from thepublishers When picture day falls on a rainy Sunday, we set up on the front porch. And sometimes the photographer insists on keeping his orange and blue plaid pajamas on. They match his shoes, which had been AWOL for a few days. A parent does not experience true holy terror until his child’s favorite shoes go missing. Even Peyton loves her brother’s shoes. She wears them when he’s not looking. This isn’t the first time Adam was separated from his trademark orange crocs. Last year, he was riding with me in the Jeep and threw them out the window somewhere along Route 151. A kind soul who saw them on the road left them on a newspaper rack at Ashley’s Market, where I had stopped by later. We love where we live. But miracles like that are rare. We ended up getting end-of-season clearance replacements and were convinced a possum was trying on a pair of orange shoes somewhere along Ennis Mountain Road, which is where we think Tommy and Adam were when the shoes left our possession. Adam’s silence when confronted about his missing shoes was proof, we thought, that he had done something naughty.

So you could imagine our surprise when walking in the yard a few days later, we saw those orange things sitting outside the dog shed, where Adam has been known to crawl through a dusty opening and play. You let your child play by himself outside?! Truth be known, we do. But we are always close by. Kids need to lose themselves in mischief and adventure. Some of my fondest memories are of playing outside with friends knowing our parents had no clue what we were doing. Walk a mile in a little boy’s shoes. There’s a good chance you’ll see them on the road soon again. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Sweet September Hamlet speaks of “thoughts beyond the reaches of our souls.” I understand this as there often come moments during the month of September when I’ll recall, not with volitive thought or conscious mind but viscerally from somewhere deep within, the anxious ache of back to school; of new lunchboxes, dresses and shoes; of turning leaves and shorter days. The experience of fall, interlaced with summer’s end, stirs my memory perhaps more than any other season, evoking emotions that drop into present a taste of the past. On the French Riviera September quickly became my favorite month. Tourists trickled away leaving beaches empty, yet the water remained warm from months of summer sun. And the light….that shortened light which would caste its glow over the beach, creating shadows in the dips and hollows of the sand. In Paris, too, September was a favorite month. La Rentrée it’s called, ‘the return’ when families returned from ‘vacances’ and students returned to school. The city’s air had a welcome nip, stores

and restaurants reopened and there was vibrancy and excitement in the streets. In Virginia September is also a favorite month…with days of brilliant clarity and warmth yet that delicious hint of fall we all await. And down at the shore, the water’s still warm and the tourists are fleeing. And so… beach wines, back to school wines, whatever your preference, raise a glass and enjoy these poignant days that will never return to us again in quite the same way…except perhaps in memory. A few wines worthy of September’s exceptional grace: Domaine Berthelemot, Pommard, Noizons, 2009 – Since September heralds fall, red drinkers rejoice. Yet, still warm, early September calls for lighter reds. I love good Burgundy more than any other wine, but so many Burgundies are hugely expensive and don’t seem to deliver. I’ve found recent vintages of Pommard particularly difficult, but here is an exception that offers everything a great Burgundy should. With smoky

notes, a touch of cherry and real Côte de Beaune terroir, this wine is silky elegance. $51 Beronia, Rioja, reserva, 2006 – Moving through the month to an evening cookout on the grill with sweaters on! (you, not the grill that is)…and it’s time to pull out the Rioja, reserva. Look for a complex bouquet of coffee, vanilla, leather and cloves. Smooth texture on the palate with notes of black cherry, orange peel and oak. $21 Château La Calisse, rosé, 2011 - For diehard summer fans gripping fast to the last long, carefree evenings, here’s a rosé with which to hold onto the illusion of summertime. Since summer encourages that slowed-down pace of life, take a deep breath then sip a chilled glass of La Calisse and pretend a little. It starts with a log. And in the town Jens Müller grew up, there were plenty of them. Somplar, Germany. Population: 400 or so. “It was set kind of like Nelson in the country; woods everywhere and fields and farms,” said Jens of his hometown, a German city about an hour and a half north of Frankfurt. “I always grew up in the country.” As a child in Somplar, Jens grew up playing in the woods, building forts and tree houses. So when he was 15 and had to choose what field to go into after finishing school, carpentry was an easy choice. “I like the feel of it,” said Jens. “I like to create things; it’s fun to go out and make something new every day. It’s kind of an art. The possibilities are endless of what you can do.” These days, Jens lives in Schuyler with his wife, Catherine (who he met in Ohio while volunteering there in the late 1990s) and their 8-year-old son, Wyatt. From their property, Jens runs Old World Carpentry, which specializes in historic renovations, special

