While most children (Peyton) are drawn to the junk inside a set of drawers, Mr. Mechanical (Adam) would rather play with the drawers themselves. As I type, the boy is in bed for the night and I have a row of three knotty pine drawers from the guest bathroom vanity lined up end to end on the train table in the den. If he could figure out a way to find daddy’s screwdriver, and unmount the tracks, he’d be fussing with those as well. Dare I take the boy to Gladstone on a Wednesday for lunch at the community center, just steps away from the railroad tracks? In between bites of meat loaf and mac & cheese, would we ever be able to leave? We have storage bins under the train table. Again, Mr. Mechanical could care less about the fabulously interesting play junk inside them. But when you line up those boxes end to end, guess what you have? A train! Trains need wheels. The dishwasher needed unloading. Dishes are round. Train wheels are round. Mr. Mechanical just scored a dozen or so wheels for his train, Pfaltzgraff edition, Yorktown pattern. Keeping a safe distance from Mr. Mechanical, Peyton wanders back to

the open dishwasher and reaches for a no-no. As I gently unwrap her fingers from the handle of a steak knife, she aims her free hand for the whisk. After all, she’s the one who loves to play with wooden spoons and mixing bowls. And when appropriate, she’s worn a bowl or basket on her head like a helmet. Should you venture into Mr. Mechanical’s work area, it behooves you to don the battle armor lest you accidentally disrupt the scientist’s creative process Peyton in the kitchen? Works for me. We can always use another cook. Those ladies in Gladstone know someone’s got to feed those men. Working on the railroad, all the live-long day. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

When in Normandy A group of stalwart travelers accompanied me through Normandy and Brittany, devouring not only the pastoral country and the works of Boudin and Monet, but also feasting on oysters, cheese, cider and calvados. My gastronomical advice to travelers is always the same: eat and drink the food and wine of the region. Since neither Normandy nor Brittany produces any A.O.C. wine, here, in the land of apple trees, we sampled cider. Cider dates back to antiquity, the word coming from a Greek term for “intoxicating drink,” and the Normans have been making it since the Middle Ages. Much of the Breton or Normand cider-maker’s art lies in blending a number of different apple varieties to create balance and complexity. Not unlike grapevines, the older the apple tree, the less the yield, but the better the character of fruit. Low trees contain apples with more sugar, and driving through the country we saw orchards filled with them. Much cider is still an artisanal, hand-crafted product, made without preservatives and often unfiltered,

creating a complex taste. Texturally it resembles Champagne, and like Champagne, cider contains an acidity that makes it especially good with food. Styles of cider range from the doux (sweet) with aromas of apple, honey, cinnamon and candied fruits to the cidre brut, the raw cider, with less sugar and more alcohol. There is a demi-sec cider and also a cidre bouché which simply means a higher quality cider. The traditional cider has little sugar, and aromas of spices and flowers as well as yeast, wood, musty leaves, and cheese. Because of the lower alcohol content, cider is perfect on hot afternoons that linger into evening. The high-alcohol product is Calvados, a brandy made from apples, and good Calvados ranks with the best Cognac. In the old days on festive occasions, the Normans would bring some twenty-four courses to the table. Between the entrée (starter in France) and the plat (main course) there was a “trou” or hole, often lasting several hours in which the custom was to drink Calvados—hence the expression, “le trou Normand.” Like wine, cider offers an abun-

dance of health benefits. A glass of cider a day may well keep the doctor away for apples have health-protective substances, including quercetin and other flavonoids linked to lower risks of cancer. Studies suggest interaction among different phytochemicals boost their effectiveness therefore cooking vegetables in a cider broth doubles the benefits. It appears Nelson County is vying with Normandy for the best cider. Albemarle Ciderworks is a family owned farm dedicated to crafting cider from the distinctive apple varieties the Shelton family grows. Royal Pippin – Imported to England by Benjamin Franklin, the Albemarle Pippin is legendary. Writing from Paris in 1785, Jefferson stated, “They have no apples here to compare with our…Pippin.” This dry cider has a champagne-like quality which is capable of pairing with a wide variety of foods. $17 Also Jupiter’s Legacy, VA Winesap and Ragged Mountain. Look also for the new Bold Rock Cider coming soon. Spain & Portugal May 2013. For more details, Kpfaltz@cstone.net

