SOMETHING DIFFERENT Notice anything different? We’ve squared up, changing our look to make the Wedding Guide even more user-friendly and prettier (we think). But beauty is more than cover deep. Inside, we’ve expanded our photographer showcase and broken out a minigallery of cakes and flowers to inspire you, while keeping the efficient and nerve-calming pre-wedding checklist. Not to mention listings to help you find local sources for everything you need to get this party started. Thinking about having your nuptials at home? In this issue, Nora Mounce takes you through the process, pitfalls and payoff of saying “I do” at your own place, with inspiration from a pair of newlywed DIY demigods. Remember, it’s OK to ask for help, whether from pros in the planning business, caterers or friends and family. You might even find enlisting loved ones makes things more memorable. Are you

standing up for your best friend at the wedding? Flip to “Stocked” by JohnMichael Wilkerson and you’ll see how much fun (and low pressure) throwing a stock-the-bar engagement/bachelor/ bachelorette party for the happy couple can be. If you’re blanking on your gift registry, fear not. Amy Barnes is here to help with her treasure trove of last-a-lifetime suggestions — the very gifts she still treasures decades after her own wedding. And for those of you who want to do things a little differently, Susan Penn has some out-of-the-bakery-box ideas for dessert at your wedding. Individual pies, anyone? So grab a seat and a beverage and start flipping through this year ’s Wedding Guide. Feel free to mark it up and dog-ear some pages — we’ll take it as a compliment. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

wedding guide 2017

W

hile styles are fleeting, the meaning behind a wedding is timeless. A public celebration of a very intimate relationship, a wedding is designed to reflect a couple’s unique history and individual personalities. What better setting to tell this story than your own home? Seasoned DIY-er Jennifer Nolen married her sweetheart of 10 years, Brian, at their bungalow in Eureka last July. From the vibrant flowers picked from their backyard, a table offering homemade wine and artisan soda, and cozy pop-up arrangements of furniture in the yard, it was clear the couple poured both their hearts and weekends into creating a personal

setting for their ceremony. After setting a date (Brian’s late father’s birthday) the Nolens decision to host the wedding at home came about naturally. “It’s that kind of a house,” Jennifer says of their 1,200-squarefoot home, built in 1912. On arrival, guests received a program that opened, “Welcome to our house. Grab a drink, wander around, say hello to the chickens.” By seamlessly merging their indoor and outdoor spaces, the couple fearlessly hosted 65 delighted guests. At 6 pm on a summer evening, under a homemade wreath of flowers, Jennifer and Brian’s closest friends and family gathered in their living room to hold hands and watch the couple »

promise to love one another forever. What could possibly be more romantic? A home can be an incredibly intimate and memorable venue to celebrate the braiding of two lives, two families. Having grown the flowers, fermented the wine and made the Pandora playlist (Jennifer even baked their gluten-free wedding cake!), the Nolens managed to throw a beautiful DIY wedding on a small budget. But even for the less industrious, there are options. The cost of a venue rental becomes understandable when you consider the many built-in amenities. To start, does your guest list exceed your bathroom’s capacity? The standard recommendation is one toilet per 35 guests. If you’re over that number, start thinking about where you can put a portable toilet and how many you’ll need. If not rattled by such considerations, the capable and budget-minded couple can manage the to-do list. Table 8 - In the hubbub of choosing food, decor, music and seating arrangements, give yourself plenty of time to imagine what the day will feel like. Hosting a home wedding still affords you a range of styles from a backyard barbecue vibe to a formal, upscale event. Dedicate the most time and energy wherever your true passions lie. If you are a couple of foodies, it might be reasonable to politely decline your Aunt Mary’s offer to cook for 50 guests. Humboldt County has plenty of talented, full-scale catering businesses that will happily bring hot dishes and seasonal salads to your home. Make appointments with caterers a few months in advance so you can spend time » 12

getting your menu dialed in. Perhaps Aunt Mary could be in charge of collecting loaner dishes and cutlery? A buffet table of full of delicious food and mismatched plates, bowls and linen napkins borrowed from your closest family and friends would look oh-so charming. Music - Incorporating live music into a ceremony can be a touching element to a wedding ceremony. And people love to dance. If you’ve got room for a band or a DJ, great. But consider the challenges of acoustics and potential costs of amplification, too. Would your backyard be better suited to a single acoustic musician? If you’re not shy, a

