Summary Artology 2010 focused on water as a theme of exploration and the program continued to grow in significant ways! The program grew from 5 to 7 weeks (4 weeks for grades 6‐8 and 3 weeks for grades 4‐5). Participation increased from 41 students to 64 students, a 56% increase. 23% of the the participants were returning students from previous years. 41% of students had perfect or near perfect (only missing one day) attendance. Artology served students who were: 48% female, 52% male, and 86% African American. 83% of students came from families at or below Federal Poverty Level or from low‐income households. 25% of students were coping with homelessness, which remains consistent with 2009 statistics. Because Artology is offered free, many of these students would not be able to attend this quality of summer programming otherwise! Our Pre and Post test results show that 93% of students demonstrated overall positive change with an average percent positive change of 20%. The highest and most significant increases were in science and art knowledge. Starting out each day with a drumming circle continues to be a big hit with students. They said the drumming made them feel…: • • •
“…Happy. Drum circle made me feel alive”.
“…Free because we got to make our own beats” “…Awaken[ed] and ready for the rest of the day”
This year the program added a community service project through collaboration with the Tookany, Tacony‐Frankford Watershed Partnership Inc. After learning about water issues and researching water loving plants, students (grades 6‐8) created their own “water garden” art installation in an abandoned lot. Together students and staff made over 600 plant sculptures that were installed for 2 weeks. The day of installation included a reception with participation from parents, neighbors, and local community leaders. During the reception students rose to the occasion and served as “tour guides” for the visitors. They proudly discussed how they made the installation and what they learned through the process. In the participant survey, many students listed this project as their favorite part of Artology. 3
“Student leader” proves to be a lasting tradition at Artology. These students are exceptional 6‐8 graders that were invited back to help with the younger group (grades 4‐5). This year 10 students wrote essays in order to apply for the positions and 4 were chosen to return. Also, the 3 Junior Leaders (High School students) continued to show increased maturity and responsibility, especially Chris who started working with Artology in 2008 and has been participating in Buildabridge programming since 2007. Unexpectedly, one Junior Leader was a returning participant from 2008 that Artology had lost contact with! The culminating art show was another great success at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with a significant increase in student and parent participation at the final reception. The reception included refreshments at Second Baptist Church and then an award ceremony at the museum. The room were the ceremony was held was packed (standing room only) with over 200 people. This year we collected surveys and conducted interviews that yielded many powerful responses from students, staff, and parents. For the second year in a row, 100% of surveyed parents want their children to participate again next year. Overall we are encouraged by the significant progress and inspired to overcome any challenges. One student wrote that Artology is “the best camp in the world!” "Artology has helped me learn to respect and enjoy the world that I live in. Artology has shown me that art and biology are not just one thing. If we really look around us, we will discover things that we may have not noticed before and it can be used to make art or is a part of biology…” ‐ Autumn 4
“Artology means a lot to me because when I go back to school I’ll always be putting up my hand in class.”
‐ Kendra

Pre‐Post Test: This is a tool that we continue to fine tune. We seem to be able to collect accurate and significant knowledge data, but are still looking for the right tools to measure change in attitudes and beliefs. The tests uses Likert Scale, Multiple Choice, and Response questions to measure beliefs (or attitudes) and knowledge in these areas: Community beliefs “At Artology I learned o Ex. Do they belong to a supportive Community? about water testing and Nature beliefs how to find nitrate, o Do they know where Greenspace in Philadelphia is? phosphate, and turbidity in o Are they comfortable with Nature? a body of water. I also Environmental beliefs learned that invertebrates o Do they know about Environmental Issues? don’t have a backbone but o Do they have an impact on the Environment? vertebrates do...” Learning/School beliefs o Is it important for them to do well in school? ‐ Josh o Do they often get excited about learning? Science knowledge Art knowledge Internal Locus of Control beliefs o Are they concerned that problems will control their life? o Can they do the right thing, even when its hard? Of the 64 students 42 students took both the tests. 25, 6‐8th graders and 17, 4‐5th graders We have data for 66% of students participating. 6