You reap what you sow. In this case, it’s lavender. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

JULY 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 9

Generations ago, Inglewood’s fields were planted with tobacco. These days, they bloom a fragrant purple. And Martha Stewart shares part of the blame. Kathy Tillman was flipping through a copy of Martha Stewart Living when she saw a piece about a lavender farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She could never get the images out of her head so while she and her family were on an 18-month ‘round-the-world sailing trip, it only seemed natural to start planning for a farm of their own. “We knew that was the next step for us,” said Kathy. It wasn’t long before she and her husband, Shannon, took the plunge. “And, well, we started a lavender farm.” Previously business owners of a different kind, and before that a sailor in the Navy and a stay-at-home mom to Caroline, Violet and Holden (now 15, 7, and 19 months, respectively), the Tillmans had a lot of learning to do. “We have absolutely no experience with any of this,” said Kathy. “So it took some learning but it’s been really fun. The great thing about the world today is that the internet has everything you could ever want… insofar is it works around here.” Kathy has had to learn a lot about running a retail business – Inglewood Lavender sells everything from lavender bath products and books to lavender teas and honeys – while her husband got his hands a bit dirtier. “I love it,” said Shannon.

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2012

“I love being outside. It’s a lot of work, but at least I’m not sitting at a desk. You can be outside and you can stand back and see what you’ve done.” While Kathy gives props to the internet, Shannon can’t say enough good things about his neighbors – many of whom have been farming a great deal longer than he has. “It’s been really challenging,” he said, mentioning several lavender plants that didn’t make it. “But I was lucky because I’ve had some good neighbors.”

In addition to good friends and a good WiFi connection, Kathy said the lavender farm would have never been possible without the help of Caroline, who, in addition to helping out with the family business, somehow has time to make straight As in her self-paced homeschool program and runs her own Etsy-based business. Away from the farm, Caroline’s spending hours on the tennis courts, perfecting her strokes. “Caroline has been amazing helping me,” said the 15-year-old’s mom. “She often updates the website; she runs the shop with me: she helps me select the music, the products, the logo, the labels. She’s been there every step of the way.” All three of the kids, said Kathy, love being part of the farm. Once an antebellum tobacco plantation home to the Cabell family, the Tillmans purchased the Arrington property in 2010 and have been restoring it ever since. The Tillmans chose to plant lavender both because it was something new and different for the area, but also because of the “destination farm” aspect of the plant. continued on page 13

Kathy Tillman sells lavender-themed products – such as soaps, lotions and candles – from a building on the farm that used to be a smokehouse. The antebellum estate in Arrington, once home to the Cabells, has been painstakingly restored since the family purchased it a few years ago. JULY 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 11

“We love the idea of ‘agritourism’ where people can come to you and you get to share your farm with others,” said Kathy, adding that they’d like to eventually love to host more weddings and festivals and have more to do all year long. “I would like to expand into plants that grow in other parts of the year so that we have a lot of beautiful things to see – I’m thinking about sunflowers or rosemary or something. Plus, we want to make it so people have a lot to do – we’re thinking about doing hiking trails.” Shannon added that he’d even love to get some cattle – a long way down the road. For now, he’s just trying to make it through the first summer lavender season. “I’m excited about it – it’s going to be neat,” said Shannon. “We’ve been working so hard and it’s kind of like everything’s coming together now.” NCL

Letting in the summer light Protect your Interiors from Fading – Substantial Solar Heat Reduction – Literally make your Views more Crisp and the Outdoor Colors more Vibrant The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your gorgeous summer views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant summer views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of budding trees 0, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

Mac’s Max Needs a Home! STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS

About three months ago, Elizabeth Campbell of Mac’s Country Store came across what appeared to be a hunting dog. “He just showed up here – he was probably 30 pounds lighter,” said Elizabeth. “And he was real skittish at first, it’s taken us the first month for him to let us love on him, and now he’s fine with that.” Elizabeth has a shelter set up for Max and feeds him a wellbalanced meal every day (and suspects her customers are sneaking him snacks, too), but she’s worried that the pup, who lives outdoors, is going to get hurt. “He was definitely abused,” she said, adding that he’s smart – he’s avoided Animal Control’s traps. A small collection has been taken to pay for a doctor’s visit for Max, but Elizabeth just can’t get there. “I can’t get him into the car and I can’t get a leash on him. So I was hoping maybe somebody who works with abused animals could help me get him to the vet and then to find a home for him.” If anyone knows of a way to help Max, please call Elizabeth at Mac’s Country Store at 277-5305. The Footpath STORY by LYNN COFFEY

