A Message from the Board Chair FISCAL YE AR 2017: CELEBR ATING 20 YE ARS
Fiscal Year 2017 was a tremendous year for NC MedAssist, our 20th year of providing medications free-of-charge to low-income, uninsured residents in North Carolina. The Free Pharmacy Program provided over $48.5 million in prescription medications to 15,565 individual patients, while the Over the Counter Medicine Program, with the help of 4,319 volunteers, provided $5.4 million in OTCs to 21,819 individuals – all representing record program levels for NC MedAssist. These efforts were made possible by the generous support of our donors, grantor agencies, and the dedication of our wonderful NC MedAssist staff and volunteers. NC MedAssist raised over $822,000; an organizational record which was made possible by approximately 1,900 donors. It is so rewarding to receive backing from individuals, like you, who are invested in a very efficient organization that is able to produce improved health outcomes. As the only statewide not-for-profit pharmacy, NC MedAssist operates at the intersection where great value meets great need, providing approximately $17 in free medications for every $1 of revenue received (an ROI of 1,700%), thereby empowering our low-income, uninsured patients to live their best lives, improving population health, and playing a vital role in economic mobility. Yet, with approximately 500,000 people still uninsured in North Carolina and no structural changes on the horizon, there is great opportunity for NC MedAssist to do even more! Imagine a North Carolina where there are no citizens with uncontrolled diabetes, untreated asthma, or high cholesterol due to lack of access to medications; and a North Carolina where our neighbors are free from fear of not knowing whether they can afford their medications. Therefore, the opportunity to act is now. With your continued support, and through
collaboration with our over 100 Partner Agencies across the state, NC MedAssist

will continue to deliver on its mission of providing life-saving and life-enabling medications free-of-charge to our fellow citizens in need. On behalf of our patients, our Board and our staff, I thank you for your continued support and your time, talent, and treasures. .

A Message from the CEO CELEBR ATING 20 YE ARS OF GROW TH
In 1997, MedAssist of Mecklenburg was formed to serve seniors in Mecklenburg County. Started by a grant from then Presbyterian Hospital and Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment, MedAssist opened its doors to low-income senior adults who could not afford their medications. At that time, Medicare helped seniors pay for hospital care and some doctor visits, but seniors had to pay for prescriptions out of pocket. For low-income senior adults, often this was a life-threatening situation. As we celebrate 20 years of serving the low-income and uninsured, I reflect back on how far we have come as an organization. Our reach and awareness continues to grow, as we now work with over 100 Partner Agencies across North Carolina to ensure uninsured people get the medications they need. In eight short years, since the statewide expansion provided by the Attorney General’s Office, we have grown from working with only one county (Mecklenburg County), to working with all 100 counties in North Carolina. Since 2009, we have provided prescription medications to over 70,000 people. However, as we celebrate this wonderful milestone, our organization understands that there are still people in North Carolina that are falling through the cracks. Through the Mobile Free Pharmacy, we are taking hundreds of boxes of over-thecounter medication into poor neighborhoods across NC. Recently in Guilford County during one of our giveaway days, we identified 89 uninsured people who needed a medical home. By working with our medical partners who were in attendance, these 89 very sick individuals were placed in medical homes. Our patients deal with some severe, but treatable health conditions every day. From diabetes to asthma to mental health, we work hard to educate the community on the serious need for resources like NC MedAssist’s Free Pharmacy Program. 84% of patients we serve are below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level. For an individual adult, that means they make less than $12,000 annually; often referred to as the working poor. It is a privilege to be part of this work. I also celebrate my tenth year as the CEO of NC MedAssist. I know that none of this work would be possible without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support of our patients. With the community’s help, NC MedAssist can continue to reach the poorest of the poor in North Carolina and find them the health resources they so desperately need. Gratefully,
Lori Giang CEO
