NCLR AmeriCorps staff will be available to meet with Affiliates interested in supporting an AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service and each year AmeriCorps offers eligible participants the opportunity to serve in their communities to address critical human needs. AmeriCorps Members currently serving at Affiliate locations are providing literacy tutoring, building capacity, teaching computer classes, and recruiting volunteers. Upon successfully completing their service AmeriCorps Members are eligible to earn an education award that can be applied to past, current, and future educational expenses. Interested Affiliates are invited to meet with NCLR AmeriCorps staff to learn about how they might bring the program to their community. Presenter

Teen pregnancy rates have fallen dramatically over the last 20 years, yet Latinas still have the highest rates of any group. Join the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and NYU’s Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health to learn about a family-based intervention developed for Latino families that has been shown to prevent early initiation of sex. This workshop will review teen birth data and provide information on the Families Talking Together program, including its delivery by promotores de salud.

However, the law’s provision for Medicaid expansion remains unfulfilled, leaving millions shut out of an opportunity for coverage. Since the 2008 financial crisis, the gap between minority and White homeownership has widened and young people are even less likely to become homeowners. The long-term impact of this trend could be dire. In this workshop, learn how an entire generation is at risk of missing out on the financial security that comes with homeownership.

Missing from the public discourse, however, are the stories of Hispanics who have lost their lives in such incidents. This workshop will address Latinos’ experiences with extreme policing and the steps necessary to restore trust between police and the Latino community. Attendees will hear from leaders in the field and receive background materials on Hispanics’ interactions with the criminal justice system.

Latino Childhood Obesity and the Fight for a Healthier Generation HEALTH Room 2205

Despite nationwide progress, Latino children remain at greater risk of being overweight and obese. This can lead to serious chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, impacting quality of life and life expectancy. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the state of childhood obesity; hear from organizations leading the charge to advance policy, systems, and environmental change; and learn about opportunities to take action and join a larger movement fighting for the health of Latino children. The cost of application and legal services fees are troublesome obstacles for aspiring U.S. citizens and immigrants eligible for the Obama administration’s DACA and DAPA programs. This session will review current models in citizenship and DACA loan programs that have helped applicants cover fees while building long-term financial stability. The roundtable will explain how community organizations can integrate legal services and financial capability, and what lenders and community organizations should consider when working together.
