L atinos and H ealth Coverage: South Dakota by the Numbers L atinos1 are more likely to be uninsured than any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S. +RZHYHU +LVSDQLF IDPLOLHVœ DFFHVV WR KHDOWK LQVXUDQFH YDULHV E\ VWDWH (see F igure 1). In South Dakota: ™ L atinos have inadequate access to the cur rent health coverage system. In 2008, only about one-half (51.8%) of all Latinos living in South Dakota had employersponsored health insurance, and about two-fifths (19.4%) were covered by Medicaid RU WKH &KLOGUHQœV +HDOWh Insurance Program.2 ™ As a result, L atino families are at risk for uninsurance. That year, more than one in four (28.4%) Latinos in South Dakota were uninsured, and one in five (19.9%) Latino children under age 18 had no form of health coverage.3 ™ L atinos are over represented among the uninsured. Although Hispanics made up 2.5% of the total state population in 2008, they represented 5.7% of South DakotaœV uninsured.4
