2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Turns Any Drive into an Exciting Excursion By Ron Moorhead
Photos courtesy of Hyundai
hyundai’s mid-sized sedan has, as most of the Hyundai line up, gone through a variety of styling and engineering innovations that have set this sedan high on most auto reviewers’ lists for many years now. Hyundai has cutting-edge styling that gets noticed, excellent engineering with enviable reliability and an earned practicality that sets it high on buyers’ lists. The 2020 Sonata gets noticed as it travels through a sea of sameness on the highways and byways of America.
The new exterior styling is sharp and edgy. It is contemporary without being outlandish. The Sonata’s new platform is the basis for solid performance in handling and ride comfort. This exciting design territory extends to the interior as well as where we see an upscale styling that makes you feel you are traveling in a much more expensive vehicle. The new exterior design is edgy with a quickly sloping hood that flows into a low, wide grill anchored
by sleek aerodynamic LED light modules. The reversed boomerang shaped side lights add an exotic sports carlike accent. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is available in several different models. For our test, we were able to get a new Hybrid Limited that offers up excellent performance while serving up a good dose of practicality. Not a usual entry on our want list. We love hybrids for what they offer. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE →

The new Sonata Hybrid has a 2-liter, four-cylinder gas engine coupled with a 38-kilowatt electric motor. Performance from the combined 192 horsepower is impressive with good launch from stops and impressive economy stats. EPA ratings for the 2020 Sonata Hybrid are 45 miles per gallon city, 51 highway and 47 combined. We achieved in the neighborhood of 46-47 mpg during our test. The coup-like exterior design might give the impression that interior space in the rear seat area, particularly headroom, would be compromised. We found the interior to be roomy and quite comfortable. The front leather bucket seats are supportive and firm, yet comfortable, even on lengthy rides. That could be thanks to the heated and ventilated feature. The rear leather seat has plenty of legroom, even with the front seats adjusted for a 6-foot driver and passenger. The issue of headroom is nearly nonexistent as the rear headroom is a scant 1.5-inches less than the front seat. Considering the coup-like slope to the roof that gives the Sonata its good looks, this is quite accommodating. Our Sonata was a Limited model with a plethora of equipment that was “included” according to the Monroney window sticker. In fact, the only two additions to the bottom line here were the optional floor mats

at $155 and the destination charge of $975. But even with that, this 2020 Hyundai Sonata had a final list price of $36,430. Price out a similar vehicle from a popular Japanese manufacturer and you would be up in the $40,000 range. Included in the standard equipment list with our test Sonata Hybrid was a solar roof panel that puts juice back in the batteries. Also included in that long list of features are adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, drowsy driver monitor, rear-passenger reminder and forward collision mitigation. Beyond the usual interior techy features, our test Sonata was equipped with the side view camera display in the instrument panel. Operate the right turn signal and you get a perfect, clear video view of the Sonata’s right side, much like the side mirror. Though we always advise drivers get in the habit of watching all mirrors this was a cool feature that enhances safety. We admit we have been fans of most of the products Hyundai produces and certainly the 2020 Sonata moves to the top of that list. This sedan is good looking, sporty, comfortable and can turn a boring drive into a fun excursion. ✦ Copyright © 2020 autoreviewsplus.com

By Kenny Priest the lack of rain isn’t doing the run of late-fall kings any favors but it is keeping the California halibut fishery alive. Without an influx of freshwater from the rains and with enough food SWEETHEARTMOTORS.ORG to keep them happy, there’s no reason for the halibut to leave. Though the effort has dwindled, there are still enough halibut in the bay to make for a great day. The few boats still targeting them are finding success using artificial baits, with swimbaits being the top producer. Most of the live bait left the bay toward the end of September but enough halibut have hung around to make it worth your while. ing. The rivers can be opened at any time. The low flow closure hotline for North Coast rivers is 822-3164. Lower Klamath Very few salmon, if any, are entering the mouth of the Klamath. Most are in the upper reaches or are in the Trinity. There are a few adult steelhead and some half-pounders making their way through the lower river. Trinity I’m starting to hear of salmon in the Douglas City area, so it sounds like there’s fish spread throughout the river. Junction City Store owner Frank Chapman reports, “We’re not seeing a whole lot of steelhead right now. One boat drifted the upper end on Monday and only got a couple small ones. We really need some rain to put both salmon and steelhead on the move.” Smith According to Britt Carson of Crescent City’s Englund Marine, there are a few salmon being caught at the mouth. “Guys tossing Cleos are catching a few each day,” said Carson. “There are quite a few jacks being caught and I’ve seen adults up to 30 pounds landed. Upriver, most of the deeper holes are full of salmon. We just need some rain in order to open the river to fishing,” added Carson. The river is currently closed to fishing above the mouth of Rowdy Creek due to low flows. Read the complete fishing report at www.northcoastjournal.com.

