T
his year’s lead story for the Wedding & Party Guide will be incredibly useful for the wedding couples of 2012. “To Tweet or Not To Tweet,” written by free-lancer Josephine Johnson, explores the way technology is affecting how people get married. More specifically, how these modern tools are making things easier, faster, better – and definitely more fun. We’ve been embracing new technology ourselves on the publishing side of things as well. In 2006 when we first took the expensive leap to full-color, glossy, heat-set printing – better to see the lovely photographs throughout – we also added a page-turning e-edition on our main website — www.northcoastjournal.com. (Click on “special publications.”) How does this make life easier? A bride holding this actual magazine in hand can call up – or text — her mom in Los Angeles and say, “See that deep red in the bouquet on page 37? That’s the exact color I want for the table runners.” Two years ago, we began archiving stories from past editions on-line as well in old-fashioned HTML. It’s not pretty, but it works. Why would be keep stories from years past on line? Well, each year we have a whole new batch of couples getting hitched for the very first time. Since we have been publishing this guide in one form or another for as long as we’ve been publishing the North Coast Journal – 21 years – that’s a lot of great information that is still useful. Here’s just a sampling: Last year we wrote about how to
have a green wedding in Humboldt County (a very current topic), some very cool outdoor venues you might consider that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and how to assemble a goodie bag of Humboldt products as a thank you for out-of-town guests. In 2010 we wrote about local wedding registries that go far beyond china and crystal, trends in hairstyles and accessories, and getting married on a budget. From 2009 there are stories about cakes and more cakes, how to make your own invitations, and how to personalize your wedding ceremony. From 2008: Advice from local counselors on questions you should ask yourself before marriage, when you need a wedding planner, and the magic of a gown. You get the idea. There’s a lot of information out there that you might be interested in this year that you didn’t pay any attention to three years ago – well, because you weren’t getting married then. One new website feature this year is improved access and visuals of these archived stories. We will already have the 2011 Wedding Guide on line so you can flip through that article on a green wedding just as it originally appeared with the magazine. As time allows, we will be replacing older archived stories back to page-flip format so you can access them in their original glory. As always, please let us know what you like, what works for you – and help us continue to improve this publication for next year’s crop of couples. — Judy Hodgson, Publisher