I’m not sure where the love of constructing footpaths came from but as a child I was always out in the woods clipping underbrush and raking the ground, making trails to nowhere in particular. It was the being out of doors and creating something by myself that spurred me on when all the other kids grew tired of the project and left for home. This peculiar habit resurrected the year after our family moved to Love. With a little cajoling and the help of several neighbors and my ten year old daughter, construction was started on a footpath through the mountains that led from the rustic hunting camp where we lived over to Reeds Gap where our close neighbors, Boyd and Gladys Coffey, also had a camp. On Friday evenings, about fifteen people met at the Coffey’s camp to have a prayer meeting and I thought it would be neat to walk there through the woods instead of just driving over to the next ridge. This was no small feat, however, since the finished path between the two camps would be several miles in distance. Although our family had lots of help initially, especially on the weekends, the bulk

16 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2012

of the work was left to my young daughter and me during the week when everyone else was at their paying jobs. What made this project so much fun was, at the time, we had a goat, a weanling pig and a one-eyed cat by the name of Boo-Boo who accompanied us to the woods each day. In the mornings, Heather and I would fix a nosebag lunch and put it in our backpack along with the collapsible metal camping cup which was used to capture water from springs along the way. A pair of loppers and a leaf rake completed our needed tools and looking back, we must have been a sight going to the mountains armed to the hilt with trail-making equipment with a goat, pig and cat in parade behind us. The animal trio seemed like they enjoyed spending the day in the woods as much as we did. Hickory the goat nibbled on sapling limbs he could reach while Arnold the pig rooted in the rich humus soil until his heart’s content. Boo-Boo was content to nap on a flat stump, moving his position only when Heather and I got out of sight. We would spend the entire day staking out where the footpath should go, highlighting all the prettiest spots and weaving the trail around them. We looped around “Trillium Pass” which led down to the “Fern Grotto” and on to a whole patch of showy orchis (native orchids) growing on the mountainside. We’d lop off low hanging branches and grapevines before raking the leaves away from the forest floor to make a path that was one-person wide. Don’t laugh ... we found that raking in this way alerted the wildlife to the trail’s existence and they began using it. Deer, especially, know that the path of least resistance is the way to go. And once animals begin traversing it, no new growth will clutter the earth’s floor so trail maintenance is kept at a minimum. The path wound around several of our neighbor’s property, all of which graciously gave us permission to put it across their land. We were insightful enough to make sure the trail always led to these people’s houses so we could stop in for a visit and eat a piece of cake that was invariably offered! The project took us all summer and early fall to complete but we had such a sense of accomplishment during its entirety and many happy years of enjoyment from walking in the beauty and solitude of the mountains. It’s one of the happiest memories I have of our first year in Love. This past spring we undertook the same kind of project over at our Chicken Holler homeplace. Although the path isn’t as long in distance, it rivals the first one in that it follows the gently flowing Pannel Branch along the way. The creek has large flat rocks, perfect for sitting while dangling feet in the cold mountain water, providing a quiet resting spot for body and mind. On Memorial Day weekend our family gathered at the homeplace for an impromptu hot dog roast and some of the girls took a leisurely walk down the path. The resulting photo was taken along the way and the smiles are proof that you don’t have to spend money to have a good time with family and friends. It’s a do-over for the 4th! Whether it be picnic, parade or fireworks, may everyone have a safe and happy 4th of July holiday of your own! NCL

saluting rex STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES On May 29, 2012, a local veteran passed away after 63 years of service – dog years, that is. “Rex was not your ordinary dog; [he] was a hero,” said Sgt. Danny Jones, who lost his best friend and colleague, a purebred German Shepherd. Rex was the model for the War Dog Memorial statue in Olympia, and during his nine [human] years of service, Rex traveled overseas to Iraq and Djibouti, Africa, saving the lives of thousands and earning nine service medals, five combat badges, and five appreciation coins. Not to mention, capturing the heart of one: Sgt. Danny Jones. “Rex and Danny [Sgt. Jones] made a great team,” said Rex’s original owner and Jones family friend Don Irby. Rex retired in April 2009 and it only took the K9 three days to become domesticated, deciding, it appeared, that he had followed enough rules: he started rummaging through trash cans, jumping on beds, and playing endlessly with his favorite red Jolly-ball.