doesn’t always see in other second graders – Wyatt knows how things work and how things come together. He can use a hammer and nail. “It’s kind of cool to see that develop,” said Jens. “And maybe someday if he still enjoys it he can work with me.” Together, Wyatt and Jens have been using the best of German engineering to work on their projects this summer. In addition to the German flag on his tractor (Note that he is wearing adidas. That’s German, too.), Jens said he often wears the traditional German carpentry attire. He said that in Germany, every trade has its own type of clothing. “You see people in their clothing and you can see what kind of trade they’re in. Carpenters usually wear corduroy boot cut pants and the belt with the carpentry symbol,” he said – not to mention the hammer holder is a lion’s head with a chain on it and the double button vest and jacket. “I got trained in Germany, so I’m trying to incorporate the knowledge I have with the tradition that goes on over there in Germany,” said Jens. “I try to bring it over here and try to set myself apart from your other carpenters and companies my size.” NCL

pieces for residential homeowners, as well as custom cabinetry, garden structures, and all these years later he’s still got those tree houses going. “So, it’s kind of like I do anything with wood,” said Jens, but he prefers renovating the very old or creating something completely new. “I don’t like to build a new house; it’s not very interesting to me. There’s nothing there – you just nail 2x4s together. I rather work with what you already have; have something there. The more of a challenge, the more I like it. If no one else can come up with an idea, I will.” Jens’ son Wyatt is also into the old – at the ripe old age of 8, he’s decided that he wants to be an archeologist. “He likes many things,” said Wyatt’s dad. “I’m not going to force him into anything so he can pretty much do whatever he wants.” Since Wyatt was three years old, he’s been traveling to job sites with his dad. This summer during the weeks he doesn’t feel like heading to camp, he’s been spending more time with dad. “He just helps loading wood, he pushes the button on the sawmill, helps steer the tractor,” said Jens. “I think he kid of enjoys it, being outside and doing something.” Jens said that he can see in Wyatt things he

Here it is, the first of September and the kids have been back in class for over a week already. Seems like the start of school gets earlier and earlier each successive year. When I was growing up the start of the school year never began until after Labor Day, around September 7th. Of course, Florida never had snow days to calculate in, either, so our beginning and ending dates were pretty much always the same. Looking back over nearly the half-century that I’ve been out of school (how can that be possible?), so much has changed. Take, for instance, the dress code … or lack of one. I read in the paper that one of the local city schools has now completely done away with any type of dress code for their students. I swore to my parents that I would NEVER say, “why back in my day”… but here I am, say-

New Hours: ing, back in my day kids had to wear nice Sunday clothes to school; skirts and blouses or dresses for the girls and dress pants and a nice shirt for the boys (which included a belt and socks). A boy in my junior class was sent home one day because he came to school wearing loafers without any socks. I’m not sure if he didn’t have a clean pair or he was just making a statement. Whatever the reason, he got ousted and was awarded a three-day after school detention held in the girl’s Home Ec Class. We also didn’t have to carry the huge load of books and other paraphernalia that today’s kids have to lug around in backpacks. I see little children coming out of school, bent over with the weight of heavy books on their backs. At this rate, we are going to have a whole generation of humpback adults in years to come. I remember carrying two or three books in my arms from the bus stop to my house a few times a week but that was the extent of it. And if we finished our homework at the end of class or in study hall, we didn’t have to bring any books home at all. School was also a place of safety, with perhaps the exception of Senior Prank Day, which was always full of surprises. About the only illicit things that locker checks showed up was the forbidden pack of Black Jack or Teaberry chewing gum or the worst case scenario … a pack of Camel cigarettes somebody stashed under their gym shorts. For this latter infraction, one faced suspension. Even in the mid 1960s, drugs weren’t a problem in schools like they are now. Bringing handguns and knives onto school property was unheard of, much less using them to gun down fellow students and teachers. There weren’t any SATs or SOLs back then either. You either got it or you didn’t … meaning if your grades were good enough at the end of the year, you passed to the next grade or if they weren’t, you had to repeat the same grade over. This looming threat made most of us buckle down and study hard enough to get at least an average C in our subjects. The thrill of the new school year was seeing if our best friends had any classes with us or if we got the preferred teacher, as opposed to “The Old Hag” in Science 101. And we had to make the supreme decision of whether to go to the trouble of packing our lunch or chance buying it, suffering through another day of fish sticks, stewed tomatoes and turkey surprise that the cafeteria ladies handed out. Some things never change, even fifty years later! NCL

It’s Harvest Time! Are you prepared for the changes ahead?

