Summer Is the Time for Reconnecting With Creativity One of the joys of being here at the Crafts Center is seeing progress in all directions. Something is always new and refresh and everyone here is brimming with creativity. It inspires me and challenges me to find new directions in my own work. Whether you’re an engineer or a visual studies student, the summer sessions provide that rare span of time to simply “get off the grid” and explore new avenues for creative expression. What could be more satisfying than taking a leap and signing up to learn something you’ve never done before? The Crafts Center is the perfect place to let your inner creative nature soar. This summer, we’re offering a record-setting number of classes with new media offerings such as screen printing, papermaking, and calligraphy/lettering in addition to more specialty classes.
The summer sessions provide that rare span of time to simply “get off the grid” and explore new avenues for creative expression.
Speaking of creative expression...PostSecret is in full swing on campus and there is a lot of excitement as we gather cards for installations. We will welcome founder, Frank Warren, to campus on the evening of September 20th. If you’re not familiar with PostSecret, please visit the website at postsecret.com to learn more. Then use the back cover to fill out your secret card! It’s hard to think of the Crafts Fair as the weather warms, but when it comes to preparing work to sell, the months go by quickly. The NC State Crafts Center: Make It Here! There’s a very little known fact about the Crafts Center at NC State: it is one of the largest university crafts centers in the nation. With over 20,000 square feet of facilities space, the Center is optimized for on–site, hands–on education to students of all ages. The Center is supported primarily by NC State student fees as a part of the University’s Division of Academic and Student Affairs and is one of six programs comprising Arts NC State.
The Crafts Center’s mission is to provide hands–on, immersive, life–long learning skills to NC State students, faculty and staff, affiliates, alumni and the general public to support research, enhance critical thinking through creativity, and strengthen personal and professional development. Established around 1954, the Center remains a thriving and significant part of campus and community life. Students and patrons from all disciplines, backgrounds, skillsets, and interests find a welcoming, supportive and creative home here. The cover for this summer’s catalog was done by Crafts Center Mixed Media Instructor, Laura Azzi. Laura teaches watercolor at the Center and she has been a vendor at the Annual Holiday Crafts Fair for the past nine years.
Registration and Membership The Crafts Center is primarily funded by NC State University student fees and community participation. The programs and facilities are available to everyone with the following qualifications: must be 18 or older or current NC State student and must have health insurance. Crafts Center classes are extra–curricular, non–credit classes.

Cancellations
Most of our classes fill quickly so there is often a wait list. Late notice cancellations require considerable processing and labor to try and fill the reserved seat. Therefore, cancellations under 5 days are not able to be refunded unless we can fill the space. • If cancellation occurs 10 or more days prior to the start of a class, a 75% refund of payment will be issued; 25% of payment is assessed for processing charge.
Membership: Join the Crafts Center!
Studio memberships are available for purchase by those not taking a class, provided they have sufficient experience and knowledge to work independently in the studio. First–time users must complete an orientation before purchasing a membership. Membership to the Crafts Center entitles members full access to special events and their studio of choice during open hours and when a class is not in session. [The Center’s schedule runs on the official NC State University schedule.]

Classes are available in varying session lengths as an ongoing study in a specific studio. For classes that are 15 hours and over, students will have access to the studio in which they are enrolled for the duration of the semester. For classes less than 15 hours, students will have access to the studio during regular class hours and have the option to sign up for other classes and/or purchase a membership. Instructor: Jennifer Siegel Get in our studio for a three–day weekend of throwing on a very large scale! We will be working through the crafting stages of large vessels; techniques for centering 20 pounds of clay, base turning, coiling, paddling, drying, forming and finishing. Participants in the workshop should be fully capable of lifting 50 pounds, have experience centering 10+ pounds of clay, and a full weekend to commit to this project. Students will end the semester with a fully fired, fifty pound pot-ofpride! Class fee includes two 25 lb. bags of clay [which includes firing] and use of studio tools needed during class. Instructor: Sherry Nicholson Not quite centered yet and need a little more practice before moving on to the next level? Continuing Wheel is a refresher course of basic pottery wheel skills: centering, raising walls, trimming, finishing and glazing. Projects include refining skills of pulling handles for mugs, turning matching bowls and small plates. A wonderful class for novice potters as well as veteran throwers in need of more tips and tricks on how to master basic skills. Pinching, coiling, soft and hard slab construction and extruding are the main methods of hand–building this beginner level class introduces. Students will create functional as well as sculptural forms, such as cups, mugs, bowls and lidded boxes. Surface decoration through slips, stains, and wax, as well as glazing, will be a significant aspect of this class. Studio time outside of class is strongly suggested to build skills as well as finish class projects. Beginners to the craft will explore twill patterns and other weaving techniques before completing a woven scarf. A N N E W I L L S O N describes it as “a nest of a magical bird.” Magic certainly seems to describe both the process and outcome of her recent installation, Nesting Instincts. Willson led her Random Weave class through the process of creating a wall installation for the entryway of the Crafts Center. The class, comprised of Jim Ortiz, Shauna Ortiz, and Betsy Randall-Schadel, created a magnificent “nest” of reed and vines.
with the reed on one end of the installation, her decisions would affect Jim’s and Betsy’s more open work on the other end, as the line of the reed inevitably made its way from one end of the work to the other.”
It all started with a rather unusual “commission” by Director, Carol Fountain Nix, who asked Willson to consider creating an installation in the Crafts Center entryway as part of her Random Weave class. “I want our visitors to know they are entering a special creative space and the class installation accomplishes that beautifully,” Nix said. “It was also great for students to be exposed to creating a piece of highly visible art.”
“Magic” also describes the serendipitous mixture of personal expression, collaborative nuance, space, and light that make Nesting Instincts true to materials and true to the space.
The spiraling vine at the top of the piece serves as “the point of departure” for the randomly woven reeds. Anne describes the collaborative creation of Nesting Instincts as a “very organic and almost symbiotic relationship.” “For example,” she explained, “If Shauna expressed herself with tight turns