To Tweet or Not to Tweet By Josephine Johnson
O
k, maybe you’re not ready to recite your vows to one another from an ipad or tweet every behind-the-scenes wedding moment from your smart phone. but maybe you do want a website where you can post notes and photos for friends and family far away to see how gorgeous and happy you are on your big day. even if you don’t want a hashtag specifically for your wedding, digital and mobile technology can provide some nifty, time- and money-saving tricks while planning your ceremony and reception. Planning: Let the web help theknot.com, WeddingChannel.com, Weddingwire.com, mywedding.com — and other websites offer a range of services, some of which are free, others offered at a premium. theknot.com offers a budget calculator, guest list tracker, free customizable website and gift registry options. mywedding.com offers a free website with invitations to match. WeddingChannel.com boasts all the above ... and it has a range of forums where brides-to-be can chat about wedding etiquette, reception ideas, diy tips and, if necessary, brides can lend each other emotional support — in big demand and possibly short supply, especially as the big day draws nearer. perhaps the most useful service these sites provide is the ability to rsvp online. this can be a big money saver, eliminating the need to send rsvp cards and return post-
thiNKstoCK.Com
age with every invitation. of course, great, great uncle lowell out in the minnesota sticks will probably still need an rsvp sent snail mail, but for the most part the option of online rsvp not only helps keep you within budget, but also makes it easier to keep track of who’s going to be at your wedding. imagine, being able to forget all that paper and instead just focus on an internet-based, digital head count. Video, photos: Stream it, strip it so, turns out uncle lowell can’t make it to moonstone beach for the ceremony; neither can cousin Jeremy. but even in the sticks they have a decent internet connection and, with that, both can join the party via the interwebs. if you have a dv camcorder, computer with firewire input, and an internet connection, marrymelive.com is one site that can help stream your wedding and make sure your relatives — even in marble, minn. — have front rows seats as you walk along that rose petal path in the sand to the altar. another popular option is to hire a videographer to film your wedding. ok, people have been taping weddings since before super 8 film — filming a wedding is not new technology. but with digital media, wedding videographers have a whole new sleeve of tricks. a slick one is to create a docu-video of your wedding, incorporating your favorite song and including interviews with different members of the wedding party, out takes from the ceremony,
12 North Coast JourNal • WeddiNg & party guide 2012
still images and smooth narration to tie it all together. the beauty is that this mini-musicalwedding-docurama can be burned to dvd as keepsake, and you can post the video to your wedding website or send it via email to friends who weren’t able to make it. some videographers also provide a few handheld cameras just for guests to record their thoughts and well-wishes for the bride and groom. if you plan to film your wedding, ask the videographer if this is an option. it could make for some glowing, candid, likely entertaining and, no doubt, memorable moments. ah, the photo booth: like happy summer smiles and goofy faces captured at six flags or the santa Cruz boardwalk, but so much better because this photo booth is just for making memories at your wedding. thanks to digital cameras, quality portable printers and imaginative photographers, wedding photo booths have recently become a hot trend. they’re a hip way to capture the joy and spontaneity of guests sharing love, excitement, and silliness at your wedding and reception. local photographer, muir adams, offers a photo booth service as well as forget-me-Not photo. Mobile tech: About that hashtag maybe you and your sweetie were first joined by your mobile phone interactions. maybe you’re already married to social media and must have those facebook, twitter and google+ accounts linked and live. your friends are linked like this, too, in which case creating that twitter hashtag just might be a fun way to enhance and personalize your wedding experience. What’s a hashtag? When microblogging (tweeting!) hash tags (#) allow you to create a community of people interested in the same topic (your wedding) by making it easier for them to find and share information. mostly, this digital sharing is done by mobile phone. Cell phones, tweeting — yes, we know — so very, very lost on great, great uncle lowell way out there in the rural wilds. finally, there are many wedding-oriented iphone apps, too, like fun Wedding for selecting songs and Wedding flowers moodboard to help you figure out colors and types of flowers. you can also get an app counting down the hours, minutes and seconds to your wedding. all super fun stuff — and practical — if you’re often on the go and on your mobile phone. ●

She Thinks in Flowers By Josephine Johnson
F
aye Zierer thinks in flowers. and it’s no wonder. she grew up on her parents’ dows prairie flower farm, Flora organica, where as a child she experimented with bouquets, wreaths and floral centerpieces. “i was always playing, making something with flowers, finding ways to use textures and living color,” Zierer recalls. she continued playing, refining her designs and cultivating a flair for the unique. her diligence and constant experimentation is paying off — Zierer is now a standout among the North Coast’s floral designers garnering a reputation for her innovative use of unusual elements in her arrangements. tucked in among the expected dahlia, zinnia, freesia and sunflower, you might find apples, pears, a kumquat, succulents and the occasional hot pepper — all hand-tied with satin ribbon and accented with bejeweled pushpins. Zierer began Flora
organica designs in 2004 and has steadily built her business. locally, she does floral arrangements for Café Brio in arcata and for birthday, anniversary and Christmas parties. though she loves nearly all opportunities to create with flowers, weddings are her favorite. Working with brides-to-be in crafting dramatic, custom-color floral expressions for that big day is what Faye Zierer does best. Zierer begins each wedding by figuring out the flower budget. For a typical wedding — which includes bride and bridesmaid bouquets, groom and groomsmen boutonnieres, table centerpieces, altar and processional flowers — her designs range from $1,800 and $2,500. she’s worked on a few weddings with smaller budgets, though, and designed some that topped $8,000. once she has a budget, Zierer then customizes the flowers to a couple’s needs and style. “sometimes a bride will know exactly what she wants, and i work from her color scheme, brides-