Harvest Time There is much speculation about what will happen to the tax rules and the federal budget in January. Many significant tax provisions expire – including the “Bush Tax Cuts”. The legacy of the current Congress is inaction. At any time that an important decision has loomed, they have found a way to kick the can down the road and defer the decision that will ultimately have to be made. We know, of course, that nothing of substance will happen before Election Day; following which they will be so weary from their hard work that they will have to recess for Thanksgiving Holiday. So that leaves a few weeks in December for any action to occur. I put my money on the horse that continues the status quo and leaves most of the current tax and budget provisions in place for another year. This lack of direction is precisely what continues to stall the economy. Business leaders cannot make decisions without knowledge of

the future tax and economic implications, so they are not investing in new capital items or additional employees. It is equally hard for smaller businesses and individuals to plan. Lacking direction, it is time to do what every good squirrel does in September: harvest your nuts and squirrel them away. We don’t know what the tax rates will be next year or in the future. But, they will not go down and they will likely go up – particularly on investment income. If you have an opportunity to realize income in 2012 rather than in the future – do it. If you have appreciated stocks, consider harvesting the gains and moving the funds to cash or less risky investments. If you are over age 59 ½, you may be eligible to withdraw funds from certain retirement accounts without penalty. Or, you might consider converting some of those funds to a Roth IRA. If your assets are adequate to fund your retirement years, you should

be gifting assets to your heirs. The tax rates and exemptions on estates and gifts will never be lower. (The gifting rules are complex, and you should consult with your tax advisor or estate attorney prior to taking any action.) Of course, I may very well be wrong in my prediction that Congress will continue the status quo for another year. If so, some or all of the Bush Tax Cuts will expire and the mandated federal budget cuts will occur on January 1st. If you have been a good squirrel during the fall harvest season, you will be better positioned for this scenario. Regardless of your guess as to what Congress will do or not do in December, it is time to harvest your gains and carefully store what you have. By the time Congress has taken action, it will be too late for the rest of us to take protective action. The fall markets will be rocky at best; now is the time to schedule a meeting with your tax or financial advisor.

3.8% Real Estate Tax; True or False?

Rumor and fear is circulating about a 3.8% tax on future real estate transactions; there is no new tax on the sale of every home! Here is a summary of the Medicare tax on investment income and capital gains as prepared directly by the National Association of Realtors. 1. When you add up all of your income from every possible source, and that total is less than $200,000 ($250,000 on a joint tax return), you will NOT be subject to this tax. 2. The 3.8% tax will NEVER be collected as a transfer tax on real estate of any type, so you’ll NEVER pay this tax at the time that you purchase a home or other investment property. 3. You’ll NEVER pay this tax at settlement when you sell your home or investment property. Any capital gain you realize at settlement is just one component of that year’s gross income.

4. If you sell your principal residence, you will still receive the full benefit of the $250,000 (single tax return)/$500,000 (married filing joint tax return) exclusion on the sale of that home. If your capital gain is greater than these amounts, then you will include any gain above these amounts as income on your Form 1040 tax return. Even then, if your total income (including this taxable portion of gain on your residence) is less than the $200,000/$250,000 amounts, you will NOT pay this tax. If your total income is more than these amounts, a formula will protect some portion of your investment. 5. The tax applies to other types of investment income, not just real estate. If your income is more than the $200,000/$250,000 amount, then the tax formula will be applied to capital gains, interest income, dividend income and net rents (i.e., rents after expenses).

6. The tax goes into effect in 2013. If you have investment income in 2013, you won’t pay the 3.8% tax until you file your 2013 Form 1040 tax return in 2014. The 3.8% tax for any later year will be paid in the following calendar year when the tax returns are filed. 7. In any particular year, if you have NO income from capital gains, rents, interest or dividends, you’ll NEVER pay this tax, even if you have millions of dollars of other types of income. 8. The formula that determines the amount of 3.8% tax due will ALWAYS protect $200,000 ($250,000 on a joint return) of your income from any burden of the 3.8% tax. For example, if you are single and have a total of $201,000 income, the 3.8% tax would NEVER be imposed on more than $1000. 9. It’s true that investment income from rents on an invest-

