Kay Crowder, a member of the Raleigh City Council, claimed she was physically and verbally assaulted by Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane’s husband, Ron McFarlane, during an argument at the Dix Park Master Plan unveiling on Feb. 6. Crowder spoke at the event and thanked some council members but not the mayor, which Ron McFarlane took offense to. Key player in N.C. 9th District election interference probe indicted

9:01 AM | TRAFFIC ACCIDENT Nelson Hall Staff member reported they struck a parked vehicle causing damage.

McCrae Dowless, a political figure under recent scrutiny related to his involvement in the Mark Harris 2018 primary campaign, has been recently indicted. Dowless allegedly took absentee ballots from hundreds of voters across the 9th District and tampered with them, possibly altering the election outcome. He has been charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and illegal possession of an absentee ballot. These charges come a week after the State Board of Elections decided to hold a new 9th District election. Harris led his Democratic opponent Dan McCready by 905 votes, but the board refused to certify results until the allegations against Harris were resolved.

A longtime lawyer to President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen accused the president of repeatedly lying and exposing criminal actions during a hearing before the House Oversight and Reform Committee. Cohen claimed that Trump lied to the public about business interests in Russia during the campaign and told him to not disclose hush money payments. Cohen also directly criticized the president’s character. “He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat,” Cohen stated in his testimony to the committee.

With the 2019 Spring General Election coming up on March 4, Technician spoke with all of the candidates for student senate president, student body treasurer and student body chief justice.

The candidates discussed their experiences, platforms, what they would like to implement and why they deserve your vote.

CANDIDATE FOR STUDENT SENATE PRESIDENT:

Mitchell Smith Moravec

a graduate student in public administration What is your experience?

I joined Student Government in the spring of 2014. I started as a senator with the College of Engineering and basically, for the next four years, did Senate and progressively held leadership roles, all the way to serving as the Senate president for the 97th session. Then this past year, for the 98th, I served in the executive branch. I was the director of student wellness. It was a new position this year, and I absolutely enjoyed it. Ultimately, I decided to go back to the Senate for my last year at NC State and serve again in the role of Student Senate president.

What is your platform?

I am in a unique position of not only getting to serve in this role again, but also having some time since I’ve served in the role.

I’ve seen to some extent how my impact was taken and how another person was able to come into the position, serve and do things differently or do things the same. It allowed me to reflect on my first time and also see how Adam [Schmidt] took on the position and corrected the mistakes I made the first time around.

I definitely want to do more with time management, also with the kind of processes we set up and fixed over the last two sessions, and enjoy the benefits of a fixed system and working forward with that.

What is one thing your predecessor did well?

When I was Senate president, Adam was the pro tempore, which was almost like the vice president of the Senate, and he was also very pro-community. He always inspired senators to work on their own passions, and I definitely saw him continue that trend with his Senate presidency. I think he did a great job of maintaining that community within the Senate and making sure all senators felt empowered to be senators and work on their issues and initiatives.

What is one thing you want to change or implement?

All throughout my time in the Senate and still to this day, I am a big proponent of processes, rules and maintaining the spirit of what our student body documents are. So coming back into this role, I want to be more intentional about the kind of processes we have, like when deadlines are, the process of setting up a meeting, when the agenda goes out and all that great stuff; basically making sure that we are staying on top of that while also being thorough, because if we are producing quality reports and agendas, they act as transition documents and allow for our sessions to be captured and recorded appropriately, so people in the future know exactly what we were doing and why we were doing it.

Why should the student body vote for you?

You should vote for me because you need to vote. Practicing your civic duty and voting in an election in any capacity is very important.

I ask just to invest in me again and also invest in my academic career goals as well.

Being a graduate student in public administration, I really appreciate the nuances of what goes into governance, student governments and maintaining an organizational body. I am very excited to apply my academics to this position.

CANDIDATE FOR STUDENT BODY TREASURER:

Garrison Seitz a first-year studying engineering

What is your experience?

This past year, I have been an engineering senator [and] was on the apportionment committee and student relations committee.

What is your platform?

I am planning to make the position more visible and accessible to everyone. Right now, the general ledger can have way more improvements so people can really understand what’s going on. I think financial communication is really key to this job.

What is one thing your predecessor did well?

Molly Mueller, the current student body treasurer, originally came in during a spe-

cial election. I think she came into the processes of the student body treasurer really well. This is a very large role, and she did a great job. I feel like I can model my role after her and expand on what she did.