“I really like the directness of working Crafts Center,” Anne said, “You walk in and the space is so direct and accessible, with an emphasis on artistic integrity. Want to take your basic knowledge of glass bead making to the next level? Then this is the class for you. Each week you will learn a new technique you can use to make beads with more intricate designs. You will learn to make complex murrini, flower cain, work in the middle of the mandrel, and encase beads without distorting the designs on the bead. Learn to use bead shapers and presses. If you have a bead press or mold that you have not mastered bring it to class and learn to use it. Supplies included. Make a unique beaded pin using a large focal bead surrounded by smaller beads. No pre–planning is necessary. The process is impromptu using the beads and colors you choose. The technique is easy to learn and you can use it to create other jewelry – neckpieces, bracelets, or embellished clothing. It can become addictive! Needle, thread, foundation and a variety of beads are all that is required. All supplies provided by instructor. Students will continue building skills by using basic metalsmithing techniques while learning to bezel set a stone and make hollow forms using soldering and forming techniques. Students will learn to saw, file, texture, rivet, and solder using sheet metal and wire in this basic techniques class. Suitable for beginners as well as more advanced metalsmiths. Hammer time! Forge and fold form unique three–dimensional sculptures using only a hammer. Corrugation is a technique for adding ripples as a design element. The techniques you learn can be applied to copper, with a big hammer, to create interesting lawn ornaments, or to silver, with a smaller hammer, to create unique jewelry. We will explore ways to cast silver objects using water, frozen peas, coffee beans, rock salt, and broom straw. We will also explore charcoal casting techniques. SETTING IRREGULAR SHAPED OBJECTS m b Instructor: Leigh Griffin Expand your metalsmithing skills and learn to set irregular shaped objects, including cabochons. Not all cabochons [cabs] are round or oval. Techniques learned can easily be applied to setting other objects with flat backs. Work with sterling and fine silver to make prong and/or bezel settings for stones and objects. Bezel wire can be wrapped around the cabochon, or other flat backed object, soldered to sheet silver, and turned into a pendant, or silver wire can be used to create a simple prong setting. Expand your skills and work with silver to make custom settings. Students should supply their own flat–back cabochon or object to be set; round or oval practice cabochons will be available for purchase. Explore finishing your cab as a pendant or a ring. Instructor: Sarah Tector Rings unite! Create your own spinner ring using a forming technique known as anticlastic raising. In this process an outer band is formed in such a way to creatively “capture” one or more moving rings. Learn to size, shape and solder sheet metal and wire into rings. Basic soldering, forging, and forming techniques will be covered. Ample silver and copper will be provided to complete one spinner ring. This workshop is suited for all skill levels. This class is open to students who have prior experience in silkscreen or screen printing and wish to further their knowledge. You will produce two to three prints by the end of the class. Reinforce your skills by setting up individual projects and working through complicated color registration and layers. Learn about the process and history of silkscreen printing both as an expressive and as a graphic art form. Hand–drawn, photographic, photocopied and digital color separation techniques will be explored. The class will focus on individual projects that students are interested in. Use water based inks to print on various materials such as paper, fabric, glass, metal and wood and explore making individual prints as well as editions. This class will explore the creation of original books in various methods and techniques, with the focus on traditional and non–traditional. We will also focus on how the book format has been used in history to convey information to the masses. Students will learn the importance of creating a “Dummy” book, and proper gluing techniques using archival glues and boards. No prior experience is needed. # PackSecrets is in full swing all across campus and we’d like to invite you to participate! The Crafts Center is leading a campus – wide project called #PackSecrets based on the infamous, PostSecret.com project, started by Frank Warren in 2004. The goal is to gather as many secret cards as possible. These will be featured in an early fall exhibition leading up to Warren’s talk and booksigning on September 20th. We invite you to participate by filling out the back page of this catalog with YOUR secret and sending it in to the Crafts Center. You may also drop it by or put it in any one of the #PackSecrets drop boxes on campus. ALL CARDS ARE ANONYMOUS. The cards are already pouring in, reflecting an array of topics with astonishingly honest, humorous, tragic and heartwarming secret notes. Students from many different organizations have come to the Center to paint boxes and participate in #PackSecrets events and students from Arts Village produced a “devised theatre” performance based on content from some of the cards. A project of this magnitude would not be complete without bringing founder, Frank Warren,

