FALL 2018 COURSE CATALOG

Fall is a Time for Chance and Change Have you ever created something without having a real plan for how it might turn out? If so, you may have experienced the process that the great composer and artist, John Cage, pioneered and coined, indeterminacy – a process by which some aspects of the work or performance are left completely open to chance without predetermined outcomes. This fall, the Crafts Center will have the unique opportunity to work with renowned artist, Ray Kass, who worked closely with John Cage and other artists, including photographer, Sally Mann, and dance choreographer, Merce Cunningham. Ray will be leading a series of “indeterminate” workshops here at the Crafts Center, November 8-11th. We are thrilled to collaborate with the Gregg Museum, along with the Theatre program, to produce works that coincide with the museum’s exhibition of Kass’s work in the fall. The Crafts Center will exhibit the results of some of these workshops in the spring of 2019. By now you’ve probably heard a lot about PostSecret. We have gathered literally hundreds of cards from all over campus, which

Revisiting Mountain Lake

A Unique Opportunity to Work in the Spirit of Master Contemporary Artists

The Crafts Center is honored and excited to present a series of special workshops and events in collaboration with the Gregg Museum. The Gregg will feature an exhibition of modern art curated by renowned artist Ray Kass and art historian Howard Risatti. Kass is the founder and director of the Mountain Lake Workshops – a community-based artist retreat located in the beautiful Appalachian region around Mountain Lake in southwest Virginia– that focused on experimental, interdisciplinary projects that encompassed aspects of contemporary art, Appalachian culture, and social and technological research.

This is a significant

At Mountain Lake, Kass collaborated with major twentieth century artists, including John Cage, Merce Cunningham, M.C. Richards, and Sally Mann, who often worked in the vein of “indeterminacy,” a term coined by John Cage to describe a process by which artists rely on chance and trust in the multiple possibilities of happy accidents concentrating on attaining predetermined outcomes. The approach is reminiscent of those used by Black Mountain artists who migrated to North Carolina’s famous Black Mountain College and based much of their work on such experimental processes, often eschewing the commercialism of modern art. And no wonder, since many of the Mountain Lake artists had attended Black Mountain.

opportunity for the Crafts Center. Participants will work directly with Ray Kass in the spirit of the Mountain Lake processes that result in very rare, chance effects.

DANCERS PERFORMING IN FRONT OF A “STEP PAINTING”

On August 23, the Gregg Museum will open an exhibition featuring rarely-before-exhibited works by Kass, Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Mann, as well as other artists as diverse as James De La Vega, Jiro Okura, Mierle Ukeles, and the Reverend Howard Finster. In conjunction with this exhibition, Kass will lead a series of collaborative, hands-on, experimental workshops at the Crafts Center the week of November 8-11. The first of these will be “smoke paintings” created by igniting piles of burning straw and other natural elements on large sheets of paper and then smothering the flames between sheets of Masonite. In the spirit of Mountain Lake, the results will be “indeterminate”and the prints will then be used in subsequent workshops.

KASS’S STUDENTS WORKING ON “BREATHING LINES” PAINTINGS

During the run of the exhibition, students will be able to immerse themselves in other acts of indeterminacy through programs and workshops presented by the Crafts Center, the Dance Program, and the Gregg Museum itself. This is a significant opportunity for the Crafts Center, since participants will have the opportunity to work directly with Ray Kass and learn processes that result in very rare, chance effects. The Center will exhibit the results alongside the actual tools and materials that John Cage used to create his own artwork. Ray Kass will be in residence at the Crafts Center November 8-11th. Workshops will be open to students, members and instructors. Many of the workshop events will be open for observation. Please check our website for details. A “BREATHING LINES” PAINTING

These paintings, for example, might then be used as base sheets for a series called “Breathing Lines,” in which consecutive rows painted on sheets of paper, upon which sticks and stones have been randomly placed, create negative space patterns wherever the brush skips over them. Although the workshop may evoke the quiet, meditative manner of traditional Asian brush and ink painting, the process will not require previous training. The sheets will be subsequently mounted in the Asian style on another piece of mulberry paper and framed.