What is one thing you want to change or implement?

One thing I would like to change is the general ledger. I like spreadsheets a whole lot. There can be equations that can be implemented to make it more automatic than it is, because right now, it is just inputting numbers.

Why should the student body vote for you?

I think people should vote for me because I am very dedicated to everything we do.

I have experience being a treasurer; I was treasurer for two years at my church, so I have been working with a general ledger. I am prepared for this job, very organized and very meticulous. I am ready for it.

CANDIDATE FOR STUDENT BODY CHIEF JUSTICE:

Kiera Jonson

a fourth-year studying microbiology What is your experience?

I joined the conduct board my freshman year. I heard about it through one of my orientation leaders the summer before I joined NC State, and it sounded like something I would be very interested in, so I went through the interview process and was accepted.

I have been on the Conduct Board since my second semester of my freshman year.

Throughout my time on the board, I have served as a hearing assistant and more recently, as a presiding officer. I am just looking to continue my service, because I feel like I’ve found a niche area of Student Government that I am very passionate about.

What is your platform?

Obviously, the conduct branch is very different than other areas of Student Government. We are not so much advocating

99th Student Government budget plans for campaign assistance funds Boz Kaloyanov

As the 98th Student Government session nears its end, a budget for the upcoming year has been developed, aiming to formally set up campaign assistance funds for candidates in next year’s election and adjust appropriations funding to be the same between fall and spring semesters.

Student Body Treasurer Molly Mueller, a fourth-year studying political science and international studies, and Chris Poteat, chair of the SG Finance Committee and a third-year graduate student in chemistry, hosted a town hall event on Tuesday, Feb. 26 to explain the changes and answer student questions.

Compared to the 2018-2019 budget, there are minimal changes, Mueller explained. The total budget remains at $442,800, and student fees will not increase from this current year.

Stipends for student body officer positions will remain at $4,500 for the president, $700 for board of elections chair and $4,200 for other roles. Branch operations funding will also remain the same, Mueller said.

“For the most part, things are staying the same,” Mueller said. “We’re working with the same total amount as we were last year, so there’s nothing too dramatic.”

One of the most significant alterations to the budget deals with the Office Administration category, which will see a $2,500 drop in spending for this upcoming year, according to Mueller.

Mueller said that $2,500 previously went toward Get Involved voting software, which will no longer be SG’s responsibility to purchase.

change; we are assuring that the student code of conduct is being fairly applied to all possible violations. Also, that students are aware of the code, and we are doing our best to uphold NC State’s expectations of all students and faculty.

Personally, I know for me, I want to focus on making sure that we are recruiting as wide an audience as possible. I want to make sure we are getting as much student representation as possible, especially from graduate students, since we lost one of the graduate students we had on the board; so, just looking to diversify and strengthen the

software with Get Involved, but we’re no longer going to do that anymore because we aren’t the only ones that use it,” Mueller said. “[Student Involvement] is fully covering that.”

Following a plan by Student Body President Jess Errico, a fifth-year studying mechanical and aerospace engineering, to partially subsidize SG elections, $3,000 has been allocated specifically in the budget as “Campaign Assistance Funds.”

For this current election cycle, Mueller said a trial run totaling $1,900 in available assistance funds is underway, funded through the Executive Branch Operations line.

Student Senate President Adam Schmidt, a

third-year studying civil engineering, inquired about changes to the SG Banquet category.

“I think in the past, we’ve seen banquet spending decrease significantly, and then we’ve seen it come back up in recent sessions,” Schmidt said. “I think it would be good for the committee to have a conversation on where we want to land.”

Mueller said that the reason for the increase was mainly due to funding issues encountered during the current session’s banquet.

The upcoming budget will also feature an even split between appropriations funding for the fall and spring semesters.

As this session draws to a close, several lines

have unspent money remaining. Poteat clarified where this money will go at the end of the session.

“Any unused funds would go into a surplus bill, which typically goes into the next session’s appropriations or finance lines,” Poteat said.

“This year, it is looking like that will go to what is called the general trust, which is basically our mandated reserves in case of an emergency.

This means we would no longer have access to that.”

The mandated reserves is a pool of money every organization at NC State must have, Poteat said. Mueller said this money acts as a failsafe in case something catastrophic occurs.

Jodi was wonderful at coordinating with Student Government. Also, within conduct itself, she created a lot of formal changes.

