Your New College

New College is an academic sixth form which is different from both a school sixth form and a general further education college. Our students are aged 16-19, studying either A Levels, Applied General subjects or a mixture of both. New College is a stepping stone to university and your experience with us will feel very different from Year 11. Firstly, students don’t have to wear uniforms and there are no lesson bells but, more importantly, we work hard to develop an adult relationship with our students. We balance our expectation that you will want to work hard and make good progress, whilst trusting you to use your time and the college facilities as a young adult and an independent student. Throughout your time with us, we will constantly check your wellbeing and will always be available whenever you need to speak to us about your concerns.

YOUR

SUBJECT CHOICES New College is the perfect size for sixth form study – we’re small enough to feel like a community but large enough to offer a huge range of subjects. This means you can genuinely choose the subjects that really excite you, that play to your strengths and link to your future plans. We can tailor your combination of subjects to you as an individual. Helping you to select the right courses is critically important, which is why your admissions interview and your enrolment meeting after your GCSE results are so important. Don’t worry if you’ve changed your mind about your subjects; just let us know by emailing studentservices@nclt.ac.uk, or when you enrol. It’s best to let us know as soon as you can though, just in case any subjects do become full.

PROGRESS Throughout your time at New College you’ll know exactly how you are progressing. We use lots of assessment, including traditional exams but also small, informal knowledge checks during lessons and via your homework (directed independent learning). You’ll be receiving regular feedback, reflecting on the areas you need to target, and addressing any weaknesses really quickly. This helps you to feel confident and in control, and it means you’ll be very well prepared for your final exams or assignments. After each assessment your teacher will review any extra support you need and agree with you your next steps. You and your parents/carers can check all of your assessment grades and a summary of agreed support and next steps through Cedar, our online portal. Each student will also have a progress tutor who will have the helicopter view of how you are getting on across all of your subjects.

WELLBEING & SUPPORT New College is a place which embraces and celebrates our differences. We want all of our students to feel happy, valued and well-supported. Your Progress Tutor will often be your first port-of-call if you’re finding things tough. They can provide you with individual support or signpost you to other professionals that can also help, such as our team of counsellors or organisations outside of college. We run lots of events and campaigns throughout the year, helping students to stay safe and to make positive decisions which support good physical and mental health. We also have an experienced and committed team supporting students with additional learning needs (SEND) and a dedicated safeguarding team.

Here at New College, we have created the NCLT Baccalaureate which is an award you can achieve during your time with us. The award aims to recognise all the hard work and dedication you put into your studies as well as other aspects of college life you are involved with. By taking part in the programme, you can choose from a range of activities to complete which will challenge you and help you grow and develop confidence in softer skills such as communication and teamwork. You will make new friends through enrichment activities and become more socially aware of the challenges other people face in your community. At the end of the programme, you will receive a certificate, endorsed by The University of Hull through an awards ceremony to celebrate your achievements.

This could be online learning, be part of a university programme or an Extended Project Qualification; or if you want to pursue an apprenticeship, you can complete The Employability Award, supported through the University of Hull. Personal Development: You can participate in the college enrichment programme, including anything from Sports, Health and Well-being sessions, to Debating, LGBTQ+, STEM club and Music. Community Service: You can take part in a voluntary project with an organisation or independently to benefit other people in the community.

WHAT OUR

STUDENTS SAY Abdelrahman Mohammad Former High School - Grange Technology College What subjects are you studying at New College? A level Chemistry, A level Maths and A level Biology What is it like studying at New College? It’s very different from what I had pictured, you have a lot more independence on what you want to do and how you want to work around different tasks. It almost feels like you’re already at university, but also there’s more to it than just the academic aspect. The college itself is a very aesthetic building and also a lot of extra curricular activities and clubs such as sports are available and are very competitive. The best part of studying at New College was the huge diversity that they have. I’ve made friends that are literally from the other side of the planet. Everyone is very supportive and friendly. A lot of memories were made even though our time was cut short. Choosing New College Bradford for my A levels was one of the best decisions I have ever made. What are you doing now and what career plans? I have applied for civil engineering at university and plan on studying for 3 years and one year of industry. The career path I want is to become an engineer and help design and bring fantasy to reality.

