High doses of adversity and incidents of trauma, such as family separation due to migration or raids, violence, or poverty, can affect children’s developing brains and immune systems, thus placing them at greater risk of developing adverse health behaviors as adults. Explore the complexities and effects of the current political and cultural environment on mental health and emotional well-­being among Latino children and families. Identify protective and risk factors, and explore strategies aimed at addressing adverse child experiences to promote and foster resilient, inclusive, and equitable communities where children and families can thrive.

Protecting and Advancing Health Policy Gains: A Focus on Health Equity and Children* Phoenix Convention Center North Building, Meeting Room 128B In recent years, federal and state policy gains have positioned more children for healthier, brighter futures, including immigrants and children of color. However, given the current policy environment, those gains are vulnerable to being weakened. Latino Health Access in Rural America

The social, economic, and cultural factors that characterize rural areas—such as geographic isolation, lack of transportation, higher poverty, higher uninsured rate, higher chronic condition rates, and a shortage of health providers—contribute to greater health disparities for the more than 45 million Americans—of which nearly 10% are Latino—who live in rural America. Gain a deeper understanding of the unique needs, challenges, best practices, and solutions to addressing Latino health in rural areas, from structural and individual access to increase activation to appropriate health care coordination.

Major gains in access to affordable, equitable, and quality health care have been made since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), reducing the uninsured rate by almost half. As Congress and the new administration continue to enact legislation to repeal and replace major parts of the ACA, the health status and livelihood of millions of Latino children and families are at stake. An estimated 24 million Americans could be stripped of their health coverage, including eight million Latinos. Additionally, more than $800 billion could be cut from Medicaid. During the Health Town Hall, you will hear from key leaders in policy, consumer advocacy, provider, and public sector on what’s at stake, who are the winners and losers, and how we can advocate and advance good policy solutions that protect the most vulnerable members of our communities and create a more equitable health care system for all Americans.