Within the Student Code of Conduct, we updated information about board hearing, so that it is more formalized. We also went through with our hearing assistants and created a handbook for them, so they have additional resources to refer to other than the advisors.

I really appreciate those efforts, and I want to continue on her train of continuing with education within the board and strengthening board membership.

ALEX OBIOL,

a fourth-year studying textile engineering, currently serves as the university affairs director for the executive cabinet in Student Government and is a candidate for student body president. Obiol started in Student Government as a first-year student.

Experience This past year serving as the university affairs director has really led me into feeling like I was very much qualified for the job. Not only am I qualified for it, but I think it’s what I’m really good at and what makes me feel very much that I’ve come to myself as a person and as a leader.

It’s helped me learn a lot about myself, being in this student university affairs role. It’s helped me see that my strength is in collaborating with administrators on campus and with other students in all different issues around campus and that I really am passionate about making other people’s issues part of mine, because NC State isn’t home for anybody if it’s not home for everybody. It’s really something that’s emotional for me in the sense that I feel it all the way down to my toes. I think it’s something that probably started as an insecurity, like wanting to be a part of Student Government and wanting to do a good job and now knowing that I’m ready to do that, be a part of Student Government and lead the rest of the student body.

Platform Accessibility and visibility — I could go on for a really long time about this, since they are really broad topics, and I think that’s something that we wanted to do when we created our platform. All of the different ideas that we had kind of funneled down into these two ideas

Accessibility, to us, means mobile accessibility on campus for students who may not be able-bodied and may not be able to get around. This also refers to financial accessibility: making sure students can not only pay for college but stay on top of it while having a good standard of living and being able to go out with their friends and that sort of thing — making sure that every student has the college experience that you dream of and making it just a little bit easier in all the different avenues that we can to make it easier to pay for college. Where visibility ties in is that we can’t make every part of campus accessible unless we have the voices of every student, because every student has different experiences, lives and needs. For visibility, we want our Student Government to be a place where all students on campus feel like they can come and use us as a sounding board to say, “This is my problem, this is what I’ve been facing, I don’t know where to go to get this addressed, I don’t know who to talk to,” and we want to be that connecting body closing the gap between the student body and administration.

Why should a student vote for you?

I think what really sets us apart is our experience … I’ve been put in a unique position the past three years, building relationships with the administration that fixes issues. I have a lot of experience not only solving these problems, but building relationships with the people that can help me solve them and can help students in general solve these problems. I think with our campaign and our platform, we’re promising a lot of broad ideas, but I think they’re things that we very broadly want to serve in all spots on campus. group of women to accomplish goals like menstrual product drives and create a depression and anxiety support network.

Later on in my Wesleyan career, I became very passionate about Title IX, so I joined the Title IX advisory committee.

It focused on inf luencing and reviewing Title IX policy and education, providing recommendations to the administration and working in collaboration with them.

I really loved being a student leader in undergrad, so in grad school, I decided to continue that as a member of the Chemis-

Experience Outside of Student Government, I’m involved in the Chancellor’s Aides program, I’m involved with Silver Wings, which is a service organization, and I’m a university ambassador.

Inside Student Government, I’ve had a little experience. My first year, I was the government relations committee. My second year, I was involved with the Association of Student Governments delegate on the executive cabinet, and this year, I am a College of Humanities and Social Sciences senator, and I am running to be the next student body president because I would like to connect Student Government back to the students and bring the students back in. This year is where I’ve gained the most experience and been able to dive in as well as last year. Starting with the Association of Student Governments, I really thought this was awesome because it brings all 17 UNC System schools into one room to talk about, “These are the issues that are consistent within or across campuses.” This is really awesome, because I got to see some that are similar and some that are different. I also got to meet a bunch of different people and they offered me perspective on, “this is what’s going on in our campus,” and then seeing what we as a UNC System can do for our students.

Platform Our platform is based under our slogan “This is about the Pack,” giving it back to the students and making sure that we’re actively engaging them and basically all of our points: accessibility and inclusion, making sure we’re giving try Graduate Student Association, where I worked basically as an administrative liaison. As part of a committee, I talked to the administration about issues facing the graduate students in our department and trying to work with them to create and implement solutions that worked for

students a welcoming voice at the table, as well as the resources they need to improve processes or increase accessibility on campus. With collaboration, connecting with student organizations outside of just giving them funds. So, making sure that we’re either going to these student organization meetings or inviting them to the [Student Organization Roundtable] to talk and giving them a voice where we can’t to advocate for themselves. Ally: so, standing with these students. Where we see that students can better advocate for themselves, then we want to give them the resources to do that and make sure they have the doorway to be able to walk through and talk to administration about that. Then sustainability: making sure that our processes on campus are sustainable as well as our processes instituted within Student Government is sustainable beyond our year.