“I tried not to have him on the bed too much,” said Jones. Though battling health issues, Rex was able to perform one more act of heroism despite his aging body: he supported Sgt. Jones until his human companion proposed to his now fiancée, Jessica Allen. On June 9, 2012 a ceremony was held at the couple’s home in Tyro to honor the K9 war hero to “show that military dogs should be honored in a way the other fallen soldiers are and always will be,” said Jessica. “He has been recognized by many and loved by thousands.” In his eulogy, Don described Rex as “a fun-loving dog” and “a faithful companion to Danny.” Even Alice the hunting dog, Rex’s roommate at Sgt. Jones’ house, whined as Sgt. Jones and Jessica transferred the cremated remains into that beloved red Jolly-ball. NCL

Time to fix up the old homeplace?

Get Credit for Preserving History Recent Nelson County news includes a proposal for the Norwood community to register as an historic district. The County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to begin the process of study and evaluation. This is the first step in the process of approval required by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR). I’ll step away from my normal anti-big government position for a moment. DHR is, by far, the best state agency that I have had the pleasure to work with. Their staff is informed, helpful, and proactive. Their website is chock-full of useful information (www.dhr.virginia.gov). If you are interested in this process, I highly recommend a tour of their website. Now – back to the information. What benefit is there for my property to be part of an historic district? How does it happen? What are the restrictions? In addition to the analysis of the historical properties within the community, DHR will consider the cohesiveness of the district and the historical significance of each property and the

district. To fully understand the evaluation process, I would recommend reading the approved applications for the Schuyler and Lovingston districts, which are available on the website. There are no state or federal restrictions placed upon property owners within an approved historic district. Some localities have implemented specific zoning and building restrictions for these districts (at the moment that is not anticipated for Nelson County). For contributing properties that are located in an historic district and for other properties that are separately approved as historic properties, there are state and federal benefits, primarily in the form of tax credits, for rehabilitation expenditures. Both state and federal programs have guidelines for the rehabilitation process. The work must be substantial (e.g. it must exceed a certain amount) and it must be rehabilitative (e.g. it must not be for an addition). To qualify for the federal program, the property must be income producing; the state program has no such requirement. The federal program provides tax credits of 20 percent of the certified

amounts; the state program provides tax credits of 25 percent of the certified amounts. The tax credits are a dollar for dollar reduction in tax liabilities. As an example, if you spend $50,000 renovating your residence that is a contributing property in an approved district, you would be eligible to apply for Virginia tax credits of $12,500 – essentially reducing your out of pocket cost for the renovation work to $37,500. If instead you incurred expenses for an income producing property, you would also be eligible for federal credits of $10,000 – now your $50,000 renovation has only required $27,500 from your pocket. As with any government benefits, there are forms and procedures to complete – both before and after the expenses are incurred. Projects that exceed $100,000 also require a CPA certification. Regardless of the tax benefits, the evaluation process will allow the residents of the Norwood community a unique opportunity to explore and document the historic structures in their community.

Maybe some tax credits will help!

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) rate increase

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

According to answers.com, 25% of Americans don’t even read one book a year. While unsettling, and even alarming, that fun fact is thought provoking especially for someone who reads for pleasure and to discover tidbits of information that can make life more interesting. I was recently browsing my junk mail and found some information worth sharing. Not to offend the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), but how many people read their newsletter, Current Communicator, as mailed in June? If you read it, you are aware of their recent announcement. If you did not, you may want to keep on reading this column. (By the way, thanks for reading my column!) Here is a “current” summary of what is happening with CVEC as it will impact many residents, and future residents, of Nelson County. CVEC Summary; CVEC members will see monthly bills increase by an average of 20%. Effective June 1, 2012, the CVEC rate will increase