Honing Your Small Business Toolkit in Uncertain Times © Jacoblund / iStock via Getty Images Plus
(statepoint) It’s been a challenging year for small businesses, with local shutdowns requiring many operations to close their doors, some temporarily, all while weathering the ripple effects of a global economic downturn. However, experts say that by getting back to basics and honing your small business toolkit, you can run a tighter ship, leaving your enterprise in a better position to survive these difficult times.
Here are a few strategies to consider.
Automating Accounting Upgrading your accounting software will help you avoid errors that are common with manual number crunching and leave you well-prepared should your business be randomly audited. Keeping your books in order and automating back-office tasks like this will save you substantial time and energy,
which is especially important these days when your attention is better spent on the big-picture aspects of running your business. Just be sure to choose a trusted, vetted solution.
Ditching Paper Payroll A 2019 survey by Intuit QuickBooks and Kelton Global found that small business owners spend on average 4.5 hours each pay period preparing, calculating,

Amid COVID-19 Pandemic, Stop the Spread of Flu StatePoint.net
(StatePoint) Amid the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, with hospitals and health care workers already overburdened, medical experts say it’s more important than ever to slow the spread of the flu. In a typical year, the flu causes tens of millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. That is why the Ad Council, the American Medical Association (AMA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC
Foundation have launched a new campaign, “No One Has Time for Flu.” As part of the campaign, Dr. Susan R. Bailey, M.D., president of the AMA, is sharing important insights about flu vaccination: • Flu vaccines are safe: The flu vaccine is a safe, effective step that physicians and public health experts recommend to protect patients and their loved ones from getting sick with influenza. This year, doctor’s offices and pharmacies are taking steps to ensure

vaccines can be provided safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CDC recommends that each year everyone 6 months and older (with rare exceptions) get a flu vaccine early in the season, preferably by the end of October, before flu is spreading widely. • Getting one is important this year: Because you can get flu and COVID-19 at the same time, it’s especially important for people with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk of serious complications — and their caregivers — to get their flu shot. At the community level, the potential impact of a bad flu season during the COVID-19 pandemic could be devastating. Getting a flu shot will help keep others healthy and help make sure health care workers and hospitals have the resources to continue to treat COVID-19 patients. • Flu protection is especially urgent for people of color: Due to longstanding health care inequities, Black and Latinx/ Hispanic people are disproportionately affected by underlying conditions which can cause both COVID-19 and flu complications. This results in much greater rates of flu-related hospitalizations. Indeed, a new CDC analysis of 10 flu seasons showed that Black people were hospitalized at a rate twice as high

as white people. Black and LatinX/Hispanic communities are also less likely to get vaccinated due to a range of barriers. CDC data shows that in the 2019-20 flu season, Latinx/Hispanic adults had the lowest flu vaccination coverage (38.3 percent), with non-Hispanic Black adults next lowest (41.2 percent). • Getting vaccinated is easy: Vaccines are often free or offered at very low cost. To learn more about safe, affordable flu vaccination, including where to get one in your area, visit GetMyFluShot. org. You can also view a short video on flu vaccination by visiting, youtu.be/ cl7wNuU5IIU. “No one has time to get sick from flu —especially this year,” says Dr. Bailey. “Getting a flu shot is one thing we all can do to help protect ourselves, our families and our communities.” F

