IT’S TRADITION I always thought I wasn’t a “traditional wedding person.” When it came to my own wedding, I didn’t go with the white dress, walking down an aisle or the enormous cake. But after putting together this issue of the Wedding Guide, maybe I am. That is, maybe I love the traditions we set for ourselves — my good-luck, second-hand dress and Claddagh necklace, and the tiramisu we gorged on after. Open your mind to inventing new traditions (and picking up some old ones) while perusing Amy Barnes’ round-up of wedding practices from around the world. The Roman practice of throwing nuts at your old suitors certainly speaks to a few of us. And if you’re thinking about wearing your mother’s gown but the fit is a challenge, take a look at Nora Mounce’s piece on making a vintage dress work with the right seamstress or tailor. And while you’re waffling between hiring a band or a DJ, consider how a solo musician might work for an intimate gathering. Sam Armanino gets

to know local singer and songwriter Michael Dayvid, who’ll play a jazz standard for your first dance and switch to Prince when it’s time to get down. Of course, if you’re going for epic, you might flip to our story on Lost Coast Ranch, a new venue in Ferndale with breathtaking seaside views and Humboldt charm. Depending on the time of year, you might even get a whale or two at your wedding. And we’ve got plenty of photos from local photographers to browse through as you narrow down your choices. You’ll also get a look at what a group of local wedding-related vendors can do when they put their heads together on everything from tents to table settings. Dog-ear some pages, circle things, cross others out, stick on some Postits and fill the margins with notes. And when you’re done, we’re betting you’ll have an idea of which traditions you’re ready to follow, scrap or invent all on your own. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

Wedding Taking the plunge at Lost Coast Ranch

with a

View

By Nora Mounce Photos courtesy of Lost Coast Ranch

With its pastoral vistas and old-timey charm, happy couples wanting to get hitched have been flocking to Ferndale for years. Several colorful and rambling Victorians operate as bucolic bed and breakfasts, offering the ideal location for an intimate wedding or romantic getaway. But another treasure of the Eel River Valley lies beyond the charming townscape. Go west on Centerville Road and you’ll soon be immersed in the stunning agricultural landscape that is truly Ferndale’s heritage. Driving past cows idly grazing around century old farmhouses, suddenly the Pacific Ocean appears

dead ahead, crashing wildly to shore at Centerville Beach. Practically close enough to dip your toe in the seawater, the slim road traverses across the beach before steeply crawling up into the green hills. Drive another 2.6 miles through the rugged terrain and you’ll arrive at Humboldt County’s newest wedding venue, a destination worthy of the greatest romance — the Lost Coast Ranch. “I couldn’t have found a more beautiful and exquisite place,” says Cindy Olsen-Bugenig, a Loleta resident and the first bride to say “I do” at the ranch last summer. local and active in the community, Olsen-Bugenig and her husband, Clare Bugenig, struggled to keep their guest list under 200. Seeking a rural locale that reflected their agricultural values, the couple had been hunting for a wedding venue for more than two years. On their first drive to the Ranch, OlsenBugenig said to her husband, “I know this is it.” And it was. On a June summer’s night, the couple married on the grassy bluff perched over the Pacific, with breaching whales blowing seawater in view of the newlyweds. Then the couple danced the night away with 175 of their dearest family and friends. “We are located away from all distractions, so you can focus on what matters, family and loved ones,” says Seta Mesrobian, who operates Lost Coast Ranch with her husband, Harry Boyajian. The ranch consists of 108 acres of rolling pastureland and an expansive ranch house, offering panoramic views of the Pacific from the kitchen, wraparound decks and most of the 18 bedrooms. Boyajian has added on substantially to the structure, which was originally built in 1982, building a formal dining room and commercial kitchen with floor-to-ceiling windows, an industrial mixer, espresso bar and wood-fired oven. Whether wedding parties book the ranch for an evening ceremony or the entire weekend, it’s their private oasis during the event. Wedding guests staying overnight can choose from 16 uniquely decorated rooms, each with a full private bathroom. The formal living room is filled with regal, high-backed armchairs, fit