from 9.5¢ to 11.5¢ per kilowatt-hour. The average residential member will pay $1 more per day for electric service. History/Background; CVEC is a consumer owned, not-for-profit, cooperative that currently serves 14 counties in Central Virginia to include Nelson County. It was formed 75 years ago when citizens in the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County decided to explore the possibilities of forming a cooperative to construct their own electric service. Cost Comparison: Even with the increase in June, the monthly bills for CVEC members will be less than state and national averages. CVEC published a cost comparison of products over the past 75 years (from 1936 to 2011). The cost of 1 CVEC kWh went from 5¢ to 9.2¢ an increase of 2x. Other price comparisons: dozen eggs 18¢ to $1.73 (10x); loaf of bread 8¢ to $2.28 (28x); gallon of gas from 10¢ to $3.65 (36x); average car $675

still a 20% increase over the previous rate. The increase will NOT support salaries, transportation, equipment, buildings, poles, debt, margins or any other budget items. Projections and Commitment: To avoid significant one time increases in the future, CVEC is diversifying electricity sources under contracts that will differ in length, supplier, geography, fuel source, product type, etc… In addition, CVEC has increased efficiency, and/or cut costs in other areas such as staffing, fleet, equipment and technology. CVEC is committed to providing top notch service at the most competitive rate. For more information, please read your mail OR visit the CVEC website at www.mycvec.com. to $28,400 (42x); house $3,925 to $246,000 (63x). (CVEC remains one of the better values even with the most recent increase in 2012 to 11.5¢ which is a 2.3x increase since being founded 75 years ago.) Rate Increase Explanation: CVEC is paying its power supplier a higher price for electricity and thus the cost of securing power is being passed along to the members. In the past electricity could be purchased under long term (up to 10 year) contracts. Providers are no longer willing to accept the risk of a long term contract. To the benefit of its membership, CVEC refused to sign a new contract in 2008-2010 when prices were as high as double the current contract rate. After negotiating with more than 20 companies, a contract was signed in 2011 with Constellation Energy who had offered the lowest price for energy for the upcoming three year period. While lower than other rates offered, this new rate is

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

A Moonlit Garden Done correctly, patios can become a unique and private destination for dining, entertaining or relaxing after a long day. Leaving the confines of the house and entering the garden, a patio can be a secluded escape – surrounded by select fauna and subtle lighting that can turn a moonlit evening into a dreamlike setting. Some call it a ‘Moonlit Garden’. In my opinion, the best Moonlit Gardens are typically in a shaded area using trees or large shrubs to form a barrier from neighbors or other structures. These large plantings also help to frame the entire area and thereby give it a sense of intimacy. White blooming plants aid in illuminating any structure in the landscape. When these plants are used around an outdoor sitting area, they offer radiance that really draws the eye to this destination – in particular when used in conjunction with the most subtle outdoor lighting. No Moonlit Garden is complete without my old standby, Annabelle Hydrangea. Blooming strong in part sun to full shade, these softball size blooms are absolutely gorgeous – completely covering the 4 foot plant. They begin to bloom in early June and last well into early August. Even after the ‘dance is over’, the blooms are still decorative in nature – often turning a subtle shade of green. Once established, Annabelle has shown herself to be quite drought and competition tolerant, even working well with established trees. Use as a backdrop to your patio. Equally impressive are the panicle Hydrangeas – in particular Limelight or its little sister, Little Lime. Growing from 4 to 7 feet, these hydrangeas begin blooming around the end of June and last the rest of the season. Starting lime green and then turning white to a final rose colored, Little Lime and Limelight will never disappoint. Leave plenty of space for