*The differences in 6‐8th grades and 4‐5th grades might be related to curriculum, test question level, or simply 4 weeks of programming for grades 6‐8 and 3 weeks of programming for grades 4‐5. In our Likert Scale belief questions some “Artology means a camp with caring leaders questions stood out as showing positive change: that help you to become a great lawyer. They help us to reach our goals, or even to care (*means it appeared for both groups) about them.” - Justine Grades 6‐8 *Philadelphia has lots of green parks and I know where they are I often spend time in Philadelphia’s green parks *I feel that it is my responsibility to help solve environmental problems in my community I often get excited about learning new things Doing well in school will help me achieve my dreams for the future I feel like I can have a positive impact on my community I believe in standing up for what is right, no matter what other people think I like to help people even if its hard work I don’t believe that my problems will always control my life I believe becoming a success if a matter of hard work, not just luck I am confident that I can handle future problems Grades 4‐5 I feel like I am part of a supportive community *Philadelphia has lots of green parks and I know where they are I am not afraid of bugs and being outside *I feel that it is my responsibility to help solve environmental problems in my community I know about environmental Issues in my community I have control over the things that happen to me

LUKE How is Artology important to you? You know for me I love blending all the kids from different backgrounds and the curriculum was outstanding, and the amount of adult involvement is unusual for how affordable it is. Other camps have 50‐80 kids for just a week and a kind of warehouse service, and supervision isn’t good—not well thought out content. Really nice to me that it is affordable and it is true that the curriculum really fit Luke. Bank deposit adapting a gem system in home What changes in your child did you notice because of Artology? Hmmmm….no I think , you know I guess it’s kind of odd…looking at you guys as teachers, helpful for parents to hear what were their (the children’s)growing points…maybe a little more feedback regarding the child’s assets and challenges. When Alicia called me before the first day, maybe there’s an opening for a question like anything that your kid has for behaviors that we can monitor? When he had the bee sting…he has a high pain threshold…doesn’t really have an awareness of his body… The whole program was very nice. The awkwardness…are you bumping another kid off of being able to attend the camp?
Student Quotes (6-8th grades):
23
Tasia “It would be great for Artology for me to become a student leader because when I get my campaign running I will give Artology some publicity and tell everyone how great the program is, how the staff is wonderful and teaches you a lot of fun things while it also teaches you things that they might not teach students in school.” “I really would like to become a student leader because everything is so fun and the camp teaches you a lot and I would like to share all the things I have learned with students that are younger than me.” Justine Dillard “I have learned to work hard and to be more connected with nature at Artology.” “To me Artology has taught me to keep pushing forward, to respect the environment, and to remind others to respect the environment too.” “Artology means a camp with caring leaders that help you to become a great lawyer. They help us to reach our goals, or even to care about them.” Kendra “At Artology I have learned a lot about science and art such as bugs and plants and contour and contrast.” “Artology means a lot to me because when I go back to school I’ll always be putting up my hand in class.” Autumn “I have learned from Artology that there are many forms of art …Art can be made out of everyday things around us, especially materials that can be recycled. Art can be music, dance, singing, painting, sculpturing, etc.” “Artology has helped me learn to respect and enjoy the world that I live in. Artology has shown me that art and biology are not just one thing. If we really look around us, we will discover things that we may have not noticed before and it can be used to make art or is a part of biology.” Joshua “At Artology I learned about water testing and how to find nitrate, phosphate, and turbidity in a body of water. I also learned that invertebrates don’t have a backbone but vertebrates do. These are two things that I learned at Artology.” Jessica 24
“For me Artology is an awesome educational program about science and art. They teach you about many different things that you never knew before and it also teaches kids how to be more intellectual, and take on different challenges. Artology also shows you how to go out into the world and do things hands on.” “I am very thankful that I came to Artology because this camp has taught me to think more deeply about real world problems.” Jayson “To me Artology means making learning fun. ‘Ology’ means studying, which kids do not like to do in the summer time. Because the camp’s name has the word art, which kids love to do, it makes studying fun.” “There are a lot of fun things to do at camp, like in the mornings we have drum circle. That is when we gather around in a circle and play drums. What I like most about drum circle is we get a chance to make our own beats.” Décor “Artology has taught me a lot of educational lessons, but most importantly, I have learned many life morals as well.” “It means a lot when I can have a fun summer and get educated without getting into too much trouble.” Isaiah “The things I learned at Artology are how to burn leaves with a magnifying glass, what molecules are, and how to look and draw a painting and how to get better at my contour drawings.” Brianna “Artology has taught me to always think about the positives and to let the negatives slip out the door.” “Artology has also taught me that getting frustrated, and an attitude is not the solution to any problem. When are getting frustrated, or about to you need to just calm down, and keep moving.” “Artology has taught me to be the best I can be. They have taught me how to become a better me, improving myself day by day.”

