Dear 2016 Líderes Participants, Welcome to the 2016 NCLR Líderes Summit! We are glad you could join us in Orlando, an exciting city that is growing in importance for the Latino community. Our gathering gives us a chance to shine a light on a city where nearly one in three residents is Hispanic. In fact, with their talent and spending power, the Latino community is changing the economic, social, and political landscape of our country’s fourth-largest state. But 2016 has tested this community. More than half of Orlando’s Hispanics have relocated from Puerto Rico, which is facing a serious economic and humanitarian crisis. Their search for new opportunities has not always been easy. And most recently, Orlando endured the worst mass shooting in American history. Many of those senselessly lost in that hateful attack were Latino and we share the grief with the families and friends of those taken far too soon. At this year’s Conference, we will pause to remember those lost and the people and community they left behind. We will also pay tribute to a community whose heart is broken, but whose spirit inspires us. Orlando has united as never before and the community’s resilience has moved us all. As we move forward, we are keenly aware of the critical role Latino youth will continue to play in helping our communities heal, grow, and thrive. At this important time, the Líderes Summit will provide a space for you—our Latino youth from around the country—to come together to build new skills, explore professional ambitions, and expand your civic consciousness. You represent the fastest-growing group of potential voters in the nation and we remain committed to helping inform and amplify your voice. The Líderes Summit is a special opportunity to learn, grow, meet new people, and step up into leadership for our community, so please take advantage of all you will encounter! Most importantly, reflect on how you can be an agent of positive change—for your family, for your community, and for our country. About the NCLR Líderes Summit Every summer, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Líderes Summit brings hundreds of youth from college groups and NCLR Affiliates together to participate in four days of workshops and activities that support their academic growth, build their leadership capacity, and promote networking opportunities. The Líderes Summit is the youth component of the NCLR Annual Conference and targets Latino high school and college students, youth leaders, and young professionals. Customized for the two identified age groups, the Líderes Summit is based on NCLR’s long-standing work in youth leadership development. The Rising Leaders track is focused on the academic and leadership development of 14–18-yearold participants, while the Avanzando track focuses on college success, job readiness, and civic engagement for participants 18–23 years of age. As part of the Annual Conference, Líderes Summit attendees have the opportunity to listen to renowned national and local leaders from different sectors. In addition, participants engage in an array of cultural and experiential learning activities during the Summit. Older participants also have access to networking opportunities with other Annual Conference attendees, exposing them to potential and valuable mentorship experiences. Through the Líderes Summit, NCLR highlights best practices from its youth-focused programs as well as those of Affiliates and public and private partners. Youth agency, a critical component of the program, is promoted through a variety of leadership opportunities, including participation as Líderes Summit staff. This select cadre of college students receive additional training in leadership development and event management, which prepares them to lead activities, facilitate workshops, and speak on panels alongside NCLR staff. By participating in the Líderes Summit, Latino youth recognize the power of their voice and their ability to be agents of change in their lives, their families, and their extended communities.

About the National Council of La Raza The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. MEET THE 2016 LĂ?DERES SUMMIT STAFF

Luis De Paz, 23 Luis Alberto De Paz Fernandez was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and arrived to South San Francisco, California, at the young age of 11. He is the proud son of Mexican immigrants and grew up looking after his two younger sisters while working and pursuing the goal of being the first in his family to earn a college degree. Luis was able to accomplish this goal in 2015 when he graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Latin@ studies and a minor in international relations. His passion has always been to help others, especially younger generations. During his free time, Luis enjoys playing soccer, dancing, and watching movies. Luis was hired by San Francisco State University as an outreach specialist and hopes to use this role to help historically under-represented students enter higher education and achieve their academic goals.

Brenda Perez, 20 Brenda V. Perez Amador was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and was raised there for the first 10 years of her life. She settled in Washington D.C., in 2006 and still lives there. When Brenda first arrived to the United States, she was considered an English language learner and faced many obstacles. Nevertheless, with the help of teachers and intrinsic motivation to learn, Brenda was able to learn English and was accepted to the best public high school in D.C. Brenda also became part of a youth-led group called the Student Multiethnic Action Research Team. Participation in this group taught her how to become a youth activist, demand rights as a student, and teach others to do the same. Brenda was part of the film RISERS, which empowered undocumented youth to become community leaders and pursue a higher education. Brenda is a civil engineering student at the University of the District of Columbia.

Pamela Guzman, 21 Pamela GuzmĂĄn was born and raised in Moca, a small town in the Dominican Republic, until the age of 13, when she moved to Philadelphia with her family. In 2010, she joined ASPIRA, INC., a nonprofit organization for Latino leaders to be empowered, and developed a passion for helping Latino youth. Pamela became empowered to empower others to gain self-confidence and pride in who they are and their culture. She learned how to speak up about social issues, even when society disapproved of her accent. Pamela is a senior studying psychology at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In her 6

spare time, she enjoys planning academic and cultural workshops for students, watching movies with her family, playing volleyball, and going out to dance! In the future, she would like to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology, in order to prepare herself to serve the community within the mental health field as Latinos are often underrepresented and or misunderstood in this arena.