14

wedding guide 2017

low-cost, unforgettable option is to rent a karaoke machine to get the party started. Spend some tender evenings with your betrothed creating a playlist of your favorite songs. Master of Ceremonies - Ask some brides and grooms for their number one tip and you’ll hear, “Hire a wedding planner!” When hosting your special day at home, the feedback remains the same. Your wedding planner will be the calm among the storm — yes, even at a home wedding — of melting buttercream frosting and inebriated uncles. Yet, on a budget, many couples can’t allocate the coin to hire a professional. Bust a hybrid-DIY move by choosing

an assertive friend or relative to act as your day-of wedding planner. Invite Joe or Jane over well in advance to detail operations of your major appliances, making sure they know the trick to loading your dishwasher and jiggling the toilet handle just right. While you’re dancing the Macarena, this allstar guest can oversee post-ceremony cleanup and troubleshoot any pesky home mishaps. Décor - Part of the appeal of a home wedding is letting your personal style come through in the aesthetics of your home. While your home’s everyday look — plus some well-chosen floral arrangements — might be enough for a low-key

ceremony, this could be your chance to go gangbusters on Pinterest. But remember: No matter how adorable your spray-painted wine bottle centerpieces turn out, your guests are there for the eat-drink-and-be-merry factor. So keep it casual with the décor. Invite a gaggle of friends over in advance, requesting that they bring their craft drawers. Provide plenty of vino and when in doubt, never underestimate the power of white twinkly lights. And don’t forget prop rental is always an option if you’re strapped for time or glue-gun shy. Bar Tab - A major slice of pie in any wedding budget is the booze — there’s a reason weddings are so much fun. But in consideration of those who don’t imbibe or in effort to keep the memories clear and budget light, skipping hard alcohol can be a wise choice. Ask guests to participate in a fun new wedding tradition, BYO wine, asking each guest to bring a favorite bottle. Your handy wedding planner-on-the-spot can quickly organize a table with a variety of whites, reds and bubbles, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, allowing guests to serve themselves. It also serves as a fantastic icebreaker and conversation starter for your guests. In the end, wedding planner or no, the advice is the same — let your wedding be your own. Follow your whims and you and your guests will remember the unique celebration for a lifetime. Left: Out back with the chickens. Right: Garden seating.

Kitchen Knives Instead of a mediocre kitchen knife set, why not handselect a few dream knives that you’ll use on the regular? Start with a chopping or chef’s knife, a small paring knife, a serrated bread knife and a long, thin carving knife. On your search, consider the heft and balance of the knife in your hand. Look for high-carbon stainless steel blades that can be sharpened. Recommended brands are Wusthof, Shun and Mundail. A knife block or magnetic wall holder and sharpening steel are useful add-on items.

Gifting Outside the Big Box It’s nice to think a wedding gift might hold the same potential for permanence as a marriage. In our break-andreplace society, this notion is challenging at best. However, if carefully considered, the items on your bridal registry will put you on course for building a practical and enduring domestic armory. We’re not just talking housewares. We’re talking tools for life. When considering plug-in appliances, avoid bells and whistles. The more jobs a device has, the more likely it will break.

By Amy Barnes

Try and find non-powered alternatives — like a cast iron panini press or a stovetop espresso maker — in lieu of a transitory electric contraption. A friend recently said, “You can buy it four times or you can buy it once.” While some items may be more expensive at the outset, if you’re still using it 25 or 30 years from now, you’re getting more value over the long term. Encourage friends and family to go in on gifts together if the price tag of an item is high. Here’s a list of what lasts.

