CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS Q&A
Does CDFW Offer Hunt Season Dates for Muzzleloaders Only? Muzzleloading Hunts Q: Howdy. I won a muzzleloader in a drawing but have never shot one before or been acquainted with the regulations. Are there specific hunt season dates in California for muzzleloaders only, so we’re not competing with modern rifles and scopes? A: For the 2021 deer season, CDFW offered 10 muzzleloading rifle hunts which can be found via the “Additional Hunts” link under the “Seasons” tab of our Deer Hunting webpage. You can also find them on page 33 of CDFW’s 2021 Big Game Hunting Digest. The letter “M” designates a muzzleloading rifle hunt and “MA” designates muzzleloading rifle/archery hunt. During both of these types of hunts, only open or “peep” type sights can be used. Scopes are not permitted. Season dates and number of tags available are listed. Hunters must apply for a tag through CDFW’s annual Big Game Drawing before the June application deadline. Muzzleloading hunts are for limited areas and are usually scheduled late in the year, which make them desirable but harder to draw. For deer hunting, be familiar with the Methods Authorized for Taking Big Game regulation section. You can also use your muzzleloading rifle during a general season that you have a tag for. You could even use a scope during a general season and you wouldn’t be restricted to only open or “peep” type sights. If you’re interested, there are other opportunities such as muzzleloading shotguns for resident small game. CDFW reminds hunters that nonlead ammunition is required when taking wildlife with any firearm in California, including muzzleloaders.
Delta Blob Q: I enjoy recreating in the Delta, and occasionally on my walks I see these ge-

latinous brown blobs in the water that look a little like jellyfish. They seem to appear in summer. What are those? A: The critters you see on your walks are freshwater bryozoan. The scientific name is Pectinatella magnifica. They were originally found on the east coast and made their way west. Scientists wrote in 2005 about discovering freshwater bryozoan in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. However, it is likely that bryozoan arrived in the Delta years earlier. Bryozoan are very common seasonally in the Delta and probably in all lower elevation freshwater reservoirs in California. We often hear them referred to as “blobs,” but really they are a colony of small individual animals in a gelatinous matrix. As you mentioned, they are usually found in warmer waters from June through September. They are not poisonous and do not sting, but we’d suggest washing your hands if you
come into contact with one. See the U.S. Geological Survey website for more information and links.
Big Game Rifle Q: Could you help me with information regarding the use of an AR 556/223 rifle for hunting? It’s a California compliant rifle with a 5-round magazine. Would this be a legal setup for hunting? A: Yes, you can use the rifle you described as long as it is California compliant per the California Attorney General’s Office. California hunting regulations restrict the cartridge and bullet type for hunting big game, but not the firearm itself. In short, big game may only be taken by firearms using centerfire cartridges with soft nose or expanding projectiles, per California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 353(c). Pay close attention to be sure your .223 bullets fit this description,
N O R T H C O A S T T R A D E R • S E P T. 7 - S E P T. 2 1 , 2 0 2 1
as most .223 bullets are manufactured with full metal jackets, which would be unlawful to use. Your other consideration is required use of nonlead ammunition for all hunting in California, which is usually a specialty ammunition type for the .223 or the similar 5.56. By your own evaluation, it sounds like you have determined your AR 556/223 is California compliant and you have nonlead ammunition. Check that third box that the bullets are soft nose or expanding projectiles and you are good to go. Your 5-round magazine is also legal to use. See CCR, Title 14, section 353 for more details on authorized methods of take for big game. Good luck on your hunt!

Dove Opener Q: I am planning to hunt the dove opener in Imperial County on September 1. I understand that CDFW produces maps that show the fields that were planted. Where would I find those? And do you have any forecast for how the season might look this year? A: Yes! CDFW posts maps of the planted fields in Imperial County on its website. Wheat and sunflower were the primary crops planted, and some fields have additional Sudan, Bermuda and alfalfa. It has been a hot, dry year and the drought has certainly affected agriculture, which in turn affects dove presence and movement. We have had mixed reports across the state, with some areas experiencing high numbers of first year birds and some with very few. As always, we hope for an exceptional hunting season and wish our hunters the best of luck in the field this year. ✦ If you have a question you would like to see answered in the California Outdoors Q and A column, email it to CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov.

MONEY
Getting Smart About Your Credit Score (StatePoint) Good credit opens doors. Not only can it help you secure an affordable loan, but it is also often needed for access to open everyday accounts, such as for your utility services and cell phone. It can help you land a job, boost your chances of securing an apartment, and even improve your dating prospects, according to research. Whether your credit is “good” is determined by your credit history, which looks at your payment patterns over time and your credit score, which rates your credit risk at a moment in time. But it’s more complicated than that, and if you’re like many Americans, you may be confused by some of the details. According to a recent Freddie Mac survey of homeowners and renters, one in three Americans isn’t aware that credit score elements such as the length of credit usage or having joint credit and loan accounts are reported to credit bureaus. Additionally, more than half of homeowners and renters aren’t aware that being behind on housing payment can result in an impaired credit rating, and nearly 60% don’t know or realize it can impact their ability to get a loan in the future. To get a handle on your credit, consider these tips: 1. Pay on time. The best thing you can do to build, maintain or improve your credit is pay bills on time. The types of accounts considered for credit payment history include: • Credit cards • Retail accounts, such as credit cards from department stores • Installment loans, such as car loans, on which you make regular payments • Mortgage loans • Student loans • Finance company accounts, such as car dealer in-house lenders 2. Watch your credit card balance. If you allow your credit cards to reach
10