5 Ways to Make Your Home a Healthier Place to Be (statepoint) Our homes are our sanctuaries. It’s more important than ever to ensure your home is a safe and healthy environment for you and your family. Indoor air quality can have a negative effect on your health, and the air inside your home is oftentimes more polluted than the air outside. Explore five effective wellness design principles that can lead to better indoor air quality and on overall healthier home. 1. Increase natural light. One of the most effective ways for improving the interior environment of your home is by bringing in more sunlight. Sunlight also provides numerous health and wellness benefits: • helping the body to produce vitamin D • boosting productivity • promoting better sleep by helping the body maintain its circadian rhythm • improving your mood and energy Consider large windows and window combinations. ziness, and over time, can even cause organ damage, according to the EPA. However, “zero-VOC” and “low-VOC” options exist and selecting these alternatives will minimize the potential for these common pollutants to impact the air quality in your home, helping reduce health risks to you and your family. 3. Foster ventilation. Ventilation helps your home rid itself of moisture, smoke, cooking odors and indoor pollutants. Natural ventilation is a great alternative to air conditioning in moderate climates. To ensure maximum ventilation, be selective about the insect screens you choose for your windows and doors. TruScene insect screens from Andersen for example, let in over 25 percent more fresh air and 50 percent more clarity than standard Andersen fiberglass insect screens, making them a good choice for people who want to take advantage of open windows. 4. Eliminate dust. Accumulated dust can irritate the eyes, lungs and skin and further aggravate the symptoms of people living with allergies. Sometimes attempts to free a home of dust only end up kicking up more debris. To avoid this, use wet dusting methods. When it’s time to empty vacuum bags and canisters, do so carefully — this is one task that may be best to perform outdoors. Finally, make maintaining a dust-free home easier by investing in an air purifier. Consider also selecting machine washable curtains, furniture covers and other fabrics. 5. Decorate with plants. Decorating your living spaces with plants is not only a beautiful design statement, but plants act as natural air purifiers, absorbing toxicants and converting indoor carbon dioxide into oxygen. For more healthy home ideas and inspiration, visit andersenwindows.com. Improving the interior environment of your home is vital. Fortunately, there are many effective steps you can take to promote healthy indoor spaces. ✦

What Every Chronic Pain Sufferer Needs to Know Photo Source: Grant Waite
(statepoint) According to a new survey from Boston Scientific of more than 500 people with chronic pain, 60 percent aren’t satisfied with their current treatment or therapies. Professional golfer Grant Waite can relate. Repetitive, rotational movements make golf incredibly stressful on the back. Waite tried multiple surgeries, which didn’t provide relief, and he said he couldn’t function while taking prescription medications. Twelve years ago, the pain in his back was so debilitating he could barely get out of bed, let alone play professional golf or spend time with his family. “Pain is debilitating not just physically,
but mentally and emotionally because there’s no escaping it. When you’re in pain, it’s just difficult to function.” According to the CDC, more than 50 million chronic pain sufferers nationwide are struggling with pain that lasts for six months or longer without finding relief. One of the most common reasons that adults seek medical care, chronic pain has been linked to restrictions in mobility and daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety and depression, and reduced quality of life. Unfortunately, less than half of those surveyed are aware of drug-free, minimally-invasive, interventional therapies helping patients such as Waite return to

activities they love and regain hope for their future. Waite sought help from a pain management specialist – a doctor specially trained to address acute and chronic pain. That’s when he learned about spinal cord stimulation (SCS). SCS is an FDA-approved implanted medical device that interrupts pain signals from reaching the brain. Unlike some surgical procedures, it can be personalized to an individual’s needs and is reversible. Patients undergo a trial period, allowing them to evaluate and adjust the pain relief delivered before deciding to receive a permanent implant. Initially, Waite didn’t know much about this treatment, but after completing his trial and full implantation with the Boston Scientific Spectra WaveWriter SCS System, he champions it. “Before SCS, my pain forced me to give up my active lifestyle, which was hard. Now there are very few limitations on what I can do,” says Waite, who is back to playing golf, working out, and even hiking and traveling with his family. “The experience of chronic pain is complex and unique to every person. But pain management specialists have