MAKING THE LONGBOARD SKATEBOARD DECK m Instructor: Braden Walker
For every connection in wood, a joint is carefully chosen and executed in order to maximize function and visual beauty. In this class, students will learn to lay out, cut, and fit a variety of joints used in furniture making. Hand–cut joinery rooted in both Asian and European cultures will be explored. Emphasis will be on process rather than the completion of a project. You will also learn to sharpen your own chisels, planes, and irons. Supplies included. No experience needed. Intensely hands–on! Make a custom–sized longboard skateboard you can ride and enjoy for years. Students will learn to laminate plys of Baltic birch into the necessary complex curves. The form will then be cut with the band saw, drilled, routed and sanded to final shape. After completing the introductory woodworking class, are you eager to get started on your next woodworking project? From a plan and materials of your own choosing, discussion on the first night is aimed at getting you going. From there, this class will be all hands–on, requiring possible time outside of class to complete your project. Expect to spend around $50 – $125 for materials, depending on choice of project and wood used. Students furnish own materials based upon project selected. SCROLL SAW PROJECTS m Instructor: Maria Lai Puzzles, portraiture, and layer–built imagery; all of these can be created out of colorful woods with the help of the scroll saw. Gain confidence in scroll sawing as you work to complete a basic project. Once the machine is mastered, you will explore more advanced techniques, work with more advanced patterns, and even create imagery of your own design. WHAT DEFINES A CHAIR? J b Instructor: Zach Gregory This class is centered around pushing the boundaries of what furniture and woodworking can look like and function as. Breaking away from traditional plans, we will dive into sculptural forms and contemporary ideas of making furniture based on personal plans and ideation. Please bring a rough set of plans to first class along with an open mind and willingness to experiment and have fun. Plan to spend around $75 – $200 depending on choice of project and wood used. In this introductory class, students will have the opportunity to explore the very different experiences found in turning the side grain of a spindle and the end grain found in making a bowl. Whether a competitive racer or a casual rider, this class will provide you with the necessary skills to replace/repair flats, lubricate drive–trains, tune brakes and derailleurs, true wheels, and much more. Please bring your bike. [Participating NC State students will receive access to the repair facility for their entire college career!]
COFFEE BAG TOTE [Workshop] m Instructor: Gina Fry We’re bringing this back as a one – day workshop! Bring on the summer by making a special, one-of-a -kind tote bag from geniune, imported coffee bean bags! This workshop will cover sewing, pattern–making and constructing a 17” lined, burlap bag and adding lush leather handles with tooled hardware. Students can bring their own lining [1 yard fabric of choice] and we will have some on hand. Burlap coffee bean bags [random designs] leather and hardware are included in class fee. CONCRETE GARDEN ART [Workshop] m Instructor: Kathy Driggers Want to put some art in your garden? In this workshop, you will work with concrete to build a birdbath with embedded objects. You will learn basic concrete techniques of sand casting and simple armature building to create a lovely outdoor sculpture. Our birdbath can be embedded with found objects, glass, or high–fired pottery. A $30 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class. Students will bring their own leather work gloves, a cheap plastic dishpan, and a spray bottle. You are encouraged to bring your own objects for embedding. Friday. HANDMADE NATURAL BODY CARE: LOTIONS, SOAPS AND LIP BALM [Workshop] m Instructor: Angel Cruz Make your own body care products in a casual and fun setting, including organic lip balm, body butter, Castile soap and goat’s milk soap! You will be able to take home plenty of products to try, as well as enough for gifts for family and friends. Most supplies included. Students need to bring their own 4– to 6–quart stainless steel pot to melt ingredients in and a few additional items; a supply list will be furnished following registration.