high, unpaid balances, or if you only pay the minimum due, credit cards can cost you hundreds (and even thousands) of dollars in interest and can impair your credit. 3. Review your credit report annually. You’re entitled to receive a free copy of your credit report each year from each major credit bureau via annualcreditreport.com. You can also keep an eye on your credit score through free apps such as Credit Karma, NerdWallet, WalletHub or others. Be aware, however, the scores shown in these apps are not the same as FICO scores used by most lenders and creditors to make lending or credit decisions. Still, they’re useful for reviewing the financial activities affecting your credit. 4. Get savvy. Education has power. Learn more about managing credit by checking out Freddie Mac’s free suite of financial education resources,
CreditSmart. Over the past two decades, more than 5 million consumers have benefitted from these tools and now this program can be customized by users. “Financial education is personal. Whether you’re renting a home, are on the path to homeownership or saving for the future, our newly released curriculum empowers you to customize your experience and learn at your own pace,” says Cindy Waldron, vice president, Single-Family Housing Insights and Solutions at Freddie Mac. To access these resources, which are available online or on mobile devices, visit creditsmart.freddiemac.com. The impact of good credit on your life can’t be overstated. Use free resources to learn more about how it works. Then, stay on top of your credit by actively monitoring it and working to improve it. F

Why Now is the Time to Schedule That Check-Up or Screening (statepoint) If you haven’t visited your physician since the start of the pandemic, medical experts say that the time is now to book check-ups and screenings for the entire family. “The pandemic has had wide-scale negative health consequences beyond COVID-19. Many Americans have delayed important routine health services critical to keeping them healthy, including vital pediatric immuniza-
tions and preventive cancer screenings. Prevention is the best cure, so it’s important to get your health back on track today,” says Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., American Medical Association (AMA) president. With school beginning and the cool weather months ahead, the AMA urges Americans to call their physician’s office to learn if they are due for preventive care or screenings. ✦

FAMILY LIVING
Celebrate Birthdays From a Safe Social Distance (Family Features) A year into the COVID-19 pandemic, finding safe ways to celebrate special events like birthdays can provide a boost for mental health. W h e th e r yo u’ re celebrating a kid or a kid at heart, planning a socially distant birthday party is a way to enjoy some camaraderie and honor life’s important milestones.
For Kids Younger partygoers may be more difficult to corral than adults who have a better understanding of social distancing guidelines. That’s why it’s a good idea to host kids’ parties outdoors. • Art Far Apart – Use the sidewalk or driveway as a canvas and have each kid (and parent) spread out. Provide trays of supplies like chalk or washable paint and encourage kids to interact with sing-a-long songs and games. • Driveway Performance – Many kid-friendly entertainers who made a living with special appearances at schools, libraries and other family events have modified their performances to accommodate small, private crowds. Look into local musicians, magicians and other kid-friendly performers who might set up in your yard or driveway while guests lounge on blankets and chairs from a comfortable distance. • Birthday Parade – If getting together isn’t practical, you can still make

a little one’s day special by hosting a drive-by parade. Allow the birthday boy or girl to dress up in his or her birthday best and create a throne to sit on while watching friends and family drive by and wave from cars decorated with streamers and balloons. (If you live in a smaller community, check with the local police or fire station to see if they’re willing to get in on the fun with a guest drive-by appearance.)
For Adults Like kids, many adults are simply craving personal interaction, so even the simplest of gatherings can make a birthday feel special. • Wine Tasting – Set up a series of seating areas around the backyard where same household groups can gather. Use disposable shot glasses to serve
flights of wine samples to each group or ask guests to bring their own and use flowerpots filled with ice to keep bottles chilled. • Pool Party – While kids young and old are likely to enjoy a party set poolside, an older crowd is more likely to keep some distance in the water. Scatter some shade umbrellas around so each group has its own home base and plan on single-serve refreshments or ask guests to bring their own coolers. • Driveway Dinner – Simply hanging out feels like a treat these days, so set up lawn chairs and let everyone place a delivery order. Add some background music and individual desserts then let the good times roll. Look for more entertaining advice in a COVID world and beyond at eLivingtoday.com. F