Danny Chinchilla, 21 Danny Chinchilla is a junior attending the University of Oklahoma and pursuing his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship and venture management. Growing up in Oklahoma City, Danny aspires to open his own business in the technology sphere and grow it in size. This is his second year serving on staff for the Líderes Summit, and he hopes to empower other young Latino leaders the same way previous staff members empowered him. Danny is also a brother of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc. which is heavily involved with giving back to their community. He is currently serving as chairman for the Tomas Rivera Educational Empowerment Conference, which his fraternity has held for the past 10 years to inform high school students of the opportunities and resources available to them to pursue a higher education.

Kenia Calderon, 22 Kenia Alejandra Calderon was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador and currently resides in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2005, at the young age of 11, she migrated to the United States with her family. Kenia’s lack of regularized status shaped the person and leader she grew up to be. Kenia was not allowed to work; therefore, she figured out ways to use her time and eventually fell in love with volunteering. The more she volunteered, the more she became aware of the issues her community faced and Kenia quickly became an advocate for immigrant rights. There was a need in her community for a platform to educate others about what it means to be undocumented in Iowa. Thus, Kenia created her own blog, coffeewithkenia.com. Her parents’ hard work and struggles continue to motivate Kenia to advocate for their rights and the rights of the 11 million undocumented brothers and sisters in this country.

Alejandra Pichardo, 20 Alejandra Pichardo is from Bayonne, a small town across from Staten Island in New Jersey. She studies diplomacy and international relations at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Alejandra aspires to lead the change in how the Latino community is viewed in the United States, and to promote higher education within the community itself through policy reform and integration of Latino institutions in school systems. She plans to complete her degree and then travel across Latin America. Alejandra is the president of the Latino/a student organization on her campus. She brings programs that educate the student body on Latino culture and many of the issues faced by the community.

Karina Arango, 23 Karina Arango is a proud first-generation college student who graduated from Fontbonne University in spring 2015. As the daughter of a mother who once was undocumented, Karina is passionate about immigration reform and educational opportunities for Latino youth. She has advocated throughout Missouri on the importance of equal access to postsecondary opportunities for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and undocumented students. She has years of experience working on education policies, through internships with The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, Deaconess Foundation, and St. Louis Graduates. Karina’s work has been recognized in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kansas City’s Fox News, the Columbia Daily Tribune, and Nine Network of Public Media. In spring of 2015, Karina was featured as Latina to Watch in ¡En Contacto!, the official magazine of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis. Karina currently works in St. Louis, Missouri, in Ritenour School District as a teacher’s assistant in the district’s International Welcome Center for immigrant students.

Adriana Castorena, 19 Adriana Castorena was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, where she graduated from Loretto Academy High School in 2014. She is currently a sophomore at The University of Texas at El Paso studying multimedia journalism with a minor in Spanish. Adriana is a senator-at-large within the university’s Student Government Association and encourages more campus involvement, especially with incoming freshmen. She is also the chair of the Excel Program, a leadership development program, and has organized a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote campaign on campus. Adriana is currently interning with Texas Senator Jose Rodriguez, learning how the Texas legislature works. After graduation, she hopes to put her knowledge to work for a bilingual news station.

Jessenia Monroy, 23 Jessenia Monroy was born in Long Beach, California. She moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, about eight years ago, and loves to play soccer, volleyball, and many other sports. Jessenia is currently attending Oklahoma State University and pursing a major on applied sociology. Her first year attending the NCLR Conference was in 2010 in San Antonio. She presented at a workshop with the Hispanic Student Association from Oklahoma State University, and was happy to serve on the 2015 Líderes Summit staff team.

Sayra Martinez, 21 Sayra Martinez is a current student at the University of Oklahoma majoring in human relations. Her hometown is Oklahoma City. Her greatest passion is to serve her community in different ways, mostly by recruiting students to go to her favorite university (Boomer Sooner!). Her hobbies include being with her friends and family and enjoying a night out, dancing from bachata to banda. She plans to one day attain her master’s in education studies and working in the Department of Education. She has attended the NCLR Conference twice previously and has been impacted in a different way each time. Sayra remembers going to the gala in which for the first time she was in a room full of Latinos who had ambition to go above and beyond what was expected.

CREATING SAFE SPACES FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY: HOW TO MOVE FORWARD? The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) created the Safer Space Committee to carve an inclusive space for LGBT youth and staff in Washington, DC. This session will highlight social determinates of health impacting young adult LGBT Latinxs and will describe the ¡EMPODERATE! model developed by La Clinica del Pueblo to address health disparities by creating a safe space for this population. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to identify the challenges and best practices for developing interventions for gay Latino young men and young adult transgender Latinas. In this workshop, participants will challenge this perspective and focus instead on what unique qualities and assets Latinx and first-generation students bring to the table. This workshop will use stories from participants’ own lives to fuel the dialogue and write creative resumes. Students will further engage in self-exploration by identifying specific values and skills they possess as cultural beings and how these skills, values, and experiences can be leveraged to be successful leaders on campus.

Speakers and NCLR Civic Engagement staff will highlight how other young Latino leaders have leveraged their own power to mobilize others around important issues. Special consideration will be given to how Líderes Summit participants can empower their families, friends, and local community with tools like the #LatinosVote app.