Why should a student vote for you?

I think that students should vote for Nicole and I because we are relatable. We are the average student. Nicole is on the track and field team, and I am just a student who got involved.

I want people to know that this position is accessible and that people can do it, and they shouldn’t be scared to run for positions within their student organizations or within Student Government. They should vote for us because we’re passionate about the student body, and we’re passionate about making changes, and we actually have ideas to implement those through our points of accessibility, inclusion, collaboration, sustainability and ally. everyone. In the fall, I became a graduate student and lifelong student senator, where I’ve continued to work on Title IX as well as looking at addressing women’s health issues and supporting a number of

With the 2019 Spring General Election taking place on March 4, Technician spoke with all of the current student body officers and discussed in depth the different positions. The officers also explained what their positions entail and how they impact the NC State student body as a whole.

According to Meredith Spence-Beaulieu, student body vice president and a Ph.D. student in entomology, the student body president and student body vice president run together and work in tandem.

The president acts as the leader of the executive branch of Student Government, votes on the board of trustees and is a leading representative of the UNC Association of Student Governments, Spence-Beaulieu said.

She also explained some key differences between the student body president and vice president.

“The student body president role is traditionally more outward-facing, while the vice president does the day-to-day, internal things,” Spence-Beaulieu said. “These tasks include leading the executive cabinet meetings, helping to advise and work with the directors, and otherwise being responsible for the various operations of the executive branch.”

On the other hand, the Student Senate president is responsible for ensuring that the Student Senate operates smoothly. The Sen-

ate president affirms that all rules and processes are followed in the Senate, according to Adam Schmidt, Student Senate president and a third-year studying civil engineering.

“It is really critical that a person in this role is objective and impartial and unbiased,” Schmidt said. “They cannot put their own bias onto the student senators they’re supposed to serve.”

In addition, the Student Senate president is expected to take up resolutions passed by the Senate to university administration alongside the student body president and vice president, according to Schmidt.

According to Molly Mueller, student body treasurer and a fourth-year studying political science and international studies, the treasurer is considerably more administrative and behind-the-scenes, as they serve as chief financial officer to the student body.

Mueller said that the role of treasurer includes processing finance requests along with developing new budgets. This role constitutes a large amount of logistical processing.

“It’s really important to understand the logistical processes,” Mueller said. “One of my goals in transitioning with whoever the new person will be, is sitting down and going through a list of timelines, spreadsheets, and helping them understand exactly what needs to happen when it needs to happen.

That was one of the biggest challenges for me coming in.”

Lastly, the student body chief justice serves on the Conduct Board, primarily as the pre-

Jodi Svetaketu, the student body chief justice and a third-year studying English and Spanish, elaborated on some of her specific duties.

“We refer really heavily to the Code of Student Conduct and the policies within the Policies, Regulations, and Rules,” Svetaketu

said. “We have kind of a procedural structure that we really have to follow, [whereas] the other branches of Student Government have a little more autonomy… My job is really about facilitating discussions.”

We want our term in office to serve all students here on campus by including them, being accessible, giving the resources that student government has available and being transparent through the things that we do.

Platform Our platform is accessibility and visibility. We believe that an NC State education should be accessible to all students.

It doesn’t matter what your gender, race, socioeconomic status or ability is. There are so many different identities that people can have, and I don’t think any of them should inhibit you from getting an NC State education. So how do we make everything more accessible to students?

The other question becomes: we know that there are issues in accessibility, who are these issues affecting? They’re affecting students who are truly marginalized.

How do we give those students a voice to the administration? Our platform focuses on minimizing the gap between students, Student Government and administration.

Why should students vote for you?

I think both tickets are highly qualified.

I think that Alex and I bring together a bevy of experiences that are constructive in terms of making sure that we balance each other well. Alex has substantial experience in Student Government at NC State, and I have substantial experience being an advocate at the student level.