Limelight as they can become large size shrubs. They also have shown themselves to be fairly drought tolerant once established. The gold speckled foliage of Aucuba Golddust is one of my ‘go to’ evergreens for shaded areas. Slowly growing to around 5 feet in height with a 4 foot spread, Golddust is a great ‘anchor’ for any Moonlit Garden. Although hardy in this area, this plant does like a little protection from the winter winds. Pure green in a Moonlit Garden is equally important and is used as the foundation for the patio. Pure green creates ‘holes’ in the landscape at night but I feel is an equally important and needed element as the perennials and hydrangeas illuminate the area. These pure green elements, typically boxwood or similar shrubs, become the real worker upon the arrival of dawn where too much variegation and white during the daylight hours tends to be too busy and, well tacky, from my vantage point. With the backdrop complete, it is now time to ‘layer down’ with perennials. Some of my long-term favorite white and light colored blooms and foliage perennials are White Nancy Lamium, Great Expectation Hosta, Variegated Solomon Seal, Anemone, Pulmonaria Raspberry Splash, Tiarellas and ferns (my favorite colonizing fern is Japanese Beech Fern). Use all of these in ‘splashes’ around the boxwood and in front of the hydrangeas. Don’t skimp on these – during the moonlit hours, one plant will never show up. Lastly add your lighting– white colored Christmas lights draped haphazardly from the surrounding tree that was used as the foundation for the garden are always a nice idea. When in doubt, use less – lighting is an element of the landscape that should be used for subtle illumination not tanning.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My blood pressure is elevated. Why is this a concern? Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition. Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. The top number is the systolic pressure and the bottom is the diastolic pressure. If either number is elevated you may have hypertension. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 and hypertension is when blood pressure is elevated above 140/90. If your blood pressure is above 120/80 but below 140/90 it is called prehypertension and you are at increased risk of developing hypertension. Blood pressure should be checked on several days to confirm that it is persistently elevated before the diagnosis of hypertension is made. You are at risk of developing hypertension if you are obese, stressed a lot, eat too much salt, drink too much alcohol or smoke. African Americans, people with diabetes or a family history of hypertension are more likely to develop hypertension. Sometimes very high blood pressure may cause headaches, but most of the time it has no symptoms

and is called ‘a silent killer.’ High blood pressure is usually discovered during routine blood pressure checks. Having persistently elevated blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart attacks, congestive heart failure, strokes, kidney failure and blindness. Blood pressure can be reduced by eating a healthy diet and getting daily aerobic exercise, such as walking for 30 minutes. Limiting salt and alcohol intake, and quitting smoking can decrease blood pressure. Losing weight and reducing stress will help. When these measures do not work medications may be necessary. Blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to catastrophic health problems or death. You should have your blood pressure checked yearly and if it is elevated you should see your doctor to determine the best treatment. Lifestyle changes can have a large effect on your blood pressure and overall health. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Have a question for him? Take Control of Arthritis with Exercise Without doubt you or someone you know is affected by Arthritis. What you may not be aware of is that there are over a hundred rheumatic conditions that fall under the umbrella of arthritis causing pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. One in five people have been diagnosed with some form, arthritis being the most common form disability in the U.S. affecting all ages. Many think it’s an inevitable part of aging with little that can be done to help. The good news is there are things you can do to relieve your pain. We will focus here on how you can take control of your Arthritis with exercise. The Arthritis Foundation has developed exercise programs proven to help by reducing pain, stiffness, increasing strength and flexibility. Exercise also improves balance, coordination, energy, and functions for activities of daily living. Socializing at an exercise class is an outlet for stress, decreasing feelings of isolation

and depression. Regular exercise equals an improved quality of life. Three types of exercise are especially helpful to people with Arthritis. Range of Motion exercises improve joint flexibility reducing pain. Strength exercises improve muscle strength- important as weak muscles lead to joint problems. Cardio strengthens heart and lungs, resulting in more stamina also enhancing sleep, weight control, balance, mood and overall health. Relaxation exercises are also recommended including deep breathing and guided imagery with calming music. It’s a great way to help manage stress and promote a better sense of well-being. Though the Afton Family Medicine building is new – its history is storied. And now, thanks to several local artists, so are its walls. Nathan Davis of Afton was commissioned to do a pencil sketch of the former AFM building. “The old doctors’ office – Dr. Raynor’s office,” he said. “Dr. Raynor started that practice and these doctors, they’re carrying it on,” said Betty Scheffield, Afton Family Medicine Office Manager. “A couple of patients came in and offered us the artwork for the practice and we were very happy to accept it because they’re all local pictures: buildings and houses within the county. It’s just very fitting.” In addition to Nathan’s pencil sketch, the new AFM building features artwork by several local artists. Several donated by Darryl Anderson of Avon were done by Nelson native and retired nurse Liz Bryant. Others, donated by Wilma Lee Towler-Taylor, who said her father helped start the first medical building, feature images of her family on the front porch of the house she grew up in by Linda Patrick. “It’s neat [to look back at how it all started],” said Betty. “It’s just good to have it here.” NCL

A school teacher in Afton by day, Jennifer Stuart’s time to shine has come along.