The Mountain Lake classes and exhibitions represent a collaboration between the Gregg Museum, the ARTS NC State Dance Program and the Crafts Center.

Frank Warren’s PostSecret Live! Presented in partnership with NC State LIVE Frank Warren is the most trusted stranger in America. He is the creator of The PostSecret Project – a collection of 1,000,000+ artful secrets that have been mailed to his home on postcards, anonymously. The PostSecret website has become a phenomenon in itself, earning over 700 million views, and making it the world’s largest advertisement-free blog. In collaboration with NC State LIVE, Frank will join us for a lively lecture based on his popular TED talk. Come see the postcards that were banned from his six best-selling PostSecret books. Hear the inspiring stories behind the secrets. Listen to some of Frank’s favorite secrets...and share your own. Since the fall 2017 semester, the Crafts Center has been collecting PostSecretU postcards from across campus and around the community as part of what we have subtitled, “PackSecrets.” These cards reflect everything from humor to despair – an index of what is going in the hearts and minds of folks right here on campus. The result is a modular installation of campus-generated secret cards that will be exhibited in the Crafts Center gallery, on view through fall of 2018. At times hilarious and heartbreaking, the secrets reflect complex issues that many of us struggle with: intimacy, trust, meaning, humor, and desire. This talk is scheduled as part of National Suicide Awareness Month. Need to talk? The NC State Counseling Center will be on hand in the lobby after the event and is available at 919.515.2423

BOOK SIGNING WITH FRANK WARREN Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Frank and have him sign one of his PostSecret books, which will be available for purchase in the lobby before and after his presentation!

In the process of beginning the PostSecret project, we learned that one of our very own NC State students, Pablo Campos, works with Frank Warren as part of the Active Minds Speakers Bureau. Pablo is a Caldwell Fellow as well as a national speaker for Active Minds. Pablo was one of a team of Caldwell Fellows that launched the #PackSecrets campus-wide initiative. Pablo’s story is one of survival. As a suicide survivor, he now shares his experiences with others – how he engaged in increasingly risky behaviors and polysubstance abuse, which led to an attempt to take his own life during his senior year of high school. Today, with a clear diagnosis and a treatment plan, Pablo has begun his road to recovery. He talks about how stigma, cultural norms, and a lack of education affected him and how through help seeking, education, and a strong support network he has grown from being his own worst enemy to a powerful participant in his recovery. He shares his story to encourage others to seek help, build peer support and to create a healthier sense of community. Pablo will be our guest speaker at the opening reception of the PostSecret exhibition on September 19th. He will also open for Frank Warren before his presentation on the evening of September 20th.

How I Made This: Gretchen Quinn, Master Potter and Marina Bosetti Ceramic Artist September 28th 7pm Gretchen Quinn specializes in making functional ceramics with a clean modern feel. The inspiration for her work comes from a purely personal place – she simply makes what she would like to have and use in her own home. Much of Gretchen’s inspiration derives from her love of Danish Modern and Shaker designs. The guiding principles of these styles of work is simplicity, utility and honesty, which is reflected in Gretchen’s use of clean lines, textures and glazes. All of Gretchen’s pieces are handmade out of a beautiful dark brown stoneware clay and glazed in glossy white. Her pots are decorated with a variety of hand carved patterns that emerge after the glaze firing. Gretchen works out of her Raleigh studio and she teaches pottery at the Crafts Center. Her work will be on sale at the Craft Center’s annual Crafts Fair on November 17th.

instruction and vibrance to the Center’s programming. All presentations are FREE and open to the public.

