MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR In completing our 21st year, NC MedAssist continued to see substantial and sustained growth. In Fiscal Year 2018, NC MedAssist’s Free Pharmacy Program saw a 35% increase in the number of prescriptions dispensed. A total of 181,831, 90-day prescriptions worth $68.5 million, were dispensed to low-income, uninsured patients across North Carolina. Importantly, access to these medications resulted in reduced ER visits and hospitalizations, enabling us to provide $124.5 million in total economic benefit to the State of NC and our hospital systems. As we celebrate these essential accomplishments, we are acutely aware that there is more work to be done and more people to serve. We know there are approximately 500,000 of our neighbors who still need the help of NC MedAssist. Our vision for 2020 is to assist a total of 50,000 individuals, so we cannot slow down now. In order to continue our important mission, we require your time, talent and treasure to help those in our community who are suffering from chronic illnesses. For every dollar donated, NC MedAssist dispensed $20 in free medications (both prescription and over-the-counter), back to our community, achieving a 20:1 ROI! It has been extremely gratifying, as well as a privileged opportunity and distinct pleasure, to serve as Board Chair. As my time as Chair comes to a close, I will continue to be an advocate for NC MedAssist and the patients that we serve across North Carolina. Patients like Elaine, who said after receiving her medication, “I feel so appreciative to have been approved for The Free Pharmacy Program. Being able to receive my medications has eased my anxiety.” On behalf of Elaine, and the thousands of other patients we served in FY2018, we are very grateful for your generous and compassionate support. Over the past fiscal year, we engaged approximately 1,900 donors and over 5,000 volunteers who supported our patients and mission. Without you, we would not be able to travel across the state to fill a mother’s medicine cabinet or a diabetic patient’s insulin prescription. Because of you, we can accomplish all of these vital and humanitarian services.

Sid Bernstein FY17-18 Board Chair

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Thank you for supporting our mission to provide lifesaving prescription medications to our neighbors, who are uninsured and low-income. Because of you, our patients received hope for better health, the ability to continue working, and the dignity to remain independent. NC MedAssist saw record-breaking support from generous corporate and individual donors giving over $1.1 million. This raised the percentage of philanthropy in our total budget to 32%. Grants from Foundations, UWCC, Mecklenburg County and the General Assembly made up the other 68%. This private funding growth supports our vision to grow our percentage of philanthropy to 40% of the overall budget. We are humbled by the response of our donors through our various activities. Our sincerest appreciation goes to supporters like Steve Smith, former Carolina Panther, who personally shared his childhood struggles and lack of access to healthcare with our Charlotte Executive Luncheon audience. We are very grateful to Bob Ingram, former GlaxoSmithKline CEO, for his key note address at our Raleigh Executive Luncheon, reminding us of the scientific advances that bring healing medications to loved-ones. We are energized by the passion of our volunteers, who donate generously of their time. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Billy Gerhart for his 11 years of service. Bill was recognized this year with the NC MedAssist Joyce Award for Excellence in Volunteerism. Because of his 100+ hours of service, NC MedAssist was able to start an Over-the-Counter Medicine program in 2012. In that first year, we gave away OTC medications valued at approximately $300,000 in Mecklenburg County alone. This past fiscal year we distributed over $5 million across the entire state of NC. We are inspired by our Board of Directors, who give continuously of their time, talent and treasure all year long. Their commitment to serving as ambassadors for the mission helped to expand our reach and the engagement of donors. On behalf of the very special people we serve ‒ our patients ‒ we sincerely thank you for creating thousands of opportunities to impact the lives of people in crisis. Each week we receive messages from our patients that express how much it means to them to have access to their prescription medications. My deepest gratitude for your ongoing support of our patients and their pursuit of hope, happiness, and health.