Building on these two things, I really think that we can get things done. We have the experience, we know the administration, and we have a real record of being advocates and allies for students no matter what. Prior to serving in the 98th session, I served in the 97th session as a member of the philanthropy and service department within the executive branch. By serving in the executive and legislative branch, I believe that I’ve been able to see both sides of Student Government and although I wasn’t heavily involved in the executive branch, I feel like I have made connections, learned and grown overall and learned how to lead and serve all students.

Why should students vote for you?

I’m running for student body vice president to serve for all students and to be a voice for the voiceless. Student Government is here for students and we feel that our platform incorporates the whole student. We care about all students on a student level of course but as people first.

We are all human beings and we feel like we can holistically take into account what students want and do everything that’s in our power.

The care and genuineness that we have within both of us is going to show. We know that we are going to work hard for students and we’re going to make sure that all students are cared for and know that they are cared for through Student Government.

Centennial Campus food options lack flavor { EDITORIAL } N

C State’s Centennial Campus is geared primarily toward its engineering students, of which there were over 6,000 undergraduates last year.

1,000 of these were full-time first-years, meaning they were required to live on campus. While there are a multitude of apartments on campus owned both privately and by the school, students can’t survive on a bed alone; they also need places to eat.

Main Campus students may get tired of the dining halls after a while, but it’s only a short walk to Hillsborough Street when the cravings kick in for Chipotle or Taco Bell. NC State is an engineering school, and the NC State Engineering Foundation raised over $39.2 million last year, $3.3 million of which directly benefited the college. Yet, our engineering students are starved for dining locations.

All of these restaurants close at 2 or 3 p.m. every single day and are closed all day on weekends, with the exception of Gravity Cafe, which has a separate seating area and is open until 10 p.m. On the Oval seats over 400 students when it’s open, but Gravity only seats up to 25.

Students’ other on-campus options are limited at best. Port City Java in Engineering Building II, Common Grounds at Hunt Library and Shuttle Inn Cafe, a convenience store, serve little more than coffee or snacks. Other locations, like the State Club Restaurant in the Park Alumni

Center and Terrace Dining Room on Lonnie Poole Golf Course, accept Dining Dollars but are too far to be considered within feasible walking distance.

NC State has resorted to outsourcing its dining options to privately owned food trucks in the Raleigh area, but even those don’t stay on campus past 1:30 p.m. They also do not accept Dining Dollars, aren’t particularly healthy and still require a considerable walk from Centennial housing.

Of the above locations, only On the Oval and the coffee shops accept meal credits, meaning students’ only options for dinner on a meal plan at Centennial

Campus are Gravity Cafe and Common Grounds. While students could theoretically sustain themselves by eating at these locations every single day, doing so would take a toll on both their physical and mental health, meaning Centennial Campus forces its prized engineering students, some of the brightest in the country, to choose: Spend out of pocket or starve.

While other parts of campus may have difficulty finding food options between classes or which fit into their dietary requirements and preferences, Centennial Campus students are forced to take what they can get. With a grand total of two locations and less than 50 seats that accept meal plans during dinner hours, engineering students, who already pay additional fees for “program enhancement,” shouldn’t have to pay extra to find decent food a reasonable distance from their homes away from home.

Burr should support resolution to end national emergency On Feb. 15, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency in response to what he has described as a “crisis” on the southern border. This emergency is dubious on its Noah face: Illegal immigration is Jabusch at its lowest levels since 2000; Opinion Editor many border crossings are by Central American refugees fleeing violence; and most illegal immigration actually results from overstaying visas, not border crossings.

However, the president is planning to use this emergency to take funds from military construction and counter-drug trafficking operations and use them for his border wall.

Fortunately, both Congress and the judicial branch have taken up measures to prevent this

emergency from going into effect. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a resolution which would end the emergency, and 16 states have filed a lawsuit to stop the declaration. The resolution is now being considered by the Senate, where it would need 51 votes to pass, including some from Republicans. To that end, Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina should vote in favor of the resolution, to assert control over this wild executive overreach.

Although the lawsuit seems more likely to succeed, since a number of the president’s executive orders have previously been successfully blocked in court, the House resolution would send a powerful message by potentially forcing the president to issue his first veto. This veto likely wouldn’t be overridden; however, to reach the president’s desk at all,

the resolution first needs to pass the Senate.

The bill currently has support from 50 senators: All 45 Democrats, two Independents and three Republicans have indicated support for the measure. Notably, one of the Republicans was Sen. Thom Tillis from North Carolina, who is up for reelection in 2020. However, Burr has not yet come out in favor of the legislation.