Beyond That First Dance By Bob Doran
Y
ou picked the date, lined up the venue, maybe even a caterer. Time to think about music. Hiring your favorite band is one option, if they’re available and you can afford it. Or you could go the wedding DJ route. What should you look for and what should you expect? One thing you have to realize is that, in most cases, you’re not simply hiring someone to set up a sound system and play music for dancing — you are also hiring the emcee for your wedding. And in most cases, unless you are working with a wedding planner, the DJ will likely become the default onsite coordinator for your reception, responsible for directing guests what to do when and generally keeping things flowing smoothly. This is a key hire. Beyond finding someone to play music you like and get people dancing, you want professionalism and experience. DJ Mario Aguero of Live Sound Co. definitely has experience – he’s been DJing at weddings since 1977. In the busy season he’ll do a wedding almost every weekend, sometime two or three. He says, first and foremost, his role is to “provide whatever the customer wants, whatever style they want,” not just in music but in presentation, be it casual or formal. He sees his gift — and his art — as being able to read a crowd and sense what will get them moving. He says, “My biggest reward is seeing the people dance. I want to take it to a point where people take their walls down so they forget about life and just enjoy the moment.” Pete Myer fell into the biz about 20 years ago through his radio DJ gig for KFMI where he was getting calls asking about wedding DJs. He figured it would be easy, “Play some Motown, makes some announcements …” but soon realized there was a lot more to it. “You run the show a lot of the time. You guide things like when the toast will happen, tell people when the food is ready, when it’s time to cut the cake,” and that all important first dance. He offers song suggestions on his website and sends out a questionnaire asking
about music “for the special moments.” Once things get going, he says, “I play a wide variety of music from the classics to the new stuff. You have to pick and choose what will work with the crowd. It can get tricky, particularly for a young couple who want a certain kind of music that may not work for the parents and the older people there.” Myers feels that he’s found his weekend niche as a wedding DJ, concluding, “It’s wonderful to see the love that goes around — it’s a special thing.” For Ben Herman, aka “DJ MuziqLement” of Accurate Productions Inc., weddings are one component of a business based on “professionalism and reliability.” Herman started DJing in 2004 while still a student at McKinleyville High. He has since assembled a crew of 10 DJs who supply music for nightclubs, special events and, of course, plenty of weddings. From the start he took his cues from corporate leaders like Ray Kroc of McDonald’s. “Everywhere there’s an Accurate DJ, they’ll be dressed the same, working DJ Mario Aguero of Live Sound Co. has been DJ-ing with the same quality equipment,” he at weddings since 1977. Photo by Eyelight Photography explains. “We have a uniform dress code: black suits with a white pressed shirt Chris Grossman, aka Itchie Fingaz. Both DJs and a blue tie. A lot of the wedding planners prefer Serato turntable systems, digital “record have told us we’re the sharpest dressed DJs in players” that allows DJ to mix MP3s as if they Humboldt.” were records and avoid hauling around crates Using the Accurate Productions website a of vinyl. prospective bride and groom can choose from Itchie admits that the emcee duties are not an extensive music database and plan their his favorite part of wedding work. “I usually own playlist. What works best? “Classic rock try not to get on the mic too much; I just play and disco are favorites because the younger music,” he says. “That’s my focus, mixing the generation is familiar with them as well as the music and getting people dancing. older folks,” says Herman. “I love playing weddings,” he adds. “You Got a favorite club DJ? Pretty much every have family, friends, people of all ages, all one you’ll hear in a local bar is also available for happy together, and I get to play all kinds of weddings and it’s easy to see them in action music, all genres mixed together. It’s just a ahead of time. If you’re looking for reggae great party.” you may want Dan “Dub Cowboy” Giannotta, Of course that’s just a sample of what’s one of two DJs chosen by Journal readers last available locally. Make some calls — and year as “Best Club DJ” in Humboldt. (Giannotta choose wisely. DJ Mario put it succinctly: “Not also spins Top 40 and hip hop as Mixmaster all DJs are the same. You have to find the one Krushington.) He shared the “Best” title with who meets your needs.” l North Coast Journal • Wedding & party Guide 2012