Table Linens In the interest of presentation and saving the planet, you can’t go wrong with cloth napkins. Stick with cotton or linen for longevity. Avoid synthetic fabric blends. Start with a set of 12 solids of one color, or mix and match with three sets of four solids. No holiday-themed napkins, please.

Blankets Garnet Hill’s cotton fleece blankets from Germany are a quality, no-nonsense bedding basic. And they’re awesome. Washable, these blankets really do maintain their color, softness and heft over the years.

Wool Area Rug A good quality rug can be passed down through generations and grounds a room like nothing else. More durable than synthetic options, wool is a resilient and sustainable material.

Felco 8 Pruner I love my Felco pruners in a way a person shouldn’t love a gardening tool. Whether you’re pruning your weigela or cutting the stems from a floral bouquet, you’re gonna need these. With a little oil and periodic sharpening, they’ll be yours for life. Felcostore.com sells spare parts should you ever need to repair them.

Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls These are really heard to break, reasonably priced and, frankly, a kitchen is naked without them. Mixing bowls tend to come in sets but you’d rarely need more than three in varying sizes.

The Joy of Cooking Irma S. Rombauer’s cookbook holds desertisland status for me. Originally published in 1931 and most recently updated in 2006, Joy is a timeless foundation for your cookbook library.

Set of Basic Kitchen Tools

Lodge Cast Iron Skillet

My mother-in-law still uses the potato masher she received as a wedding gift 52 years ago. She’s British, and Brits like a potato, so that’s saying something. I would suggest choosing a stainless steel set with a wood handles rather than plastic, nylon or silicone. Ours came with a little rack for hanging, which frees up counter space.

The 13.25-inch size is perfect. Tended to like a family pet, ours lives on the stove always.

Pots & Pans Why not go a la carte? Fewer, better pans are a more sensible option than a big set. Select four or five appealing sizes from a high quality line like All-Clad or Calphalon. Again, avoid nonstick coatings. Stainless steel with an aluminum or copper core is best.

Nags Head Hammock

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven

There’s no better way to lounge en plein air. If the trees in your garden are too small or are not configured to support a hammock, you can get a stand that is suitably portable for your more transient life chapters. Store indoors during the winter months and you’ll be reclining happily for years to come.

These suckers are bullet-proof. Good for casseroles, stews, slow roasts; think of it as a crock pot for your oven. The best starter size for two is the 3.5-quart oval. The 5.5-quart round might prove more useful if you’re blending families. Le Creuset’s stoneware roasting pans are indispensable as well.

Not just for stir-fry, woks are great for whipping up curries, pasta sauces and soups. If seasoned and cared for properly, a good wok will last a lifetime. I would hesitate to go for the nonstick option due to scratching and toxicity concerns. Look for a wok with a sturdy metal or wood handle.

Even if you’re not a big gardener, nestle one of these on your deck and it will anchor your house with a fat splash of color. Bonus: You can take it with you when you move. A Japanese maple or other slow-growing tree for your pot would be a nice gift addition.

Cake Everything is coming together for a celebration as unique as you are, but that big, tiered, white frosted cake that is oh-so-traditional just doesn’t excite you. Consider some fun alternatives.