This position, although consistent with Burr’s past stances on immigration, should trouble North Carolinians and students at NC State. The president is aiming to draw funds from military construction and anti-drug trafficking operations in order to build the wall. North Carolina, in addition to hosting a number of prominent military bases, has an opioid death rate higher than the national average, so losing money which combats the

drug trade especially hurts our state.

The declaration, the wall and the counterfactual narrative underlying them all support the idea that immigrants are dangerous to America’s economy and society. These notions run contrary to NC State’s ideals of diversity and our status as home to thousands of international students and immigrants.

Our representatives and senators have a duty to represent our state’s interests, and this emergency declaration does not uphold our interests. Tillis should be recognized for standing up to his party and Trump for once, and Burr must follow suit by putting his state over partisan considerations. 2022 isn’t that far away, and Burr’s complacency today should worry him if he decides to seek reelection in the future. North Carolina and NC State deserve better.

Rescue team tackles turtle treatment VET STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH RESCUING INJURED TURTLES Derek Edgren Correspondent

The warm spell many in the Triangle recently enjoyed also had unfortunate consequences: Turtles came out of hibernation only to be hit by cars as they crossed the roads in their environments.

Three such turtles were brought to NC State’s Turtle Rescue Team, a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine that provides care for sick and injured reptiles and amphibians native to the area.

Dr. Greg Lewbart, a professor of aquatic animal medicine and faculty advisor for the Turtle Rescue Team, began working for the College of Veterinary Medicine in January 1993.

“In that first year, 1993, I estimate about ten turtles were just brought in,” Lewbart said.

more turtles each year and got others involved by founding the Turtle Rescue Team in 1996 with support from Linda Henis, a wildlife rehabilitator he had been working with. The organization now sees over 500 cases a year and has seen over 5,000 cases total in its history.

This surge in cases can be explained by the growth in land development over the

course of the organization’s existence, which has led to increased, often harmful contact between turtles and humans.

Impacts from automobiles are a leading cause of injury, among other things such as attacks by pet dogs. Those who bring the turtles often leave donations. Social media has also been another factor in the rise of cases, as more people have found

Additionally, the organization provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience for new vet students. Hannah Reynolds, co-president of the Turtle Rescue Team and a Ph.D. student in comparative biomedical sciences, talked about the need for the rescue team.

“These turtles have to move between bodies of water,” Reynolds said. “We’ve bisected and divided up their habitat with roads.”

Turtles are resilient, Lewbart said; if they do not quickly succumb to an injury, they can survive longer before being treated. They are also docile, making for a low-risk environment where students can learn how to manage cases firsthand.

The animals are wild, so there is no liability to an owner.

When a turtle is brought in, it receives a plan for treatment which might involve

CAT scans, X-rays, medication or surgery. After treatment is complete, the turtle will either enter rehabilitation or be released into the wild. The team has a large network of volunteers able to foster the turtles at their homes before release if necessary.

Around two-thirds of turtles that are admitted and last at least one day with the team make it back to the wild. The few turtles that cannot be released go to education centers or become pets. The team has also produced a large amount of data and many research papers, especially regarding what problems turtles face and how the animals can be treated.

“There’s always something new, different,” Lewbart said.

Speaking on a case where a man brought in a toad he had accidentally injured on a canoeing trip, Reynolds elaborated on the experience of

working at the rescue.

“It amazes me, the things people will bring to us,” Reynolds said.

2019 is an important year for the organization. Thanks to donations, they are now able to switch to a computerized medical records system. Also, a contractor has agreed to donate his work to renovate the unit the team operates out of in November 2019. Another generous donation has allowed the team to hire a veterinarian intern for a year starting in the summer, which will greatly help the team manage its growing caseload as well as grow itself into the future.

Wrestling roots run deep for NC State’s Justin Oliver Emma Sheppard Correspondent

For NC State graduate student Justin Oliver, wrestling has been a part of his life since the age of six.

His mother’s boss introduced him to wrestling, but little did Oliver know, “wrestling” was not what he expected.

“I was 6-years old, so wrestling to me was WWE,” Oliver said. “I got to the first practice and I literally cried the entire time because it was completely not what I thought it was going to be.”

In that moment, his dad asked him if he wanted to continue to wrestle, and he said yes, which led to him becoming the person he is today.