HOME
Statepoint.net
3 Ways to Fuse Art and Nature in Your Home (StatePoint) Beyond sprucing up your work and living environs, there’s certainly much to love about houseplants, whether it’s the simple act of taking care of something or the fact that some varietals can even improve the air quality in your home (peace lilies, we’re looking at you). However, if you’re like many people who have done virtually everything from home this past year, your living room has turned into a veritable plant nursery. Rather than add more plants to your living spaces haphazardly, consider these easy tips from LiveTrends, a company that creates and designs over 500 original living art product collections each year: • Befriend color. When it comes to pots for your greenery, succulent and
20
shrubs, you may think neutral is the way to go. Think again. Right now, it’s all about attention-grabbing colors, such as mustard, navy and wine, which are featured in the Harvest Votive and Agatha styles from LiveTrends’ fall 2021 collection. When you fuse nature with bold hues, you can easily elevate a houseplant into art status. Bonus: You don’t have to shell out serious dough like you would for framed wall art or a sculpture. • Add joy. The pandemic accelerated the plant parent trend and many found themselves deeply embracing “biophilia,” or the innate desire to connect with nature — from the great indoors that is. To give you a moment of joy during your day or even perk up your Zoom background, look for whimsical and fun plant designs.
• Make holiday swaps. Add vitality to your holiday home decorating game by swapping in festive plants for elements in your regular lineup. During Halloween for example, LiveTrends offers designs like the delightfully ghoulish yogi skeleton mini plants, a collection of skeleton figures seated in Sukhasana pose. During the winter holiday season, their “Snomann” plants make a cute and festive addition to your mantel or tablescape. For more design inspiration and tips or to view the latest collections, visit instagram.com/livetrendsdesign. By fusing nature with art, you can elevate your houseplant collection and create truly beautiful living spaces in your home. F

GARDENING
Designing Gardens for Year-Round Color and Protecting Your Investment by Melinda Myers Create a colorful year-round garden filled with flowers, greenery, colorful fruit, fall color, winter interest and a few surprises. Consider seasonal interest when planning a new garden or landscape. Adding a few key plants to existing gardens can help boost your landscape’s seasonal appeal. Include a variety of plants with multiple seasons of interest as well as bird and pollinator appeal. You will look forward to the change of seasons as your landscape transforms throughout the year. Use trees and shrubs to provide the framework and longevity in your landscape. Serviceberries, crabapples, dogwoods and many others have flowers, fruit, pollinator and bird appeal and add winter interest with their bark or form. Look for those with colorful exfoliating bark like paperbark maple, heptacodium and river birch for a beautiful statement in the winter garden. Include a few summer blooming shrubs like St. John’s wort, buttonbush, panicle hydrangeas and Rose of Sharon. They add an unexpected fresh look to your summer landscape. Perennials combine nicely with trees, shrubs and annuals, adding seasons of color and texture. Include those that also attract songbirds, bees and butterflies by creating a beautiful habitat. Blue star (Amsonia), Siberian iris, sedum,

Rudbeckia, coneflower and grasses are just a few that can brighten any garden with several seasons of color, and provide homes for beneficial insects and food for the birds. End the season with fall bloomers like goldenrod, asters and hardy mums. These provide food for late season pollinators. Leave healthy plants standing, providing homes for many beneficial insects, winter interest in the garden and food for the songbirds. Use annuals to fill any voids, add season long color and yearly changes in the landscape. Containers on steps, decks and patios help bring the garden to your front and back door. Include spring flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths planted in fall for a colorful welcome to spring. These and many of the earliest bloomers like winter aconites, grape hyacinths and crocus provide needed nectar for early season pollinators. Evergreens are always a welcome ad-
dition to any landscape. They provide shelter for the birds and year-round greenery. Find new and interesting ways to include them in your landscape. Use taller evergreens for screening bad views, buffering traffic and other noises, or creating privacy. Use evergreens with interesting form and texture to create a focal point in a garden bed or landscape. Combine them with perennials and flowering shrubs for added seasonal interest. Then keep your landscape looking its best by protecting key plants from hungry critters like deer, rabbits and voles. Skip the fencing and scare tactics by applying a rain resistant, organic repellent like Plantskydd (plantskydd.com) at planting. You will need fewer applications and the odor-based repellent sends animals dining elsewhere before taking a bite out of your plants. Apply repellent before animals start feeding and follow the label directions for best results.

It was Thursday again. Mabel Adams asked at the desk to be sure. “Thursday all day, Mabel,” the girl said. “Don’t forget to get your hair donetoday. Two o’clock … right?” “Right,” Mabel said, locking the time away in her mind. “Two o’clock. On Thursday.” She took her purple walker and went half a block to the counter at the drugstore. That nice Williams girl came over with a smile and a menu. “Tuna on toast, Mrs. Adams?” “Uh, sure. I like that.” “Hot tea?” “Yes please.” After she ate, she started down the sidewalk toward the Curl Up ‘N Dye beauty parlor. The watch pinned on her dress said one forty five. Mabel went over to her usual chair and sat down. Fran came over and looked at Mabel’s hair with a smile. “You still look pretty ravishing, Mabel,” she said. “Sure you want a touch-up today?” Mabel nodded. “Going to watch that movie with the girls tonight?” Movie. Tonight. “Sure,” said Mabel. It’s nice to live in a small town, because if you don’t know what you are doing, someone else does.