for a ship captain’s quarters, anchored by a massive fireplace and flanked by an equally spacious sitting room. Overall, the ranch has no shortage of cozy hideaways to catch a moment of solitude or enjoy a nightcap. There’s even decent cell service. The heart of the ranch, the kitchen, overlooks the aquamarine expanse of the Lost Coast, appearing ready to host a North Coast edition of Iron Chef at a moment’s notice. On the big day, couples can choose their own professional caterers or Boyajian and Mesrobian are happy to provide their own culinary team. The couple also owns and operates the historic Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale, where they honed their hospitality chops and learned to appreciate the special madness of the wedding business. “Very few places offer such a closeness with nature, while enjoying all the comfort and amenities offered at the Ranch,” explains Mesrobian. If a couple books the entire weekend, there’s no shortage of activities to keep out-oftown guests entertained: Centerville Beach, where the brave can feel the ocean spray sting their faces and the wise can enjoy a picnic, is less than 3 miles away. Another 10 minutes drive away, the hive of culture, shopping and dining in downtown Ferndale beckons, in addition to offering extra lodging for wedding guests. Back on the ranch, miles upon miles of private hiking trails are waiting to be explored by birders, hikers and anyone craving nature therapy. Just ask and Boyajian will draw you a personal map. 15

Vintage Restoration Making a second-hand wedding dress fit By Nora Mounce Right now, I know half a dozen couples planning nuptials behind the Redwood Curtain in 2018, with varying degrees of determination and exactitude. Peeking in from the friendship sidelines, I’m reminded of the Sasquatch-sized behemoth that is planning a wedding. No less than a jillion moving parts must synchronize on the big day and, unfortunately, most have a serious price tag. What to do? Trim the guest list and risk a lifetime of awkward family gatherings? Follow a YouTube tutorial to style your hair? No way. Never. But one quite palatable and stylish suggestion caught our attention: buying a second-hand wedding dress. In a 2016

survey, The Knot found that American brides spend an average of $1,564 on a wedding dress. Given the potential savings and our community’s longstanding appreciation for eco-fashion, we think a second-hand wedding dress is a natural fit for many a Humboldt bride. Here’s a detailed survival guide to shopping for “the one” — and remember, we’re talking about the dress here.

After getting engaged in 2015, Caterina Kein received a surprise early wedding gift while visiting her family on the East Coast. Eight years earlier, Kein’s mother had been flicking through the hangers in a Boston area Salvation Army when she came across a gorgeous vintage Gunne Sax, a brand adored by chic women of the 1960s. Knowing her daughter would get married someday, she bought the dress and kept it a secret until Kein came home with the happy news. Despite the rarity of finding a beautiful and well-preserved Gunne Sax, there was one pesky problem with Kein’s dress — it was size miniature. Luckily, Kein had a secret weapon back in Arcata: talented seamstress Jennifer Harris, who owns the women’s clothing boutique Angelica Atelier. Over several months and many fitting appointments, Harris tailored the dress to fit Kein perfectly, in addition to lifting the yellow cast from the dress using her special baking soda wash method and repurposing the »

delicate lace sleeves into back straps. Harris calls her special art form “vintage restoration.” For Kein, the price tag for her custom Gunne Sax was $350, an incredible value for a dress she considers priceless. “Local farm, local food, local clothing — that’s what my husband and I stand for. It was a very Humboldt wedding,” says Kein. Emilee Quackenbush described the theme of her 2015 wedding as “Victorian garden party meets Fried Green Tomatoes.” Over her yearlong engagement, she lazily looked around town for a dress but “nothing resonated.” After hearing that Little Shop of Hers had recently received several old dresses, Quackenbush hustled in and immediately found “the one” for the romantic price of $75. Though trying on the perfect dress felt like magic, Quackenbush still needed Harris to sprinkle her pixie dust. Custom alterations on the antique lace gown ran a cool $200 and Harris also altered the vest and slacks worn by Emilee’s wife, Lauren. The Quackenbushes, who run an organic flower farm on the Mad River, look forward to someday passing on the heirloom dress to their daughter, Marigold. Of the dozen-plus thrift and consignment stores scattered across Arcata, Eureka and surrounds, most report stocking at least a few wedding gowns. Consignment shop Couture Design, which recently relocated to Old Town Eureka from Ferndale, leads with an impressive selection of nearly