At last! STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

JULY 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 33

“When we went back to the back room to put together the semi-finalist list – the three who would perform again – it was very difficult. Except for Jennifer,” said one of the Paramount Idol’s celebrity judges Andy Waldeck, Warner Brothers and Giant Records recording artist about the competitions winner, Nelsonian Jennifer Stuart. “We all looked at each other and said, ‘Definitely her.’ There was something about her – just an over arching star quality we were looking for. She’s a very talented singer, obviously, and very beautiful, but she was wonderful on stage, using her whole body to tell the story.” Jennifer was one of more than 200 original contestants who were narrowed down to 44 and then to 10 for the American Idol-like event held at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville on May 23. She won the hearts of the judges and crowd with her performances of “Come Together” by the Beatles and “At Last,” popularized by the late Etta James. She wrote an original composition especially for the first round of auditions and sang “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5 for the second. She said she was giddy and not sure how her performance went, so she was surprised by the response she got. “The judges called everybody out to go on stage and they said, after they called my name, that scores weren’t important but that

After winning the competition, she came back for an encore and was helped on stage by fellow contestant Jason Elliott (above). 34 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2012

Below, Stuart is toasted from at left, her friend Fielding Biggs, and the show’s producer Rusty Speidel, center during a reception after winning the Paramount Idol competition.

this woman [Jennifer] got the highest score of the day. It was amazing and I didn’t know what to do.” As the winner, Jennifer won $1,000 and a demo recording, but had no hesitation in saying that the consultation from Red Light Management was the best of the three prizes. “The consultation was the only reason I auditioned,” she said, adding that the actual American Idol is not on her mind. “I’ve been performing for a while and I can perform and I can write and I can work with people, but what does it take to get on a bus and tour, to get in the van and tour, to get

on the plane and tour? I don’t know that, so I hope they can help me.” The talented (and humble) local star performs with her band, the Design, as well as other local musicians including Sally Rose, but currently also balances a full schedule of day jobs. She teaches preschool (and some music and some physical education) at North Branch School during the school year and a nanny during the summers. She also teaches choreography and choral workshops to kids at North Branch and Nelson County High School. For now, Jennifer is loving performing for the

community that she said supported her throughout the competition. “Everywhere I looked, if I made a connection in the audience, I would see my mom and then my students and then [band mate and boyfriend] Jacob [Tal] and [local singer] Sally Rose and my hair dresser [Fielding Biggs of Moxie Hair and Body Lounge].” But she never takes her eye off the goal: to travel the world and play music. “It would be nice to just travel and play,” said the level-headed hopeful star. “If that could keep me financially stable.” NCL

muppets STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

36 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2012

“When I was little, my first memories were of these records that my dad brought home – recordings of this kid’s show that he did,” remembers Sharen Dowdy, of Shipman. The records Sharen remembers were recorded before she was born, from a show called Circle 4 Ranch, a children’s program on which her father – Joseph P. Campbell – acted as Cowboy Joe Campbell. While most people might not recognize Joe Campbell’s name, they will probably recognize the name of one of Joe’s young colleagues – Jim Henson. “Daddy’s program director (Bob Porter), his mother played bridge with Jim Henson’s mother, and Jim would put on puppet shows for the ladies to entertain them,” said Sharen. “As you know, a mother runs the world, and before long Mrs. Porter was encouraging her son to maybe find a place for Jim on Dad’s show.” So a very young Jim Henson met with Joseph and together they had the puppets Longhorn, Shorthorn and Penelope. “I have a handwritten contract signed by Jim giving dad 50% ownership of the Muppets known as Longhorn and Shorthorn,” said Sharen, adding that her dad designed the look and the characters of Longhorn, Shorthorn, and Penelope. She even said her dad can be credited with created the word, “Muppet.” “When people would ask Jim Henson where [the word] came from, he would say it kind of came from the words ‘marionette’ and ‘puppet,’”