Oliver grew up in Davison, Michigan where he attended high school, where successful wrestlers such as Brent Metcalf, Jon Reader and Paul Donohoe were produced. Having these greats in his back-

yard gave him experience and prepared him for the next level.

Oliver had a stand-out high school career, going 172-5 and winning Division-I state championships in 2011 and 2012. He

After falling one win short of All-America honors both his junior and senior seasons at Central Michigan, Oliver said that improving his game at the NCAA Championships was at the top of his list of goals he wanted to accomplish this season.

Rebol central piece of Pack women’s tennis rebuild SENIOR FINISHING STRONG Covey Hough Correspondent

Senior Amanda Rebol looked at the scoreboard, awaiting the results of the ongoing matches. She had beaten her singles opponent and was cheering her teammates on from the sidelines. The match was deadlocked 3-3, with only one singles match remaining. Enduring a grueling, back-and-forth match, junior Anna Rogers finally broke through and won, clinching an upset over No. 11 Florida for the NC State women’s tennis team back on Jan. 28.

“When you’re ahead, you want to try to get the match off the court quickly,” Rebol said. “You want to get the match off quickly because you know how it can affect the rest of play in a positive way.”

Rebol had done just t hat aga inst t he Gators; she trounced her opponent in straight sets, including a 6-0 second set, and by doing so she helped a program that had endured serious struggles in the recent past knock off a top-25 team on the road. This win was a highlight in what has been a great year for both Rebol and the team as a whole.

Rebol ’s jou r ney to col leg iate tennis started around middle school. She had played soccer and tennis up to that point, but decided to commit fully to tennis around the time she was 12 years old.

“For a long time I played tennis and soccer,” Rebol said. “I guess when I was about 12 I missed a soccer game for a tennis match and my soccer coach told me I needed to pick one. I picked tennis, and not too long after that my mom was working at a tennis club, and I did a summer training session there and I fell in love with it.”

Rebol began homeschooling that year and began to travel around to play in various tennis events. She started taking the sport more seriously and focused on improving her game and began to envision a collegiate career.

When Rebol first came to NC State, the women’s tennis team was undergoing a major transition, and the program

was seriously struggling. The new head coach, Simon Earnshaw, had joined the previous year.

“She was one of my initial recruits,” Earnshaw said. “When she came here she obviously wanted to be a part of something that was going to change.”

Since then, Rebol has seen the team go from a Division I afterthought to a top-25 team. NC State is 10-3 with three wins against teams ranked in the top-25. The team is ranked No. 11 in the ITA Division I rankings, the highest ranking in program history.

“It’s crazy to see where we’ve come as a program altogether,” Rebol said. “When the freshmen came in it was Simon’s first real recruiting class, we were ranked like 140, so we’ve had a lot of success since then.”

Rebol ha s been a key par t of t he team’s success. She is 18-9 on the year and has improved stead i ly over t he course of her NC State ca reer. Her stel la r play as of late has been a key reason why the team has improved, both since her arrival and f rom last season. ”I feel li ke I understand my game more than I did in t he p a s t ,” Re b ol said. “My personal success recently is really nice, but at the same time it’s been more of a team thing. If I can get that point on the board and help the rest of my teammates, then that’s really achieving my biggest goal.”

Earnshaw has praised her team-first mentality and rock-solid work ethic. He describes her as a very resilient individual and someone who is always looking to improve.

“I don’t think there’s really been any time when you ask Amanda to do something and she won’t do it,” Earnshaw said.

“If we ever ask her to host a recruit, it’s yes. If we ask her to this or that, it’s yes.

It’s always yes. Those are the types of people you just can’t do without. As a coach, you want people you can trust and people who are responsible. I think [Amanda’s] been as good of a representative of our program as there could be.”

NC State looks to pick up major win at Florida State Tristan Tucker Staff Writer

The NC State men’s basketball team (208, 8-7 ACC) will travel to Florida to take on the Florida State Seminoles (22-6, 10-5 ACC) in a heated ACC matchup on Saturday. The Seminoles are currently No. 18 in the AP poll and are a major roadblock in the Pack getting a favorable seeding in the ACC Tournament. A win over the ‘Noles would be huge for the Pack as well as a major confidence booster nearing the end of the regular season.

The Pack is coming into the game having won four of its last five games after a brutal stretch through January and early February. The team was expected to go through growing pains as a predominantly new team with many transfers, but the roster has now bounced back in a strong way. “[It’s] very important,” redshirt sophomore guard Devon Daniels said. “You know, I think it’s really starting to show.