Sophie Baker Former High School - Bradford Forster Academy What subjects are you studying at New College? Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths What is it like studying at New College? New College is a fantastic place to study. You’re encouraged to always perform at your best and have the perfect balance between in lesson teaching and independent study. The teachers are extremely accommodating and provide a very educational and enjoyable learning experience. What are you doing now and what career plans? I’m currently studying for end of year Cedar exams and working towards a medicine application, completing virtual work experiences and about to begin volunteering.

Viliam Reis Former High School - St. Benedict’s What subjects are you studying at New College? A-Level Politics, WJEC Criminology, BTEC Applied Law What is it like studying at New College? Studying at New College is such a different environment. The staff and tutors help you grow as a person, and better yourself even more. The teaching is excellent and I feel fully supported not only by my tutor and current teachers but other staff at the college as well. I firmly believe that if it was not for the support system and quality of teaching (a strength of the college), I most definitely would not be in the position that I am today, with 5 university offers. I have every reason to thank New College Bradford. What are you doing now and what career plans? Currently I am preparing for my exams, which will form the base of evidence needed for TAGs. After college I have decided to go into higher education and study Fashion Design BA with a year abroad at Sheffield Hallam University.

Naimah Shakeel Former High School - Laisterdyke Leadership Academy What subjects are you studying at New College? A-level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology What is it like studying at New College? At New College, there are plenty of courses to choose, from the sciences to performing arts, complementing a variety of different career paths. Alongside the academic curriculum, there are numerous extra-curricular activities you can participate in, including sports clubs e.g., football and basketball. There are also enrichments such as The Duke of Edinburgh award, Extended Project Qualification and debating, all of which can contribute as a valuable part of your UCAS applications. I joined the debating society in year 12 and had the opportunity to participate in debating competitions which helped to develop my communication and team-work skills. My teachers really encouraged me to aim high and achieve the best possible grades. The tutors are always available to help; my Progress Tutor helped me with arranging work experience placements. From providing valuable careers advice to helping you create CVs there is really nothing your tutors can’t help you with! Studying at New College will provide you with endless opportunities, with supportive teachers to help you on your journeys to your dream career. What are you doing now and what career plans? I have just finished my A-levels in year 13 and I am going to take a gap year and apply for Dentistry. During my year out, I intend on getting some work experience at dental practices and a part-time job with the help of my tutorial tutor, as an alumna. Furthermore, I am very excited to have a break from studies, to spend more time on my hobbies such as henna and knitting. I am hoping that my gap year will provide me with more experience of working in the real world, which will ultimately prepare me for university.

FAQS

What if I change my mind about my subject choices? Not a problem. Just let us know by emailing studentservices@nclt.ac.uk by Friday 9 July. You can also change subjects when you come to enrol. Changing subjects will obviously depend on there being space available on the course, and your achieving the subject entry requirements. What if I don’t get the grades I need? Don’t panic! We offer a huge number of courses all with different entry requirements, so if things don’t go quite to plan we’ll explore all of the other options that are available to you at your enrolment. What if I haven’t done the Summer Independent Learning? The SIL is a requirement for all courses and MUST be completed before the start of term. It will be the basis of your first assessment and it will tell us how committed you are to studying with us. Any incomplete work will be expected to be done within a very short deadline and you will have given a poor first impression. If I change my mind about courses, what happens to the Summer Independent Learning? You will need to complete the SIL for the courses that you enrol on before the start of term in September. If you are undecided between 2 courses, we strongly recommend that you complete the work for both courses. This will help you to decide which you prefer and will also mean that you are ready in time for the start of term. What if I’ve also applied to my school sixth form? That’s no problem. Remember that you are free to apply to as many places as you like and you don’t have to make your final decision until after your GCSE results, when you officially enrol. At this stage, any places you accept are simply provisional (and you can accept places at more than just one place, for the time being).