First question: Do you really love cake but just don’t like the size and shape of the traditional tiered one? Cupcakes might fill the bill. You can have more than one variety and frosting options include all manner of flavors, colors and artistry. Before you dismiss it as passé, visit the cases and sample the almost-too-pretty-to-eat options at Mia Bella Cupcakes. If your answer to the first question is “no,” you really don’t love cake, believing it to be merely a platform for ice cream, then go straight to the ice cream. Arcata Scoop and Living the Dream Ice Left: Pancakes by Cream will sell you their stuff by the J29 Events gallon, so you can choose your favorRight: Mia Bella ite flavors (honey lavender? Mexican Cupcakes coffee?) and create a pick-your-own toppings sundae bar. Ice cream sodas or root beer floats add an old-time flair to a summer wedding, too. Perhaps you’re a cookie person. Have a favorite that you could eat every day? Old Town Coffee and Chocolates will make cut-outs of the cookies of your choice, and also monogram them for you. French macaroons are a great option, too, if you want cookies color-coordinated with your wedding theme. You aren’t going to get elegance with doughnuts but you can really let your whimsy shine. is key. You can stack them in tiers or hang colorfully frosted ones on a pegboard to form a heart or your initials. After the wedding, repurpose the pegboard for eco points. Prefer pie? Slice of Humboldt Pie and Ferndale Pie Company both make custom pies for weddings. Slice of Humboldt Pie will make very large or petite pies with locally grown fruit and even flaky gluten-free crusts. Looking for a continental flair? Sadly, croque-en-bouche, the small cream puffs stacked into a conical tower and held together with crunchy caramel doesn’t survive Humboldt’s damp climate long. However, Cafe Brio makes cream puffs and will turn out a bevy of pastries — éclairs, tarts — for a fancy dessert table. If you both have the same favorite cheesecake, that could be your wedding cake. But if you simply can’t narrow your choice to one dessert, Ramone’s Bakery recently satisfied a couple’s wishes with a stacked cheesecake/torte/cake. And a formal affair would be only be that much more refined with the bakery’s individual crème brulees. It’s your wedding — “let them eat cake” is not the only option.

wedding guide 2017

Guests bring two bottles (one for the party and one for the couple’s bar) or bar-related gifts. The host sets up food and mixers and the newlyweds get a stocked bar. Hosting: First: Relax. The host is not expected to provide two of everything. Cover the party, and maybe provide the recipients with your list so they can recreate it later. Plan on providing a course of snacks for the guests and the essential mixers and garnishes for a working bar. Here is a shopping list for your convenience:

Mixers • • • • • • • • • • •

Garnishes

Soda water Tonic water Sodas 7-Up and/or Sprite (Yes … it matters) Cola Ginger ale Juices Orange Grapefruit Cranberry Pineapple

Building a Bar Consider what kind of bar you are going to make and for whom you are making it. A simple home bar does not need all of the things a pro might want, but if the owner is a lover of the tipple, more is better. Determining who brings what can be daunting, but will assure you don’t end up with six bottles of the same liquor or wine. You can assign things to some of your guests, make recommendations or just start a tally sheet. Here are the basics to shoot for:

• Tomato • Grenadine • Concentrated lime juice • Bitters (Angostura is fine for most drinks) • Simple syrup (You can save time and buy it or save money and make it)

Basic Spirits • “The Five White Liquors” • White rum • Vodka • Gin • Tequila (Blanco or Plata, White or Silver) • Triple Sec • Scotch • Bourbon

• • • • • • • • • •

Cocktail olives (Don’t get fancy) Cocktail onions Horseradish Tabasco Salt and pepper Sugar and artificial sweetener (Just trust me.) Fruit Cherries Lemons and Limes Ice (Get more than you think you will need.)

Feel like taking it to the next level? Try adding these liquors for advanced imbibing. • Whiskey (Canadian or Irish) • Brandy or cognac • Dark or spiced Rum • Tequila (Reposado or Anejo) • Curaçao • Vermouth • Liqueurs and aperitifs

• • • • • • • • •

Amaretto Frangelico Midori Chambord Applejack Grand Marnier Campari Akvavit Cordials

» 31

Guests: Don’t try to go too fancy when choosing your bottles. And you don’t necessarily need the most expensive brand — bring your favorite. I also recommend bringing a recipe that showcases why you love it and teach everyone how to make this masterpiece. Just remember to bring any special garnishes or additions that wouldn’t be in the average bar, say, pickled herring, for example. Not sure what to bring? Talk to the host. Have a great non-alcoholic drink recipe? That works as well. Bringing wine and beer to these events is also fine, as long as you bring two of something you love. Bar tools ( just one of each, thanks) are also fine gifts. Again, check in with your host to see what the recipients already have. Mixing tins, decanters, muddlers, drink guides, an ice bucket or wine key are always welcome, but glassware can be tricky due to variety of styles. Check the wedding gift registry first. To the happy couple! Barware and cocktail book from Plaza Arcata.