ment property could be subject to the 3.8% tax. BUT: The only rental income that would be included in your gross income and therefore possibly subject to the tax is net rental income: gross rents minus expenses like depreciation, interest, property tax, maintenance and utilities. 10. The tax was enacted along with the health care legislation in 2010. It was added to the package just hours before the final vote and without review. NAR strongly opposed the tax at the time, and remains hopeful that it will not go into effect. The tax will no doubt be debated during the upcoming tax reform debates in 2013. Tree Training 101 A client recently asked me to aid in training a multi-trunk Crape Myrtle near her home. When I looked at the tree and its branching habit, it was obvious that mistakes had been made both at the nursery and probably since it was installed. The easiest tree training process starts with buying a suitable specimen then progresses to what you do as the tree grows – and like so many things in life, the more you do early, the better the rewards are later. Corrective pruning is much more costly to both you and the tree since it opens large wounds and requires larger cutting tools (chain saws at times). Therefore if you train early, all cuts can be done with a pair of Felco hand pruners – almost … First and foremost, choose a suitable tree that has a canopy that you can work with. There are 2 main types to choose from; multi-trunk (i.e. Crape Myrtle) and single trunk (i.e. Oak). When purchasing a multi-trunk, always think ‘the more, the merrier’ and buy more trunks as you can always completely remove one trunk later if needed. On crape Myrtle and the like, I typically choose 3+ trunks as I think that it adds to the character of the plant and, in the case of Natchez (white) Crape Myrtle, the exfoliating bark is amplified when more than one trunk is shown. On both type of trees, the straighter the trunk, the better. However, with that said, minor defects will quickly fade as the tree gets older – it is just a natural process that, as the tree adds girth, the blemish or slight crook fades. Nevertheless, the straighter it is starting reduces major pruning and training in years ahead. As the tree grows, continue to limb it up using a 1 to 3 ratio – that is, on a 6 foot tree, limb it up 2 feet; on a 9 foot tree, limb it up 3 feet, etc., until the desired clearance is achieved. Typically this keeps the tree in proportion regarding exposed trunk and canopy

area (at least for me) and keeps the tree adequately fed with a large ‘light collecting area’ for photosynthesis. Where necessary, use stakes to keep the tree straight and to minimize the heavy load of blooms and foliage that sometimes can wreak havoc on young trees. If you inherit one bad trunk on a multitrunk tree, don’t worry, usually the tree will produce ‘sucker’ (new) trunks that can be used to your benefit – growing straighter than the original trunks from the garden center. Over time, you can remove an old crooked trunk with a new trunk that has grown straight. It is necessary to limb up the new trunk, over time, using the same formula as above. The timing for your cuts depends largely on the tree. 90% of trees are best pruned in the winter since the sap has long since ‘gone south’ (or into the roots) and you can better see the entire canopy of the tree to see what to remove and what to keep. Remove all limbs that are rubbing a neighboring limb as well as limbs that cross from one side of the tree to the other. Does this mean that you cannot prune in the summer? I say NO. I do small maintenance cuts all the time in the summer (contrary to some gardening magazines and websites). The key is not to do the bulk of your pruning during the summer. On blooming trees another issue can come into play – bloom weight and the overall effect of that weight on the trees structure (often times causing it to bend drastically). Where necessary, thinning cuts can be made to reduce this load and keep your main trunks straighter. The easiest way to instruct on this is to choose the limbs that have the most blooms/weight on them and remove those. As you cut, you will see the tree move to a straighter posture with each cut. Over time, this cut will become unnecessary as the tree develops a heavier caliper or more girth.

Some people eat breakfast at home and pack a lunch to take to school, while others rely on school programs to feed their children. Good nutrition is essential to learning and what children consume at school influences their eating and drinking habits for later in life. Packing school meals takes time and planning. You need to have nutritious food available and you need to take the time to pack it. You can take your child’s preferences into consideration when packing meals. School meals are convenient, but many wonder if they are healthy. The Virginia Department of Education School Nutrition Program has guidelines for school meals. Some argue that these guidelines do not go far enough to provide adequate nutrition to our children. Schools cannot