two dozen wedding gowns, priced from $20 to $1,000, some of which have never been worn. And if you’re not planning to keep your gown, you might be able to sell it on consignment after the wedding. Little Shop of Hers specializes in dresses with a Mid-Century flair and A Plus For You typically has at least a few on the rack, as does Shipwreck. The Clothing Dock has a smattering of official wedding gowns, priced from $50 to $250, but reports that many local brides find other dresses that work beautifully for creatively themed weddings. Game of Thrones, anyone? While unpredictable vintage sizes can make second-hand shopping a challenge, some are lucky enough to “find” a wedding dress in their grandmother’s closet. It can be daunting to transform a family heirloom into functional fashion, but Harris says there’s always an odd piece of lace or tulle that can be incorporated into your “vintage restoration.” Other brides might consider shopping on Ebay and having Humboldt’s talented pool of seamstresses perfect the gown (regardless of size, most brides need a little something hemmed or let out). Humboldt brides also recommended Lilette’s Alterations and Tailor Made in Eureka, Stitches-N-Britches in McKinleyville and Sew What in Arcata. While hunting for “the one,” don’t overlook Humboldt’s many eclectic thrift and consignment shops — you might find “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” in one fabulous dress. 21

Right Tenor Musician Michael Dayvid

By Sam Armanino Photographs by The Rasers Photography Illustrations by Jacqueline Langeland

A wedding comes to life with music. On the big day, your song can make the moment or get the party started, but it doesn’t have to break the bank or — for a smaller wedding — take up the whole room. Hiring a solo musician can be a relatively economical, logistically simple and aesthetically versatile choice. »

wedding guide 2018

A

rcatabased musician Michael Dayvid, a cheerful and soft spoken 27-year-old from Southern California, has been performing at weddings in Humboldt County for the past five years. “Having a solo acoustic musician can bring something more intimate and, I think, heartfelt,” said Dayvid as he sat in Eureka’s Wine Spot a few hours before he was scheduled to play during Arts Alive. Small groups of people were already waiting patiently for Dayvid to pick up his guitar and take his usual corner in the room. Dayvid’s repertoire is broad, encompassing Top 40, jazz standards and originals alike. The Wine Spot gig that evening went for hours, with patrons passing around a binder full of some 200 songs that ranged from classic pop covers of Talking Heads to delicate folk songs of Fleet Foxes. Smiles, laughter and song filled the space. And when he’s booked for a wedding, if the couple manage to stump him with two or three requested songs, he’ll learn them. He said there’s more room to grow in a repertoire when you play solo than there is for full bands. “They just send me an email and I’ll learn it and be ready to perform it the day of,” Dayvid said. Once, he said, a bride’s mother requested that he learn 25 jazz songs. “I learned 20 plus songs for that event,” Dayvid said. That wedding sparked one of his only rules, which is a limit of two to three new songs, though he’ll learn four or five for an additional fee. “I still play all of those songs that I learned for that one event. Some of them even became staples,” he said, adding that jazz became one of his favorite things to play at weddings. Like a lot of people who find themselves along the North Coast, Dayvid said he followed his love to Humboldt State University six years ago. After marrying, he worked his way into the music scene gigging at bars around the county,

which paved the way to performing at weddings. Most of the couples who’ve booked him have seen him play during his regular performances in Arcata or Eureka, or else they’ve heard him at another wedding. Typically, that means playing guitar. “It tends to set the right mood because I can ramp up the energy and play dancing music, or I could do a really quiet intimate piece,” Dayvid said. His latest solo wedding performance was at the Lost Whale Inn, which Dayvid said is among his favorite places to play for a wedding because of the ocean view. Although he mostly plays guitar, Dayvid said he had the opportunity to have some fun with the inn’s piano during a dinner toast. Depending on how large the audience is, Dayvid might bring a single amplifier that can be set up with little space, which is good news for an intimate wedding. Dayvid said his “sweet spot” to play is about 30 to 40 audience members, which lets him play loud enough without being overbearing. “One thing I make sure to say to everyone I play for is ‘thank you so much for including me in this part of your life, on this day.’ I think foremost, it’s an honor to be able to help people build that perfect setting for their wedding,” Dayvid said. “When my wife and I were planning our wedding, we put all this forethought and all this planning, and all this emotional energy into getting everything just the way we wanted it. And so, for me, it's an honor to be selected.” 25

