TYPES OF AID GRADUATE SCHOOL DIVERSITY ENHANCEMENT GRANT PROGRAM Diversity is an inclusive collection of individuals and groups who bring varied human characteristics, backgrounds, interests and points of view to enrich the university community. The overarching goal of having a diverse university community is to better educate our students to be active, informed, productive participants in a pluralistic society and interdependent world. The purpose of the UNC Campus Scholarship Program and the Diversity Graduate Assistance Grant programs is to promote diversity at the graduate level at North Carolina State University.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships for DVM students are available on a limited basis through funds made possible by gifts from private benefactors as well as group donations. Scholarships are awarded by the Faculty Scholarship Committee based on demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA) and academic achievement. In addition, some scholarships may require additional criteria established by the scholarship’s donor, such as interest in a particular species or type of veterinary practice, community and volunteer involvement, or student activities.

UNSUBSIDIZED LOANS If your cost of attendance is not met by other aid, you are eligible for a Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan. The maximum loan limit for a DVM student is $40,500. DVM students may borrow up to the loan limit or the cost of attendance, whichever is less. if you accept the Unsubsidized Loan, interest will accrue while you are enrolled. You are not required to make payments on the loan as long as you remain enrolled at least half time.

PLUS LOANS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan is a Federal loan program which allows Graduate and Professional students to borrow a low interest federally backed student loan when Federal Direct Loan eligibility has been exhausted. The Graduate PLUS Loan can be used to pay for the total cost of attendance minus any financial aid you’ve already been awarded. Eligibility for the Graduate PLUS Loan is largely dependent on the borrower’s credit rating and history. There is no form to submit to NC State; students should go to https://StudentLoans.gov to complete the PLUS Request Process/Master Promissory Note and Entrance Loan Counseling.

RESIDENCY FOR TUITION PURPOSES Admitted non-resident DVM students can apply for in-state tuition after completing their first year in the DVM program. More information about the requirements can be found online at: https://grad.ncsu.edu/admissions/residency/

SUPPORT At NC State, our scholarship support is an important way to alleviate the economic burden of the cost of education. In addition, In-state DVM tuition and fees at NC State are the lowest in the nation, and out-of-state students can achieve in-state status after one year. This gives our graduates tremendous opportunity they start their careers.