personalize the meal choices for each child’s needs or preferences. Once a child has packed his lunch, or has gone to the school line, we have little control over what they actually eat. A lot of trading goes on and what they eat may not be what we planned. Who wouldn’t trade the pimento cheese sandwich for trout treasures! The best thing we can do is talk to our children about their food and drink choices. Whether you choose to pack meals or have your kids purchase meals at school, the nutrition in the meal is determined by what they actually put in their mouths. Help them understand why some choices are better than others and model good choices for them by making good choices for yourself. Arthritis and Exercise It is not any fun to exercise when you are in pain. And degenerative joint pain can vary from mild to severe. There can be audible and palpable grinding that is heard and felt as one moves a limb. And of course, the pain and swelling that go along with it. There are many types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is swelling in the joint and breakdown of the joint surfaces which can lead to loss of motion, strength deficits and deformity. The challenge with arthritis, in addition to managing the pain, is to avoid losing motion in the joint. The loss of joint motion is what cripples individuals. It is a vicious cycle; a joint hurts, so you don’t want to move it, without movement, you lose motion in the joint and then it becomes difficult to move it at all. Gradually there is a severe loss of motion in the joint that impairs your ability to function whether is it involves putting on a shirt, reaching overhead or squatting to the floor. It hardly makes sense that exercise will improve matters, but it does. Gentle exercise, guided by profes-

sionals, can restore the joint motion and strength to improve your function. There are some guidelines: 1) it must be pain free exercise 2) frequent rests are important to avoid excessive swelling 3) if you are sore for entire day following the exercise- you have done too much 4) gentle regular exercise can reduce pain. 5) Regular exercise increases strength which will improve your function. 6) regular exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight which reduces stress on your joints. 7) regular walking or cycling is beneficial. 8) It is not necessary to do all the exercises at the same time, in fact, it is more useful to perform small amounts of exercises at various times during the day. The Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department held its 13th Annual Dice Run & Bike Show as well as its 1st Annual Swap Meet. As part of a late-summer fundraising effort, the LVFD also organized a community picnic, the purpose of which, according to Fire Chief Bruce Johnson, was to “each out to the community and get more people involved in fire fighting.”

Margaret and Kenneth Taylor live in what used to the Arrington School House which first opened its doors in 1912. Aside from a front porch renovation, the Taylors have made it a point to preserve the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historical character.

The school house opened in the fall of 1912 and continued operating until 1955. During a portion of that time, Ms. Ruth Anderson, handicapped from an attack of polio at age six, rode a buggy seven miles from Roseland to Arrington to teach the students. “As you can see in the picture, she was on crutches, and she would ride that buggy to school every day,” Mrs. Taylor said. “After she taught here she went to the other local grade schools and taught.” Out front, an enormous ash tree hides a large portion of the renovated front porch. “The original front porch is now used as an entrance room. Children would line up on the porch and say the Pledge of Allegiance and then they would split up into their classrooms,” Mrs. Taylor said. “Students planted the tree out front; they planted two ash trees actually. It must have been planted very early, because the teacher would even park her buggy under the shade of the tree. But one must have eventually died, because it’s not here anymore.” Over the past hundred years, that ash tree has grown into what Mr. Taylor guesses to be one of the biggest in the country. “I wouldn’t be surprised if its five foot across the bottom. It’s a heck of a tree. I don’t know of any bigger,” he said. Inside, a special corner in the basement is decorated with one of the original pot-bellied stoves that heated the school in 1912. “There were two stoves here back then, but only one

was left when we purchased the property,” Mrs. Taylor explained. In a letter penned by Arrington School House alumna Sarah Patterson Stimmel titled “Memories from Childhood Days,” Sarah recalls how the “children closest to the stove were too hot and those on the other side of the room kept their wraps on.” Mrs. Taylor thinks she knows where the coal was tossed, pointing to spots in the yard. “They were bound to have thrown the coal outside, because there is coal all over the place here,” she said. “You dig and you will find coal. And I have the buckets full to prove it”. Back downstairs, tucked deep in the rafters, is a quarter-sized hole, now filled with a chunk of coal, which boys used to peek up girls’ skirts from below. “We put the basement on the house when we moved in. Back then there was only about a three foot crawl space; just big enough for the boys to get their eye around the hole,” Mr. Taylor explained, pointing to a chalked “x” marking the spot. “In the mornings in the winter, the young boys would come in early before the other students arrived to get the stove fired up. They took a poker and they’d stick it in the fire to get it real hot, and then stick it in the floor. And that’s how they got the hole in the floor.” Mrs. Taylor said the school house shut its doors in 1955 when the Nelson County High School opened in Lovingston. The Ruritans then stepped forward and bought the property. “They would have functions where they would

After that, a Greek gentleman purchased the house where he planned to make venetian blinds. “He called himself ‘The Blind Man,’” Mrs. Taylor said, laughing. “As a kid I always thought he was actually blind. I used to wonder, ‘How’s that blind man driving that old station wagon?’”. The ‘Blind Man’ sold the house to the Taylors in 1968, and since that time they have kept true to the theme and have been educating folks about the house’s history ever since. NCL