Keep-Change for 2010 Things to improve/change: 1. Not all but maybe some of the science lessons...? I felt many went over the younger kids' heads and was more work trying to keep the kids listening, taking in what David was saying, then doing the work to try to learn the lesson. 2. A couple of the scavenger hunts. Some were great (the one at the museum was fun but it was the first one) but ultimately they got too competitive and become too much work for the group leader. Trying to watch the kids, keep them together and focussed ‐ 3. More details about the schedule during the outings need to be given to the group leaders. The kids were always asking me what we would be doing when we got where we were going but I could never tell them because I had no idea what we'd be doing once there... 4. Extra: The extra‐heavy cotton t‐shirts need to go. They're like flannel in this heat ‐ I started sweating as soon as I put it on it the morning. 5. Incorporate a “free day”/open‐ended prompt or two for journals – give the kids a 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.
chance to express themselves freely, without having to fill out a specific prompt More “inter‐group/team” interaction (ie the bus teams) aside from the drum circle More time for art projects, like introducing them sooner. Let behavior dictate activities children can participate in, do not just included everyone. Have at least one trip not artology related (movies, bowling, etc.) I can't really think of a third thing lol 3 things Artology should definitely keep:
13. The only thing I may suggest is to change up the destinations and or assignments maybe
every other year. 14. Also, maybe end the camp with a big bang by taking them to an amusement park or somewhere they will really fun and only to have fun. This will be their last fun memory at Artology. 15. The drum circle may benefit from establishing an end goal as identified by an intern or Charlene, such as a specific song/choreography… possibly the occasional addition of a contemporary musical component (i.e. drumming beats to a popular song). …This was discussed briefly but could be suggested to and implemented by future interns. 16. The implementation of a short, daily briefing for the interns and teachers to start as a more cohesive and synthesized group, and to make all aware of the schedule and plan for the day with the aim of time efficiency and, in turn, effectiveness. This may also help with improved communication and adherence to the schedule. 17. A stronger focus on journaling at the end of the day to encourage reflection and concretizing of daily activities and learnings. This may also provide time for more individualized supervision/help with group members who are struggling. 18. If at all possible in scheduling, the interns may be better utilized if there were two weeks of prep prior to the start of camp and one week for assessment/evaluation as opposed to one prior and two following. 19. More visual art exploration (i.e. open‐ended art tasks) as a form of creative expression.

Things to keep! : 1. Drum Circle. A great, uniting, non‐competitive (other than the heart drum, the competitive nature of which can be mitigated if given daily to a different kid rather than letting the kids pick it) energizing morning exercise to start the day with, get going and get some stress release. 2. Trips to the PMA; Waterworks; Wissahicken Creek; Japanese House; the Aquarium; Awbury Aboretum: all fun and enjoyable for the kids (except the Aboretum & the Wildlife Refuge) because of the heat those days and b/c of being disorganized at the Arboretum; otherwise they would be great). 3. The art project in which they did the underwater creatures was, I think, the most creative and most fun for them. When an art project can incorporate so many different visual elements with which to express themselves them more freedom and elevates their interest level. They also end up with such different and exciting pieces. During the underwater creatures project their excitement was palpable and showed up in the work. 4. The group arrangements – provided an excellent means of team/relationship building for the students, as well as the staff 5. The idea of “journal time” in general – it’s a great way to stimulate the students’ creative thinking skills and for them to practice writing 6. Going out for trips every other day – keeps things exciting and gets kids to go and experience the outdoors more 7. I liked the fact that we went on a lot of trips. 8. The way that the days were structured and mapped out 9. The gem system and store to motivate positive behaviors and actions. 10. The Drum Circle is a great way to build carmaderie, let off steam and get ready for the days events. It also provides a starting point to a cultural connection and references other art forms. Brilliant! 11. The Creek Walk with clean‐up is essential. From the comments I heard many of the children don’t know the park exists and some never thought they could walk that long! The lesson about trash and recycling that they learn by doing is PRICELESS! 12. The Cameras allow for a total picture. So pretty. 13. Drum circle as a way to begin the day with unified creativity, motivating the group for the rest of the activities of the day. 14. Transportation: drivers were kind, behavior on the busses was good, organization and breaking into two groups helped maintain structure and order. 15. Field trips were varied, and activities on field trips were engaging and educational for the kids and staff. 16. Gem system was a positive reinforcement for good behavior, taught responsibility, budgeting and finances. 17. The cameras were a wonderful way to document the experiences and allowing the campers to use them provided an opportunity to demonstrate trust and responsibility.
