Scepter SmartControl containers. Available in 1-, 2- and 5-gallon sizes for gasoline, diesel and kerosene, these rugged storage containers which are made of five layers of safe high-density polyethylene for long-
time use, feature an innovative, hasslefree spout controlled and operated by squeezing. And, because they are stored with the spout on, hands stay clean. For usage and safety tips, check out the videos and resources available at www. scepter.com. proper fuel While you’re updating your fuel containers, be sure to restock your fuel too. Keep in mind that fuel sitting unused for many months should be safely discarded, as gas components can deteriorate over time. Changing gasoline out with the seasons keeps it fresh. Having plenty of fuel on hand is not only a key element to powering through yard work and chores, but an important part of extreme weather preparedness. During power outages and in the aftermath of storms, you’ll be able to fuel generators, chainsaws and other gaspowered equipment without worrying about your supply. So don’t wait until a storm is in the forecast to stock up on this essential. This fall, equip your shed or garage with the fuel and fuel storage solutions you need for a safe and productive season. 3 Tips to Prepare for Turkey Hunting Season (statepoint) Want to hunt turkeys on your home turf this fall? You’ll need to create and manage a habitat that will attract them to your property first. To get started, consider these triedand-true tips from farmer, professional hunter and creator of the “Bone Collector” series, Michael Waddell: • Your lawn mower can help. Yes, believe it or not, mowing the pastures or food plots where you plan to hunt makes a huge difference. “What you’ll find, is that right at daylight with a heavy dew on the ground, the turkeys won’t come out in a food plot with high grass because they don’t want to get wet,” says Waddell. “You need to keep in mind turkey legs are only so tall and they get their feathers all wet, and it’s just aggravating to them.” Mow your plots and you improve your chances of turkeys using them. • But, don’t mow everything. Turkeys
22
use tall grass during the day once the dew has evaporated, so you don’t want to mow your entire lawn too low. Keeping some of the grass high allows the poults and hens to come out and eat bugs while still having shelter from other predators like hawks. Waddell suggests mowing around the edges where you want to concentrate your turkeys, and then creating some lanes through the grass to create a “turkey funnel,” so to speak. “Now I’m a man who likes to be successful,” says Waddell. “And this works. Year after year, I do this and it pays off every year.” • Keep your blades high. While you can maintain your property with a tractor or bush hog, Waddell says his lawn mower is more convenient. Just be sure to mow at a high blade setting to avoid damaging the machinery with rocks and other debris. Waddell explains
that he uses the same Exmark Lazer Z zero-turn mower to maintain his home property, so it’s important to keeps his blades in good shape. For more of Waddell’s tips and secrets, check out the new Exmark Original video, “Backyard Life, Turkey Habitat Tips.” The episode can be found by visiting Exmark.com/ Backyard, a multimedia destination with a focus on giving home and acreage owners the tips and know-how to make the most of their outdoor experience and live more life outdoors. You can also access content on lawn-andgarden, outdoor cooking and rural lifestyles. A good turkey habitat in turn creates good hunting opportunities. To ready your property for turkey hunting season, build out a plot of land that is friendly for turkeys to nest, feed and hide from other predators. F

Why Weighing Your Medicare Part D Options is Crucial This Year (statepoint) You likely hear the same word of advice every fall: review your Medicare Part D plan. While you may be tempted to stick with what you have, it’s important to remember that plan specifics change annually, your health needs are always evolving, and as this year has shown, unexpected global events can impact your health and finances. For all these reasons, doing your homework is not only important, it has the power to substantially reduce your out-of-pocket costs. “Reviewing your Medicare Part D options is the best way to ensure your prescription needs are met affordably in the coming year,” says Kelle Turner, Express Scripts Medicare Part D expert. “COVID-19 has highlighted how having
24
the right coverage is critical to helping you stay safe and healthy.” To help those turning 65 and older make sense of their options, Turner offers the following tips: • Don’t procrastinate: Part D enrollment is taking place from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 this year. If you’re like most people, you may be inclined to delay your decision. Indeed, nine out of 10 people wait until the last minute to select a plan, according to Express Scripts. However, the selection process can be complicated, so don’t deprive yourself of the time needed to thoughtfully comparison shop. Factor in how the COVID-19 landscape has potentially impacted your selection process. With many in-person resources

