NCLR has developed Escalera STEM as an addendum to NCLR’s Escalera Program in an effort to boost Latino representation in the STEM workforce. In partnership with the Latinas in STEM (LiS) Foundation, this session promises to prove why a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) can be for you! The LiS Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 by five Latina MIT graduates, will inspire and empower Latinos to pursue STEM fields. Through this workshop, students will gain exposure to careers in STEM, meet professionals in the field, and participate in an interactive hands-on activity. This workshop is relevant to Latino youth because it’s presented by Latinos for Latinos—it will showcase first-generation college students who have worked hard to do well and are now encouraging others to do the same. By presenting tangible role models, we expect to humanize the STEM fields and inspire students to follow in our footsteps.