At the beginning of the season there were new pieces, and it was kind of hard to catch a rhythm, but now I think we’ve got it going. So, hopefully we can keep that going.”

Much like the Pack, the Seminoles are a team-oriented organization, meaning that they do not have a single go-to scorer but instead a committee of scorers. The team’s leading scorer is forward Mfiondu Kabengele, who is averaging 13.1 points, as well as 5.5 rebounds per game. Kabengele is also capable of hitting from deep, shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.

Joining Kabengele at the apex of Florida State scorers are starting guards Terance Mann and Trent Forrest. Mann is a solid wing that leads the team in rebounding at 6.4 rebounds per game and scores 11.5 points per game. Mann is also second on the team in assists at 2.4 and shoots an amazing 46 percent from deep. Mann leads the team in minutes at 31.1, so look for Mann to have an impact for the duration of the game.

Forrest on the other hand is a defensive machine, averaging two steals per game.

Ball security will be key for the Pack in order to maintain a fully controlled game.

Forrest also averages nine points and leads the team with 3.8 assists per game. Being able to impact all aspects of the floor, as Forrest is able to display, is an X-factor for teams that do not have a single established star.

In order to combat this, the Pack will need to limit the amount of turnovers it lets

up and allow junior guard Markell Johnson to get the team into a stable offensive rhythm. Johnson is coming off of an ACC career-high with 25 points against Wake Forest and will look to ride the hot hand into this game.

Johnson and Forrest will be the most interesting matchup as Johnson averages 2.3 turnovers, which Forrest can exploit rather easily if Johnson is not careful.

One option the Pack could resort to is fouling Koumadje after a rebound, as he shoots only 56.5 percent from the freethrow line, which ranks last for Florida State players receiving consistent minutes.

This was done successfully in the Wake Forest victory, and Keatts will look to repeat that success.

“We were able to get out in transition because we rebounded and shared the basketball,” Keatts said. “We made shots. We’ve played pretty well in the last three games where teams have zoned us, talking about Syracuse, Boston College and now Wake Forest. It is better to have a week off with a win opposed to a loss. We have got to take a couple of days off, and then try to stay sharp for our next opponent in Florida State.”

The Pack will need to make sure to score in bunches, particularly through redshirt senior guard Torin Dorn, redshirt junior guard C.J. Bryce and Daniels who have the capability to get hot in a short period of time.

The game is sure to be an intense defensive battle between the two teams and the Pack will need to show off its dominant offense once again to secure the conference win.

“Every win is important down the stretch,” Dorn said. “So winning as many games as possible is definitely at the utmost importance to us.”

The Wolfpack will take on Florida State in the Tucker Center in Florida on Saturday.

The Wolfpack won that match against Virginia Tech as a team, with the ACC dual title coming down to a criteria point to determine the match. While wrestling is a team sport, athletes compete in their own respective weight groups, and the points they earn as individuals compile into a team score.

“It can be hard to really differentiate the two sometimes,” Oliver said. “You just gotta go out there and do your job.”

Being a graduate student, Oliver is one of the older athletes on the team and tries to give some of his expertise to the younger wrestlers.

Being at NC State has given Oliver more opportunities and has shown him a more competitive atmosphere.

“There’s more of a fight from the guys,” Oliver said. “No matter what position you’re in or what you’re feeling, everybody gives 100 percent, and that’s definitely something that I needed.”

Since Oliver is now so far away from home, he looks to his teammates for a sense of family. They challenge him and give him something to work for. In addition to the give and take of advice from his teammates, he looks up to one of his first coaches as his inspiration to be a bet-

ter wrestler.

“It was actually Brent Metcalf ’s brother,” Oliver said. “He died in a car accident when I was in fourth grade. I actually have a tattoo that’s inspired by him. He helped me a lot with starting out wrestling so I’d have to say he is one of my biggest inspirations.”

“Everything,” Oliver said. “Obviously,

earning All-American Honors when I was 16 was definitely special, but just being able to go through the entire process of it, and build the relationships that I’ve built and train the way that I’ve trained kind of helps me know that I’m going to be able to do whatever I want to do outside of wrestling. It’s definitely an accumulation of everything, the people that I’ve met, the people that have supported me and helped me throughout the process, will definitely be something that I will forever cherish.”