(e.g., local Medicare workshops, working with a broker or agent, etc.) being conducted virtually or requiring advance scheduling this year, you can get ahead of the game by starting early. One good resource to check out is RoadmapForMedicare.com, a free access website now offering short educational videos, recorded webinars and articles with tips to select the plan that’s best for you. The site also features FAQs and expert advice so you can better assess your options. • Look beyond premiums: While reviewing your options, look at the multiple factors which can affect your overall costs over the course of the year. While a lower premium might save you money upfront, these plans can have much higher copayments, which over time can add up. • Check coverage: Plans change annually, so don’t assume that because your medications were covered under a certain plan last year that they will be covered again this year. Before enrolling or re-enrolling, check that your current drugs will be covered. Likewise, check out each plan’s pharmacy network and what is covered to ensure that it meets your needs. For example, you may find that right now, your top priority is the safety and convenience of home delivery of prescriptions drugs in order to reduce your chances of exposure to coronavirus. • Get savvy: Free expert advice can help you navigate the selection process and make informed decisions about your healthcare. Be sure to look for trusted sources who can provide the information you need to pick the plan that will work best for you and your budget. Take a closer look at your Medicare Part D choices. In these uncertain times, it is particularly important to be prepared to weather whatever comes your way. ✦

Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic (statepoint) Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semi-annual survey of small and midsize business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of busi-

nesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems, electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/identity protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products and services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent of those, the decrease is

considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. ✦

navigate an unusual school year: • A Library Card: If students lack access to the school’s physical library, your public library can be an invaluable fount of information to turn to this school year. While it’s true that some library systems have limited their print materials available for checkout, keep in mind that many offer a rich collection of electronic resources, which can be checked out instantaneously from the safety of home. • Math Tools: Math class can be an especially challenging subject for students to tackle in the remote learning context. Luckily, online tools exist which can help. Check out ClassPad.net, a free webbased platform featuring tools for calculation, graphing, geometry, statistics and more. Its interactive menu enables students and educators to draw geometry figures freehand and input calculations as they would on scratch paper. Users

can also plot data points, as well as add text labels, expressions and pictures to graphs or geometry diagrams. However, for those who prefer a physical graphing calculator, look for a tool that can handle coursework now and in the future. For example, the fx-9750GIII from Casio contains all the features needed to make remote coursework easy to follow. Finally, students of all grade levels, from kindergarten through college, can learn new mathematical techniques and supplement their studies using free downloadable activities created by teachers. To access these resources, visit casioeducation.com. • A Dedicated Workspace: While desks used for remote learning may double function as a place for free time journaling and personal projects, drawing a clear mental separation between the school day and personal life is important. Students can make a few visual swaps to signal when class is in session and it is time to focus on schoolwork. These swaps may include using a particular setting on the desk lamp, clearing away personal objects or tacking up school-related paperwork to a corkboard during the day. • A Hotspot: If you have multiple people learning and working from home, it doesn’t hurt to have a mobile hotspot on hand in case of Internet outages or other connection snafus. This can help ensure students don’t miss a remote class session or lose their connection when it’s most needed. • Smart Planners: Free apps can help students organize their coursework so they never forget an assignment or quiz, as well as offer the tools needed for better time management. Unlike traditional paper planners or calendars, a smart digital planner actually learns the habits of the student in order to tailor push notifications and alerts. As your family once again falls into the groove of distance-learning, a few tools and considerations can help expand everyone’s ability to work from home. F

By Slim Randles dewey decker showed his new business cards to the other guys at the Mule Barn Truck Stop’s philosophy counter, and each member of the world dilemma think tank got to keep one. Steve, our owlish-appearing cowboy, scratched his head as he studied the card. “Okay, Dewey, I’ll bite … what’s a verm-a- ….? “Vermiculturist, Steve,” Dewey said, proudly. “It means I raise worms.” Dewey, the beloved accident-prone member of the think tank, began his new career with just a shovel and his pickup, spreading manure in people’s yards. Now, thanks in great part to the genius of his girlfriend, Emily, (she of the magnificent cheekbones) he was earning a decent living. Back when they fell in love … and that’s literally, because Dewey tripped, she took this crash-and-burn disaster and molded him into a multidimensional businessman, while still keeping him away from sharp objects or things that crush. Dewey has branched out now into compost, worms (excuse me … vermiculture) and fertilizer tea. The tea goes on

the lawn, not in the tea cups. “Dewey,” said Doc, “this vermiculture stuff now … how much work is it, really?” “That’s the good part about it, Doc. You see, I don’t have to do anything at all, really, except keep them in … product, you know. They reproduce without any outside help, and turn manure into the best compost in the world. Then you can sell them to other people to work their compost piles, or to fishermen.” “Well, Dewey,” said Herb, “it looks to me like simply being a vermiculturist doesn’t really cover the subject. Wouldn’t those red wigglers also make you a compostocologist?” “Hadn’t really thought about …” Dewey said. “And when it comes to selling them to fishermen,” Doc said, “wouldn’t you be an ichthymasticatiousdietician?” “I … I …” “Yes, Dewey?” “I refuse to be anything I can’t spell.”✦ Pick up “Home Country: Drama, dreams and laughter from the American heartland” www.lpdpress.com.