Stone House Wishing you a casă de piatră By Amy Barnes

For centuries, wedding traditions have been borrowed from across cultural lines to ensure luck, happiness, fertility and fortitude. Most wedding customs Americans hold dear are rituals that in fact come from somewhere else. The tradition of a bride wearing something old, new, borrowed and blue stems from Victorian English times. The classic American wedding cake originates from ancient Rome, where they used to break a loaf of bread over the bride’s head to enhance fertility. Attaching tin cans to the wedding car is a French folk custom. Wearing a wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand stems from an Egyptian belief that the vein in that hand led straight to the heart. Bridal bouquets originally consisted of herbs like rosemary, dill and garlic to ward off evil spirits and bad smells in 15th century Europe. We’re fortunate to live in a time where we can tailor our weddings to suit ourselves, our budgets, our fam-

ilies and our stories. My mom walked me down the aisle. My British mother-in-law arrived with a myrtle branch to tuck into my bouquet for love and offered a sixpence coin to wear in my shoe for luck. The lyrics to a John Lennon song are engraved in our wedding rings. A potter friend made a porcelain goblet from which we sipped during the ceremony. This sharing of the symbolic “cup of life” is a ritual that hails back to ancient Greece. Wedding traditions contribute to the rich weft and weave of modern global life. Your wedding provides the perfect opportunity to recognize ancestral roots, honor family customs and even speak to meaningful places you’ve traveled to. From the bridal shower to the honeymoon, consider incorporating a few nonstandard twists that celebrate your heritage and life experience. For inspiration, here are a few intriguing wedding traditions from around the globe. »

In Mexico, a bride will stitch three ribbons of yellow, blue and red into her underthings; symbolizing her hope for food, money and passion in the future.

27

For centuries, bagpipes have played an important role in traditional Scottish weddings — both before and after the ceremony. For luck, Scots tuck a bit of white heather into the bride’s bouquet and the groom’s buttonhole. And, of course, kilts all around for the menfolk.

Hand-fasting is an ancient Celtic ritual where a couple’s hands are bound together with braided cord or ribbon to symbolize the joining of two lives and their connection to one another. It is believed that the notion of “tying the knot” is derived from this tradition.

Planting a pine tree in the newlywed’s garden is a Dutch tradition symbolizing luck and fertility. Symbolizing good fortune and fertility, green — not blue — is the lucky nuptial color in Italy.

In Morocco, the bride luxuriates in a milk bath on the eve of her wedding day.

In Roman times custom was for brides to hurl nuts at rejected suitors on her way out of the church.

The geographical origin of jumping of the broom is hotly debated and is said to have roots in the Ghanaian region of West Africa as well as the Romani people in Wales and England and the slaves of the American South. The broom is a symbol of the hearth and “jumping the broom” symbolizes the sweeping away of the past and embracing a new life.

In Austria, it is tradition for the bride to be woken by fireworks at dawn on her wedding day.

The night before the ceremony, wedding guests in Germany smash china dishes on the ground to ward off evil spirits. The newlyweds-to-be clean up the mess, signifying how they’ll work together through future challenges.

In Greek tradition, guests pin money to the bride's dress instead of bringing gifts.

28

wedding guide 2018

Polish parents welcome the married couple to the reception with bread (for prosperity) and salt (for the strength to withstand the hardships of life). Also, vodka.

Romanian wedding guests wish the bride and groom “Casă de piatră,” which means “stone house” symbolizing a solid marriage that can withstand life’s many trials. Romanians also go for a bit of chicken dancing and bride kidnapping during wedding celebrations.

It is customary for Mongolian couples to hold a knife and together slay a young chicken with the hopes of finding a healthy liver prior to marriage.

In Pakistan, weddings involve four separate ceremonies that unfold over the course of four days. Pakistani brides wear a dress the color of her choosing. Chinese brides change dresses three times over the course of their wedding day.

In India, a bride’s women friends and family gather the night before the wedding and adorn her hands and arms, legs and feet with intricate henna designs to bring good luck and happiness.

The Massai people of Kenya have a tradition of the bride being spat upon by her father following the ceremony; a gesture symbolizing both good luck and good fortune.

Humboldt brides will be particularly relieved to learn that in Hindu tradition, wet weather on your wedding day is considered to be lucky. Symbolizing cleansing, abundance, fertility and renewal, rain portends a strong marriage — the thinking is, a wet knot is harder to untie!

Filipino newlyweds release a pair of white doves into the air during the reception as a sign of eternal love and a harmonious marriage.
