Thank you for your enhanced support. Protecting N.C.’s New Rural Cash Crop
Teaching Digital Literacy On the Farm
North Carolina is America’s largest producer of sweet potatoes, but the crop’s true potential for profit is being threatened by the guava root-knot nematode, an invasive and highly aggressive pest. USDA-NIFA’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) has awarded a $5M grant to NC State researchers to keep the parasitic worms in check. The project will address the threat using some of the transdisciplinary research efforts envisioned through the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative to help ensure farmers’ income grows as they meet growing consumer demands for sweet potatoes. go.ncsu.edu/Rural-Cash-Crop
At the start of 2022, nearly 1.1 million North Carolina households (27% of the state) lacked access to highspeed internet. Federal and state grants are helping to bring the number down, but that’s only part of the solution. In 2021, Extension created a new Broadband Access and Education Coordinator role to lead digital literacy efforts in rural communities, which encompasses new, cutting-edge technology and lessons in productivity tools. Extension is helping farmers bridge the digital divide and innovate their operations. go.ncsu.edu/TeachingDigitalLiteracy
NC Farm School Is In Session
Exporting Manure for Money Through a new USDA-NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant, NC State Extension and research specialists are partnering with the N.C. Foundation for Soil & Water Conservation and Phinite Inc. on a low-cost method to dry swine sludge for easy transport and fertilizer blending. If successful, the project could turn a nagging concern into a potential revenue source for producers. go.ncsu.edu/ManureforMoney
Extension’s NC Farm School takes a unique entrepreneurial approach to help new and established farmers use their land for sustainable agribusinesses. In 2021, the program continued to make good on its mission to increase the number of successful farms in the state. Moving forward, Extension aims to establish local farm school programs in each of its five districts, providing opportunities for all North Carolinians, from recent college graduates to military veterans, to develop prosperous agricultural ventures. go.ncsu.edu/FarmSchoolinSession
Opening the Doors to a Space for Collaboration and Innovation The NC State University Plant Sciences Buiding opens in April 2022. Located on NC State’s Centennial Campus, the facility features the latest innovations in design and build to support interdisciplinary team-based plant sciences. The NC State Plant Sciences Building is an integral piece of the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative, cultivating relationships and collaborations between academia, industry, government and growers to solve complex grand challenges in agriculture and society. go.ncsu.edu/NCPSI cals.ncsu.edu

Agriculture and Agribusiness NORTH CAROLINA’S NUMBER ONE INDUSTRY Agriculture and agribusiness – food, fiber, and forestry – account for one-sixth of the state’s income and employment. Over 16 percent, or $95.9 billion of the $592 billion gross state product, is contributed by food, fiber, and forestry industries. These industries account for over 789,000 of the state’s 4.5 million employees. The following are the value-added incomes derived from the state’s agricultural and agribusiness sector in 2019.

789,000, or 17.5 percent of North Carolina’s 4.5 million employees work in agriculture and agribusiness. Value-Added Income The figures reflect value-added income for 2019. At the farm level, value-added is sales. At the manufacturing, wholesale and retail levels, value-added does not include the value of non-North Carolina produced inputs, and value-added avoids the multiple counting of a product used several times in the production chain.