but Sharen guesses that Jim, who is remembered as very laid back, and shy, was more interested in working behind the scenes being creative, so he let the “spin doctors” tell his story for him. “It was actually coined from two words: ‘moppet’ and ‘puppet,’” said Sharen. “Moppet is something [the people on Circle 4 Ranch] affectionately called the children who watched. Daddy was always doing stuff like that with words – he was an author. He was a poet.” Sharen said her dad, who was the co-founder of the original Nelson County Players after the family moved to Nelson in the mid-1970s, stayed in touch with Jim Henson over the years, but was never involved with any of the Muppets in the “official” Muppet timeline, which starts with Sam and Friends in 1955 (Longhorn and Shorthorn made their debut in 1954). Still, she and her siblings aren’t quite sure why Cowboy Joe was left out of history. When many of the Muppets were donated to the Smithsonian after Jim Henson’s death, one clever reporter mentioned Joseph’s Muppets. “If Longhorn and Shorthorn ever surfaced, they might duke it out for the title of “Eldest Henson Creature,” but that doesn’t seem likely to happen,” wrote Matt Wilkie of ToughPigs: Muppet Fans Who Grew Up. And Sharen agrees. While she has a lot of artifacts from her dad’s old performing days, Longhorn, Shorthorn and Penelope are not among them. “To my knowledge, I don’t think they survived,” she said. “I don’t know what happened to them.” NCL

Tanya Anisimova’s musical stint in the Blue Ridge mountains ended as it began: playing before a small, intimate groups of cello lovers – often at the home of a friend. “We first fell in love with Virginia 17 years ago in 1995 when we were residents at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), the artist colony in Amherst County,” said Tanya, who, along with painter husband Alexander Anufriev moved to Nelson in 2001. Now, however, the couple (and their two miniature dachshunds) are planning to move back to Boston where they met. They are sad to leave their inspiring home of 11 years, but know it’s the right thing to for both of their careers. “Here is wonderful – quiet, peaceful, inspired,” said Tanya. “But there aren’t many opportunities to show and to play. It is a wonderful laboratory for preparing your projects. After all these years, we were extremely inspired. We have accumulated so much work so I figured I wanted to share it with a larger audience.” Both originally from Russia and extremely well-traveled, Tanya and Alexander have been inspired by Nelson. Tanya, who wrote and performed her first original piece here as part of the VCCA residency in 1995, now, like her husband, paints as well. “For creative people, this is a paradise. The inspiration is evident,” said Tanya. “I hear my recordings and I see how my sound even changed. The air is different in the mountains; the air is more empty. And I think my sound and the colors of my music are definitely mountain colors.” NCL

In October of 2003, Keith Dix called his then-fiancee Bev Lacey and said, “Bev. Basic Necessities is for sale, and you don’t want to live in Nellysford without Basic Necessities.” Thinking that once they got married Bev would be bored on the farm (Blue Heron Farm), the couple purchased the restaurant from Kay Pfaltz, but only on the condition she stayed on the team – after all, she’d created the Nellysford icon from scratch in 1997. “When I returned from France, where I’d been for over 10 years, I came to Nelson and I had been used to an abundance of bread and cheese and wine and fresh produce and everything that the Paris market offered,” said Kay. “And long story short, Judy Nelson and I decided to fix up this little cinder block building which had been so many things over the years ... and it’s been going ever since!” This month, the little café celebrates its 15th birthday! “I think it’s amazing because it’s really a mom and pop shop and people love it,” said Basic’s Manager Sarah Shelton, who has been working there for 12 years on and off. “We’ve watched other businesses come and go and we’re still hanging on; I think it’s a real accomplishment that we’ve been there for 15 years.” What’s in the works for the next 15 years? “My hope is that we can continue to meet the needs of customers we care so much about in Nelson County,” said Bev. ANTIQUES SOLD! – Antique Farmhouse PINE DINING ROOM TABLE SET + 6 Maple Chairs I’ve absolutely loved this table and the maple Windsor style chairs are quite comfy. It measures 30” high by 81” long by 31” wide. I even have a couple of tablecloths that I’ll throw in. The antique dealer I got it from had said it came from a farm house in England in the 1920s. I have removed and then put a fresh coat of furniture wax on it every few years. The chairs are solid maple and are so strong. Pics on Craigslist.