About Those Memories ... By Terrence McNally

ew industries trade on client emotions like the wedding industry. It is the most important day of your life, brides are told by industry professionals. Don’t let any detail go without a commitment to perfection. That’s quite a bit of baggage for someone balancing so many considerations — spiraling costs, the expectations of two families merging, as well the knowledge that one’s closest friends are traveling from near and far for your big party. But after all the guests go home and the

dirty plates packed up, what’s does a couple have left? Those memories. And this is generally where wedding photographers come in with the pitch. You might not recall the nuances of the tapenade crostinis or how hard you labored over the shade of the ties worn by the groomsmen. But you will have those memories captured forever with good photographer. The challenge for most couples is asking the right questions before choosing a wedding photographer. There are guides online and in wedding magazines. However, a lot of the

advice is distracting and will do little to connect you with your “right” photographer. “Don’t bring the checklist!” said Joni Schrantz, a former Humboldt photographer who now works in Denver. She’s referring to “the list” found in many magazines tabulating day-of, photo-worthy events. While these can be helpful for the bride — kind of cliff notes for the big day’s stages — a pro is already familiar with a wedding’s key events. “Your photographer doesn’t need to be told to shoot you walking down the aisle and the first kiss,” she added. Well, fine. Forget about what you shouldn’t be asking. A professional won’t be offended by any questions you come up with anyway. But here are a few things that brides are not asking photographers — but really should: • How many weddings have you photographed? Seems pretty simple, but it is the easiest way to gauge a photographer’s level of experience. More rodeos, tougher cowboy — at least

Humboldt’s photographers can help you gather a lifetime of memories, from engagement photos (above right), to wedding portraits (left and right), and family portraits (far right).
one who will be able to wrangle problems when they arise. If your budget doesn’t allow for a more experienced photographer, there’s obviously nothing wrong with that. But it’s good to discuss contingency plans with your newbie shooter. • Do you work with a second photographer? This will necessitate a higher cost, but can certainly be worth it if you don’t to want to miss a thing. • Do you charge tax? Really? What an odd question, but if your photographer is not charging sales tax, it means that he or she is probably skirting state law. That might be fine to you, but it’s also a good indication of a photographer’s level

of devotion to their career. Someone who hasn’t bothered to file for a federal EIN number is probably not going to be around in a couple years. • Do you carry liability insurance? Many local photographers don’t. Can you imagine your big day being caught up in legal wrangles for months following, or incurring an additional expense of a lawsuit? It’s a rarity, but once in a while someone is injured during photography sessions. Uncle Al takes a tumble during a portrait or a little kid gets tangled in a 1600-watt lighting system. • How do you archive? The immediate answer should be both on site (in the studio) and off. A professional photographer should be in it for the long haul. And they should be prepared well into the future — 10, 20, 30 years — to be able to provide clients backups should prints or files be destroyed.
• Can I see more? Obviously, photographers put their best work out for display. But you’re probably seeing a mere 1 percent of their work. Are they willing and able to show you an entire day’s images? • Do I like you? This is where you can drop the checklist and let your heart guide the way. In the end, Humboldt County offers a number of excellent wedding photographers. They are pros. If a photographer’s credentials are up to snuff and you’re digging their style, ask yourself if this is someone you want to spend lots of time with — because you will. There are the weeks and months before and after the event communicating, maybe even an engagement portrait session. And then, of course, the entire day of the wedding. And if all goes well, you may just build a relationship with a person who ends up photographing maternity portraits, a newborn, family gatherings and high school senior portraits — helping you keep your memories for a lifetime. l