INTRODUCING THE
Master Craft Program The Crafts Center is proud to announce its new Master Craft Program. This program is designed for students who have a goal and desire to explore their craft on a deeper level. It is an ongoing study designed to provide students with support and resources outside of the standard class experience in order to broaden their skillsets towards reaching a master level of competency and knowledge. Each program will be customized for the specified art medium and level of study. The Calligraphy Program is our inaugural offering and will be followed by studies in additional media.
Master Class in Calligraphy/Lettering The class will be directed by the Director of the Crafts Center, Carol Fountain Nix. Additional instructors may be brought in to conduct sessions as well. Hands–on instruction and personal attention are part of this study. • Beginning Wednesday, May 16, class will meet every other Wednesday ending on July 25 from 6pm until 8 pm.[resuming in fall semester]. • Students will be expected to bring their own supplies while some additional supplies will be available for sale or provided at no cost as a perk for the class. • Students will be expected to make the commitment to attend the class and practice regularly. • This type of instruction is progressive. The instructor will monitor improvement and provide students with as many resources as possible to enable them to reach successful outcomes. Students will be expected to practice on their own in between sessions and demonstrate progress in each class session. • The maximum class size is limited to eight students to optimize for individual attention and consultation.

Meet the Crafts Center administrative staff and studio managers who make it all happen! CAROL FOUNTAIN NIX, DIRECTOR Carol directs the overall vision of the Crafts Center. She received her MA from the NC State College of Design and eventually taught there as the Associate Professor of the Practice, where she lead multi-disciplinary professional practices courses in interactive media. Carol has an extensive background as an entrepreneur and retail product designer, having owned her own business for over 20 years. She is a practicing artist, calligrapher and mixed media painter. Carol teaches classes in calligraphy and lettering arts at the Center and internationally. Please visit: carolfountainnix.com to view some of Carol’s work. JO ELLEN WESTMORELAND, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Jo Ellen believes that finding creativity can improve your quality of life. It is something she knows to be true, having taught clay classes at the Crafts Center for over a decade. Jo Ellen oversees the glass, lapidary, jewelry, fibers and art – on – paper studios and manages the Center’s front desk. Her devotion to learning over the years has helped her nurture many wonderful friendships and memories both as a teacher and crafts lover. With pottery and needlework at the top of the list, Jo Ellen has a variety of skills to share with NC State students and her local community of over 35 years. JENNIFER SIEGEL, CLAY STUDIO MANAGER Jennifer’s contagious enthusiasm for “everything clay” started in 2003 when she began studying ceramics at Anderson University in South Carolina. Jennifer has served as the Clay Studio Manager since August of 2012. She has worked extensively to develop the studio’s class offerings and enhance the studio’s facilities. Jennifer has become a master of her craft, exhibiting in galleries throughout the area with her personable, eccentric style of creating. ZACHARY GREGORY, WOODSHOP MANAGER As a Raleigh native, Zach graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2014 where he gained knowledge in woodworking, metalworking, casting and fabrication. Zach also worked in many shops, galleries, and museums and began doing commissioned work for clients. Zach took the position of Wood Studio Manager in 2014, which brought him back to North Carolina. He has been passionately working on improvements to the shop and fulfilling the visionary mission of the Crafts Center by adding new courses and initiatives that engage students. She was a founding member of the Arts Village in 2007 and began working at the Crafts Center as a student front desk attendant in 2009. Katy’s energetic, “can – do” attitude and the fact that she actually enjoys creative problem – solving is a real asset to the Crafts Center. Katy teaches black and white photography and she also serves as a volunteer coach for the NC State women’s rugby club.

Give to the Crafts Center Your gift to the NC State Crafts Center plays an essential role in providing arts education to all of NC State’s students and to the greater Triangle community. We offer different ways to support the Crafts Center so you can choose the one that’s best for you. Ways to Give CASH GIFTS Cash gifts are the simplest for a donor to value for tax purposes. You can make a gift today online, by phone, in person or by mail. An unrestricted donation to the Crafts Center Enhancement Fund goes to helping maintain the facilities and equipment in each studio. For example, in the woodshop, we recently replaced some older equipment with new machines that have safety stops, which has saved us replacement blade costs – and fingers! The Crafts Center has a vast number of machines that are costly to maintain. Your contribution keeps everything running efficiently so our students and patrons can concentrate on their amazing creations.

Thanks to the generous support of the Bailey Endowment, a local family foundation, the Crafts Center recently purchased a new pottery wheel (pictured above) and replaced numerous shelves in the kiln.