Marina Bosetti developed a wax-resist glaze technique through trial and error, only to find out it had a time-honored history going back to the 14th Century, called “cuerda seca.” Influenced by both the Art and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau, she combines the aesthetics and function of one with the linear designs and flowing curves of the other to create contemporary designs that can be used in today’s homes as well as in traditional bungalows. Bosetti Art Tiles sells to both local and out-of-state customers, providing custom tile installations for murals, backsplashes, and fireplace surrounds as well as wall art. Color samples are available by mail to aid consumers shopping for field tile and counter tops. Photos or architectural plans are encouraged as part of the design process. Tiles can be used indoors or out. Marina draws her image onto the clay before going over it with a liner brush and wax resist. She then fills a slip trailer with glaze directing it into the waxed area before using a paintbrush to move the glaze to the wax line. This thick application of glaze, after firing, creates a raised edge above the surface of the tile. That edge becomes a faux grout line, allowing glaze to pool around it, which coincidentally mimics the look of mosaic. Marina works out of her Raleigh studio and she teaches at the Crafts Center. Her work will be on sale at the Craft Center’s annual Crafts Fair on November 17th.

Guitar Man

Student, Sam Mayes, Embodies the “Full Circle” Tradition of Learning, Making and Entrepreneurialism at the Crafts Center

BY T. MARK BENTLEY

Before I met Sam Mayes, I had seen a few pictures of the guitar that catalyzed our interview– a dark wood-grained hollow body electric with intricate pearl inlays. The six-string bellowed with rugged utilitarian artistry and retro-modern fashion sense. So, when Mayes pulled up and parked his 1988 Chevy Blazer in front of the wood shop at the Crafts Center, he seemed quite at home. Mayes has recently built and sold a guitar that he made entirely by hand. It was inspired by the “Prog-Metal” genre [which I, admittedly, was not previously familiar with]. A quick Google search revealed a kind of musical rabbit hole requiring that every detail of the guitar be custom work. The blocky pearl inlays were inspired by those found on high-end Gibson® guitars; the veneer was from Mayes’ personal stash dating back to his great, great uncle; the neck and fret board weren’t made from a single piece of wood but rather segmented from multiple types of wood; the F-holes were specifically cut in a way that would add strength against the curvature of the wood – and the list goes on. Sam Mayes learned woodworking from his father and first started building guitars at age 11 when his parents gave him a book on guitar building for Christmas. Years later, when he became a student at State, he discovered the Crafts Center and quickly became a regular user in the wood shop. There, he taught a “Cigar Box Guitar Class,” where students learned to build very rudimentary guitars out of, well… cigar boxes.

SAM MAYES: GUITAR WORK IN PROGRESS

“The Crafts Center in some ways seems more like a process than place. There seems to a communal and collaborative spirit built into the walls.” SAM MAYES IN THE CRAFTS CENTER WOOD SHOP

The experience gave him a new perspective on the building of guitars as he was challenged to translate woodworking concepts and skills that had been ingrained [no pun intended!] in him since he was a child. “The Crafts Center in some ways seems more like a process than place. There seems to be a communal and collaborative spirit built into the walls.” Despite having obvious pride in his work, Sam seemed hesitant to imply that the project was a solo venture. “Working one-on-one with the customer is what I’m all about,” Mayes said. The logo might be on the headstock, but Sam seems to connect most deeply with process – a process that the Crafts Center happily facilitates.

“The Crafts Center has given me an opportunity and a place for the expression of my hobbies, as well as a place where I can share my experiences from the last 13 years with other people. You have all sorts of skill levels here: someone who’s been doing it for forty or fifty years right next to someone who is creating for the first time. It’s been a place where I can explore my entrepreneurship side. I wouldn’t have been able to complete that guitar to sell, without access to this place.” – Sam Mayes

Give to the Crafts Center Your gift to the NC State Crafts Center plays an essential role in providing arts education to all of NC State’s students and to the greater Triangle community. We offer different ways to support the Crafts Center so you can choose the one that’s best for you. Other personalized opportunities, such as endowments and facilities naming opportunities are also possibilities.

Ways to Give CASH GIFTS Cash gifts are the simplest for a donor to value for tax purposes. You can make a gift today online, by phone, in person or by mail. An unrestricted donation to the Crafts Center Enhancement Fund goes to helping maintain the facilities and equipment in each studio. For example, in the woodshop, we recently replaced some older equipment with new machines that have safety stops, which has saved us replacement blade costs – and fingers! The Crafts Center has a vast number of machines that are costly to maintain. Your contribution keeps everything running efficiently so our students and patrons can concentrate on their amazing creations.
