Artology 2012 Camp Newsletter July 6, 2012 Week 1 & Week 2

Next week’s theme:

Week 1’s theme: Our 5 Senses Artologists examined their natural surroundings using all 5 senses.

SPACE

Some things they spotted: a decomposing snake, a fawn, and miniature berries.

Upcoming Trips

Some plants they smelled & tasted: rosemary, mint, onion grass

Some tools they used: magnifying glasses, microscopes, hand held microscopes, bug zappers

Some organisms they identified: paramecium, water flea, different plant & bird species

Artologists also: 

painted zoomed-in portraits of their surroundings

created “back-to-back” drawings with their peers

made terrariums

explored the scientific research method through experiments involving sunflowers

created a mural made of mossy silhouettes

explored the National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum

explored mosaics at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens

Artologists:  Learned how the Wissahickon creek was shaped by ancient forces  Identified different rock formations and rock types at Wissahickon Park (the boys went on a quest for Garnet!)  Created ‘en plein air’ watercolor paintings  Wrote haikus about the outdoors  Made origami fire balls and ice cubes  Recreated the history of the 1st 600 million years of earth  Performed a climate change experiment- creating and cooling or heating their own greenhouses  Went on an “Art Hunt” throughout the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