many tools in our arsenal that can provide adequate, lasting, personalized pain relief,” says Dr. Steve Pyles, a pain specialist and founder of the Pain Treatment Centers in Florida. The new survey found that 94 percent of chronic pain sufferers would try an FDA-approved, drug-free alternative to help manage chronic pain, but less than half have ever seen a pain specialist. Dr. Pyles notes that for patients with chronic pain in the lower back, legs and feet, SCS offers a personalized experience that can treat multiple pain areas simultaneously. For those suffering from moderate lumbar spinal stenosis, interspinous spacers may relieve pain and discomfort in the lower back, legs, groin and buttocks. Alternatively, radiofrequency ablation delivers a small current to interrupt pain signals at the source. To find a local pain management specialist and learn more about chronic pain, visit www.pain.com, an educational site from Boston Scientific. You can also take a pain assessment quiz and connect with other patients. Life with chronic pain can be allencompassing. However, experts say that non-drug therapies are providing tangible relief to patients. F

(statepoint) Electrical fires often occur unexpectedly in locations that may be hidden from view. As the second most common type of home fire in the U.S., more than 40,000 electrical fires occur in American homes every year, resulting in hundreds of deaths, over 1,000 injuries and more than $1 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association. “With millions of Americans working and learning from home amid COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to take a few simple steps to protect your home and loved ones from electrical fires,” says Ashley Bryant, National Electrical Manufacturers Association Low Voltage Distribution Equipment AFCI Task Force co-chair. To make needed updates at home, consider these safety tips from the NEMA LVDE AFCI Task Force: 1. Take Care with Cords: Inspect cords regularly for signs of damage or wear and tear. Use extension cords properly and according to the load ratings for the product. Never overload them or run cords under furniture, carpets or rugs. 2. Examine Appliances: When using appliances, inspect them for signs of damage. Only use the appliance in its intended manner. 3. Ensure Products Meet Safety Standards: To ensure the products you use at home comply with national safety
standards, always look for the label of a nationally-recognized testing laboratory, like UL, CSA or Intertek. 4. Consider Additional Protection: Arcing was the heat source in approximately three of five electrical home fires from 2012-2016, according to the National Fire Protection Association. However, you can help prevent this dangerous condition from leading to a worst case scenario with Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs). AFCIs are designed to monitor the circuit for the presence of “normal” and “dangerous” arcing conditions in order to reduce the chance of your electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. An affordable, proven smart technology that provides a higher level of protection than standard circuit breakers, AFCIs have been a National Electrical Code requirement in new home building since 1999 for certain electrical circuits. To better protect your entire home, experts recommend requesting AFCI protection on all 15 and 20A branch circuits. To learn more about electrical fire prevention and AFCI technology, visit afcisafety.org. Electrical fires can be devastating and lethal. Fortunately, there are simple proactive steps every household can take that can help stop an electrical fire before it starts. ➮

CROSSWORD by David Levinson Wilk
it’s a rare treat to have old Jasper Blankenship come down from the diggins to stock up on supplies. And he favored us with stories at the Mule Barn this bright morning over coffee, too. “Well, Doc,” Jasper said, “you’re right. I wasn’t always a miner. Back during the war, I had a job in the city at one of the big war plants, you know. I was a security guard and watched the gate. In those days, there was this one carpenter who just gave me the fits. He’d come out the gate at the end of the day with a wheelbarrow full of sawdust. I always stopped him and poked around in the sawdust and never found anything, but I just knew he was stealing something.” Jasper took a sip of coffee. “Well, sir, four five years ago I was wetting my whistle up north a ways and this guy walked in and I knew him from somewhere so I struck up a conversation with him. Turns out he was this same carpenter guy who was wheeling that dang sawdust out the gate every afternoon. I knew this was my chance, as so many years had gone by since we both worked there. “I told him I always knew he was stealing from the plant but could never find it in all that sawdust. I said it was a long time ago, so would he mind ‘fessing up to it, just to satisfy my mind? “He just grinned at me. So I got another round for us, and he seemed friendlier then. So I tried again. ‘Come on, pardner,’ I said, ‘I know you were stealing something there. What was it?’” Jasper grinned. “He smiled at me and said, ‘Wheelbarrows.’” F
